1.3 The Katho Upanishad ( contd)

The Kathopanishad starts with the story of a Rishi Vajasravas and his son Nachiketa. The dialog of Nachiketa with Lord Yama carries the message of the Upanishad.

Rishi Vajasravas performs 'Viswajit' sacrifice which involves giving away all his wealth. His Nachiketa notices that his father is giving away gifts( cows) which are of no use. Very much concerned and trying to grab the attention of his father he asks his father to whom will he give 'Nachiketa'. Father being busy with the rituals and with without realizing says "to death". There upon to keep his fathers word Nachiketa moves to Yama's world. Yama was away when Nachiketa reaches the place. He waits for three nights till Yama returns. Alerted that a Brahman was waiting for him for three days without partaking anything as a guest , Yama offers him three boons for the three nights he waited. For the first boon Nachiketa wants to understand the Fire sacrifice and for the Second boon he wants that his Father be free of anxiety and be happy . Both the boons being granted Nachiketa asks for the third boon the knowledge about "hereafter". Nachiketa says that some say there is life after death some say not and he wants to know what happens after death. Yama tries to dissuade him with all sorts of worldly boons. Nachiketa could not be deterred. Yama tells him even Devas do not know, it is too difficult to understand . Nachiketa still insists on the knowledge then Yama relents.

Yama tells first about the word "om" as the vehicle for achieving his goal. Then he talks about self. This self cannot be known through study, nor through intellect, nor through hearing. It can be known through the self alone the aspirant prays to. The self of the seeker reveals its true nature to the seeker.

So the kathopanishad continues into valli three of First Adhyaya :

There are two dwelling in the heart of hearts who enjoy the fruits of good deeds in this world. They are like light and shade , the Jeevaatma and paramaatma .. may we acquire the knowledge of Brahman in his manifested form as Lord of Sacrifice and for those who follow the path of wisdomin his un manifested form as theeternal Supreme being.

Know Body as the chariot and the Atman as the Lord of the Chariot.

Know the intellect as the driver and the mind as the reins.

The senses are called the horses and the sense objects as the Roads.

Yama continues the parable of the body as chariot and self as the Lord of the chariot.The intellect or the discriminating faculty as the driver who controls the wild horseswhich are the senses by firmly holding the rein's of mind. The roads on which these horses travel are full of objects which attract or repel the senses( horses).The sense of smelling follows the path of sweet odors, the sense of sight follows the path of beautiful objects.Thus each sense ( horse) unless controlled by a discriminating Mind seeksto towards its special objects.

When the self( Atman) is joined with the body mind and senses it is called intelligent enjoyer

This issue carries a very nice story, "dasamanyaya", that rings a bell for most people familiar with the story of Paramanndayya sishyulu - the disciples of a Swami Paramanandayya !!

There are too many related humorous stories - apparently at least one these has a grounding in Vedantic stories !!. This is about "dasamaa nyaaya". No, this is not about the well known Dusnambri ( Hindustani) . Vedantic teachers explain the real nature of self through the method of tenth - "dasamanyaya". This is about explaining the philosophy underlying - "tatvam asi" - The story told in Vedantic books is elaborated under " one more thing" !! The story continues beyond Dasamaanyaaya to "tatvam asi".

This issue also carries the 85th Chapter of Dasama Skandha of Bhagavatam. This chapter is about Krishna's Parents Devaki and Vasudeva. And Devaki displays the natural trait of a mother's anguish. Having known that Balarama and Krishna brought back to life the son of Guru Sandipani as a Gurudakshina , Devaki bares her feelings for the seven children killed by Kamsa. She Asks Krishna to bring them back. Krishna acting as a dutiful son would brings them back to life. The chapter 85 covers that story.

One More thing

Once ten men waded into a tumultuous swift flowing swirling river . None of them could swim and neither did they know the direction in the darkness.

They did reach the other side.

They wanted to know if they all reached safely !

So one of them counted the number of men and found only nine - because he did not count himself. He was sure one has drowned.

Then others counted and came to the same conclusion because each of them counted all the other nine.

So they began to bewail of the loss of their comrade

Another man passing by and being solicitous enquired about the cause of their grief . He was told when they were crossing one of their comrades drowned. In no time the stranger found out their mistake.

The stranger asked one of them to count. He counted nine and he said "you see, we have lost the tenth!!".

The stranger then touched the man and said " Thou art that" , (the tenth)

In order to reassure all, he made them count and repeated the same thing with all of them. So their anguish disappeared and happiness returned.

Like wise the disciple searches every where and comes to the teacher and tells him that he has searched for the truth everywhere - in books , in temples , in images , in heaven - and he has not found it !!!.

Of course he has not sought the truth in the right place, that is to say in his own self .

So the teacher touches him emphatically and says :
