Sarga 63

"દૃષ્ટા દેવી ન સંદેહો" means, "Sita has been seen, without a doubt"; and he adds, "Not by anybody else, by Hanuman only"; That is Sugriva's statement.

This speaks volumes about Sugriva's belief in Hanuma. Sugriva reached the conclusion even before Hanuma and others could report after Hanuma's safe return. No conversation about Hanuma's greatness can end, without out quoting this statement of Sugriva. How Sugriva reached that conclusion is the story of this Sarga.

There is another aspect that should be noted. That is about a commitment redeemed.

When this information was conveyed, Rama and Lakshmana were delighted. Looking at the delight of Rama and Lakshmana, which is reflected in their eyes. Sugriva was delighted (નનન્દ 63.27). Valmiki describes that happy scene. ‘The duo of princes was overjoyed. It could be seen in their eyes that expanded in delight. With their object all but met, all their limbs were filled with happiness. The king of Vanaras too was extremely delighted, knowing that the successful end of his mission is within reach. બાહ્વોરાસન્નાં means હસ્તપ્રાપ્તમિવ, As though it is within his hands reach!

Sugriva who has committed to take up search for Sita, in return for getting Vanara kingdom, now almost feels like he discharged his responsibility. And so, he is delighted. A commitment has been redeemed. Thus there is happiness shared by all the three in this Sarga. This is also the first occasion, in Sundarakanda, where Rama's, who is always present in the background, is acknowledged as being physically present.

Now we go through the Slokas of Sarga sixty-three.

તતો મૂર્ધ્ના નિપતિતં વાનરં વાનરર્ષભઃ |

દૃષ્ટ્વૈવો દ્વિગ્નહૃદયો વાક્તમેત દુવાચ હ ||63.01||

સ|| તતઃ વાનરર્ષભઃ મૂર્ધ્ના નિપતિતં વાનરં દૃષ્ટ્વા ઉદ્વિગ્ન હૃદયઃ એતત્  વાક્યં ઉવાચ હ ||

તતઃ વાનરર્ષભઃ - 

then the bull among Vanaras

મૂર્ધ્ના નિપતિતં વાનરં દૃષ્ટ્વા - 

seeing Dadhimukha fallen at his feet

ઉદ્વિગ્ન હૃદયઃ - 

being anxious

એતત્ વાક્યં ઉવાચ હ- 

spoke these words

oh hero, get up, get up

કસ્માત્ મમ પાદયોઃ ત્વં પતિતઃ - 

why are you falling at my feet?

તે અભયં ભવેત્ - you have no fear 

સર્વં એવ અભિધીયતામ્ - 

everything may be told

"Oh Hero ! Get up, get up. Why are you falling at my feet ? Have no fear .You may tell everything". ||63.02||

Govindaraja Tika says - ગોવિન્દરાજ ટીકાલો- ન વિસ્રુષ્ટપૂર્વં યથેચ્છભોગાય ન દત્તં

રાજન્ ઋક્ષરજસા નૈવ -

 o king, neither by Ruksharajasa

ત્વયા ન વાલિના અપિ - 

or even before by you or Vali 

નૈવ વિશ્રુષ્ટપૂર્વં હિ - 

which was not accessible for enjoyment.  

તચ્ચ વનં વાનરૈઃ ભક્ષિતમ્-

 that grove was  eaten by Vanaras

Oh Rajan ! That grove (Madhuvan)  which is not accessible in the time of Ruksharajasa or even before or in Vali's time or yours , was eaten by Vanaras. ||63.04||

એભિઃ પ્રદર્ષિતાશ્ચૈવ વાનરા વનરક્ષિભિઃ |

they ate honey combs and drank too

Rama Tika says - અપરે ભક્ષયન્તિ શિષ્ટમવિશિષ્ટં અપવિધ્યન્તિ પ્રક્ષિપન્તિ ચ નિવાર્યમાણાઃ સન્તઃ ભ્રુકુટીં દર્શયન્તિ ચ|

શિષ્ટં અત્ર અપવિધ્યન્તિ -

અપરે તથા ભક્ષયન્તિ -

સંરબ્ધતરાઃ ક્રુદ્ધૈઃ તૈઃ વાનરપુંગવૈઃ - 

enraged and angry Vanaras with the ones stopping them 

ઇમે સંપ્રધર્ષિતાઃ - ill-treated them

'When prevented from that grove, the enraged and angry Vanaras  ill-treated the  ones trying to stop them'. ||63.07||

સંરક્તનયનૈઃ ક્રોધાદ્દરયઃ પ્રવિચાલિતાઃ ||63.08||

વાનરર્ષભ તતઃ - 

then o bull among Vanaras 

ક્રોધાત્ સંરક્તનયનૈઃ વીરૈઃ -

by heroes who were angry and with red eyes,

તૈઃ વાનરૈઃ બહુભિઃ -  

by many of those Vanaras

હરયઃ પ્રવિચાલિતઃ- 

guards were chased away

'Then many of the heroes who were angry and with red eyes, chased away the guards'.||63.08||

પાણિભિર્નિહતાઃ કેચિત્ કેચિત્ જાનુભિરાહતાઃ |

પ્રકૃષ્ટાશ્ચ યથાકામં દેવમાર્ગં ચ દર્શિતાઃ ||63.09||

કેચિત્ જાનુભિઃ આહતાઃ - some were hit by their knees

યથાકામં પ્રકૃષ્ટાઃ - were dragged as they liked

દેવમાર્ગં દર્શિતાઃ ચ- thrown into the sky

'Some were hit with hands. Some were hit by their knees. Some were dragged as they liked and were thrown threw into the sky.' ||63.09||

એવ મેતે હતાઃ શૂરાઃ ત્વયિ તિષ્ઠતિ ભર્તરિ |

કૃત્સ્નં મધુવનં ચૈવ પ્રકામં તૈઃ પ્રભક્ષ્યતે ||63.10||

સ|| ત્વયિ ભર્તરિ તિષ્ઠતિ એતે શૂરાઃ એવં હતાઃ | તૈઃ કૃત્સ્નં મધુવનં ચૈવ પ્રકામં પ્રભક્ષ્યતે||

ત્વયિ ભર્તરિ તિષ્ઠતિ - 

even when you are the king

એતે શૂરાઃ એવં હતાઃ - 

these heroes were hit in this way

તૈઃ કૃત્સ્નં મધુવનં ચ -

they destroyed the Madhuvan 

એવ પ્રકામં પ્રભક્ષ્યતે - 

devoured the honey as they liked

for what purpose he is telling

'Oh King ! Why is this protector of forest here? Why is he sad. For what purpose he is telling'.||63.12||

વીરઃ દધિમુખઃ કપિઃ સંપ્રાહ -

અંગદ પ્રમુખૈઃ વીરૈઃ - 

by Angada and other heroes 

વાનરૈઃ મધુ ભક્ષિતં -

 honey has been consumed by Vanaras 

દક્ષિણામ્ આશાં વિચિન્ત્ય આગતૈઃ  - 

who have come after searching in southern direction.

'Oh Venerable one ! Dadhimukha is saying that fruits and honey have been consumed by the Vanara heroes Angada and others, who have come after their search for Sita in the southern direction'. ||63.14||

નૈષામકૃતકૃત્યાનાં ઈદૃશસ્સ્યાદુપક્રમઃ ||63.15||

અગતૈશ્ચ પ્રમથિતં યથા મધુવનં હિ તૈઃ |

ધર્ષિતં ચ વનં કૃત્સ્નમુપયુક્તં ચ વાનરૈઃ ||63.16||

સ|| આગતૈઃ તૈઃ વાનરૈઃ મધુવનં યથા પ્રમથિતં કૃત્સ્નં વનં ધર્ષિતં ઉપયુક્તં ચ એષાં અકૃતકૃત્યાનાં ઈદૃશઃ ઉપક્રમઃ ન સ્યાત્ ||

આગતૈઃ તૈઃ વાનરૈઃ - 

by those Vanaras who have come 

મધુવનં યથા પ્રમથિતં - 

the way the Madhuvan was destroyed 

કૃત્સ્નં વનં ધર્ષિતં ઉપયુક્તં ચ - 

the garden was entered and used too

એષાં અકૃતકૃત્યાનાં - 

those who have not accomplished their task 

ઈદૃશઃ ઉપક્રમઃ ન સ્યાત્ - 

will not be doing thus

'The way the Madhuvan is entered and destroyed, it is not done by those who have not accomplished their task'. ||63.15,16||

વનં યદઽભિપન્નાસ્તે સાધિતં કર્મવાનરૈઃ |

દૃષ્ટા દેવી ન સંદેહો ન ચાન્યેન હનૂમતા ||63.17||

સ|| તે યદા વનં અભિપન્નાઃ વાનરૈઃ કર્મ સાધિતં | દેવી દૃષ્ટા | ન સંદેહઃ ન અન્યેન ન હનુમતા ||

તે યદા વનં અભિપન્નાઃ - 

the way they entered the grove

વાનરૈઃ કર્મ સાધિતં - 

task must have been accomplished by the Vanaras 

દેવી દૃષ્ટા ન સંદેહઃ - 

they have seen the divine lady without any doubt

ન અન્યેન ન હનુમતા - 

by Hanuman, not any other

'The way they, the Vanaras, entered the grove, they must have accomplished their task.  The divine lady has been seen without any doubt, by Hanuman and no other'. ||63.17||

ન હ્યન્યઃ સાધને હેતુઃ કર્મણોઽસ્ય હનૂમતઃ |

કાર્યસિદ્ધિર્મતિશ્ચૈવ તસ્મિન્વાનરપુંગવે ||63.18||

વ્યવસાયશ્ચ વીર્યં ચ શ્રુતં ચાપિ પ્રતિષ્ટિતમ્ |

સ|| અસ્ય કર્મનઃ સાધને હનૂમતઃ અન્યઃ હેતુઃ ન હિ કાર્યસિદ્ધિઃ મતિશ્ચૈવ વ્યવસાયશ્ચ વીર્યં ચ  શ્રુતં ચાપિ તસ્મિન્ વાનરપુંગવે પ્રતિષ્ઠિતામ્ ||

અસ્ય કર્મણઃ સાધને  - 

for achieving this task Hanuman

અન્યઃ હેતુઃ ન હિ - 

not possible for others 

હનૂમતઃ કાર્યસિદ્ધિઃ મતિશ્ચૈવ - 

Hanuman has the capacity to accomplish the task, the wisdom

વ્યવસાયશ્ચ વીર્યં ચ  શ્રુતં ચાપિ - 

the effort, the strength and the knowledge of scriptures 

તસ્મિન્ વાનરપુંગવે પ્રતિષ્ઠિતામ્ - 

are all well established in him the best of Vanaras '

In achieving this task only Hanuman has the ability because the capacity to accomplish the task, the wisdom , the effort, the strength and the enthusiasm ( to accomplish the task ) are all well established in him'.||63.18||

જાંબવાન્યત્ર નેતાસ્યાદંગદશ્ચ મહાબલઃ ||63.19|| 

હનુમાંશ્ચાપ્યધિષ્ઠાતા ન તસ્ય ગતિ રન્યથા |

સ|| યત્ર જામ્બવાન્ નેતા સ્યાત્ મહાબલઃ અંગદસ્ય ચ હનુમાંશ્ચ અધિતિષ્ઠતા તસ્ય ગતિઃ અન્યથા ન||

where Jambavan is the leader

મહાબલઃ અંગદસ્ય ચ - 

mighty Angada and

તસ્ય ગતિઃ અન્યથા ન - 

there the result has to be this only not otherwise.

તતઃ સહ રાઘવઃ ધર્માત્મા લક્ષ્મણઃ- 

then along with Rama righteous Lakshmana

 કર્ણસુખાં વાણીં શ્રુત્વા - 

hearing those words which were pleasing to the ears.

પ્રહૃષ્ટઃ સુગ્રીવવદનાત્ ચ્યુતં  - 

said from lips of delighted Sugriva 

રામઃ લક્ષ્મણઃ મહાબલઃ ચ - 

Rama and the mighty hero Lakshmana too

ભૃશં પ્રાહૃષ્યત- were very delighted

seeing the delighted young princes who were delighted at the fulfilment of the task

સંહૃષ્ટૈઃ અંગૈઃ બાહ્વોઃ - 

felt a thrill all over his body,

કર્મસિદ્ધિં  આસન્નાં વિદિત્વા - 

realizing that time achieving the task has come.

અતિમાત્રં નનન્દ - was very delighted
