The Katho Upanishad.

"He who gives away cows that have drunk water, eaten grass, whose milk has been milked and whose organs have lost the power , that one goes to the worlds that are known as joyless"

Kathopanishad is one which is more widely known in East and West.

Like all Upanishads it aims at inculcating the knowledge of Brahman which alone enables a man to attain Moksha or freedom from the cycle of birth and death. In the tradition of conveying a complex subject through use of a subtle parable the Kathopanishad starts with story of a Rishi Vajasravas and his son Nachiketa.The dialog of Nachiketa with Lord Yama carries the message of the Upanishad

So the Upanishad starts...

Once upon a time Vajasravasa desirous of fruit gave away all he had as part of a sacrifice. He had a son by name Nachketa. As the gifts were being given away to Brahmans ,faith took possession of Nachiketa who pondered over the events. 'He who gives away cows that have eaten grass and drunk water for good and cows that have been milked for good, will go those worlds that are known as joyless' . .He said to his father " Father to whom will you offer me" . He asked him a second time and third time . To him his father said ' To death I offer you'.

Thus having been spoken to , Nachiketa wondered. 'Among many I rank as belonging to highest. Among many I rank as belonging to miiddle. I am never the worst. What purpose can there be of death that my father will achieve by giving me away'. he tells his father ' Look back and see your forefathers and considers others who are there now. Man decays and dies like a corn and emerges again like a corn'. obeying his fathers edict Nachiketa proceeds to the abode of Yama.

When Nachiketa went to abode of Yama , Yama was not there. So nachiketa stayed put for three days without taking any food till Yama came back.

This week Ramayana Role models continues with the article on Sitayana or Sita as a role model. This is a fairly long article !! . And it appears under Ramayanam . A part of the story , to be precise the story of a Bear as recounted by Sita to Hanuman, is carried under the regular column of " one more thing " . The story of "Going to Forests" on how Sita insisted on joining Rama in going to the forests and succeeded also appears as a separate article on the Ramayanam page. Sita's logic is very much in line with her statement on Sri Rama as her husband and master ( guru)

There will be more in the coming weeks in Ramayana.

Athato Brahmajignyasaa this week continues with the elaboration of "Kathopanishad . Kathopansihad is one of the most widely read Upanishads in East and West. As usual the elaboration/ teaching on " Atman" and "Brahman" comes along as part of a story of Nachiketa's quest for knowledge. When Nachiketa was given boons by Yama, he chooses the knowledge of "Brahman" as his boon . Nachiketa tells Yama " Some say there is life after death and some say say not. I want to know the truth" . Yama was at first reluctant to tell . After testing Nachiketa by offering him several worldly temptations, Yama finally gives in and gives him the secret of "Brahman". When one reads a text of this nature one choice is to remove the complex language and paraphrase the same and give the gist of the Kathopanishad in a simple language. The other choice would be to stick to the rendering as is done in the original and present the same as is. A third choice is to stick to therendering as is and add he elaboration as given by the "Bhashyakars". The third would have been too complex and the first option too simple. So we are choosing the middle path. We will present the kathopanishad in its original form . This Upanishad is told in Two Adyaayaas ( Chapters) with Three Vallis (parts) each . The first part ( valli) of the first Adhyaya (Chapter) appears in this issue. The three parts of first Adhyaya will be brought on alternate week basis , alternating with "Ramayana Role models".

There are several slokas in Kathopanishad which are very beautiful and carry deep philosophical meanings. We will try to capture a few of such slokas and present them as part of the text.

Part of the effort in bringing the upanishads is to set at rest the common fear that Upanishads mean difficult text , difficult language and difficult thought processes. That simply is not true though to assimilate the thought processes does take an effort.

This week Bhagavatam continues with Chapter 81 of Dasama Skandha. Chapter 81 completes "The Story of Sudama" started in Chapter 80. The story of Kuchela brings out how the Supreme Being is satisfied with even a fistful flattenned rice when it is given with love and devotion. The Brahman's recation to the riches showered upon him also is note worthy. He resolves in contnuing to pray to the Supreme being instead of getting immersed in the riches at hand.

As stated the Ramayana Role models is appearing under Ramayanam.Shri Turaga has provided two links ( 1 , 2) for further readings.

As already stated the Ramayan and the role models are a perennial fascination for us and we had also published some books ( Raamudu- Sugunaabhiraamudu) and articles earlier !! This is available for download !!.

One More thing

The story of a Bear !!

( Referred in Ramayana)

Character is the ornament of Noble Persons (Santah Chaaritra Bhuushanaah)

Ravana was killed.

Hanuman went to Mother Sita and conveyed the news.

She was happy and thanked the Hanuman.

Hanuman asked Mother Sita's permission to beat to death the cruel Rakshasa women who had been torturing her.

The noble Mother Sita replied:

'No, nothing of that kind. They were helpless; they were only the tools of their wicked master".

"No blame attaches to them. No more will they do any harm to me". She adds, that she had to suffer all this because of her cruel fate, and nobody else is to be blamed for this.

She asks.

"Why should they be punished? Haven't you heard this story?'

That is the story of the Bear.

Once a man chased by a tiger got upon a tree. When he looked up, there was a bear sitting. Above is a bear with a tiger below on the ground, and the man is in the centre.

The tiger requested the bear to push the man down, their common foe. The bear refused to oblige him saying that the man was his guest. And the bear dozed off.

Then the tiger told his prey: "You are a fool. Who but a fool will put his faith in that furry fellow? He is not hungry now. He knows you cannot escape.

He has reserved you for his next meal. You push him down. I shall eat him up and go my way."

The man did as he was asked. The startled bear caught hold of another branch. Such treacheries he had seen before. Hence he was not surprised or enraged.

The tiger changed his tactics. He asked the bear to push down the traitor. The bear refused his request.

Quoting the Bear's reply, Mother Sita told Hanuman ( 6.113.45/46)
