In the tradition of conveying a complex subject through the use of a subtle parable the Kathopanishad starts with the story of a Rishi Vajasravas and his son Nachiketa. The dialog of Nachiketa with Lord Yama carries the message of the Upanishad.

Rishi Vajasravas performs 'Viswajit' sacrifice which involves giving away "all" his wealth. His son Nachiketa notices that his father is giving away gifts( cows) which are of no use. Very much concerned and trying to grab the attention of his father he asks his father to whom will he give 'Nachiketa' as he is part of his fathers wealth. Father being busy with the rituals and with without realizing says "to death". There upon to keep his fathers word Nachiketa moves to Yama's world. Yama was away when Nachiketa reaches the place. He waits for three nights till Yama returns. Alerted that a Brahman was waiting for him for three days without partaking anything as a guest , Yama offers him three boons for the three nights he waited. For the first boon Nachiketa wants to understand the Fire sacrifice and for the Second boon he wants that his Father be free of anxiety and be happy . Both the boons being granted Nachiketa asks for the third boon the knowledge about "here after". Nachiketa says that some say there is life after death some say not and he wants to know what happens after death. Yama tries to dissuade him with all sorts of worldly boons. Nachiketa could not be deterred. Yama tells him even Devas do not know, it is too difficult to understand . Nachiketa still insists on the knowledge then Yama relents.

After testing Nachiketa's determination , Yama starts his teaching.

He starts by teaching importance of "Om" the two letter word . After extolling the efficacy of "om" , Yama teaches about Self .

Yama also answers the question what happens after death saying Jivas who understood the Atman get liberated others go to different lives based on their karma. . He says they go from death to death meaning that they continue in the cycle of birth and death !

Sundarakanda started in Ramayan page!

Welcome to Kasarabada.org !

This week formally starts with Sundarakanda chapter 1.Here we present all chapters of Sundarakanda while listing only a few slokas. So neither all the slokas nor their meanings are presented. But what si presented is a complete story of the Sarga along with a few slokas. WE start with Sarga 1. Sarga 1/ Chapter 1 of Sundarakanda is quite long with more than 200 slokas. The Ramayanam page has the following stories (i) Sundarakanda Chapter 1 (ii) Sagara Saagara and Mainaka , (iii) Battle of Surasa

Bhagavatam also started with Uddhava Gita . The Bhagavatam page has the following stories (i) Uddhava Gita chapter1 (ii) Curse of the Brahmanas .

One more thing continues with the story of Sundarakanda related beliefs !

The "Athato-Brhma-jignyasa", continues on the existing pattern. Under "Athato Brahma Jignyasaa"- we complete the sixth part of Katha upanishad with Yama answering Nachiketa's question on what happens after death ! .

One More Thing

Sundarakanda and the related Beliefs

Over the ages Sundarakanda acquired an importance of its own much like Bhagavad-Gita in Mahabharata. The two central images of Sundarakanda which created an aura which made it a entity in the daily parayana, the daily program of prayer in many families are the roles of Hanuman as a selfless devoted, courageous, intelligent, powerful yet simple Ram bhakta a devotee of Rama and the portrayal of Sita as the deeply afflicted sorrowing wife yet endowed with unflinching wifely devotion for Rama:

With such strong portrayals of unbounded loyalty and devotion a number of beliefs have sprung up in tradition bound families .It is said that when a person has a great issue at stake that mend or mar his life he reads Sundarakanda. There are more beliefs along those lines. This is only to illustrate the beliefs, which grew over ages about the power of Sundarakanda. But certainly there is more to it if one were to look at inner message of Sundarakanda than the beliefs built over ages.

The beliefs also meant there are also prescribed methods of parayana again borne out of beliefs and tradition only.

These are as follows:

The Sixteen-day Parayana: the 68 cantos of Sundarakanda are completed in 16 days with following program of reading a fixed no of cantos each day. The number of cantos and day are as follows; 2(1), 4(2), 4(3), 4(4), 8(5), 1(6), 8 (7), 1 (8), 5(9), 5(10), 7(11), 6(12), 1(13), 6(14), 2(15), 4(16).

The forty-day parayana

consists of doing seven cantos per day. This will amount to reading Sundarakanda four times. On the last day or day forty, one would have only six cantos to be done for completing the fourth time. To make up for the seven cantos for the day, one reads the Pattabhisheka Canto as befits the tradition and make up the seven also.

The 68-day parayana is seven cantos per day, at the end of 68 days one would have completed Sundarakanda seven times. This is supposedly the most difficult and most fruitful.

In any case personal beliefs play a strong role in what ever method one attempts.
