1.3 The Katho Upanishad ( contd)

The Kathopanishad starts with the story of a Rishi Vajasravas and his son Nachiketa. The dialog of Nachiketa with Lord Yama carries the message of the Upanishad.

Rishi Vajasravas performs 'Viswajit' sacrifice which involves giving away all his wealth. His Nachiketa notices that his father is giving away gifts( cows) which are of no use. Very much concerned and trying to grab the attention of his father he asks his father to whom will he give 'Nachiketa'. Father being busy with the rituals and with without realizing says "to death". There upon to keep his fathers word Nachiketa moves to Yama's world. Yama was away when Nachiketa reaches the place. He waits for three nights till Yama returns. Alerted that a Brahman was waiting for him for three days without partaking anything as a guest , Yama offers him three boons for the three nights he waited. For the first boon Nachiketa wants to understand the Fire sacrifice and for the Second boon he wants that his Father be free of anxiety and be happy . Both the boons being granted Nachiketa asks for the third boon the knowledge about "hereafter". Nachiketa says that some say there is life after death some say not and he wants to know what happens after death. Yama tries to dissuade him with all sorts of worldly boons. Nachiketa could not be deterred. Yama tells him even Devas do not know, it is too difficult to understand . Nachiketa still insists on the knowledge then Yama relents.

Yama tells first about the word "om" as the vehicle for achieving his goal. Then he talks about self. This self cannot be known through study, nor through intellect, nor through hearing. It can be known through the self alone the aspirant prays to. The self of the seeker reveals its true nature to the seeker.

So the kathopanishad continues into valli three of First Adhyaya :

Yama continues talking about self:

There are two dwelling in the heart of hearts who enjoy the fruits of good deeds in this world. They are like light and shade , the Jeevaatma and paramaatma .. may we acquire the knowledge of Brahman in his manifested form as Lord of Sacrifice and for those who follow the path ofwisdom in his un manifested form asthe eternal Supreme being.

Know Body as the chariot and the Atman as the Lord of the Chariot.

Know the intellect as the driver and the mind as the reins.

The senses are called the horses and the sense objects as the Roads.

Yama continues the parable of the body as chariot and self as the Lord of the chariot.The intellect or the discriminating faculty as the driver who controls the wildhorses which are the senses by firmly holding the rein's ofmind . The roads on which these horses travel are full of objects which attract or repel the senses( horses).The sense of smelling follows the path of sweet odors, the sense of sight follows the path of beautiful objects.Thus each sense ( horse) unless controlled by a discriminating Mindseeks to towards its special objects.

When the self( Atman) is joined with the body mind and senses it is called intelligent enjoyer

For Lovers of Sanskrit we have another variation.

It is normal for the writers to go overboard in their descriptions. If one looks at ‘ Fortune” or the “Lakshmi” , in our folk lore all of us would have gone through Bhartruhari subhashitaalu/ Vemana Satakam /Kabirs Dohas giving four lines on one aspect indicating how fortunate one can be "Acquiring" fortune or by staying away from "Fortune".

But finding all 'the misfortunes of having fortune' in one go would be like a ready script written for an NTR or MGR to deliver in ringing theatrical tones . That is what we come across in " Kadambari", a legendary Sanskrit Classic of “Bhasa”. It come out as part of an advice to an young prince . As usual we were tempted. Yes we are pleased to reproduce the paragraph on "Lakshmi" under 'one more thing' !!

Lest we lose track, the advice of Sukanasa to Chandrapida ( Characters in "Kadambari") goes from how difficult is "Fortune" to how "Fortune" may affect the attitude of a person. And all this is said not to dissuade the young prince from acquiring"Fortune" but to alert him to possible diversions and ask him to guard against the same !

This issue also carries the 85th Chapter of Dasama Skandha of Bhagavatam. This chapter is about Krishna's Parents Devaki and Vasudeva. And Devaki displays the natural trait of a mother's anguish. Having known that Balarama and Krishna brought back to life the son of Guru Sandipani as a Gurudakshina , Devaki bares her feelings for the seven children killed by Kamsa. She Asks Krishna to bring them back. Krishna acting as a dutiful son would brings them back to life. The chapter 85 covers that story.

This is part of an advice to an young prince Chandrapida from Sukanasa ( let us say his guru) in the classical Kadambari of Bhasa:

It is as follows !

This lady ( Lakshmi) even if she is obtained by great effort she is to be protected with great difficulty !. She unties herself even when she is fastened with ropes in the form of merits ( even if you acquire merits Lakshmi may not stay with you) .

Even when she is guarded by thousands of brave soldiers equipped with Sharp and long swords she finds a way out.

She hardly

acknowledges familiarity, she

cares not for the illustrious birth , She cares not for the beauty , she does not respect Hereditary order, She gives no respect to character , or even to one's cleverness. She cares not for the scholarship of a person and is not mindful of righteousness. She does not entertain sacrifices. She does not show consideration for special abilities. She does not observe tradition She will never insist on Truthfulness. Auspicious marks are not an authority for her.

She disappears instantaneously as per her whims and fancies !!.
