Sundarakanda
Sarga 48

'tējōbalasamāyuktaṁ' means endowed with spirit and strength. 'tapaṁtamiva bhāskaram' means "shining like the Sun". Who is being described in such glowing terms? That is Ravana.

That was the impression of Hanuma, when he saw the king of Rakshasas. So Hanuma, who wanted to meet Ravana, and who used his strength as means to that goal, finally achieves his goal. He reaches the assembly of the King of Rakshasas. How that was achieved is story of this Sarga.

Now we proceed with Slokas of Sarga 48

||Sloka 48.01||

tatassarakṣō'dhipatirmahātmā
hanūmatākṣē nihatē kumārē|
manaḥ samādhāya sadēvakalpaṁ
samādidēśēṁdrajitaṁ sarōṣam||48.01||

sa|| tataḥ rakṣō'dhipatiḥ mahātmā hanumatā kumārē akṣē nihatē manaḥ samādhāya sarōṣaṁ dēvakalpaṁ iṁdrajitaṁ samādidēśa ||

Govindaraja Tika says- manaḥ samādhāya dhairyaṁ kr̥tvē ityarthaḥ|

Rama Tika says - manaḥ samādhāya sthirīkr̥ya śōkaṁ vimucya ityarthaḥ|

||Sloka meanings||

tataḥ rakṣō'dhipatiḥ -
the king of Rakshasas
mahātmā hanumatā kumārē akṣē nihatē -
after prince Aksha was killed by great Hanuman
manaḥ samādhāya -
controlling his mind
sarōṣaṁ dēvakalpaṁ iṁdrajitaṁ samādidēśa -
angrily ordered Indrajit who is like a gods

||Sloka summary||

"Angry because of prince Aksha being killed by great Hanuman ,the king of Rakshasas controlling his mind then ordered Indrajit who is like a god." ||48.01||

The Sarga starts with, "tataḥ sa rakṣō'dhipatir mahātmā." (48.01). The focus is on Ravana, the King of Rakshasas.

Ravana was angry because of the death of prince Aksha at the hands of Hanuma. Controlling his mind shaken by the events, Ravana orders Indrajit who is equal in prowess to Gods, to go and capture the Vanara.

Indrajit is the most powerful son of Ravana. He is knowledgeable about all weapons (astra vid) including Brahmastra. He has the power of penance (tapo balam). He has the confidence (ātma balam ca). He defeated Indra. He is known for trickery in battles which will be seen vividly in Yuddha Kanda. He is as powerful as Ravana himself. With him in the forefront Ravana has no worries So now the desperate Ravana turns to him. Ravana's speech reveals all about himself and Indrajit. Poet said earlier that with the death of Aksha Kumara,
'cakāra rakṣōdhipatērmahat bhayam' Ravana was gripped with great fear.

Now Ravana's words also reveal his fear.

Ravana tells Indrajit as follows.

tvamastravicchastravidāṁ variṣṭhaḥ
surāsurāṇāmapi śōkadātā|
surēṣusēṁdrēṣu ca dr̥ṣṭakarmā
pitāmahārādhanasaṁcitāstraḥ||48.02||

sa|| tvaṁ astravit śastravidāṁ variṣṭhaḥ | surāṇāṁ asurāṇāṁ api śōka dātā| sa
iṁdrēṣu surēṣu dr̥ṣṭakarmā | pitāmahārādhana saṁcitāstraḥ||

||Sloka meanings||

tvaṁ astravit śastravidāṁ variṣṭhaḥ -
you are knower of weapons and the best among the knowers of weapons too
surāṇāṁ asurāṇāṁ api śōka dātā -

you brought grief to Suras and Asuras
sa iṁdrēṣu surēṣu dr̥ṣṭakarmā -
warrior of proven ability among gods including Indra
pitāmahārādhana saṁcitāstraḥ -
acquired many weapons by propitiating Brahma

"You are knower of weapons and the best among the knowers of weapons too. You brought grief to Suras and Asuras. A warrior of proven ability among gods including Indra, you have acquired many weapons by propitiating Brahma". ||48.02||

||Sloka 48.03||

tavāstrabalamāsādya nāsurā na marudgaṇāḥ|
na śēkuḥ samarēsthātuṁ surēśvara samāśritāḥ||48.03||

sa|| tava astrabalaṁ āsādya na asurā na marudgaṇāḥ na surēśvaraḥ samāśritāḥ samarē sthātuṁ śēkuḥ ||

tava astrabalaṁ āsādya -
because of the strength of Astras you acquired,
na asurā na marudgaṇāḥ -
Asuras or Maruts
na surēśvaraḥ samāśritāḥ -
including Indra too
samarē sthātuṁ śēkuḥ -
cannot stand in front of you in a battle

"Because of the strength of Astras you acquired, Asuras or Maruts including Indra cannot stand in front of you in a battle."||48.03||

||Sloka 48.04||

nakaścit triṣu lōkēṣu saṁyugē na gataśramaḥ|
bhujavīryaguptaśca tapasā cābhirakṣitaḥ|
dēśakālavibhāgajñaḥ tvamēva matisattamaḥ||4||

sa||saṁyugēna gataśramaḥ kaścit triṣu lōkēṣu na | tvamēva matisattamaḥ bhujavīryābhiguptaśca tapasā abhirakṣitaḥ dēvakālavibhāgajñaḥ||

Rama Tika says- bhujavīryābhiguptaśca svabhujabalēna rakṣitaḥ |tapasā svatapōbalēna rakṣitaḥ|

Govindaraja Tika says- triṣu lōkēṣu tava saṁyugē na gata śramaḥ aprāpta śramaḥ kaścinna| sarvē prāptaśramāḥ ityarthaḥ||

saṁyugēna gataśramaḥ -
one who has not experienced fatigue
kaścit triṣu lōkēṣu na -
none in the war in the three worlds
tvamēva matisattamaḥ -
you are the most intelligent.
bhujavīryābhiguptaśca tapasā abhirakṣitaḥ -
protected by the strength of your own shoulders, protected with the power of penance
dēvakālabhāgajñaḥ -
aware of proper place and time for action

"There is none who has not experienced fatigue in the war in the three worlds. You are the most intelligent, protected by the strength of your own shoulders, protected with the power of penance. You are aware of proper place and time of action". ||48.04||

||Sloka 48.05||

natē'stvaśakyaṁ samarēṣu karmaṇā
na tē'styakāryaṁ matipūrva maṁtraṇē|
nasō'sti kaścit triṣu saṁgrahēṣu vai
na vēda yastē'strabalaṁ balaṁ ca tē||48.05||

sa|| samarēṣu karmaṇā tē aśakyaṁ nāsti| matipūrvamaṁtrēṇa tē akāryaṁ nāsti| triṣu saṁgrahēṣu yaḥ tē astrabalaṁ tē balaṁ ca na vēda saḥ kaścit nāsti||

samarēṣu karmaṇā tē aśakyaṁ nāsti -
nothing is impossible for you in war
matipūrvamaṁtrēṇa tē akāryaṁ nāsti -
with wise counsel there is no impossible act.
triṣu saṁgrahēṣu - in the three worlds
yaḥ tē astrabalaṁ tē balaṁ ca na vēda saḥ kaścit nāsti -
one who does not know the strength of your weapons and your power to recall a weapon you have discharged is not there.

||Sloka summary||

"There is nothing not possible for you in war. With wise counsel there is no impossible act. In the three worlds there is none who does not know the strength of your weapons and your power to recall a weapon you have discharged."||48.05||

||Sloka 48.06||

mamānurūpaṁ tapasō balaṁ ca tē
parākramaścāstrabalaṁ ca saṁyugē|
na tvāṁ samāsādya raṇāvamardē
manaḥ śramaṁ gaccati niścitārtham||48.06||

sa|| tē tapasaḥ balaṁ mama anurūpaṁ saṁyugē parākramaśca balaṁ ca | raṇāvamarthē tvāṁ samāsādya manaḥ niścitārthaṁ śramam na gacchati||

Tilaka Tika says- mama anurūpam mama sadr̥śam| raṇāvamardē yuddhasaṁgharṣē|

Rama Tika says- raṇāvamardē raṇasaṁkaṭē| niścitārtham niścitajayarūpārtham tvām āsādyavicintya mē manaḥ śramam na gachcati viṣādaṁ na gacchati ityarthaḥ|

||Sloka meanings||

tē tapasaḥ balaṁ mama anurūpaṁ -
your power of penance is equal to mine
saṁyugē parākramaśca balaṁ ca -
so are your valor and ability to discharge weapons in war
raṇāvamarthē tvāṁ samāsādya -
with you engaged in battle
manaḥ niścitārthaṁ śramam na gacchati -
my mind does not worry about the result

||Sloka summary||

"Your power of penance is equal to mine. So are your valor and ability to discharge weapons in war. With you engaged in battle , my mind does not worry about the result".||48.06||

These are Ravana's words. Hearing that Aksha was killed ivi 'cakāra rakṣōdhipatērmahat bhayam' ani vinnāmu. To face that Hanuman who created fear in his mind, he is all set to send his son. Now he expresses his concerns.

||Sloka 48.07||

nihatāḥ kiṁkarāḥ sarvē jaṁbumālīca rākṣasaḥ||48.07||
amātyaputtrā vīrāśca paṁcasēnāgrayāyinaḥ|
balāni susamr̥ddhāni sāśvanāgarathānica||48.08||

sa|| kiṁkarāḥ tathaiva jaṁbumālī ca amātyaputrāśca vīrāḥ ca paṁcasēnāgrayāyinaḥ balāni susamr̥ddhāni sa aśvanāgarathāni ca sarvē nihatāḥ ||

Rama Tika says- tat kartavyaṁ bōdhituṁ āha kiṁkarādayō nihatāḥ ityādi|

sahōdaraḥ tē dayitaḥ kumārō'kṣaśca sūditaḥ|
na hi tēṣvēva mē sārō yastvayyariniṣūdana||48.09||

sa||tē sahōdaraḥ dayitaḥ kumāraḥ akṣaḥ ca sūditaḥ | ariniṣūdana mē tvayi sāraḥ tēṣvēva na hi||

"Your dear brother prince Aksha too is killed. Oh Scourge of enemies I have real faith in you not them".||48.09||

idaṁ hi dr̥ṣṭvā matimanmahadbalam
kapēḥ prabhāvaṁ ca parākramaṁ ca|
tvamātmanaścāpi samīkṣya sāraṁ
kuruṣva vēgaṁ svabalānurūpam||48.10||

sa|| matiman tvaṁ kapēḥ idaṁ mahat balaṁ prabhāvaṁ ca parākramaṁ ca ātmanaḥ sāraṁ cāpi samīkṣya svabalānurūpaṁ vēgaṁ kuruṣva||

Govindaraja Tika says - balaṁ śarīraṁ| prabhāvaṁ antaḥ śāktam| parākramaṁ pauruṣaṁ||

balāvamardastvayi sannikr̥ṣṭē
yathāgatē śāmyati śāṁtaśatrau|
tathā samīkṣyātmabalaṁ paraṁ ca
samārabhasva astravidāṁ variṣṭha ||48.11||

sa|| astravidāṁ variṣṭha tvayi sannikr̥ṣṭē śāṁtaśatrau gatē balāvamarthaḥ yathā śāmyati tathā ātmabalaṁ paraṁ ca samīkṣya samārabhasva||

Govindaraja Tika says- tvayi sannikr̥ṣṭē kapērāsannē sati, yathā balāvamardaḥ sēnākṣayaḥ śāmyati tathā ātmabalaṁ paraṁ parabalaṁ ca samīkṣya samārabhasva | balanāśāt pūrvamēva śatr̥ sāṁtiṁ kuruṣva ityarthaḥ||

"Oh best among the experts in archery, going there and judging the strength, then approach the enemy and start the battle in a manner that does not cause further loss".||48.11||

||Sloka 48.12||

na vīra sēnā gaṇaśōcyavaṁti
na vajra mādāya viśālasāram|
na mārutasyāsya gatēḥ pramāṇam
na cāgnikalpaḥ karaṇēna haṁtum ||48.12||

sa|| vīra gaṇaśaḥ sēnāḥ cyavaṁti na | viśālasāraṁ vrajaṁ ādāya na | asya gatēḥ mārutasya| na pramāṇaṁ agnikalpaḥ karaṇēna hantuṁ na||

Govindaraja Tika says- hanumati nimittē sēnāḥ nāvanti na rakṣanti |ataḥ sēnābhiḥ māgacchēt ityarthaḥ| .. asya gati pramāṇaṁ mārutasya nāsti| mārutādapi atiśayitagatipramāṇam ityarthaḥ|.. agnikalpō hanumān karaṇēna muṣṭyādinā hantuṁ na śakyaḥ ityarthaḥ|

vīra gaṇaśaḥ sēnāḥ cyavaṁti na -
o hero, large armies need not go
viśālasāraṁ vrajaṁ ādāya na -
extraordinary thunderbolt also will not do
asya gatēḥ mārutasya na pramāṇaṁ-
even wind will not match his speed
agnikalpaḥ karaṇēna hantuṁ na -
like a sacrificial fire cannot be destroyed with any weapon

||Sloka summary||

"Oh hero, large armies need not go. With him having extraordinary vigor the bringing thunderbolt is no use. His speed cannot be matched by Maruti. He is like sacrificial fire which cannot be destroyed with any weapon." ||48.12||

Earlier , in the context of sending eth five Generals of the army, Ravana instructed them to carry the armed forces with them. Here, Ravana seems to say the opposite , realizing the futility of sending an army to attack Hanuman

tamēva marthaṁ prasamīkṣya samyak
svakarmasāmyāddhi samāhitātmā|
smaraṁ śca divyaṁ dhanuṣō'stravīryam
prajākṣataṁ karma samārabhasva||48.13||

sa|| taṁ ēvaṁ arthaṁ samyak prasamīkṣya svakarma sāmyāt samāhitātmā dhanuṣaḥ divyaṁ astravīryaṁ smaraṁ ca vraja karma akṣatāṁ samarabhasva||

Rama Tika says- svakarma sāmyāt - svakriyā sadr̥śaṁ saṁsmr̥tya samāhitātmā ēkāgracittaḥ svavijayarūpaṁ arthaṁ prasamīkṣya niścitya asya svakīyasya dhanuṣō vīryaṁ smaran san vraja akṣataṁ parairavināśyaṁ karma samārabhasva|

taṁ ēvaṁ arthaṁ samyak prasamīkṣya-
in that way assess the situation properly
svakarma sāmyāt samāhitātmā -
knowing your own capability and with single minded attention
dhanuṣaḥ divyaṁ astra vīryaṁ smaraṁ ca vraja -
recollecting the divine weapons with the bow move forward
karma akṣatāṁ samārabhasva-
start the action without being destroyed in the middle

"In that way assess the situation properly. Being a person of good judgement with single minded attention, recollecting the divine weapons with the bow move forward. Start the action without being destroyed in the middle". ||48.13||

||Sloka 48.14||

na khalviyaṁ matiḥ śrēṣṭhā
yattvāṁ saṁprēṣayāmyaham|
iyaṁ ca rājadharmāṇāṁ
kṣatrasya ca matirmatā||14||'

sa|| ahaṁ tvāṁ samprēṣayāmi iti yat iyaṁ matiḥ śrēṣṭhā na khalu | iyaṁ rājadharmaṇāṁ kṣatriyasya matiḥ matā||

Rama Tika says- ahaṁ tvāṁ saṁprēṣayāmiti yat iyaṁ matiḥ ydyapi śrēṣṭhā na , tathāpi rājadharmāṇāṁ kṣatrasya kṣatriyasya iyaṁ matiḥ matā śrēṣṭaḥ ityarthaḥ|

||Sloka meanings||

ahaṁ tvāṁ samprēṣayāmi iti -
that I am sending you to battle
yat iyaṁ matiḥ śrēṣṭhā na khalu -
does not appear good to my mind
iyaṁ rājadharmaṇāṁ -
this is in accordance with the statecraft
kṣatriyasya matiḥ matā -
duty of Kshatriyas too and hence this is approved

||Sloka summary||

"That I am sending you to battle, does not appear good to my mind. (However) This is in accordance with the statecraft and the duty of Kshatriyas. Hence this is approved." ||48.14||

||Sloka 48.15||

nānāśastraiśca saṁgrāmē vaiśāradyamariṁdama|
avaśya mēva yōddhavyaṁ kāmyaśca vijayō raṇē||15|

sa|| ariṁdama saṁgrāmē nānāśastrēṣu vaiśāradyaṁ avaśyamēva bōddhavyaṁ | raṇē vijayaśca kāmyaḥ ||

Govindaraja Tika says- nānāśastraiḥ vaiśāradyaṁ praharaṇa sāmarthyaṁ avaśyaṁ bōddhavyaṁ smartavyaṁ ityarthaḥ|raṇē vijayaśca kāmyaḥ prārthanīyaḥ|jayārthaṁ sarvāṇi astrāṇi smartavyāṇi ityarthaḥ||

ariṁdama saṁgrāmē -
Oh crusher of the enemies, in the war
nānāśastrēṣu vaiśāradyaṁ -
effective use of many weapons
avaśyamēva bōddhavyaṁ -
is surely to be known
raṇē vijayaśca kāmyaḥ -
victory in the war is wished for

"Oh crusher of the enemies, in the war ultimately effective use of many weapons is to be known. Victory in the war is wished for." ||48.15||

||Sloka 48.16||

tataḥ pitustadvacanaṁ niśamya
pradakṣiṇaṁ dakṣasuta prabhāvaḥ|
cakāra bhartāra madīnasattvō
raṇāya vīraḥ pratipannabuddhiḥ||48.16||

sa|| tataḥ dakṣasutaprabhāvaḥ vīraḥ pituḥ tat vacanaṁ niśamya adīnasattvaḥ raṇāya pratipannabuddhiḥ bhartāraṁ pradakṣiṇaṁ cakāra ||

Rama Tika says- dakṣasutaprabhāvaḥ dakṣasutānāṁ dēvānāṁ prabhāva iva prabhāvō yasya saḥ mēghanādaḥ|

tataḥ dakṣasutaprabhāvaḥ vīraḥ -
then the hero, powerful like the son of Daksha,
pituḥ tat vacanaṁ niśamya - hearing those words of his father
adīnasattvaḥ raṇāya pratipannabuddhiḥ -
without fear prepared in mind for war
bhartāraṁ pradakṣiṇaṁ cakāra -
went around his father with due respect

"Then the hero, powerful like the son of Daksha, who is never distressed in war, hearing those words of his father prepared in his mind went around his father with due respect."||48.16||

tata staiḥ svagaṇairiṣṭairiṁdrajit pratipūjitaḥ|
yuddōddataḥ kr̥tōtsāhaḥ saṁgrāmaṁ pratyapadyata ||48.17||

sa|| tataḥ yuddhōddhataḥ iṁdrajit iṣṭaiḥ taiḥ svagaṇaiḥ pratipūjitaḥ kr̥tōtsāhaḥ saṁgrāmaṁ pratipadyata ||

tataḥ yuddhōddhataḥ iṁdrajit -
then Indrajit rushed forth for the war
iṣṭaiḥ taiḥ svagaṇaiḥ pratipūjitaḥ -
being honored by people who loved him and his people
kr̥tōtsāhaḥ saṁgrāmaṁ pratipadyata -
with renewed vigor went ahead for the war

"Then he rushed forth for the war with renewed vigor after being honored by people who loved him and by his own people." ||48.17||

śrīmānpadmapalāśākṣō rākṣasādhipatēḥ sutaḥ|
nirjagāma mahātējāḥ samudra iva parvasu||48.18||

sa rathī dhanvināṁ śrēṣṭhaḥ śastrajñō'stravidāṁ varaḥ|

Implication is that Indrajit is aware of the fact that bound by other elements ropes etc, Hanuma is released by the Brahmastra. Further impediment is that once released by Brahmastra, no other weapon will be effective. So they are all in danger because Hanuma, captured with great effort is free. Hanuma too knows he is free, but wants to continue the charade to know more about Lanka.

The Vanara conveyed that he is a messenger of the King of Vanaras. 'By order of the King, I came from his place'. "dūtaḥsakāśāt ahamāgatō'smi|". Hanuman announces himself.

Thus, ends Sarga forty-eight of Sundarakanda in Ramayana
