sundarakāṁḍa.
atha trayastriṁśassargaḥ

sō:'vatīrya drumā ttasmā dvidrumapratimānanaḥ|
vinītavēṣaḥ kr̥paṇaḥ praṇipa tyōpasr̥tya ca||1||
tā mabravīnmahātējā hanumān mārutātmajaḥ|
śira syaṁjalimādhāya sītāṁ madhurayā girā||2||

sa||saḥ vinīta vēṣaḥ vidrumapratimānanaḥ tasmāt drumāt avatīrya kr̥paṇaḥ praṇipatya upasr̥tya ca|| mahātējā mārutātmajaḥ hanumān śirasyaṁjalimādhāya madhurayā girā tāṁ sītāṁ abravīt||

Dressed in a somber manner, and shining he whose face was of the color of corals, having offered salutations approached the pitiable one. The son of wind god, Hanuman with great luster, bowing his head as mark of respect, spoke to Sita in sweet words.

kānu padma palāśākṣi kliṣṭakauśēyavāsini|
drumasya śākhāmālaṁbya tiṣṭhasi tvamaniṁditē||3||
kimarthaṁ tava nētrābhyāṁ vārisravati śōkajaṁ|
puṁḍarīkapalāśābhyāṁ viprakīrṇa mivōdakam||4||

sa|| padmapalāśākṣi kliṣṭakauśēyavāsini aniṁditē drumasya śākhāṁ ālaṁbya tiṣṭasi | kā nu?||tava nētrābhyāṁ kimarthaṁ vāriḥ puṁḍarīkapalāśābhyāṁ viprakīrṇa udakaṁ iva sravati ||

Oh Lady with eyes like lotus petals, blemish less one, wearing crumpled silk garments and holding a branch and standing , who are you? Tears are flowing from your eyes like the water trickling down a pair of lotus petals.

surāṇāṁ asurāṇāṁ vā nāgagaṁdharva rakṣasām|
yakṣāṇāṁ kinnarāṇāṁ vā kā tvaṁ bhavasi śōbhanē||5||
kā tvaṁ bhavasi rudrāṇāṁ marutāṁ vā varānanē|
vasūnāṁ vā varārōhē dēvatā pratibhāsimē||6||

sa|| śōbhanē surāṇāṁ vā asurāṇāṁ vā nāga gaṁdharva rakṣasām yakṣāṇāṁ vā kinnarāṇāṁ va kā tvaṁ|| rudrāṇāṁ vā marutānāṁvasūnāṁ vā kā tvaṁ| mē varānanē varārōhē (tvaṁ) dēvatā pratibhāsi |

Oh Auspicious looking lady ! Are you a goddess or a demon, or Gandharva, or Nagas, or Rakshasa or Yakshas ? O Beautiful lady ! Are you one of Rudras or Maruts ? Oh best among women you appear to be a goddess to me.

kinnu caṁdramasā hīnā patitā vibudhālayāt|
rōhiṇī jyōtiṣāṁ śrēṣṭhā śrēṣṭhasarvaguṇānvitā||7||
kā tvaṁ bhavasi kalyāṇī tva maniṁditalōcanē|
kōpādvā yadi mōhāt bhartāramasitēkṣaṇā||8||
vasiṣṭaṁ kōpayitvā tvaṁ nāsi kalyāṇyaruṁdhatī|

sa|| caṁdramasā hīnā vibudhālayāt patitā jyōtiṣāṁ śrēṣṭhā śrēṣṭhasarvaguṇānvitā rōhiṇī kiṁ nu?|| kalyāṇī aniṁditalōcanē kā tvaṁ bhavasi | kōpāt vā mōhāt vā bhartāraṁ vaśiṣṭhaṁ kōpayitvā kalyāṇī aruṁdhatī na asi |

Are you one of the luminaries that fell down separated from the moon? Are you Rohini, embellished with the best of virtues among all the constellations? Oh Lady with blemish less eyes! Who are you ? Are you Arundhati who out of anger or out of love, made Vasistha angry?

kōnuputraḥ pitā bhrātā bhartā vā tē sumadhyamā||9||
asmāllōkādamuṁ lōkaṁ gataṁ tvaṁ anuśōcasi|
rōdanā datiniśśvāsāt bhūmisaṁsparśanā dapi||10||
na tvāṁ dēvī mahaṁ manyē rājña ssaṁjñāvadhāraṇāt|
vyaṁjanāni ca tē yāni lakṣaṇāni ca lakṣayē||11||
mahiṣī bhūmipālasya rājakanyā:'si mē matā|

sa|| sumadhyamē tē putraḥ pitā bhrātā bhartā vā kō nu| asmāt lōkāt amuṁ lōkaṁ gatā anuśōcasi ||sa|| rōdanāt atiniḥśvāsāt bhūmi saṁsparśanāt api rājñaḥ saṁjñāvadhāraṇāt tvāṁ dēvīṁ saṁjñē|| tē yāni vyaṁjanāni lakṣaṇāni ca lakṣayē bhūmipālasya mahiṣī rājakanyāsi ca mē matā||

Who is the son or father of brother or husband , who departed from this world making you sorrowful. From your crying and the deep breaths and the touching of the ground, you bear the signs of a royal queen. On the basis of your signs and other qualities I think that you are the queen of a king or a princess.

rāvaṇēna janasthānāt balādapahr̥tā yadi||12||
sītā tvamasi bhadraṁ tē tanmamācakṣya pr̥cchataḥ|
yathā hi tava vai dainyaṁ rūpaṁ cāpyatimānuṣam||13||
tapasā cānvitō vēṣaḥ tvaṁ rāmamahiṣī dhruvam|

sa|| tvaṁ janasthānāt rāvaṇēna balāt apahr̥tā sītā asi yadi tat pr̥cchataḥ mama ācakṣva | tē bhadraṁ astu||tava dainyaṁ atimānuṣaṁ rūpaṁ va tapasā anvitaḥ vēṣaḥ yathā tvaṁ dhruvaṁ rāma mahiṣī||

Are you Sita that was brought by force from Janasthana by Ravana , if you are that please tell me. May god bless you. Your plight, superior human form, your robes marked with asceticism , as such you certainly look like Rama's queen.

sā tasya vacanaṁ śrutvā rāmakīrtana harṣitā||14||
uvāca vākyaṁ vaidēhī hanumaṁtaṁ drumāśritam|
pr̥thivyāṁ rājasiṁhānāṁ mukhyasya viditātmanaḥ||15||
snuṣā daśarathasyāhaṁ śatrusainyapratāpinaḥ|
duhitā janakasyāhaṁ vaidēhasya mahātmanaḥ||16||
sītēti nāma nāmnāshaṁ bhāryā rāmasya dhīmataḥ|

sa|| sā vaidēhī tasya vacanaṁ śrutvā rāmakīrtana harṣitā drumāśritaṁ hanumaṁtaṁ vākyaṁ uvāca||ahaṁ pr̥thivyāṁ rājasiṁhānāṁ mukhyasya viditātmanaḥ śatrusainya pratāpinaḥ daśarathasya snuṣā || ahaṁ mahātmanaḥ vaidēhasya janakasya duhitā | dhīmataḥ rāmasya bhāryā sīta iti nāma nāmnā||

That Vaidehi hearing his words , delighted by the words of praise about Rama, addressed Hanuman who was seated on the tree. I am the daughter in law of Dasaratha, who is the foremost among the great kings on this earth, who knows self, who is a slayer of enemy armies. I am the daughter of the great soul Janaka , the king of Videha. I am the wife of sagacious Rama.

samā dvādaśa tatrāhaṁ rāghavasya nivēśanē||17||
bhuṁjānā mānuṣān bhōgān sarvakāmasamr̥ddhinī|
tatra trayōdaśē varṣē rājyē nēkṣvākunaṁdanam||18||
abhiṣēcayituṁ rājā sōpādhyāyaḥ pracakramē|

sa|| ahaṁ tatra rāghavasya nivēsanē mānuṣān bhōgān bhuṁjānā sarvakāmasamr̥ddhinī dvādaśa samāḥ|| tatra trayōdasē varṣē sōpādhyāyaḥ rājā ikṣvākukulanaṁdanaṁ rājyēna abhiṣiktuṁ pracakramē||

I have lived in Rama's house for twelve years, enjoying the pleasures of a human being. Then in the thirteenth year, along with the Royal preceptor, the king decided to anoint Rama, the delight of Ikshwaku line, as the king.

tasmin saṁbhriyamāṇē tu rāghavasyābhiṣēcanē||19||
kaikēyī nāma bhartāraṁ dēvī vacanamabravīt|
na pibēyaṁ na khādēyaṁ pratyahaṁ mama bhōjanam||20||
ēṣa mē jīvitasyāṁtō rāmō yadyabhiṣicyatē|
yatta duktaṁ tvāyā vākyaṁ prītyā nr̥pati sattama||21||
tacchēnna vitathaṁ kāryaṁ vanaṁ gacchatu rāghavaḥ|

sa|| tasmin rāghavasya abhiṣēcanē saṁbhriyamāṇē kaikēyi nāma dēvī bhartāraṁ vacanaṁ abravīt|| na pibēyaṁ pratyahaṁ bhōjanaṁ na khādēyaṁ (yadi) rāmaḥ abhiṣicyatē | ēśaḥ mē jivitaṁ aṁtaḥ|| nr̥pasattama tvayā prītyā yat tat vākyaṁ uktām tat vitathaṁ na kāryaṁ yadi rāghavaḥ vanam gacchatu||

While the arrangements for anointing Rama are going on, queen by name Kaikeyi spoke to her husband. 'I will not drink or eat or eat food. if Rama is anointed. This is the end of my life. Oh Best of Kings those words of love you spoke to me, if they are not to be false then Rama goes to forest'.

sa rājā satyavāgdēvyā varadānamanusmaran||22||
mumōha vacanaṁ śrutvā kaikēyyāḥ krūramapriyam|
tatasthu sthavirō rājā satyē dharmē vyavasthitaḥ||23||
jyēṣṭhaṁ yaśasvinaṁ puttraṁ rudan rājya mayācata|
sa piturvacanaṁ śrīmān abhiṣēkātparaṁ priyam||24||
manasā pūrva māsādya vācā pratigr̥hītavān|

sa|| satyavāk sa rājā dēvyāḥ varadānaṁ anusmaran kaikēyyāḥ apriyaṁ vacanaṁ śrutvā mumōha|| tataḥ satyē dharmē vyavasthitaḥ sthavīraḥ rājā rudan jyēṣṭhaṁ putraṁ rājyaṁ ayācata| saḥ śrīmān pituḥ vacanaṁ abhiṣēkāt paraṁ priyaṁ manasā pūrvaṁ āsādya vācā pratigr̥hītavān ||

The king ever truthful, remembering the word given to Kaikeyi, hearing the unpleasant words of Kaikeyi fainted. Then the king who is aged , who is established in righteous conduct, while crying begged his famed eldest son to give back the kingdom. That illustrious one for whom father's word as more important than the kingdom , having accepted in his mind then accepted his words.

dadyānnapratigr̥hṇīyān nabrūyāt kiṁcidapriyam||25||
a pi jīvitahētōrvā rāmaḥ satyaparākramaḥ|
sa vihā yōttarīyāṇi mahārhāṇi mahāyaśāḥ||26||
visr̥jya manasā rājyaṁ jananyai māṁ samādiśat|
sāhaṁ tasyāgratastūrṇaṁ prasthitā vanacāriṇī||27||
na hi mē tēna hīnayā vāsaḥ svargē:'pi rōcatē|
prāgēna tu mahābhāgaḥ saumitriḥ mitranaṁdanaḥ||28||
pūrvaja syānuyātrārthē drumacīrai ralaṁkr̥taḥ|

sa||satyaparākramaḥ rāmaḥ dadyāt napratigr̥hṇiyān jīvitahētōrvā kiṁciy apriyam nabrūyāt ||mahāyaśāḥ saḥ mahārhāṇi uttarīyāṇi vihāya manasā rājyaṁ viśrujya mām jananyai samādiśat||ahaṁ tasya agrataḥ vanacārinī tūrṇaṁ prasthitā | tēna hīnāyāḥ mē svargōpi na rōcatē ||mahābhāgaḥ mitranaṁdanaṁ saumitri pūrvajasya anuyātrārthē drumacīrai ralaṁkr̥taḥ||

Rama whose strength is his truthfulness, gives but not take even for his life, nor will he speak harsh words. That great person, casting off the luxurious upper garments, giving up the kingdom wholeheartedly, entrusted me to his mother. I myself started before him to be a forest dweller. for without him even heaven is not preferable. Sumitra's son, a noble one, a delight to his friends, dressed himself in bark clothes to follow his brother to the forest.

tē vayaṁ bharturādēśaṁ bahumānya dr̥ḍhavratāḥ||29||
praviṣṭāḥ sma purā dr̥ṣṭaṁ vanaṁ gaṁbhīradarśanam|
vasatō daṁḍakāraṇyē tasyāha mamitaujasaḥ||30||
rakṣasā pahr̥tā bhāryā rāvaṇēna durātmanā|
dvaumāsau tēna mē kālō jīvitānugrahaḥ kr̥taḥ||31||
ūrdhvaṁ dvābhyāṁ tu māsābhyāṁ tatastakṣyāmi jīvitam||32||

sa|| tē vayaṁ bhartuḥ ādēśaṁ bahumānya dr̥ḍhavratāḥ purā adr̥ṣṭaṁ gaṁbhīradarśanaṁ vanaṁ praviṣṭāḥ sma||amitatējasaḥ tasyāṁ bhāryā ahaṁ daṁḍakāraṇyē vasataḥ | durātmanā rakṣasā rāvaṇēna apahr̥tā||tēna dvaumāsau kālō jīvitānugrahaḥ kr̥taḥ| tataḥ dvābhyāṁ māsābhyāṁ ūrdhvaṁ jivitaṁ takṣyāmi||

Then we following the kings orders fully determined entered the impenetrable forest. While the most valiant Rama was living in Dandaka forest , I his wife was carried away by the evil minded Ravana. He has given me a two months to live. After those two months I will be giving up my life.

ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē vālmīkīyē
caturviṁśat sahasrikāyāṁ saṁhitāyām
śrīmatsundarakāṁḍē trayastriṁśassargaḥ||

Thus ends the Sarga thirty three of Sundarakanda in Ramayana the first poem ever composed in Sanskrit by the first poet sage Valmiki.
