Vedanta is an enquiry:

The main topics of Vedanta are

• Tatva ( Reality)

• Hita ( mean of realization)

• Purushartha ( ultimate Goal)

Reality or Tatva is divided into two

• Para ( the ultimate ) or Paramatman

• Apara that what is dependent on the ultimate reality ;

This Apara is divided into two

• Individual souls that have consciousness ( Jeevatman)

• Material entities which have no consciousness ( material universe – Jagat) )

Thus the three realities the Vedanta talks about are

- Paramatman

- Jeevatma

- Jagat

Now we come to the Vedantic Enquiry. The nature of the relation between the three namely Paramatma, Jeevatma and the universe is the Vedantic enquiry.

Specifically

• The first and foremost enquiry is to know the relationship between Paramatma ( ultimate Realty) and Jeevatma ( the individual soul)

• The next enquiry is about the relationship between Paramatma, the individual soul and the body embodying the individual

• The third enquiry is about the individual soul and the material world ( Jagat)

In this all the three Paramatman , Jeeva ( individual) and jagat ( universe) are considered real – with Vedas , Brahma sutras and Bhagavad-Gita considered as sources

Vedas have Bhedasruti bringing out the difference between Jeevatma and Paramatma, Abhedasruti bringing out the non-difference of Paramatma and Jeevatma and also the conciliatory statements which try to bridge the difference.

This three fold enquiry resulted in seemingly startling conclusions covering a range of views from the unequivocal Advaita which is Unitary and says there is only One Reality not three (Paramatman, you and Jagat all in one !), the Dvaita which recognizes two separate entities Paramatma and Jeevatma , and then there is Vishishtadvaita a qualified Unitary philosophy .

There is Saiva system recognizing all the three as inevitable three realities.

All of them base their arguments on the same Vedas.

The Sankara's defense of Advaita left even the western scholars staggered at the sweep of his arguments affirming a single reality that is the human being itself. Sankara has used the Vedas, Brahma Sutras and Bhagavad-Gita to fully establish the point of unitary soul (Advaita) in that sense the Vedas and philosophy affirmed by Sankara is secular.

The Purna prajna basing its philosophy on “Hari” alone (hari sharanam) as the center piece, Saivism basing its philosophy on Siva, Vishidtadvaita keeping the Paramatma and Jeevaatma virtually separate are probably easier to understand and assimilate.

The reference to the difficult river , in the story of Dasamanyaaya , is a very apt analogy and for that reason alone vedas and Vedantists talk hoarse about the step by step process for reaching the level of Sankara's Advaita.

So that is about the lines of … Vedantic Enquiry..

And this is not left as a metaphysical enquiry; the enquiry got embedded into the epics Ramayana and Mahabharata. The Upanishads talk about the same through sub stories like the dialog between Yama and Nachiketa in Kathopanishad etc

Vijayadasami greetings !!

Greetings for Vijaya Dasami !

Vijaya Dasami is on 14th October 2013 since we do not synch our dates with puja dates, our greetings are a couple of days ahead of the event !!

There are several stories on Vijayadasami ! The most famous being the story of Ramlila or killing of Ravana . The last act of Ramayana is the coronation of SriRama. In fact it is the last chapter of Yuddha kanda. We have added SriRama Pattabhisheka ghatta or SriRama's coronation for reading pleasure !! This extract follows the Gita Press edition of Ramayana. This is added as usual in Sanskrit and Telugu. We have also added this in Kannada keeping in mind that a good fifteen percent of the visitors are from Karnataka !

The large parts of India also celebrate Vijayadasami as the culmination of nine days of Duragapuja !. For them and many others reading Durga Saptasati is a form of celebration ! These nine days are also treated as prayer for Sakthi. For extolling Sakthi there is nothing more exhilarating than reading Sankaracharya's Saundaryalahari !!. Every sloka of Saundaryalahari is a mantra with its own Yantra ! Reading any sloka has its benefits. We provided a page for the first sloka in Saundaryalahari with its meaning !!

This week Sundarakanda moves to Chapter 66 . This chapter is virtually the first occasion we hear the voice of SriRama in a substantial way. In chapter 65 we barely hear a question from SriRama and Hanuman takes over with his reply. Even in Chapter 67 and Chapter 68 we will only get to hear the voice of Hanuman in his response to Rama's queries !! In Chapter 66 for the first time we hear Rama baring his heart about missing Sita on the Prasravana mountain !!. In this chapter we have reproduced almost all the slokas !

A recollection of the kinds of beginnings that happen during these ten days is the story of this week's one more thing !!

This week's Chapter 66 also means that in two more weeks we are completing our Sundarakanda Yagnya !!

What is on the kasarabada.org?

For the new visitors we thought of adding a few lines on navigation , so that they may know what is available on Kasarabada.org !

We have 89 chapters of Dasama Skandha of Bhagavatam. All these chapters (stories on Krishna) are listed by name and are available on a link on the Bhagavatam page.

We have 65 chapters of Sundarakanda and also complete bouquet of articles on Ramayana. These articles include "Role models from Ramayana" namely Srirama , Sita , Hanuman , Jataayu , Sabari , Bharata , Lakshmana. Apart from these there were some special articles namely The Message of Ramayana , Going to the Forests and about Hanuman in "In the thick of the Battle " . Along the same lines are the earlier articles in praise of Hunuman 1 , Hanuman 2 and Valmiki Sundarakanda . Added to this bouquet is the Sundarakanda as a Telugu poem by Pandit Vijayraghavrao. We have also added some downloads specifically for the Sankshipta Sundarakanda ( with Sanskrit slokas) reproduced in different language scripts namely Sanskrit , Telugu , Kannada and Malayalam . There is also a Telugu Sundarakanda Katha for those interested in reading the same as a prose story !!,.

One More Thing

The new beginnings on a festival day !!

Dussera or the Navarathri bring back lots of memories , many of which will bring a smile !!

The earliest remembrance sends you to those delightful innocent days of those elementary school days when we were all a "Rama" or "Hanuman" or what ever "God" you wanted to be and then going about with a bow and arrows squirting colorful powders ( gulal?) on friends or facing them in return ! In the very old days those were also the days on which the class teacher visited the homes of the children with groups of children and children make a show of their prowess in singing ! The teacher in turn getting rewarded by parents !

Every where it was time for new clothes and sweets. It did not matter if you are rich or poor . And our parents used to make it look so natural and it is always a happy occasion

For some these were the days on which you started for the preparation for the "final big exams" due in March . Unbelievable ?!.. but that was true in our case where we were made to believe that 'education and exams' are the only things that mattered !!.. From a safe distance now ,I can laugh at those thoughts !!

For some people these are the days on which one would start a new job ! If you were in a job you may also remember these days for the new projects started. If you are a Bangalorean a visit to Mysore is a must . And in any case Bangalore and "Ayudha puja" are inseparable ! It is also the period during which some body would have started the construction of a house !! For several people Vajaya dasami would be the day on which you did 'Grihapravesam' or entered a new house !! That was so true for us in any case !!

These were also the days on which many a big project was launched silently ! Even today the number of companies registered during these ten days will be far more than any other week in the whole year !

As we grew these are the days on which you pleased the loved ones !

These were also the days on which you made up with friends from you may have strayed !!

I can still remember the occasions when the wiser one among us initiated that small dialog that buried a hated heated argument and instantly forgotten are those fights we have had ! If you wonder who was wiser , I can assure you that neither had a lock on that !! .

The one who made that small beginning to make the other smile was the wiser one!
