Chapter 33

Coming down from the tree, Hanuman with a face resembling red coral , dressed appropriately and with a look of kindness, approached Sita. Bowing down with respect the son of Vayu spoke in gentle tones

" O Pious looking lady with eyes resembling lotus petals, wearing worn out silk garments and holding on to branch of the tree who are you ? From the looks of your limbs and from the marks on your person I believe you must be the consort of the ruler of the earth and the daughter of a king"

Hanuman continued.

" If you are Sita carried away by Ravana may prosperity be yours. Please tell me as I am anxious to know. Indeed the distressed looks, ethereal beauty and the dress of an ascetic makes me think that you are certainly the consort of SriRama."

Hearing his kind words and the praises of SriRama Vaidehi spoke to Hanuman. " I am the daughter-in-law of the King Dasaratha who is a lion among Kings , knower of the Atma and destroyer of hostile forces. I am the daughter of King Janaka the ruler of Videha . And I am the consort of wise SriRama known as Sita. Enjoying the human luxuries and endowed with an abundance of all that is desirable I lived in the abode of SriRama for twelve years. Then in the thirteenth year the king proceeded to install SriRama as the crown prince "

Sita continued the story of SriRama.

" While all arrangements were being made for his being crowned Kaikeyi spoke to her husband Dasaratha as follows.' I will not eat or drink till the end of my life if you anoint Rama. Oh Jewel among Kings if you do not want to break the promise lovingly given to me then let Rama proceed to the forests! ".

Then casting off his costly clothes and renouncing the kingdom willingly that illustrious man asked me to stay with his mother. Not wanting to stay apart for a second even if it heaven and having resolved to move to the forest with my husband, I marched ahead of him to the forest. Clad in the robes of an ascetic brother Lakshmana too resolved to join SriRama to the forests. Respecting the command of our Lord and steadfast in our vows, we penetrated deep in to the forest which is impervious to look at and which we had not seen before.

"While we were living in Dandakaaranya . I ,who was the wife of a most powerful man was carried away by the evil minded Ravana. Only two months are left in the time given by him. After that two months I will give up my life".

Thus ends Chapter 33 of Sundarakanda
