Sarga 48

'તેજોબલસમાયુક્તં' means endowed with spirit and strength. 'તપંતમિવ ભાસ્કરમ્' means "shining like the Sun". Who is being described in such glowing terms? That is Ravana.

That was the impression of Hanuma, when he saw the king of Rakshasas. So Hanuma, who wanted to meet Ravana, and who used his strength as means to that goal, finally achieves his goal. He reaches the assembly of the King of Rakshasas. How that was achieved is story of this Sarga.

Now we proceed with Slokas of Sarga 48

||Sloka 48.01||

તતસ્સરક્ષોઽધિપતિર્મહાત્મા
હનૂમતાક્ષે નિહતે કુમારે|
મનઃ સમાધાય સદેવકલ્પં
સમાદિદેશેંદ્રજિતં સરોષમ્||48.01||

સ|| તતઃ રક્ષોઽધિપતિઃ મહાત્મા હનુમતા કુમારે અક્ષે નિહતે મનઃ સમાધાય સરોષં દેવકલ્પં ઇંદ્રજિતં સમાદિદેશ ||

Govindaraja Tika says- મનઃ સમાધાય ધૈર્યં કૃત્વે ઇત્યર્થઃ|

Rama Tika says - મનઃ સમાધાય સ્થિરીકૃય શોકં વિમુચ્ય ઇત્યર્થઃ|

||Sloka meanings||

તતઃ રક્ષોઽધિપતિઃ -
the king of Rakshasas
મહાત્મા હનુમતા કુમારે અક્ષે નિહતે -
after prince Aksha was killed by great Hanuman
મનઃ સમાધાય -
controlling his mind
સરોષં દેવકલ્પં ઇંદ્રજિતં સમાદિદેશ -
angrily ordered Indrajit who is like a gods

||Sloka summary||

"Angry because of prince Aksha being killed by great Hanuman ,the king of Rakshasas controlling his mind then ordered Indrajit who is like a god." ||48.01||

The Sarga starts with, "તતઃ સ રક્ષોઽધિપતિર્ મહાત્મા." (48.01). The focus is on Ravana, the King of Rakshasas.

Ravana was angry because of the death of prince Aksha at the hands of Hanuma. Controlling his mind shaken by the events, Ravana orders Indrajit who is equal in prowess to Gods, to go and capture the Vanara.

Indrajit is the most powerful son of Ravana. He is knowledgeable about all weapons (અસ્ત્ર વિદ્) including Brahmastra. He has the power of penance (તપો બલમ્). He has the confidence (આત્મ બલમ્ ચ). He defeated Indra. He is known for trickery in battles which will be seen vividly in Yuddha Kanda. He is as powerful as Ravana himself. With him in the forefront Ravana has no worries So now the desperate Ravana turns to him. Ravana's speech reveals all about himself and Indrajit. Poet said earlier that with the death of Aksha Kumara,
'ચકાર રક્ષોધિપતેર્મહત્ ભયમ્' Ravana was gripped with great fear.

Now Ravana's words also reveal his fear.

Ravana tells Indrajit as follows.

ત્વમસ્ત્રવિચ્છસ્ત્રવિદાં વરિષ્ઠઃ
સુરાસુરાણામપિ શોકદાતા|
સુરેષુસેંદ્રેષુ ચ દૃષ્ટકર્મા
પિતામહારાધનસંચિતાસ્ત્રઃ||48.02||

સ|| ત્વં અસ્ત્રવિત્ શસ્ત્રવિદાં વરિષ્ઠઃ | સુરાણાં અસુરાણાં અપિ શોક દાતા| સ

ત્વં અસ્ત્રવિત્ શસ્ત્રવિદાં વરિષ્ઠઃ -
you are knower of weapons and the best among the knowers of weapons too

સ ઇંદ્રેષુ સુરેષુ દૃષ્ટકર્મા -
warrior of proven ability among gods including Indra

ન શેકુઃ સમરેસ્થાતું સુરેશ્વર સમાશ્રિતાઃ||48.03||

તવ અસ્ત્રબલં આસાદ્ય -
because of the strength of Astras you acquired,
ન અસુરા ન મરુદ્ગણાઃ -
Asuras or Maruts
ન સુરેશ્વરઃ સમાશ્રિતાઃ -
including Indra too
સમરે સ્થાતું શેકુઃ -
cannot stand in front of you in a battle

"Because of the strength of Astras you acquired, Asuras or Maruts including Indra cannot stand in front of you in a battle."||48.03||

નકશ્ચિત્ ત્રિષુ લોકેષુ સંયુગે ન ગતશ્રમઃ|

સંયુગેન ગતશ્રમઃ -
one who has not experienced fatigue
કશ્ચિત્ ત્રિષુ લોકેષુ ન -
none in the war in the three worlds
ત્વમેવ મતિસત્તમઃ -

ભુજવીર્યાભિગુપ્તશ્ચ તપસા અભિરક્ષિતઃ -
protected by the strength of your own shoulders, protected with the power of penance

ન વેદ યસ્તેઽસ્ત્રબલં બલં ચ તે||48.05||

સ|| સમરેષુ કર્મણા તે અશક્યં નાસ્તિ| મતિપૂર્વમંત્રેણ તે અકાર્યં નાસ્તિ| ત્રિષુ સંગ્રહેષુ યઃ તે અસ્ત્રબલં તે બલં ચ ન વેદ સઃ કશ્ચિત્ નાસ્તિ||

સમરેષુ કર્મણા તે અશક્યં નાસ્તિ -
nothing is impossible for you in war
મતિપૂર્વમંત્રેણ તે અકાર્યં નાસ્તિ -
with wise counsel there is no impossible act.
ત્રિષુ સંગ્રહેષુ - in the three worlds
યઃ તે અસ્ત્રબલં તે બલં ચ ન વેદ સઃ કશ્ચિત્ નાસ્તિ -
one who does not know the strength of your weapons and your power to recall a weapon you have discharged is not there.

"There is nothing not possible for you in war. With wise counsel there is no impossible act. In the three worlds there is none who does not know the strength of your weapons and your power to recall a weapon you have discharged."||48.05||

મમાનુરૂપં તપસો બલં ચ તે
પરાક્રમશ્ચાસ્ત્રબલં ચ સંયુગે|
ન ત્વાં સમાસાદ્ય રણાવમર્દે
મનઃ શ્રમં ગચ્ચતિ નિશ્ચિતાર્થમ્||48.06||

સ|| તે તપસઃ બલં મમ અનુરૂપં સંયુગે પરાક્રમશ્ચ બલં ચ | રણાવમર્થે ત્વાં સમાસાદ્ય મનઃ નિશ્ચિતાર્થં શ્રમમ્ ન ગચ્છતિ||

Tilaka Tika says- મમ અનુરૂપમ્ મમ સદૃશમ્| રણાવમર્દે યુદ્ધસંઘર્ષે|

Rama Tika says- રણાવમર્દે રણસંકટે| નિશ્ચિતાર્થમ્ નિશ્ચિતજયરૂપાર્થમ્ ત્વામ્ આસાદ્યવિચિન્ત્ય મે મનઃ શ્રમમ્ ન ગછ્ચતિ વિષાદં ન ગચ્છતિ ઇત્યર્થઃ|

તે તપસઃ બલં મમ અનુરૂપં -
your power of penance is equal to mine
સંયુગે પરાક્રમશ્ચ બલં ચ -
so are your valor and ability to discharge weapons in war
રણાવમર્થે ત્વાં સમાસાદ્ય -
with you engaged in battle
મનઃ નિશ્ચિતાર્થં શ્રમમ્ ન ગચ્છતિ -
my mind does not worry about the result

||Sloka summary||

"Your power of penance is equal to mine. So are your valor and ability to discharge weapons in war. With you engaged in battle , my mind does not worry about the result".||48.06||

These are Ravana's words. Hearing that Aksha was killed ઇવિ 'ચકાર રક્ષોધિપતેર્મહત્ ભયમ્' અનિ વિન્નામુ. To face that Hanuman who created fear in his mind, he is all set to send his son. Now he expresses his concerns.

નિહતાઃ કિંકરાઃ સર્વે જંબુમાલીચ રાક્ષસઃ||48.07||
અમાત્યપુત્ત્રા વીરાશ્ચ પંચસેનાગ્રયાયિનઃ|
બલાનિ સુસમૃદ્ધાનિ સાશ્વનાગરથાનિચ||48.08||

સ|| કિંકરાઃ તથૈવ જંબુમાલી ચ અમાત્યપુત્રાશ્ચ વીરાઃ ચ પંચસેનાગ્રયાયિનઃ બલાનિ સુસમૃદ્ધાનિ સ અશ્વનાગરથાનિ ચ સર્વે નિહતાઃ ||

Rama Tika says- તત્ કર્તવ્યં બોધિતું આહ કિંકરાદયો નિહતાઃ ઇત્યાદિ|

બલાનિ સુસમૃદ્ધાનિ સ અશ્વનાગરથાનિ ચ -
forces fully provided with horses, elephants, and chariots
સર્વે નિહતાઃ -
all have been killed

ન મારુતસ્યાસ્ય ગતેઃ પ્રમાણમ્
ન ચાગ્નિકલ્પઃ કરણેન હંતુમ્ ||48.12||

વીર ગણશઃ સેનાઃ ચ્યવંતિ ન -
o hero, large armies need not go
વિશાલસારં વ્રજં આદાય ન -
extraordinary thunderbolt also will not do
અસ્ય ગતેઃ મારુતસ્ય ન પ્રમાણં-
even wind will not match his speed
અગ્નિકલ્પઃ કરણેન હન્તું ન -
like a sacrificial fire cannot be destroyed with any weapon

||Sloka summary||

"Oh hero, large armies need not go. With him having extraordinary vigor the bringing thunderbolt is no use. His speed cannot be matched by Maruti. He is like sacrificial fire which cannot be destroyed with any weapon." ||48.12||

Earlier , in the context of sending eth five Generals of the army, Ravana instructed them to carry the armed forces with them. Here, Ravana seems to say the opposite , realizing the futility of sending an army to attack Hanuman

તમેવ મર્થં પ્રસમીક્ષ્ય સમ્યક્
સ્વકર્મસામ્યાદ્ધિ સમાહિતાત્મા|
સ્મરં શ્ચ દિવ્યં ધનુષોઽસ્ત્રવીર્યમ્
પ્રજાક્ષતં કર્મ સમારભસ્વ||48.13||

સ|| તં એવં અર્થં સમ્યક્ પ્રસમીક્ષ્ય સ્વકર્મ સામ્યાત્ સમાહિતાત્મા ધનુષઃ દિવ્યં અસ્ત્રવીર્યં સ્મરં ચ વ્રજ કર્મ અક્ષતાં સમરભસ્વ||

Rama Tika says- સ્વકર્મ સામ્યાત્ - સ્વક્રિયા સદૃશં સંસ્મૃત્ય સમાહિતાત્મા એકાગ્રચિત્તઃ સ્વવિજયરૂપં અર્થં પ્રસમીક્ષ્ય નિશ્ચિત્ય અસ્ય સ્વકીયસ્ય ધનુષો વીર્યં સ્મરન્ સન્ વ્રજ અક્ષતં પરૈરવિનાશ્યં કર્મ સમારભસ્વ|

તં એવં અર્થં સમ્યક્ પ્રસમીક્ષ્ય-
in that way assess the situation properly
સ્વકર્મ સામ્યાત્ સમાહિતાત્મા -
knowing your own capability and with single minded attention
ધનુષઃ દિવ્યં અસ્ત્ર વીર્યં સ્મરં ચ વ્રજ -
recollecting the divine weapons with the bow move forward
કર્મ અક્ષતાં સમારભસ્વ-
start the action without being destroyed in the middle

"In that way assess the situation properly. Being a person of good judgement with single minded attention, recollecting the divine weapons with the bow move forward. Start the action without being destroyed in the middle". ||48.13||

ન ખલ્વિયં મતિઃ શ્રેષ્ઠા
યત્ત્વાં સંપ્રેષયામ્યહમ્|
ઇયં ચ રાજધર્માણાં
ક્ષત્રસ્ય ચ મતિર્મતા||14||'

Rama Tika says- અહં ત્વાં સંપ્રેષયામિતિ યત્ ઇયં મતિઃ ય્દ્યપિ શ્રેષ્ઠા ન , તથાપિ રાજધર્માણાં ક્ષત્રસ્ય ક્ષત્રિયસ્ય ઇયં મતિઃ મતા શ્રેષ્ટઃ ઇત્યર્થઃ|

ક્ષત્રિયસ્ય મતિઃ મતા -
duty of Kshatriyas too and hence this is approved

"That I am sending you to battle, does not appear good to my mind. (However) This is in accordance with the statecraft and the duty of Kshatriyas. Hence this is approved." ||48.14||

નાનાશસ્ત્રૈશ્ચ સંગ્રામે વૈશારદ્યમરિંદમ|
અવશ્ય મેવ યોદ્ધવ્યં કામ્યશ્ચ વિજયો રણે||15|

Rama Tika says- દક્ષસુતપ્રભાવઃ દક્ષસુતાનાં દેવાનાં પ્રભાવ ઇવ પ્રભાવો યસ્ય સઃ મેઘનાદઃ|

" Alas great effort has been wasted. Process of mantra is not considered by the Rakshasas. Released by the mantra no other weapon will work. Everything is doubtful now". ||48.51||

Implication is that Indrajit is aware of the fact that bound by other elements ropes etc, Hanuma is released by the Brahmastra. Further impediment is that once released by Brahmastra, no other weapon will be effective. So they are all in danger because Hanuma, captured with great effort is free. Hanuma too knows he is free, but wants to continue the charade to know more about Lanka.

The Vanara conveyed that he is a messenger of the King of Vanaras. 'By order of the King, I came from his place'. "દૂતઃસકાશાત્ અહમાગતોઽસ્મિ|". Hanuman announces himself.
