Viveka Chudamani Slokas
Master saying, - ‘विज्ञाय सम्यक् निजरूपमेतत् पुमान् विपाप्मा विरजो विमृत्युः’, that one knowing the true nature of Self, would be free of Sin, free from blemish and death, thus elaborates on the benefits of knowing Self.
Now again here Guru elaborates on the benefits.
Sloka 224
Sage who knows will be free of sorrows and attains the form of bliss.
That the one who knows the true nature of Self, will be free from Sin, blemishes of Gunas, and death, - is what we heard in the previous Sloka. If one is free from Sin and the blemishes etc, he will be free of sorrow. Being free from sorrow and free of bondages, one attains happiness (आनंद) not because of merits of the past, but because of being free from attachments etc. That happiness generated inside is the bliss.
will not be afraid of anyone.
In Gita we hear that one involved in Nishkama karma will be free of fear. Similar is the case here. Being free of attachments, the one who knows the true nature of Self is free from fear. So, he will not be afraid of anyone.
there is no other way to be free of ocean of Samsara.
Knowing the true nature of Self, one becomes free of attachments, free of blemishes of Gunas; Reverse the logic being free of attachments and blemishes of Gunas, one realizes the true nature of Self - that is being free of the ocean of Samsara. Indeed, that is the only way to be free of the ocean of Samsara.
without the seeker knowing his own true Self.
Summary of 224th Sloka
Sage who knows (the true form of Self) will be free of sorrows, attains the form of bliss, and will not be afraid of anyone. There is no other way to be free of ocean of Samsara, without the seeker knowing his own true Self.
Thus, gist of this Sloka, in line with the earlier Sloka, is that to be free of the cycle of Samsara, there is no other way than knowing the true from Self.
Sloka 225
that knowledge of being not different from Brahman
is the reason for being free from transmigratory life (Samsara)
How is that knowledge of being not different from Brahman.
by which bliss without a second
that knowledge of being not different from Brahman provides a bliss without a second.
What else one gets?
Supreme Brahman is attained by the wise
With that knowledge of being not different from Brahman, Supreme Brahman is attained by the wise.
Thus, the Summary of Sloka 225:
that knowledge of being not different from Brahman, is also the reason for being free from transmigratory life (Samsara).
That knowledge of being not different from Brahman provides a bliss without a second; With that knowledge of being not different from Brahman, Supreme Brahman is attained by the wise.
अहं ब्रह्मास्मि echoes the line that one is not different from Brahman. This is known to the one who realizes the true nature of Self.
So, to say firmly, अहं ब्रह्मास्मि, one must understand the true nature of Self.
