Sarga 28
"Sita in sorrow".

The Sarga begins with the sound of birds cooing, seemingly bringing good news to Sita. However, her mind remains haunted by the threats of Ravana and the Rakshasa women.. .

The following narration begins describing Sita's state of mind

||Sloka 28.01||

sā rākṣasēṁdrasya vacō niśamya
tadrāvaṇa syā priya mapriyārtā|
sītā vitatrāsa yathā vanāṁtē
siṁhābhipannā gajarājakanyā||28.01||

sa|| rākṣasēṁdrasya tat apriyaṁ vacaḥ niśamya apriyārtā sā sītā vanāṁtē siṁhābhipanna gajarājakanyā iva vitatrāsa||

Tilaka TiKa says- vacō niśamya saṁsmr̥tya, apriyārtā apriyēṇa priyasaṁyōga abhāvēna, ārtā duḥkhitā |

rākṣasēṁdrasya tat apriyaṁ vacaḥ niśamya -
having heard the unpleasant words of the king of Rakshasas
apriyārtā sā sītā vitatrāsa -
bereft of her husband, that Sita was terrified
gajarājakanyā iva -
like the young elephant princess
vanāṁtē siṁhābhipanna-
confronted by the lion in the deep forest

||Sloka summary||

"Remembering the unpleasant words spoken by the king of Rakshasas, Sita, who was anxious to be with her husband, felt terrified like a young elephant princess caught by a lion in the middle of the forest." ||28.01||

This Sarga takes place after Trijata's dream, which has good forebodings for Sita. In this context the appropriate meaning for niśamya is 'having remembered' the vile words of Ravana, Sita was again terrified .

||Sloka 28.02||

sā rākṣasī madhyagatāca bhīru
rvāgbhirbhr̥śaṁ rāvaṇa tarjitā ca|
kāṁtāramadhyē vijanē visr̥ṣṭā
bālēva kanyā vilalāpa sītā||28.02||

sa|| bhīruḥ bhr̥śaṁ vāgbhiḥ rāvaṇa tarjitā ca rākṣasīmadhyagatā ca sā sītā vijanē kāṁtāramadhyē viśr̥jya bālā kanyā iva vilalāpa||

timid lady, threatened by Ravana's terrible words
rākṣasīmadhyagatā ca sā sītā -
Sita, surrounded by Rakshasa women
vijanē kāṁtāramadhyē viśr̥jya bālā kanyā iva -
like a young girl left alone in a desolate forest

||Sloka summary||

"The timid lady surrounded by Rakshasa women, threatened by Ravana's terrible words wept like a young girl left alone in a desolate forest. ||28.02||

Previously, Sita had emphatically told Ravana that he could not escape from Dasarathi
- "asaṁśayaṁ dāśarathērnamōkṣyasē";

She had also proudly told the Rakshasa women that her husband was her master, even if he was poor or without a kingdom. However, after being threatened by the Rakshasas, Sita blames herself for her misfortunes, calling herself "alpapuṇyā" (lacking in merit) and "kr̥paṇā" (miserable). She goes as far as saying "na hi jīvitēḥ arthō" (there is no purpose to this life). All of this shows that Sita is unable to control her mind.

Despite being happy to hear Trijata's dream and the positive omens recalled by Trijata, Ravana's words still reverberate in her mind. Thus, Sita is still unable to find peace.

Poet says that with none of her people being near, she cries like a girl left in the middle of a forest.

||Sloka 28.03||

satyaṁ batēdaṁ pravadaṁti lōkē
nākālamr̥tyurbavatītisaṁtaḥ|
yatrāhamēvaṁ paribhartsya mānā
jīvāmi kiṁcit kṣaṇamapyapuṇyā|| 3||

sa|| lōkē akālamr̥tyuḥ na bhavati iti idaṁ satyaṁ santaḥ pravadaṁti| yatra ēvaṁ paribhartsyamānā apuṇyā ahaṁ dīnā kṣaṇaṁ api jīvati bata||

lōkē akālamr̥tyuḥ na bhavati iti -
that untimely death will not happen in this world
idaṁ satyaṁ santaḥ pravadaṁti -
this truth is stated by elders
yatra ēvaṁ paribhartsyamānā apuṇyā -
this way threatened and living without merits
ahaṁ dīnā kṣaṇaṁ api jīvati bata-
I am living pitiably even for a moment is surely because of that

||Sloka summary||

"The elders say that untimely death will not happen in this world. That seems to be true. Even though I am threatened like this, I am living pitifully even for a moment, surely due to a lack of merits." ||28.03|

In her sorrow, Sita blames herself for all her miseries

sukhādvihīnaṁ bahuduḥkhapūrṇaṁ
idaṁ tu nūnaṁ hr̥dayaṁsthiraṁ mē|
viśīryatē yanna sahasradhā'dya
vajrāhataṁ śr̥ṁga mivācalasya||28.04||

sa|| sukhāt vihīnaṁ bahuduḥkhapūrṇaṁ idaṁ mē hr̥dayaṁ nūnaṁ sthiraṁ yat vajrāhataṁ acalasya śr̥ṁgamiva sahasrathā adya naviśīryatē||28.04||

sukhāt vihīnaṁ bahuduḥkhapūrṇaṁ -
Although without happiness and filled with agony
idaṁ mē hr̥dayaṁ nūnaṁ sthiraṁ -
my heart is surely hard
yat vajrāhataṁ acalasya śr̥ṁgamiva -
like the summit of a mountain hit by Thunderbolt
sahasrathā adya na viśīryatē - does not break into a thousand pieces

||Sloka summary||

"Although I am without happiness and filled with agony , my heart is hard and does not break into thousand pieces like the mountain hit by Vajrayutha." ||28.04||

naivāsti dōṣaṁ mamanūna matra
vadhyāha masyā'priyadarśanasya|
bhāvaṁ na cāsyāha manu pradātu
malaṁ dvijō maṁtramivā'dvijāya||28.05||

sa|| ahaṁ apriyadarśanasya asya vadhyā atra mama dōṣaḥ na iva asti (yadi) | ahaṁ asya bhāvaṁ dvijaḥ advijāya maṁtramiva anupradātuṁ na alam ||28.05||

Tilaka Tika says- atra īdr̥śē viṣayē prāṇatyāgō'pi nadōṣaṁ asti| yataḥ aham asya vadhyā| ēvaṁ ca durmaraṇa dōṣasya durvāratvēna dōṣā abhāvōktiriti bhāvaḥ||28.05||

Set to be killed by the ugly one
atra mama dōṣaḥ na iva asti (yadi) -
(If I were to die) there is no fault.
ahaṁ asya bhāvaṁ anupradātuṁ na alam -
I cannot surrender to his wishes
advijāya maṁtramiva -
like (the Brahmin who would not part) his knowledge to a others

""Set to be killed by the ugly one, if I were to die, there is no fault. I cannot surrender myself to him like the Brahmin who would not share his knowledge with a non-Brahmin." ." ||28.05||

nūnaṁ mamāṁgā nyacirā danārya
śśastrai śśitai ścētsyati rākṣasēṁdraḥ|
tasminnāgacchati lōkanāthē
garbhasthajaṁtōriva śalya kr̥ntaḥ||28.06||

sa|| lōkanāthē tasmin ānāgacchati anāryaḥ rākṣasēṁdraḥ śalyakr̥ṁtaḥ garbhastha jaṁtōriva mama aṁgāni nūnaṁ śśitaiḥ śatraiḥ chētsyati||28.06||

Rama Tika says- lōkanāthē tasmin rāmē anāgacchati sati anāryaḥ kṣudrō rāvaṇaḥ mama aṅgāni garbastha jantōḥ ditirgarbhastha pavanasya aṅgāni śalyakr̥ntaḥ indraḥ iva chētsyati | gōvindarāja ṭīkālō śalyakr̥ntaḥ nāpitaḥ|

lōkanāthē tasmin ānāgacchati -
(if) the lord of the world does not come here
anāryaḥ rākṣasēṁdraḥ - vile king of Rakshasas
nūnaṁ śatraiḥ mama aṁgāni chētsyati -
will surely cut my limbs into pieces with sharp weapons
śalyakr̥ṁtaḥ garbhastha jaṁtōriva -
like a barber cutting the fetus in the womb

"If he, the lord of the world, does not come here, the vile king of Rakshasas will cut me to pieces like the barber who cuts the fetus with a sharp knife." ||28.06||

duḥkhaṁ batēdaṁ mamaduḥkhitāyā
māsau cirāyādhigamiṣyatau dvau|
baddasya vadhyasya tathā niśāṁtē
rājāparādhādiva taskarasya||28.07||

sa|| rājāparādhāt baddhasya niśāṁtē vadhyasya taskarasya iva duḥkhitāyāḥ mama dvau māsau cirāyādhigamiṣyataḥ idaṁ duḥkhaṁ bata ||

Tilaka Tika says- tvattō viyuktā ata ēva alpabhāgyā'ham|| vipadyāmi vinasyāmi|

Govindaraja Tika says- cirāyā duḥkhitāyāḥ mama dvau māsau vadhasya avadhibhūtau abhigamiṣyataḥ|idaṁ duḥkhaṁ bata| kasya duḥkham iva? rājāparādhāt baddhasya tathā niśāntē vadhyasya taskarasya iva duḥkham|

"For me sorrowing, this two months is a long time to wait. I am like the thief caught due to offending the king, and waiting overnight to be killed at the daybreak." ||28.07||

hā rāma hā lakṣmaṇa hā sumitrē
hā rāmamātāḥ saha mē jananyā|
ēṣā vipadyā myaha malpabhāgyā
mahārṇavē nauriva mūḍhavātā||28.08||

sa||hārāma hā lakṣmaṇa hā sumitrē hā rāmamātāḥ mē jananyā saha alpabhāgyā ēṣā ahaṁ mahāṇavē mūḍhavātā nauriva vipadyāmi||

hārāma hā lakṣmaṇa - O Rama, O Lakshmana
hā sumitrē hā rāmamātāḥ - O Sumitra ,O mother of Rama
mē jananyā saha - O mother ō jananī bhūmātā !
alpabhāgyā vipadyāmi- me with ill luck going to perish,
mūḍhavātā nauriva -like a ship caught in the whirlwind
ēṣā ahaṁ mahārṇavē- in the middle of the ocean

"Oh Rama, Oh Lakshmana, Oh Sumitra, Oh Rama's mother, Oh my own mother, I am an ill-starred woman going to perish, like the ship caught in a whirlwind in the midst of an ocean." ||28.08||

tarasvinau dhārayatā mr̥gasya
satvēna rūpaṁ manujēṁdra putrau|
nūnaṁ viśastau mama kāraṇāttau
siṁharṣabhau dvāviva vaidyutēna||9||

sa||mr̥gasya rūpaṁ dhārayatā satvēna tarasvinau tau manujēṁdraputrau vaidyutēna dvau siṁharṣabhau iva mama kāraṇāt nūnam viśastau||

Govindaraja Tika says- mr̥gasya rūpaṁ dhārayatā satvēna jantunā mama kāraṇāt mannimittam viśastau hiṁsitau| dvau siṁharṣabhāviva dvau siṁhāviva dvau vr̥ṣabhāviva ityarthaḥ | vaidyutēna aśaninā||

"The two powerful princes must have been killed by the creature in the guise of a deer on my account, like the two mighty lions are killed by the bolt of lightning." ||28.09||

nūnaṁ sa kālō mr̥garūpadhārī
mā malpabhāgyāṁ lulubhē tadānīm|
yatrāryaputraṁ visasarja mūḍhā
rāmānujaṁ lakṣmaṇapūrvajaṁ ca||28.10||

sa||nūnaṁ sa kālaḥ mr̥garūpadhārī tadānīṁ alpabhāgyāṁ mūḍhā māṁ lulubhē yatra rāmānujaṁ lakṣmaṇapūrvajam āryaputraṁ ca visasarja||

nūnaṁ sa kālaḥ mr̥garūpadhārī -
Surely that is the fate in the guise of a deer
tadānīṁ alpabhāgyāṁ mūḍhā māṁ lulubhē -
tempted this unfortunate and foolish soul
rāmānujaṁ lakṣmaṇapūrvajam āryaputraṁ ca visasarja -
drove away Rama's brother and Lakshmana's elder brother

"Surely that is the fate in the guise of a deer that tempted this unfortunate soul which sent away Rama's brother and Lakshmana's elder brother." ||28.10||

hārāma satyavrata dīrghabāhō
hā pūrṇa caṁdra pratimānavaktra|
hā jīvalōkaśca hitaḥ priyaśca
vadhyāṁ na māṁ vētsi hi rākṣasānām||28.11||

sa||satyavrata dīrghabāhō hā rāma hā pūrṇacaṁdra pratimāna vaktrahā jīvalōkasya hitaḥ priyaśca mām rakṣasānāṁ vadhyāṁ na vētsi||

"Oh the one committed to truth! Oh the long-armed one! Oh Rama whose face shines like a full moon! Oh beloved of the world, dear to everyone! You do not know that I am to be killed by the Rakshasas." ||28.11||

ananya daivatva miyaṁ kṣamā ca
bhūmau ca śayyā niyamaśca dharmē|
pativratā tvaṁ viphalaṁ mamēdaṁ
kr̥taṁ kr̥taghnēṣviva mānuṣāṇām||28.12||

sa||ananyadaivatvaṁ iyaṁ kṣamā ca bhūmau śayya dharmē niyamaśca pativratātvaṁ mama idaṁ kr̥taghnēṣu mānuṣāṇāṁ kr̥tamiva viphalam ||

Govindaraja Tika says- ananyadēvatvam āśrayaṇīyādēvatā na asti , sā rakṣiṣyati iti buddhi mē nāsti|.. iyaṁ kṣamāca| rāvaṇaparuṣākṣarāṇi rākṣasīnāṁ tarjanabhartsanādīni rāmamadhurālāpa śravaṇa kutūhalēna ahaṁ kṣāntavantī | bhūmau ca śayyā| tavāṅgkēsamupāviśaṁ ityēvaṁ vidhabhōgaḥ kadācidapi kilasēt iti atyāśayā hi mayā bhūmau śayanaṁ kriyatē||niyamaśca dharmē | viphalaṁ mamēdam amōghamapi mōghamāsīt| kasyaēvaṁ iti cēt atra āha - kr̥taṁ kr̥taghnēṣu mānuṣāṇāṁ| ātmānaṁ mānuṣaṁ manyē ityuktarītyā mānuṣatvaṁ rāmasyāpi asti|ataḥ taditaramānuṣāṇāṁ madhyē kr̥taghnēṣukr̥taṁ kāryamiva||asya kiṁ mūlaṁ iticēt mamēdaṁ tasminna kācinnūnatā mamaiva duṣkr̥taṁ atra hētuḥ||

Govindaraja, in his Tika, elaborates on Sita's words. He notes that she has no thought of any other god who may protect her. About her tolerance, he says that she is enduring the threats of Ravana and others in the hope of eventually hearing the sweet words of Rama. She sleeps on the ground, hoping that one day she can rest in his arms. She is following the righteous path, but all her efforts are failing, much like the actions done for an ungrateful

yā tvāṁ na paśyāmi kr̥śā vivarṇā
hīnā tvayā saṁgamanē nirāśā||13||

sa|| yā tvāṁ napaśyāmi tvayā hīnā saṁgamānē nirāśā kr̥śā vivarṇā mayā caritaḥ ayaṁ dharmaḥ mōghaḥ hi | tathā idaṁ ēkapatnītvāṁ nirartham||

likewise this devotion for one wife too is in vain for you

"Not seeing you, deprived of your company, with no hope in reuniting, following the righteous path is vain and likewise this devotion for one wife too is in vain for you." ||28.13||

piturnidēśam niyamēna kr̥tvā
vanān nivr̥ttaścaritavrataśca|
strībhistu manyē vipilēkṣaṇābhi
stvaṁ raṁsyasē vītabhayaḥ kr̥tārthaḥ||28.14||

sa|| tvaṁ pituḥ nirdēśaṁ niyamēna kr̥tvā caritavratasya vanāt nivr̥taḥ vīta bhayaḥ kr̥tārthaḥ vipulēkṣaṇābhiḥ strībhiḥ raṁsyasē manyē||

Having fulfilled the pledge to your father
caritavratasya vanāt nivr̥taḥ -
having returned from the forest

vipulēkṣaṇābhiḥ strībhiḥ raṁsyasē manyē -
revel in the company of large eyed damsels, I think

"Having fulfilled the pledge to your father, having returned from the forest, free of fear, being an accomplished one, you will surely revel in the company of large-eyed damsels." ||28.14||

ahaṁ tu rāmā tvayi jāta kāmā
ciraṁ vināśāya nibaddhabhāvā|
mōghaṁ caritvā'tha tapōvrataṁ ca
tyakṣyāmi dhik jīvita malpabhāgyā||28.15||

sa|| rāmā tvayi jātakāmā aham tu ciraṁ nibaddhabhāvā tapaḥ vrataṁ ca mōghaṁ vināśāya caritvātha jivitaṁ takṣyāmi | alpabhāgyāṁ dhik||

rāmā tvayi jātakāmā -
Oh Rama I loved you
aham tu ciraṁ nibaddhabhāvā -
for a long time kept my feelings of love fixed on you.
tapaḥ vrataṁ ca mōghaṁ vināśāya -
followed penance and all vows in vain
caritvātha jivitaṁ takṣyāmi -
having practiced giving up life
alpabhāgyāṁ dhik- fie on luck less me

""Oh Rama, I loved you. I have for a long time kept my feelings of love fixed on you. I have also followed penance and all vows in vain, only resulting in my doom. After practicing, I am giving up being luckless. Fie on me." ||28.15||

sā jīvitaṁ kṣipra mahaṁ tyajēyaṁ
viṣēṇa śastrēṇa śitēna vāpi|
viṣasya dātā na hi mē'sti kaścit
śastrasya vā vēśmani rākṣasasya||28.16||

sa|| ahaṁ sā jīvitaṁ viṣēṇa śitēna śastrēṇa vā api kṣipraṁ tyajēyaṁ | rākṣasasya vēśmani mē viṣasya śastrasya vā dātā kaścit nāsti||

ahaṁ sā jīvitaṁ kṣipraṁ tyajēyaṁ -
I shall end that life immediately
viṣēṇa śitēna śastrēṇa vā api - by taking poison or using sharp weapons.
rākṣasasya vēśmani -
in this palace of the king of Rakshasas
mē viṣasya śastrasya vā dātā kaścit nāsti - there is no one who can give me poison or the weapons.

"I will end my life at once by taking poison or using sharp weapons. But in this palace of the king of Rakshasas there is no one who can give me poison or the weapons." ||28.16||

itīva dēvī bahudhā vilapya
sarvātmanā rāma manusmaraṁtī|
pravēpamānā pariśuṣkavaktrā
nagōttamaṁ puṣpita māsa sāda||28.17||

sa|| dēvī itīva bahudhā vilapya sarvātmanā rāmaṁ anusmaraṁtī pravēpamānā pariṣuṣkavaktrā puṣpitaṁ nagōttamam asasāda ||

udbadhya vēṇyudgrathanēna śīghraṁ

sa||śōkābhitaptā sītā bahudhā vicintya atha vēṇyudgradhanaṁ gr̥hītvā ahaṁ vēṇyudgradhanēna udbudhya śīghraṁ yamasya mūlaṁ gamiṣyāmi||

upasthitā sā mr̥dusarvagātrī
śākhāṁ gr̥hītvā'tha nagasya tasya |
tasyāstu rāmaṁ praviciṁtayaṁtyā
rāmānujaṁ svaṁ ca kulaṁ śubhāṁgyāḥ||28.19||

Rama Tika says- rāmāgamanasaṁbhāvanā nimittaṁ yēṣu tāni dhairyārjitāni, dhairyasaṁpādakāni siddhāni praśiddhāni purā mithilāyāṁ rāmāgamana samayē upalakṣitāni dr̥ṣṭāni pravarāṇi śrēṣṭhāni nimittāni śakunāḥ tadākālē śākhāvalambēnōpasthitisamayē prādurbabhūvuḥ||

"Then auspicious omens, which are harbingers of courage, which dispel sorrow, which are well-known and proven in olden times, appeared on her auspicious body." ||28.20||

Rama Tika explains that as Sita stood holding the branches of the Simsupa tree, thinking of Rama, Lakshmana, and her family, auspicious omens which are harbingers of courage manifested, indicating the arrival of Rama. Those omens were seen before. "purāpi siddhāni" means that they appeared before. There were no such occasions after Sita's marriage. Rama Tika concludes that those were the omens referred to before the arrival of Rama in the Court of Janaka.

Thus ends Sarga 28 of Sundarakanda.
