Sarga 63



"dr̥ṣṭā dēvī na saṁdēhō" means, "Sita has been seen, without a doubt"; and he adds, "Not by anybody else, by Hanuman only"; That is Sugriva's statement.


This speaks volumes about Sugriva's belief in Hanuma. Sugriva reached the conclusion even before Hanuma and others could report after Hanuma's safe return. No conversation about Hanuma's greatness can end, without out quoting this statement of Sugriva. How Sugriva reached that conclusion is the story of this Sarga.


There is another aspect that should be noted. That is about a commitment redeemed.


When this information was conveyed, Rama and Lakshmana were delighted. Looking at the delight of Rama and Lakshmana, which is reflected in their eyes. Sugriva was delighted (nananda 63.27). Valmiki describes that happy scene. ‘The duo of princes was overjoyed. It could be seen in their eyes that expanded in delight. With their object all but met, all their limbs were filled with happiness. The king of Vanaras too was extremely delighted, knowing that the successful end of his mission is within reach. bāhvōrāsannāṁ means hastaprāptamiva, As though it is within his hands reach!


Sugriva who has committed to take up search for Sita, in return for getting Vanara kingdom, now almost feels like he discharged his responsibility. And so, he is delighted. A commitment has been redeemed. Thus there is happiness shared by all the three in this Sarga. This is also the first occasion, in Sundarakanda, where Rama's, who is always present in the background, is acknowledged as being physically present.


Now we go through the Slokas of Sarga sixty-three.


||Sloka 63.01||


tatō mūrdhnā nipatitaṁ vānaraṁ vānararṣabhaḥ |

dr̥ṣṭvaivō dvignahr̥dayō vāktamēta duvāca ha ||63.01||


sa|| tataḥ vānararṣabhaḥ mūrdhnā nipatitaṁ vānaraṁ dr̥ṣṭvā udvigna hr̥dayaḥ ētat  vākyaṁ uvāca ha ||

tataḥ vānararṣabhaḥ - 

then the bull among Vanaras

mūrdhnā nipatitaṁ vānaraṁ dr̥ṣṭvā - 

seeing Dadhimukha fallen at his feet

udvigna hr̥dayaḥ - 

being anxious

ētat vākyaṁ uvāca ha- 

spoke these words

Then the bull among Vanaras, seeing Dadhimukha fallen at his feet, being anxious spoke these words. ||63.01||

uttiṣṭōttiṣṭha kasmāttvaṁ pādayōḥ patitō mama |

abhayaṁ tē bhavēt vīra sarva mēvābhidīyatām ||63.02||


sa|| vīra uttiṣṭha uttiṣṭha kasmāt mama pādayōḥ tvaṁ patitaḥ | tē abhayaṁ bhavēt | sarvaṁ ēva abhidhīyatām ||

vīra uttiṣṭha uttiṣṭha - 

oh hero, get up, get up

kasmāt mama pādayōḥ tvaṁ patitaḥ - 

why are you falling at my feet?

tē abhayaṁ bhavēt - you have no fear 

sarvaṁ ēva abhidhīyatām - 

everything may be told

"Oh Hero ! Get up, get up. Why are you falling at my feet ? Have no fear .You may tell everything". ||63.02||

sa tu viśvāsitaḥ tēna sugrīvēṇa mahātmanā |

utthāya sumahāprājñō vākyaṁ dadhimukhōbravīt ||63.03||


sa|| sumahāprājñaḥ dadhimukhaḥ tēna sugrīvēṇa viśvāśitaḥ utthāya saḥ vākyaḥ abravīt||

sumahāprājñaḥ dadhimukhaḥ - 

very wise Dadhimukha

tēna sugrīvēṇa viśvāśitaḥ - 

thus assured by Sugriva

utthāya saḥ vākyaḥ abravīt - 

got up and spoke the following words

naivarkṣa rajasā rājan na tvayā nāpi vālinā |

vanaṁ visr̥ṣṭapūrvaṁ hi bhakṣitaṁ tacca vānaraiḥ ||63.04||


sa|| rājan r̥kṣarajasā naiva  tvayā na vālinā api vanaṁ viśruṣṭapūrvaṁ tacca vānaraiḥ bhakṣitam||


Tilaka Tikaa says - naiva viśruṣṭapūrvaṁ vānarēbhyō yathēcchabhōgāya kadāpi na anujñātam

Govindaraja Tika says - gōvindarāja ṭīkālō- na visruṣṭapūrvaṁ yathēcchabhōgāya na dattaṁ 


||Sloka meanings||


rājan r̥kṣarajasā naiva -

 o king, neither by Ruksharajasa

tvayā na vālinā api - 

or even before by you or Vali 

naiva viśruṣṭapūrvaṁ hi - 

which was not accessible for enjoyment.  

tacca vanaṁ vānaraiḥ bhakṣitam-

 that grove was  eaten by Vanaras


||Sloka summary||


Oh Rajan ! That grove (Madhuvan)  which is not accessible in the time of Ruksharajasa or even before or in Vali's time or yours , was eaten by Vanaras. ||63.04||

ēbhiḥ pradarṣitāścaiva vānarā vanarakṣibhiḥ | 

madhūnyacintayatvēmān bhakṣayaṁti pibaṁti ca ||63.05||


sa|| ēbhiḥ vanarakṣibhiḥ pradharṣitaścaēva imān acintayitvā madhūni bhakṣyanti pibanti ca|| 


Rama Tika says- acintayitvā aparigaṇya

ēbhiḥ imān vanarakṣibhiḥ pradharṣitaścaēva - 

though resisted by the guards of the grove

acintayitvā - 

without caring 

madhūni bhakṣyanti pibanti ca- 

they ate honey combs and drank too

"Even though resisted by the guards of the grove, without caring for them, they ate honey combs and drank too. ||63.05||

śiṣṭamatrāpavidhyaṁti bhakṣayaṁti tathāparē |

nivāryamāṇāstē sarvē bhruvau vai darśayaṁti hi ||63.06||


sa||  śiṣṭaṁ atra apavidhyanti | aparē tathā bhakṣayanti| tē sarvē nivāryamānaḥ bhr̥vaḥ darśayanti ca||


Tilaka Tika says- bhruvau bhr̥kuṭīṁ vakrau kurvanti|

Rama Tika says - aparē bhakṣayanti śiṣṭamaviśiṣṭaṁ apavidhyanti prakṣipanti ca nivāryamāṇāḥ santaḥ bhrukuṭīṁ darśayanti ca|

śiṣṭaṁ atra apavidhyanti - 

left overs were thrown off.

aparē tathā bhakṣayanti - 

similarly others were eating

tē sarvē nivāryamāṇaḥ - 

when they were prevented

they raised their eyebrows

imē hi saṁrabdhatarāḥ tathā taiḥ saṁpradharṣitāḥ |

vārayaṁtō vanāt tasmāt kruddhairvānarapuṁgavaiḥ ||63.07||


sa|| tathā tasmāt vanāt vārayantaḥ saṁrabdhatarāḥ  kruddhaiḥ taiḥ vānarapuṁgavaiḥ imē saṁpradharṣitāḥ ||

Rama Tika says - saṁrabdhatarāḥ nivāraṇaphalaka yatnavantaḥ|

tathā tasmāt vanāt vārayantaḥ - 

when prevented from that grove

saṁrabdhatarāḥ kruddhaiḥ taiḥ vānarapuṁgavaiḥ - 

enraged and angry Vanaras with the ones stopping them 

imē saṁpradharṣitāḥ - ill-treated them

'When prevented from that grove, the enraged and angry Vanaras  ill-treated the  ones trying to stop them'. ||63.07||

tatastairbahubhirvīraiḥ vānarairvānararṣabhaḥ |

saṁraktanayanaiḥ krōdhāddarayaḥ pravicālitāḥ ||63.08||


sa|| vānararṣabha tataḥ krōdhāt saṁraktanayanaiḥ vīraiḥ bahubhiḥ taiḥ vānaraiḥ harayaḥ pravicālitaḥ||


Rama tika says- harayaḥ madanuyāyī vānarāḥ (rakṣakaḥ ityarthaḥ)

vānararṣabha tataḥ - 

then o bull among Vanaras 

krōdhāt saṁraktanayanaiḥ vīraiḥ -

by heroes who were angry and with red eyes,

taiḥ vānaraiḥ bahubhiḥ -  

by many of those Vanaras

harayaḥ pravicālitaḥ- 

guards were chased away

'Then many of the heroes who were angry and with red eyes, chased away the guards'.||63.08||

pāṇibhirnihatāḥ kēcit kēcit jānubhirāhatāḥ |

prakr̥ṣṭāśca yathākāmaṁ dēvamārgaṁ ca darśitāḥ ||63.09||


sa|| kēcit pāṇibhiḥ nihatāḥ| kēcit jānubhiḥ āhatāḥ| yathākāmaṁ prakr̥ṣṭāḥ dēvamārgaṁ darśitāḥ ca||

kēcit pāṇibhiḥ nihatāḥ - some were hit with hands

kēcit jānubhiḥ āhatāḥ - some were hit by their knees

yathākāmaṁ prakr̥ṣṭāḥ - were dragged as they liked

dēvamārgaṁ darśitāḥ ca- thrown into the sky

'Some were hit with hands. Some were hit by their knees. Some were dragged as they liked and were thrown threw into the sky.' ||63.09||

ēva mētē hatāḥ śūrāḥ tvayi tiṣṭhati bhartari |

kr̥tsnaṁ madhuvanaṁ caiva prakāmaṁ taiḥ prabhakṣyatē ||63.10||


sa|| tvayi bhartari tiṣṭhati ētē śūrāḥ ēvaṁ hatāḥ | taiḥ kr̥tsnaṁ madhuvanaṁ caiva prakāmaṁ prabhakṣyatē||

tvayi bhartari tiṣṭhati - 

even when you are the king

ētē śūrāḥ ēvaṁ hatāḥ - 

these heroes were hit in this way

taiḥ kr̥tsnaṁ madhuvanaṁ ca -

they destroyed the Madhuvan 

ēva prakāmaṁ prabhakṣyatē - 

devoured the honey as they liked

 vānararṣabhaṁ sugrīvaṁ - 

Sugriva , the bull among Vanaras 

 taṁ ēvaṁ vijñāpyamānaṁ - 

him who was thus being informed

mahāprājñaḥ paravīraha - 

wise one and killer of enemies 

lakṣmaṇaḥ apr̥cchat - 

Lakshmana asked thus

The bull among Vanaras, who was thus being informed, was asked by Lakshmana who is wise, and  who is the killer of enemies. ||63.11||

kimayaṁ vānarō rājan vanapaḥ pratyupasthitaḥ |

kaṁ cārthamabhinirdiśya duḥkhitō vākyamabravīt ||63.12||


sa|| rājan kiṁ  vanapaḥ ayaḥ vānaraḥ  pratyupasthitaḥ | duḥkhitaḥ kiṁ | artham abhinirdisya vākyaṁ abravīt ||


Rama Tika says - kimiti| hē rājan ayaṁ vanapaḥ kiṁ kimarthaṁ pratyupasthitaḥ | kimarthaṁ abhinirdisya bodhayitvā duḥkhitaḥ san abravīt |

rājan kiṁ  vanapaḥ -

 o king why this protector of forest

ayaḥ vānaraḥ  pratyupasthitaḥ- this Vanara is here 

duḥkhitaḥ kiṁ artham - why is he sad?

 abhinirdisya vākyaṁ abravīt - 

for what purpose he is telling

'Oh King ! Why is this protector of forest here? Why is he sad. For what purpose he is telling'.||63.12||

ēvamuktastu sugrīvō lakṣmaṇēna mahātmanā |

lakṣmaṇaṁ pratyuvācēdaṁ vākyaṁ vākyaviśāradaḥ ||63.13||


sa|| mahātmanā lakṣmaṇēna ēvaṁ uktaḥ sugrīvaḥ vākyaviśāradaḥ idaṁ vākyaṁ lakṣmaṇaṁ pratyuvāca||

ārya lakṣmaṇa - o venerable one , Lakshmana

vīraḥ dadhimukhaḥ kapiḥ saṁprāha - 

 valiant Dadhimukha is saying

aṁgada pramukhaiḥ vīraiḥ -

vānaraiḥ madhu bhakṣitaṁ -

 honey has been consumed by Vanaras 

dakṣiṇām āśāṁ vicintya āgataiḥ  - 

who have come after searching in southern direction.

'Oh Venerable one ! Dadhimukha is saying that fruits and honey have been consumed by the Vanara heroes Angada and others, who have come after their search for Sita in the southern direction'. ||63.14||

naiṣāmakr̥takr̥tyānāṁ īdr̥śassyādupakramaḥ ||63.15||

agataiśca pramathitaṁ yathā madhuvanaṁ hi taiḥ |

dharṣitaṁ ca vanaṁ kr̥tsnamupayuktaṁ ca vānaraiḥ ||63.16||


sa|| āgataiḥ taiḥ vānaraiḥ madhuvanaṁ yathā pramathitaṁ kr̥tsnaṁ vanaṁ dharṣitaṁ upayuktaṁ ca ēṣāṁ akr̥takr̥tyānāṁ īdr̥śaḥ upakramaḥ na syāt ||

by those Vanaras who have come 

madhuvanaṁ yathā pramathitaṁ - 

the way the Madhuvan was destroyed

the garden was entered and used too

ēṣāṁ akr̥takr̥tyānāṁ - 

those who have not accomplished their task 

īdr̥śaḥ upakramaḥ na syāt -

vanaṁ yada’bhipannāstē sādhitaṁ karmavānaraiḥ |

dr̥ṣṭā dēvī na saṁdēhō na cānyēna hanūmatā ||63.17||


sa|| tē yadā vanaṁ abhipannāḥ vānaraiḥ karma sādhitaṁ | dēvī dr̥ṣṭā | na saṁdēhaḥ na anyēna na hanumatā ||

tē yadā vanaṁ abhipannāḥ - 

the way they entered the grove

vānaraiḥ karma sādhitaṁ - 

task must have been accomplished by the Vanaras 

dēvī dr̥ṣṭā na saṁdēhaḥ - 

they have seen the divine lady without any doubt

na anyēna na hanumatā - 

by Hanuman, not any other

'The way they, the Vanaras, entered the grove, they must have accomplished their task.  The divine lady has been seen without any doubt, by Hanuman and no other'. ||63.17||

na hyanyaḥ sādhanē hētuḥ karmaṇō’sya hanūmataḥ |

kāryasiddhirmatiścaiva tasminvānarapuṁgavē ||63.18||

vyavasāyaśca vīryaṁ ca śrutaṁ cāpi pratiṣṭitam |


sa|| asya karmanaḥ sādhanē hanūmataḥ anyaḥ hētuḥ na hi kāryasiddhiḥ matiścaiva vyavasāyaśca vīryaṁ ca  śrutaṁ cāpi tasmin vānarapuṁgavē pratiṣṭhitām ||

asya karmaṇaḥ sādhanē  - 

for achieving this task Hanuman

anyaḥ hētuḥ na hi - 

not possible for others 

hanūmataḥ kāryasiddhiḥ matiścaiva - 

Hanuman has the capacity to accomplish the task, the wisdom

vyavasāyaśca vīryaṁ ca  śrutaṁ cāpi - 

the effort, the strength and the knowledge of scriptures 

tasmin vānarapuṁgavē pratiṣṭhitām - 

are all well established in him the best of Vanaras '

In achieving this task only Hanuman has the ability because the capacity to accomplish the task, the wisdom , the effort, the strength and the enthusiasm ( to accomplish the task ) are all well established in him'.||63.18||

jāṁbavānyatra nētāsyādaṁgadaśca mahābalaḥ ||63.19|| 

hanumāṁścāpyadhiṣṭhātā na tasya gati ranyathā |


sa|| yatra jāmbavān nētā syāt mahābalaḥ aṁgadasya ca hanumāṁśca adhitiṣṭhatā tasya gatiḥ anyathā na||

yatra jāmbavān nētā syāt - 

where Jambavan is the leader

mahābalaḥ aṁgadasya ca - 

mighty Angada and

hanumāṁśca adhitiṣṭhatā - 

Hanuman are directing

tasya gatiḥ anyathā na - 

there the result has to be this only not otherwise.

'Where Jambavan is the leader, where the mighty Angada and Hanuman are directing, there the result has to be this only not otherwise.' ||63.19||

aṁgadapramukhairvīraiḥ hataṁ madhuvanaṁ kila ||63.20||

vārayaṁtaśca sahitāḥ tathā jānubhirāhatāḥ |


sa|| aṁgadapramukhaiḥ vīraiḥ madhuvanaṁ hataṁ kila|  sahitāḥ vārayantaśca tadā jānubhiḥ āhatāḥ||

aṁgadapramukhaiḥ vīraiḥ - 

Angada and other leaders

madhuvanaṁ hataṁ kila  -

 indeed destroyed the Madhuvan

nāmnā dadhimukhō nāma hariḥ prakhyātavikramaḥ |


sa|| nāmnā dadhimukhō nāma prakhyāt vikramaḥ hariḥ ētat arthaṁ vaktuṁ madhuravāk iha prāptaḥ||

nāmnā dadhimukhō nāma - 

hero named Dadhimukha

prakhyāt vikramaḥ hariḥ - 

Vanara known for his valor 

ētat madhuravāk arthaṁ vaktuṁ - 

to tell the sweet words

'Hence the hero named Dadhimukha, a Vanara  known for his valor came here to tell the sweet words'.||63.21||

dr̥ṣṭā sītā mahābāhō saumitrē paśyatattvataḥ ||63.22||

abhigamya tathā sarvē pibaṁti madhu vānarāḥ|


sa|| mahābāhō saumitrē sītā tattvataḥ dr̥ṣṭā|  paśya tathā vānarāḥ sarvē abhigamya madhu pibanti||

mahābāhō saumitrē - o mighty Saumitra 

sītā tattvataḥ dr̥ṣṭā - Sita was truly seen

paśya tathā sarvē  vānarāḥ - see all the Vanaras

na cāpyadr̥ṣṭvā vaidēhīṁ viśrutāḥ puruṣarṣabha ||63.23||

vanaṁ dattavaraṁ  divyaṁ dharṣayēyurvanaukasaḥ |


sa|| puruṣarṣabha viśrutāḥ vanaukasaḥ vaidēhīṁ adr̥ṣṭvā dattavaraṁ divyaṁ vanaṁ na dharṣayēyuḥ||

puruṣarṣabha  - o bull among men

viśrutāḥ vanaukasaḥ vaidēhīṁ adr̥ṣṭvā - 

without seeing Sita, the renowned Vanaras,

na dharṣayēyuḥ -

śrutvā karṇasukhāṁ vāṇīṁ sugrīva vadanāccyutām |

prāhr̥ṣyata bhr̥śaṁ rāmō lakṣmaṇaśca mahābalaḥ ||63.25||


sa|| tataḥ saha rāghavaḥ dharmātmā lakṣmaṇaḥ prahr̥ṣṭaḥ sugrīvavadanāt cyutaṁ karṇasukhāṁ vāṇīṁ śrutvā  prāhr̥ṣyata| rāmaḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ mahābalaḥ ca bhr̥śaṁ prāhr̥ṣyata ||

tataḥ saha rāghavaḥ dharmātmā lakṣmaṇaḥ- 

then along with Rama righteous Lakshmana

prāhr̥ṣyata  - were delighted 

 karṇasukhāṁ vāṇīṁ śrutvā - 

hearing those words which were pleasing to the ears.

prahr̥ṣṭaḥ sugrīvavadanāt cyutaṁ  - 

said from lips of delighted Sugriva 

rāmaḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ mahābalaḥ ca - 

Rama and the mighty hero Lakshmana too

bhr̥śaṁ prāhr̥ṣyata- were very delighted

Then Lakshmana along with Raghava was delighted by the words spoken by Sugriva which were pleasing to the ears. Rama was delighted. The mighty hero Lakshmana too was delighted. ||63.24,25||

felt a thrill all over his body,

karmasiddhiṁ  āsannāṁ viditvā - 

realizing that time achieving the task has come.

atimātraṁ nananda - was very delighted

Sugriva the king of Vanaras , eyes filled with joy, seeing the delighted young princes, delighted at the fulfilment of the task, felt a thrill all over his body, realizing that good time has come. And he was delighted. ||63.29||
