ಏಕೋನಚತ್ವಾರಿಂಶಸ್ಸರ್ಗಃ

ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರ ವಚಃ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಕಥಾಂತೇ ರಘುನಂದನಃ |
ಉವಾಚ ಪರಮಪ್ರೀತೋ ಮುನಿಂ ದೀಪ್ತಮಿವಾನಲಮ್ ||

ಸ|| ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರ ವಚಃ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಪರಮ ಪ್ರೀತೋ ರಘುನಂದನಃ ದೀಪ್ತಮಿವಾನಲಂ ಮುನಿಂ ಉವಾಚ ||

" Hearing those words of Visvamitra , Rama spoke to that venerable sage who has a glow equal to that of fire God"

ಶ್ರೋತುಮಿಚ್ಛಾಮಿ ಭದ್ರಂ ತೇ ವಿಸ್ತರೇಣ ಕಥಾಮಿಮಾಮ್ |
ಪೂರ್ವಕೋ ಮೇ ಕಥಂ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನ್ ಯಜ್ಞಂ ವೈ ಸಮುಪಾಹರತ್ ||

ಸ|| (ಹೇ) ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನ್ ! ಮೇ ಪೂರ್ವಕೋ ಕಥಂ ಯಜ್ಞಂ ವೈ ಸಮುಪಾಹರತ್ ? ಇಮಾಮ್ ಕಥಂ ವಿಸ್ತರೇಣ ಶ್ರೋತುಮಿಚ್ಛಾಮಿ | ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನ್ ತೇ ಭದ್ರಂ ( ಅಸ್ತು)|

' O Great Soul ! How did our ancient people perform the sacrifice? I am interested in hearing the same in detail'.

ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಸ್ತು ಕಾಕುತ್ ಸ್ಥಂ ಉವಾಚ ಪ್ರಹಸನ್ನಿವ |
ಶ್ರೂಯತಾಂ ವಿಸ್ತಾರೋ ರಾಮ ಸಗರಸ್ಯ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ ||

ಸ|| ವಿಶ್ವಾಮಿತ್ರಸ್ತು ಕಾಕುತ್ ಸ್ಥಂ ಪ್ರಹಸನ್ನಿವ ಉವಾಚ , '(ಹೇ) ರಾಮ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ ಸಗರಸ್ಯ (ಕಥಂ) ವಿಸ್ತಾರೋ ಶ್ರೂಯತಾ' ||

Then with a smile the venerable spoke to SriRama. ' O Rama ! Please hear the story of great Sagara in detail'.

ಶಂಕರ ಶ್ವಶುರೋ ನಾಮ ಹಿಮವಾನ್ ಅಚಲೋತ್ತಮಃ |
ವಿಂಧ್ಯಪರ್ವತ ಮಾಸಾಧ್ಯ ನಿರೀಕ್ಷೇತೇ ಪರಸ್ಪರಮ್ ||

ಸ|| ಶಂಕರಶ್ವಶುರೋ ಹಿಮವಾನ್ ನಾಮ ಅಚಲೋತ್ತಮಃ ವಿಂಧ್ಯಪರ್ವತ ಮಾಸಾಧ್ಯ ಪರಸ್ಪರಂ ನಿರೀಕ್ಷೇತೇ ||

' Sankara's faher-in-law Himavan, the best among non-moving things, and Vindhya mountain were looking across to each other'

ತಯೋರ್ಮಧ್ಯೇ ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತೋs ಭೂತ್ ಯಜ್ಞಸ್ಸ ಪುರುಷೋತ್ತಮೇ |
ಸ ಹಿ ದೇಶೋ ನರವ್ಯಾಘ್ರ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತೋ ಯಜ್ಞಕರ್ಮಣಿ ||

ಸ|| (ಹೇ) ಪುರುಷೋತ್ತಮೇ ! ಸ ಯಜ್ಞಃ ತಯೋರ್ಮಧ್ಯೇ ಅಭೂತ್ | (ಹೇ) ನರವ್ಯಾಘ್ರ ! ಸ ದೇಶೋ ಯಜ್ಞಕರ್ಮಣಿ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತೋ ಹಿ |

' O Rama ! The sacrifice took place in the land in between these two. That land is well known for the sacrificial activities'

ತಸ್ಯಾಶ್ವಚರ್ಯಾಂ ಕಾಕುತ್ ಸ್ಥ ದೃಢಧನ್ವಾ ಮಹಾರಥಃ |
ಅಂಶುಮಾನ್ ಅಕರೋತ್ ತಾತ ಸಗರಸ್ಯ ಮತೇ ಸ್ಥಿತಃ ||

ಸ|| (ಹೇ) ತಾತ ! ಕಾಕುತ್ ಸ್ಥ ! ಸಗರಸ್ಯ ಮತೇ ಸ್ಥಿತಃ ತಸ್ಯ ಅಶ್ವಚರ್ಯಾಂ ದೃಢಧನ್ವಾ ಮಹಾರಥಃ ಅಂಶುಮಾನ್ ಅಕರೋತ್ ||

' Dear son ! As per the strict orders of Sagara, the valiant Ansuman was in charge of the activities connected with the sacrificial horse'.

ತಸ್ಯ ಪರ್ವಣಿ ತಂ ಯಜ್ಞಂ ಯಜಮಾನಸ್ಯ ವಾಸವಃ |
ರಾಕ್ಷಸೀಂ ತನುಮಾಸ್ಥಾಯ ಯಜ್ಞೀಯಾಶ್ವಮಪಾಹರತ್ ||

ಸ || ತಸ್ಯ ಪರ್ವಣಿ ತಂ ಯಜ್ಞಂ ವಾಸವಃ ರಾಕ್ಷಸೀಂ ತನುಮಾಸ್ಥಾಯ ಯಜಮಾನಸ್ಯ ಯಜ್ಞೀಯ ಯಶ್ವಂ ಅಪಾಹರತ್ |

'On one of the auspicious days during the sacrifice, Indra in the garb of a Rakshasa stole the sacrificial horse.'

ಹ್ರಿಯಮಾಣೇ ತು ಕಾಕುತ್ ಸ್ಥ ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ನಶ್ವೇ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ |
ಉಪಾಧ್ಯಾಯ ಗಣಾಃ ಸರ್ವೇ ಯಜಮಾನಮಥಾಬ್ರುವಮ್ ||

ಸ|| (ಹೇ) ಕಾಕುತ್ ಸ್ಥ ! ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ನಶ್ವೇ ಹ್ರಿಯಮಾಣೇ ತು , ಸರ್ವೇ ಉಪಾಧ್ಯಾಯ ಗಣಾಃ ಯಜಮಾನಂ ಅಥಾಬ್ರುವಮ್ ||

' Oh Rama ! since the sacrificial horse was stolen, all the Rishis attending on the sacrifices spoke to Sagara who is performing the sacrifice.'

ಅಯಂ ಪರ್ವಣಿ ವೇಗೇನ ಯಜ್ಞೀಯಾಶ್ವೋs ಪನೀಯತೇ |
ಹರ್ತಾರಂ ಜಹಿ ಕಾಕುತ್ ಸ್ಥ ಹಯಶ್ಚೈವೋಪನೀಯತಾಮ್ ||

(ಸ) ಹೇ ಕಾಕುತ್ ಸ್ಥ ! ಅಯಂ ಪರ್ವಣಿ ಯಜ್ಞೀಯಾಶ್ವಃ ಉಪನೀಯತೇ , ಜಹಿ ಹರ್ತಾರಂ ವೇಗೇನ ಹಯಶ್ಚೈವ ಉಪನೀಯತಾಂ ||

" O Sagara! on this auspicious day the sacrificial horse was stolen. The one who stole the sacrificial horse should be killed and the sacrificial horse should be brought back. "

ಯಜ್ಞಚ್ಛಿದ್ರಂ ಭವತ್ಯೇತತ್ ಸರ್ವೇಷಾಮಶಿವಾಯ ನಃ |
ತತ್ತಥಾ ಕ್ರಿಯತಾಂ ರಾಜನ್ ಯಥಾsಚ್ಛಿದ್ರಃ ಕ್ರತುರ್ಭವೇತ್ ||

ಸ|| (ಯದಿ) ಏತತ್ ಯಜ್ಞಃ ಚ್ಛಿದ್ರಂ ಭವೇತ್ ಸರ್ವೇಷಾಂ ಅಶಿವಾಯ ನಃ , ತಥಾ ತತ್ ಕ್ರಿಯತಾಂ ಯಥಾ ಕ್ರತುಃ ಭವೇತ್ ಅಚ್ಛಿದ್ರಃ ||

" If there is an obstruction for the sacrifice it is inauspicious to all. Hence do all actions to ensure that such obstruction is removed."

ಉಪಾಧ್ಯಾಯವಚಃ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ ಸದಸಿ ಪಾರ್ಥಿವಃ |
ಷಷ್ಟಿಂ ಪುತ್ತ್ರಸಹಸ್ರಾಣಿ ವಾಕ್ಯಮೇತದುವಾಚ ಹ ||

ಸ|| ತಸ್ಮಿನ್ ಸದಸಿ ಉಪಾಧ್ಯಾಯ ವಚನಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ (ಸಃ) ಪಾರ್ಥಿವಃ ಷಷ್ಠಿಂ ಸಹಸ್ರ ಪುತ್ರಾಣಿ ಏತದ್ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಉವಾಚ |

'Heaing those words of Rishis , the king spoke to his sixty thousand sons.'
ಗತಿಂ ಪುತ್ತ್ರಾ ನಪಸ್ಯಾಮಿ ರಕ್ಷಸಾಂ ಪುರುಷರ್ಷಭಾಃ |
ಮಂತ್ರಪೂತೈ ರ್ಮಹಾಭಾಗೈ ರಾಸ್ಥಿತೋ ಮಹಾಕ್ರತುಃ ||

ಸ|| (ಹೇ) ಪುರುಷರ್ಷಭಾಃ ! ರಕ್ಷಸಾಂ ಗತಿಂ ನಪಸ್ಯಾಮಿ ! ಮಹಾಕ್ರತುಃ ಮಹಾಭಾಗೈಃ ಮಂತ್ರಪೂತೈಃ ಆಸ್ಥಿತಃ |

" Dear Sons ! I have not seen the movements of the Rakshasas. This sacrifice is being performed by great ones knowing all rituals".

ತದ್ಗಚ್ಛತ ವಿಚಿನ್ವಧ್ವಂ ಪುತ್ತ್ರಕಾ ಭದ್ರಮಸ್ತು ವಃ |
ಸಮುದ್ರಮಾಲಿನೀಂ ಸರ್ವಾಂ ಪೃಥಿವೀಂ ಅನುಗಚ್ಛತ ||

ಸ|| ಪುತ್ರಕಾ ತತ್ ಗಚ್ಛತ , ವಿಚಿನಧ್ವಂ ಪೃಥಿವೀಂ , ಸರ್ವಾಂ ಸಮುದ್ರಮಾಲಿನೀಂ ಅನುಗಚ್ಛತ | ವಃ ಭದ್ರಂ ಅಸ್ತು |

" Dear sons ! You proceed and search the whole earth garlanded by high seas".

ಏಕೈಕಯೋಜನಂ ಪುತ್ತ್ರಾ ವಿಸ್ತಾರಮಧಿಗಚ್ಛತಿ |
ಯಾವತ್ತುರಗ ಸಂದರ್ಶಃ ತಾವತ್ ಖನತಮೇದಿನೀಮ್ ||

ಸ|| ಯಾವತ್ ತುರಗ ಸಂದರ್ಶಃ ಅಧಿಗಚ್ಛತಿ ತಾವತ್ ಏಕೈಕ ಯೋಜನಂ ವಿಸ್ತಾರಂ ಮೇದಿನೀಂ ಖನತ |

" Till you find the sacrificial horse you dig every yojana of the earth to search".

ತಂ ಚೈವ ಹಯಹರ್ತಾರಂ ಮಾರ್ಗಮಾಣಾ ಮಮಾಜ್ಞಯಾ |
ದೀಕ್ಷಿತಃ ಪೌತ್ತ್ರಸಹಿತಃ ಸೋಪಾಧ್ಯಾಯಗಣೋ ಹ್ಯಹಮ್ |
ಇಹಸ್ಥಾಸ್ಯಾಮಿ ಭದ್ರಂ ವೋ ಯಾವತ್ತುರಗದರ್ಶನಮ್ ||

ಸ|| ಹಯಹರ್ತಾರಂ ತಂ ಚೈವ ಮಾರ್ಗಮಾಣಾ ಮಮಾಜ್ಞಯಾ | ಅಹಂ ಪೌತ್ರ ಉಪಾಧ್ಯಾಯ ಗಣೋ ಸಹಿತಃ ದೀಕ್ಷಿತಃ | ಇಹಸ್ಥಾಸ್ಯಾಮಿ | ಯಾವತ್ತುರಗ ದರ್ಶನಂ ಭದ್ರಂ ವಃ |

" As per my orders catch the one who stole the sacrificial horse. Myself along with Rishis and your sons will be continuing the sacrifice. I will be here. May you be safe in your search ".

ಇತ್ಯುಕ್ತಾ ಹೃಷ್ಟಮನಸೋ ರಾಜಪುತ್ತ್ರಾ ಮಹಾಬಲಾಃ |
ಜಗ್ಮುರ್ಮಹೀತಲಂ ರಾಮ ಪಿತುರ್ವಚನ ಯಂತ್ರಿತಾಃ ||

ಸ|| ಇತ್ಯುಕ್ತಾ ರಾಜಪುತ್ತ್ರಾಃ ಮಹಾಬಲಾಃ ಪಿತುರ್ವಚನ ಯಂತ್ರಿತಾಃ ಹೃಷ್ಠಮನಸೋ ಮಹೀತಲಂ ಜಗ್ಮುಃ |

Having been ordered thus the king's sons were delighted and following the orders of their father went in search of the sacrificial horse.

ಯೋಜನಾಯಾಮವಿಸ್ತಾರಂ ಏಕೈಕೋ ಧರಣೀ ತಲಮ್|
ಭಿಭಿದುಃ ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರ ವಜ್ರಸ್ಪರ್ಶಸಮೈರ್ನಖೈಃ ||

ಸ|| (ಹೇ) ಪುರುಷವ್ಯಾಘ್ರ ! ಏಕೈಕೋ ವಜ್ರಸ್ಪರ್ಶಸಮೈಃ ನಖೈಃ ಯೋಜನಾಯಾಮವಿಸ್ತಾರಮ್ ಧರಣೀತಲಂ ಭಿಭಿದುಃ

'O Rama ! each and every one of them started digging the earth with their nails sharp as the daimond edges'.

ಶೂಲೈರಶನಿಕಲ್ಪೈಶ್ಚ ಹಲೈಶ್ಚಾಪಿ ಸುದಾರುಣೈಃ |
ಭಿದ್ಯಮಾನಾ ವಸುಮತೀ ನನಾದ ರಘುನಂದನ ||

ಸ|| (ಹೇ) ರಘುನಂದನಾ ! ಸುದಾರುಣೈಃ ಅಶನಿಕಲ್ಪೈಶ್ಚ ಶೂಲೈಃ ಹಲೈಶ್ಚ ಅಪಿ ಭಿದ್ಯಮಾನಾ ವಸುಮತೀ ನನಾದ |

' Oh Raghunandana ! As the earth is being dug with spears sharp as thunderbolt, and ploughs a fearful sound emnated'. ,

ನಾಗಾನಾಂ ವಧ್ಯಮಾನಾನಾಂ ಅಸುರಾಣಾಂ ಚ ರಾಘವ |
ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾನಾಂ ಚ ದುರ್ದರ್ಷಃ ಸತ್ತ್ವಾನಾಂ ನಿನದೋsಭವತ್ ||

ಸ|| ರಾಘವ ! ವಧ್ಯಮಾನಾನಾಂ ಸತ್ವಾನಾಂ ನಾಗನಾಂ ಅಸುರಾಣಾಂ ಚ ದುರ್ಧರ್ಷಃ ರಾಕ್ಷಸಾನಾಂ ಚ ನಿನದೋ ಅಭವತ್ ||

'O Raghava ! while the digging was going on Nagas , Asuras , even the undefeatable Rakshasas and other beings started making sounds out of fear'.

ಯೋಜನಾನಾಂ ಸಹಸ್ರಾಣಿ ಷಷ್ಟಿಂ ತು ರಘುನಂದನ |
ಭಿಭಿದುರ್ಧರಣೀಂ ವೀರಾ ರಸಾತಲಮನುತ್ತಮಮ್ ||

ಸ|| (ಹೇ) ರಘುನಂದನ ! ಷಷ್ಠಿಂ ಸಹಸ್ರಾಣಿ ವೀರಾಃ ಧರಣೀಂ ಯೋಜನಾನಾಂ ಉತ್ತಮಂ ರಸಾತಲಂ ಭಿಭಿದುಃ|

'O Raghunandana ! the sixty thousand bravehearts dug the earth deep into the nether world'.

ಏವಂ ಪರ್ವತ ಸಂಭಾಧಂ ಜಂಬೂದ್ವೀಪಂ ನೃಪಾತ್ಮಜಾಃ |
ಖನಂತೋ ನರಶಾರ್ದೂಲ ಪರ್ವತಃ ಪರಿಚಕ್ರಮುಃ ||

ಸ|| '(ಹೇ) ನರಶಾರ್ದೂಲ ! ಏವಂ ಪರ್ವತ ಸಂಭಾಧಂ ಜಂಬೂದ್ವೀಪಂ ನೃಪಾತ್ಮಜಾಃ ಖನಂತೋ ಪರ್ವತಃ ಪರಿಚಕ್ರಮುಃ |

' Oh Best of men ! the princes who were digging up the earth, which is full of mountains , were moving freely all over those mountains'.

ತತೋ ದೇವಾಸ್ಸಗಂಧರ್ವಾಃ ಸಾಸುರಾಸಹಪನ್ನಗಾಃ |
ಸಂಭ್ರಾಂತ ಮನಸಃ ಸರ್ವೇ ಪಿತಾಮಹಮುಪಾಗಮನ್ ||

ಸ|| ತತಃ ದೇವಾಃ ಗಂಧರ್ವಾ ಸಹ ಅಸುರಾಸಹ ಪನ್ನಗಾಸಹ ಮನಸಃ ಸಂಭ್ರಾಂತಃ ಪಿತಾಮಹಾನ್ ಉಪಾಗಮನ್ ||

'Then the Devas along with Gandharvas , Asuras and Nagas worried approched Brahma , the father of all.'

ತೇ ಪ್ರಸಾದ್ಯ ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾನಂ ವಿಷಣ್ಣವದನಸ್ತದಾ |
ಊಚುಃ ಪರಮ ಸಂತ್ರಸ್ತಾಃ ಪಿತಾಮಹಮುಪಾಗಮನ್ ||

ಸ|| ತೇ ವಿಷಣ್ಣ ವದನಾಃ ಪರಮ ಸಂತ್ರಸ್ತಾಃ ತದಾ ಉಪಾಗಮನ್ ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾನಂ ಪ್ರಸಾದ್ಯ ಪಿತಾಮಹಾಂ ಊಚುಃ |

'With deep sorrow and fear they first pleased the father and then addressed him in the following manner'.

ಭಗವನ್ ಪೃಥಿವೀಸರ್ವಾ ಖನ್ಯತೇ ಸಗರಾತ್ಮಜೈಃ |
ಬಹವಶ್ಚ ಮಹಾತ್ಮಾನೋ ಹನ್ಯಂತೇ ತಲವಾಸಿನಃ ||

ಸ|| ಭಗವನ್ ! ಸಗರಾತ್ಮಜೈಃ ಪೃಥಿವೀಂ ಸರ್ವಾಂ ಖನ್ಯತೇ . ಬಹವಶ್ಚ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಃ ತಲವಾಶಿನಃ ಹನ್ಯಂತೇ ||

" Bhagavan ! The children of Sagara are digging up everything. Many great people living there are being killed".

ಅಯಂ ಯಜ್ಞಹರೋsಸ್ಮಾಕಂ ಅನೇನಾಶ್ವೋs ಪನೀಯತೇ |
ಇತಿತೇ ಸರ್ವಭೂತಾನಿ ನಿಘ್ನಂತಿ ಸಗರಾತ್ಮಜಾಃ ||

ಸ|| " ಅಯಂ ಅಸ್ಮಾಕಂ ಯಜ್ಞಹರಃ , ಅನೇನ ಅಶ್ವಂ ಉಪನೀಯತೇ " ಇತಿ ಸಗರಾತ್ಮಜಾಃ ಸರ್ವಭೂತಾನಿ ನಿಘ್ನಂತಿ ||

" Saying ' This one obstructed the sacrifice" or 'This is the one who stole the sacrificial horse', they are killing all living beings."

ಇತ್ಯಾರ್ಷೇ ಶ್ರೀಮದ್ರಾಮಾಯಣೇ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕೀಯೇ ಆದಿಕಾವ್ಯೇg
