Sarga 57

"સર્વથા કૃતકાર્યઃ" Means one who has successfully completed all tasks. Who is that? "અસૌ હનુમન્"; 'It is Hanuma'. Jambavan, on hearing the roar of Hanuma from the skies immediately says that.

When the Vanaras in search of Sita were facing a daunting task, the daunting task of crossing an ocean hundred Yojanas long, it is Jambavan who encourages Hanuma. And that was the beginning of Sundarakanda.

Hearing the roar of Hanuma in the return journey, Jambavan knew that success was achieved. Jambavan's faith in Hanuma is immense. This can be seen in another instance. That was during the war between the armies of Rama and Ravana.

During the war, Indrajit deploys the Brahmastra. All except Vibhishana and Hanuma are struck down unconscious. The whole army is knocked off. In that darkness of the battle, Vibhishana and Hanuma set about looking for survivors. They see the injured Jambavan in the battlefield.

Jambavan too recognizes Vibhishana by his voice and asks him. 'How is Hanuma?' Vibhishana was surprised by the question.

The hierarchy of people in the battle are Rama and Lakshmana. After them it is Sugriva, the Vanara King. So Jambavan's question was surprising. Surprised, Vibhishana asks the same from Jambavan.

Jambavan's reply is illuminating. Jambavan says, 'If Hanuma is alive, we will live even if we are half dead. If Hanuma is no more, we are as good as dead even if we are alive.' Such is the confidence in Hanuma. So as soon as he heard Hanuma's roar, he was sure Hanuma succeeded in his mission.

There are some more events in the return journey. The poet says "પર્વતેન્દ્રં સુનાભં ચ સમુસ્પૃશ્ય વીર્યવાન્" That means he touched the king of mountains by way of paying respects.

Hanuma was matter of fact about his achievement. After landing on the Mahendra mountain, Hanuman tells the assembled Vanaras simply "દૃષ્ટા સીતેતિ" That he has seen Sita.

That was enough for the other Vanaras to rejoice. There was no boasting of his conquests.

Now we go through Slokas of Sarga 57 with meanings and commentary and see how it happened in Valmiki's words.

The first line of the Sarga is as follows. 'સ ચન્દ્ર કુમુદં રમ્યં..' (57.1) ; 'the moon was like a beautiful lotus'

With all anxieties set aside, the poet too was in exuberant mood. He starts the Sarga with a flowing description of the sky through which Hanuma was flying.

The first six Slokas describe the Sky through which Hanuma is flying using the sea which he flying over.

These lines echo the famous Jaya mantra, saying, 'જયત્યતિ બલોરામો'; There announcing the names of Rama, Lakshmana, and Sugriva and adding his own capability to destroy Ravana, Hanuma adds that after paying obeisance to Maithili, he shall go away.

In the first Sarga, Hanuma saying "પ્રતિજ્ઞા ચ મયા દત્તા "- meaning that he has taken a vow not to stop, Hanuma does not stop for resting on Mainaka, and proceeds like the arrow of Rama.

Remembering that encounter while going to Lanka, Hanuman flying north, touched the lord of mountains from skies fondly. He moved at great speed like an arrow released from a powerful bow string, just as he said he would, when he started the journey. "યથા રાઘવ નિર્મુક્તઃ શરઃ શ્વસનવિક્રમઃ" (1.39)

That is the way of Hanuma.

For the Vanaras waiting on the northern shores , there is constant fear of the fact that the time limit given by the king is nearing. Though confident of Hanuman's capability , there is nagging fear of not being able to find Sita. Govindaraja says, with these fears they are દીનમનસઃ; This is meant to imply that Vanaras were scared with the possibility of hearing the bad news that Sita was not found, says Govindaraja

Vanara's roar is like lion's roar says Tilaka Tika.

"This Hanuman is always successful. If he has not then his sound will not be like this." ||57.23||

In the roar of Hanuma, what we hear is the excitement of accomplishment , not of dejection due to inability to find Sita. That is why Jambavan says of Hanuma, if he has not then his sound will not be like this. We hear virtually same argument in Sarga 64 where Sugriva announces to Rama , when he hears the Angada and other arrive at Prasravana mountain.

Govindaraja says, that when somebody known is returning from a long journey, humans tend to wave as soon as they see them even at a distance. Similarly the Vanaras too waved a tree branch of flowers, showing their jubilation , seeing Hanuma.
