Mahavakyaas !!

Each Veda has many Mahavakyaas or great sayings or aphorisms with great meanings.

Four of them from the four Vedas are very thought provoking and made an imprint on the folklore of Vedas.

So much so that common people touching the periphery of the Vedantic philosophy also get to hear these lines . These Mahavakyas are in reality great sayings used for initiation of the learned into the final stages of realization.

These four great sayings are simple , thought provoking and powerful. It is said these Mahavakyas themselves are powerful enough if one continuously chants and meditates on them the non-duality of Jeevaatma and Paramaatma will be experienced.

These four Mahavakyas are from four Upanishads in the four Vedas.

The Aitareeya Upanishad in Rigveda contains the first one.

Prajnanam (hi) Brahma. -

Experience alone is Brahman.

The second Mahavakya is from Brihadarnyaka Upanishad of Shukla Yajurveda.It states:

Aham Brahmasmi - I am Brahman

The Third Mahavakya is from Chandogya Upanishad of Sama Veda. It goes as follows:

Tat tvam asi ( tatvamasi) - That thou art !

The fourth Mahavakya is from Mandukya Upanishad in Adharva Veda .The line from Mandukya Upanishad says:

Ayam atma Brahma – This Soul is Brahman !

Each of these statements is a powerful statement of experience, which emanated out of experience of seers.

A historically more recent realization comes through Buddha's sayings. Buddha did penance and after realizing the truth the ultimate statements made by him seems so simple and self evident yet staggering .

Thus some of the greatest statements have simplicity at the core making us wonder is that all ? .

The reality of the simple statements dawns only when one goes through the experience cycle.

Ultimately experience alone can convince one of Brahman . Thus the Statement Prajnanam (hi) Brahma is an unexceptional Statement.

Once one experiences Brahman the realization that Brahman is no other than the soul within you and that is Aham Brahmasmi ! That Brahman in me resides in you too and hence Tatvam asi – “you are that” follows .

The Brahman that is in me, that is in you and that is in every being is really the soul present in every being which is saying Ayam Atma Brahma !

Welcome to Kasarabada.org !

This week we have new stories in Bhagavatam and Ramayanam !!

Bhagavatam continues with Uddhava Gita . The Bhagavatam page has the following stories (i) Chapter 3, Uddhava Gita (ii) The story of Pingala, the courtesan . The Chapter 3, of The Uddhava Gita covers eight more Gurus bringing the total number of Gurus covered so far to sixteen out of twenty four Gurus mentioned earlier. The twenty four gurus get completed in the chapter Four that is due next week.!!!

One more thing continues about the Gurus and the lessons to be learnt !!

The story of Twenty four Gurus may throw up a question whether Twenty Four Gurus is not one too many ? One may also wonder if it is opposite of the Krishna's message ( such a simple message!) where Krishna suggests that one can uplift oneself on his own !! The " Gurus and the lessons" gives a perspective on the unity of thought !!

Ramayan page carries Sundarakanda Chapter 3. The Ramayanam page has two items (i) Sundarakanda Chapter 3 (ii) A Condensed form of the Chapter 3 in Telugu. The same will also come up in Sanskrit and English if the experiment succeeds!!.

What is on the kasarabada.org?

For the new visitors we thought of adding a few lines on navigation , so that they may know what is available on Kasarabada.org !

Along the same lines are the earlier articles in praise of Hunuman 1 , Hanuman 2 and Valmiki Sundarakanda . Added to this bouquet is the Sundarakanda as a Telugu poem by Pandit Vijayraghavrao. We have also added some downloads specifically for the Sankshipta Sundarakanda ( with Sanskrit slokas) reproduced in different language scripts namely Sanskrit , Telugu , Kannada and Malayalam . There is also a Telugu Sundarakanda Katha for those interested in reading the same as prose story !!,.

One More Thing

About Gurus and the lessons !

There could always be valid questions and doubts on the Avadhuta story of twenty four Gurus .

Is one Guru not enough ?

All the more so since Krishna Himself said that one can uplift himself and for a person his own self can be his guide !.

First is a clarification. When Avadhuta referred to twenty four Gurus, all the Gurus are allegorical. If you learnt any thing from any body that person is equivalent to a Guru whether declared or not !!

Avadhuta drew a lesson from each of the twenty four elements he observed . Hence the twenty four elements became twenty four Gurus.

In the Avadhuta story, Avadhuta is relating what he observed in nature and lessons he drew from the same. , So in a way it is continuation of Krishna's statement that one can lift himself up by his own efforts. Avadhuta's happiness came about by his own efforts in the form of lessons drawn by him from the nature.

So although twenty four Gurus are listed, the real Guru is Avadhuta himself who elaborated on the lessons he drew and one may draw !!

Also a word about the lessons.

There are two types of lessons .

One type is the good part which provides lessons that one needs to follow. This is easily understood with the examples of earth etc As an example the habit of Bee in extracting the essence is to be followed by an intelligent man in extracting the essence of scriptures or for that matter essence of anything else.

The other type is the bad part which also provides lessons about what one should not follow. The habit of the "bee" to store is one that is not to be followed. "Moth" is another where lesson drawn is not to jump into the fire like the 'moth' into the fire !!

A guru may give a lesson in one type or the other type and in a case like the "Bee" both types of lessons are there to be drawn !!

The twenty four gurus is an excellent story of how nature itself provides us examples that one may follow or learn from.
