One More Thing

Vakbhushanam Bhushanam

“Bracelets do not adorn a person, nor do the pearl necklaces which shine like the full moon, nor a cleansing bath, nor anointment of the body, nor flowers, nor the decoration of the hair. It is cultured speech alone that embellishes a man. All other ornaments lose their glitter. Only a jewel of a speech remains as the jewel of jewels” ( Vedanta vani July 2010, a Chinmaya publication)

That is an old saying!

But that has a value even today.

Lots of times cultured speech avoids the traps of ego. Cultured speech delivers what is to be said without traversing that domain of unsaid barbs, or hinted hurts or down right insults.

Some times when we are angry, we have that urge to go have that one defining argument with that boss or with that pesky little engineer working with us. A cultured speech alone is likely to get you over that moment moving the issue into the possibility of reasonable discussion.

It is not that the cultured speech solves the problems. A cultured speech is more likely to pave the way for the other one to hear your point. Ultimately winning the argument depends on the merit of the case. Cultured speech gives you only an opening.

In any case an uncultured slog at the boss is unlikely to get you anywhere. And bosses, who use one too many uncultured slogs, will certainly find themselves where they deserve to be, with no loyal following!!

This may sound like a soft speech philosophy that is not good for establishing authority and discipline at home or office.

There may be fear of ending up as a soft guy not capable of decisive actions! Ultimately it is the Knowledge that gives strength not the decibels or the power of position. There is nothing like cultured speech backed by deep knowledge.

Of course one breeds the other!

Welcome to Kasarabada.org !

This week we have 6th chapter of Sundarakanda in Ramayanam ; and 6th chapter of Uddhava gita in Bhagavatam.

As part of Uddhava Gita , Krishna explains the Bhakti Yoga. For lots of people Bhakti may mean continuous Japa. The elaboration of Krishna in his dialog with Uddhava is in a way illuminating. This is elaborated under "One more thing"

We are also reproducing "Vakbhushanam - Bhushanam" on the home page. The elaboration is also illuminating . A recent discussion reminded me of this , hence it came back on to our home page

Yes, one more thing. The Ramayana page has settled down into a format. It has a shortened version of the chapter in Sanskrit/Telugu slokas with English /Telugu translation under separate columns. Sundarakanda is about parayana. So adding the slokas that make up the story is part of our "Sankshipta Sundarakanda" parayana !!

What is on the kasarabada.org?

For the new visitors we thought of adding a few lines on navigation , so that they may know what is available on Kasarabada.org !

We now have 89 chapters of Dasama Skandha of Bhagavatam. All these chapters ( stories on krishna) are listed by name and are available on a link on the Bhagavatam page.

We have also added some downloads specifically for the Sankshipta Sundarakanda ( with Sanskrit slokas) reproduced in different language scripts namely Sanskrit , Telugu , Kannada and Malayalam . There is also a Telugu Sundarakanda Katha for those interested in reading the same as prose story !!,.

One More Thing

Notes on Bhakti !!!

and Self surrender

As part of Uddhava Gita , Krishna explains the Bhakti Yoga.

For lots of people Bhakti may mean continuous Japa/Puja or Bhajan.

The elaboration on Bhakti by Krishna in his dialog with Uddhava is in a way illuminating.

The forms of devotion detailed include "sweeping plastering watering .." , "construction of gardens orchards, playgrounds" for public use !!.

Specifically Krishna says :

" ... endeavor to construct gardens, orchards, play grounds, compound walls and temples dedicated to me single handedly or jointly;”

“Taking care of my temples without deceit, taking care of my temples through service like sweeping , plastering ,watering, and drawing sacred designs”

Virtually any form of service we may provide to community forms part of Bhakti tradition.

One form of Bhakti is "taking care of my temples without deceit" . Apparently such misuse has been foreseen many ages ago too!!!

Lord Krishna as part of the discourse has declared Bhakti as the best form of devotion to achieve the goals of life.

Among all these Krishna says "what is dear to oneself should be offered to Me . That offering produces infinite results"

Ages ago the discovery was made that the most difficult thing to part with is the "one dearest to oneself". Parting with that one thing is taken as the litmus test of surrender to God !!

No wonder offering hair at the feet of Lord of the Seven Hills is the token of surrender . Hair after all is the dearest to all and parting with that is the ultimate sacrifice !!
