Chapter 4

Hanuman enters Ravana's Palace

Having successfully subdued Lankini, the presiding ogress of Lanka who is working for Ravana, Hanuman jumps over the protective walls without passing through the Main gate.

Entering the city by the night, he moves along the main highways adorned with banners and blossoms. The city shone brightly at that time with wonderful mansions belonging to a host of Rakshasas leaders .The houses are of various of designs, like Padma, Swastika, Vardhamana all of which were profusely decorated on all sides.

Roaming through the city on the mission for Rama, and following the orders of Vanara King Sugriva , Hanuman looked around and rejoiced

Going from house to house, he heard melodious songs, embellished with sounds produced by the three centers of articulation the throat . the heart and the mind .

He saw women who looked like the Apsaras from heaven itself.

Also he heard the tinkling of ornaments which ladies wear around their waist and jingling of their anklets. And he heard the sound of footsteps on the stairs coming from the houses of the great. Here and there he heard the sounds of clapping and murmur of pleasant conversation

He heard the Yatudhanas engaged in Vedic recitation and he saw Rakshasas singing praises of Ravana.

A large force of Rakshasas was stationed so as to guard the royal highway. And he saw many agents of Rakshasa secret police.

Some Rakshasas have been consecrated to perform sacrifices, some wore matted locks of ascetics, some had shaven heads, some were armed with handfuls of Kusa grass and others were equipped with vessels for sacrificial fire.

Some held mallets and war hammers in their hands. Others were armed with staves. Some had only one eye or one ear. Some had breasts swinging like pendulum.

Some had protruding fangs, distorted faces. Some were dwarfs. Some were armed with bows. And others with swords. Some had iron clubs, some were shining fully armed.

Then he saw the main protective force, which is hundred thousand strong stationed by the King in front of the Royal Palace!

Having seen on that occasion the building with large golden archways, Hanuman beheld the palace of the King of Rakshasas surrounded by moats adorned with white lotuses built on the summit. Hanuman approaches the well-protected palace of the King. The palace resembled the paradise and was resonating with marvelous sounds. It was further rendered noisy by the neighing of Horses and tinkling of ornaments. The portals of the palace looked charming with chariots and other conveyances, aerial cars and also with Elephants and horses.

The celebrated Hanuman then entered the palace of the King Ravana.
