Sarga 63

"దృష్టా దేవీ న సందేహో" means, "Sita has been seen, without a doubt"; and he adds, "Not by anybody else, by Hanuman only"; That is Sugriva's statement.

This speaks volumes about Sugriva's belief in Hanuma. Sugriva reached the conclusion even before Hanuma and others could report after Hanuma's safe return. No conversation about Hanuma's greatness can end, without out quoting this statement of Sugriva. How Sugriva reached that conclusion is the story of this Sarga.

There is another aspect that should be noted. That is about a commitment redeemed.

When this information was conveyed, Rama and Lakshmana were delighted. Looking at the delight of Rama and Lakshmana, which is reflected in their eyes. Sugriva was delighted (ననన్ద 63.27). Valmiki describes that happy scene. ‘The duo of princes was overjoyed. It could be seen in their eyes that expanded in delight. With their object all but met, all their limbs were filled with happiness. The king of Vanaras too was extremely delighted, knowing that the successful end of his mission is within reach. బాహ్వోరాసన్నాం means హస్తప్రాప్తమివ, As though it is within his hands reach!

Sugriva who has committed to take up search for Sita, in return for getting Vanara kingdom, now almost feels like he discharged his responsibility. And so, he is delighted. A commitment has been redeemed. Thus there is happiness shared by all the three in this Sarga. This is also the first occasion, in Sundarakanda, where Rama's, who is always present in the background, is acknowledged as being physically present.

Now we go through the Slokas of Sarga sixty-three.

||Sloka 63.01||

తతో మూర్ధ్నా నిపతితం వానరం వానరర్షభః |

దృష్ట్వైవో ద్విగ్నహృదయో వాక్తమేత దువాచ హ ||63.01||

స|| తతః వానరర్షభః మూర్ధ్నా నిపతితం వానరం దృష్ట్వా ఉద్విగ్న హృదయః ఏతత్  వాక్యం ఉవాచ హ ||

తతః వానరర్షభః - 

then the bull among Vanaras

మూర్ధ్నా నిపతితం వానరం దృష్ట్వా - 

seeing Dadhimukha fallen at his feet

ఉద్విగ్న హృదయః - 

being anxious

ఏతత్ వాక్యం ఉవాచ హ- 

spoke these words

Then the bull among Vanaras, seeing Dadhimukha fallen at his feet, being anxious spoke these words. ||63.01||

ఉత్తిష్టోత్తిష్ఠ కస్మాత్త్వం పాదయోః పతితో మమ |

అభయం తే భవేత్ వీర సర్వ మేవాభిదీయతామ్ ||63.02||

స|| వీర ఉత్తిష్ఠ ఉత్తిష్ఠ కస్మాత్ మమ పాదయోః త్వం పతితః | తే అభయం భవేత్ | సర్వం ఏవ అభిధీయతామ్ ||

వీర ఉత్తిష్ఠ ఉత్తిష్ఠ - 

oh hero, get up, get up

కస్మాత్ మమ పాదయోః త్వం పతితః - 

why are you falling at my feet?

తే అభయం భవేత్ - you have no fear 

సర్వం ఏవ అభిధీయతామ్ - 

everything may be told

"Oh Hero ! Get up, get up. Why are you falling at my feet ? Have no fear .You may tell everything". ||63.02||

||Sloka 63.03||

స తు విశ్వాసితః తేన సుగ్రీవేణ మహాత్మనా |

ఉత్థాయ సుమహాప్రాజ్ఞో వాక్యం దధిముఖోబ్రవీత్ ||63.03||

thus assured by Sugriva

got up and spoke the following words

నైవర్క్ష రజసా రాజన్ న త్వయా నాపి వాలినా |

వనం విసృష్టపూర్వం హి భక్షితం తచ్చ వానరైః ||63.04||

స|| రాజన్ ఋక్షరజసా నైవ  త్వయా న వాలినా అపి వనం విశ్రుష్టపూర్వం తచ్చ వానరైః భక్షితమ్||

Tilaka Tikaa says - నైవ విశ్రుష్టపూర్వం వానరేభ్యో యథేచ్ఛభోగాయ కదాపి న అనుజ్ఞాతమ్

Govindaraja Tika says - గోవిన్దరాజ టీకాలో- న విస్రుష్టపూర్వం యథేచ్ఛభోగాయ న దత్తం

రాజన్ ఋక్షరజసా నైవ -

 o king, neither by Ruksharajasa

త్వయా న వాలినా అపి - 

or even before by you or Vali 

నైవ విశ్రుష్టపూర్వం హి - 

which was not accessible for enjoyment.  

తచ్చ వనం వానరైః భక్షితమ్-

 that grove was  eaten by Vanaras

||Sloka summary||

Oh Rajan ! That grove (Madhuvan)  which is not accessible in the time of Ruksharajasa or even before or in Vali's time or yours , was eaten by Vanaras. ||63.04||

||Sloka 63.05||

ఏభిః ప్రదర్షితాశ్చైవ వానరా వనరక్షిభిః | 

మధూన్యచిన్తయత్వేమాన్ భక్షయంతి పిబంతి చ ||63.05||

స|| ఏభిః వనరక్షిభిః ప్రధర్షితశ్చఏవ ఇమాన్ అచిన్తయిత్వా మధూని భక్ష్యన్తి పిబన్తి చ|| 

Rama Tika says- అచిన్తయిత్వా అపరిగణ్య

||Sloka meanings||

ఏభిః ఇమాన్ వనరక్షిభిః ప్రధర్షితశ్చఏవ - 

though resisted by the guards of the grove

అచిన్తయిత్వా - 

without caring 

మధూని భక్ష్యన్తి పిబన్తి చ- 

they ate honey combs and drank too

"Even though resisted by the guards of the grove, without caring for them, they ate honey combs and drank too. ||63.05||

||Sloka 63.06||

శిష్టమత్రాపవిధ్యంతి భక్షయంతి తథాపరే |

నివార్యమాణాస్తే సర్వే భ్రువౌ వై దర్శయంతి హి ||63.06||

స||  శిష్టం అత్ర అపవిధ్యన్తి | అపరే తథా భక్షయన్తి| తే సర్వే నివార్యమానః భృవః దర్శయన్తి చ||

Tilaka Tika says- భ్రువౌ భృకుటీం వక్రౌ కుర్వన్తి।

Rama Tika says - అపరే భక్షయన్తి శిష్టమవిశిష్టం అపవిధ్యన్తి ప్రక్షిపన్తి చ నివార్యమాణాః సన్తః భ్రుకుటీం దర్శయన్తి చ।

శిష్టం అత్ర అపవిధ్యన్తి - 

left overs were thrown off.

అపరే తథా భక్షయన్తి - 

similarly others were eating

తే సర్వే నివార్యమాణః - 

when they were prevented

భృవః దర్శయన్తి చ - 

they raised their eyebrows

ఇమే హి సంరబ్ధతరాః తథా తైః సంప్రధర్షితాః |

వారయంతో వనాత్ తస్మాత్ క్రుద్ధైర్వానరపుంగవైః ||63.07||

స|| తథా తస్మాత్ వనాత్ వారయన్తః సంరబ్ధతరాః  క్రుద్ధైః తైః వానరపుంగవైః ఇమే సంప్రధర్షితాః ||

Tilaka Tika says - సంరబ్ధతరాః నివారణాయ అతియత్నవన్తః |

Rama Tika says - సంరబ్ధతరాః నివారణఫలక యత్నవన్తః|

తథా తస్మాత్ వనాత్ వారయన్తః - 

when prevented from that grove

సంరబ్ధతరాః క్రుద్ధైః తైః వానరపుంగవైః - 

enraged and angry Vanaras with the ones stopping them 

ఇమే సంప్రధర్షితాః - ill-treated them

'When prevented from that grove, the enraged and angry Vanaras  ill-treated the  ones trying to stop them'. ||63.07||

తతస్తైర్బహుభిర్వీరైః వానరైర్వానరర్షభః |

సంరక్తనయనైః క్రోధాద్దరయః ప్రవిచాలితాః ||63.08||

స|| వానరర్షభ తతః క్రోధాత్ సంరక్తనయనైః వీరైః బహుభిః తైః వానరైః హరయః ప్రవిచాలితః||

Rama tika says- హరయః మదనుయాయీ వానరాః (రక్షకః ఇత్యర్థః)

వానరర్షభ తతః - 

then o bull among Vanaras 

క్రోధాత్ సంరక్తనయనైః వీరైః -

by heroes who were angry and with red eyes,

తైః వానరైః బహుభిః -  

by many of those Vanaras

హరయః ప్రవిచాలితః- 

guards were chased away

'Then many of the heroes who were angry and with red eyes, chased away the guards'.||63.08||

పాణిభిర్నిహతాః కేచిత్ కేచిత్ జానుభిరాహతాః |

ప్రకృష్టాశ్చ యథాకామం దేవమార్గం చ దర్శితాః ||63.09||

కేచిత్ పాణిభిః నిహతాః - some were hit with hands

కేచిత్ జానుభిః ఆహతాః - some were hit by their knees

యథాకామం ప్రకృష్టాః - were dragged as they liked

దేవమార్గం దర్శితాః చ- thrown into the sky

'Some were hit with hands. Some were hit by their knees. Some were dragged as they liked and were thrown threw into the sky.' ||63.09||

ఏవ మేతే హతాః శూరాః త్వయి తిష్ఠతి భర్తరి |

కృత్స్నం మధువనం చైవ ప్రకామం తైః ప్రభక్ష్యతే ||63.10||

స|| త్వయి భర్తరి తిష్ఠతి ఏతే శూరాః ఏవం హతాః | తైః కృత్స్నం మధువనం చైవ ప్రకామం ప్రభక్ష్యతే||

త్వయి భర్తరి తిష్ఠతి - 

even when you are the king

ఏతే శూరాః ఏవం హతాః - 

these heroes were hit in this way

తైః కృత్స్నం మధువనం చ -

they destroyed the Madhuvan 

ఏవ ప్రకామం ప్రభక్ష్యతే - 

devoured the honey as they liked

'When you are the king these heroes were hit in this way. They destroyed the Madhuvan and devoured the honey as they liked'. ||63.10||

ఏవం విజ్ఞాప్యమానం తం సుగ్రీవం వానరర్షభమ్ |

అపృచ్ఛ తం మహాప్రాజ్ఞో లక్ష్మణః పరవీరహ ||63.11||

లక్ష్మణః అపృచ్ఛత్ - 

Lakshmana asked thus

The bull among Vanaras, who was thus being informed, was asked by Lakshmana who is wise, and  who is the killer of enemies. ||63.11||

కిమయం వానరో రాజన్ వనపః ప్రత్యుపస్థితః |

కం చార్థమభినిర్దిశ్య దుఃఖితో వాక్యమబ్రవీత్ ||63.12||

స|| రాజన్ కిం  వనపః అయః వానరః  ప్రత్యుపస్థితః | దుఃఖితః కిం | అర్థమ్ అభినిర్దిస్య వాక్యం అబ్రవీత్ ||

Rama Tika says - కిమితి। హే రాజన్ అయం వనపః కిం కిమర్థం ప్రత్యుపస్థితః । కిమర్థం అభినిర్దిస్య బొధయిత్వా దుఃఖితః సన్ అబ్రవీత్ ।

రాజన్ కిం  వనపః -

 o king why this protector of forest

అయః వానరః  ప్రత్యుపస్థితః- this Vanara is here 

దుఃఖితః కిం అర్థమ్ - why is he sad?

 అభినిర్దిస్య వాక్యం అబ్రవీత్ - 

for what purpose he is telling

'Oh King ! Why is this protector of forest here? Why is he sad. For what purpose he is telling'.||63.12||

ఏవముక్తస్తు సుగ్రీవో లక్ష్మణేన మహాత్మనా |

లక్ష్మణం ప్రత్యువాచేదం వాక్యం వాక్యవిశారదః ||63.13||

 honey has been consumed by Vanaras 

దక్షిణామ్ ఆశాం విచిన్త్య ఆగతైః  - 

who have come after searching in southern direction.

'Oh Venerable one ! Dadhimukha is saying that fruits and honey have been consumed by the Vanara heroes Angada and others, who have come after their search for Sita in the southern direction'. ||63.14||

నైషామకృతకృత్యానాం ఈదృశస్స్యాదుపక్రమః ||63.15||

అగతైశ్చ ప్రమథితం యథా మధువనం హి తైః |

ధర్షితం చ వనం కృత్స్నముపయుక్తం చ వానరైః ||63.16||

స|| ఆగతైః తైః వానరైః మధువనం యథా ప్రమథితం కృత్స్నం వనం ధర్షితం ఉపయుక్తం చ ఏషాం అకృతకృత్యానాం ఈదృశః ఉపక్రమః న స్యాత్ ||

those who have not accomplished their task 

ఈదృశః ఉపక్రమః న స్యాత్ -

వనం యదఽభిపన్నాస్తే సాధితం కర్మవానరైః |

దృష్టా దేవీ న సందేహో న చాన్యేన హనూమతా ||63.17||

స|| తే యదా వనం అభిపన్నాః వానరైః కర్మ సాధితం | దేవీ దృష్టా | న సందేహః న అన్యేన న హనుమతా ||

తే యదా వనం అభిపన్నాః - 

the way they entered the grove

వానరైః కర్మ సాధితం - 

task must have been accomplished by the Vanaras 

దేవీ దృష్టా న సందేహః - 

they have seen the divine lady without any doubt

న అన్యేన న హనుమతా - 

by Hanuman, not any other

'The way they, the Vanaras, entered the grove, they must have accomplished their task.  The divine lady has been seen without any doubt, by Hanuman and no other'. ||63.17||

||Sloka 63.18||

న హ్యన్యః సాధనే హేతుః కర్మణోఽస్య హనూమతః |

కార్యసిద్ధిర్మతిశ్చైవ తస్మిన్వానరపుంగవే ||63.18||

వ్యవసాయశ్చ వీర్యం చ శ్రుతం చాపి ప్రతిష్టితమ్ |

స|| అస్య కర్మనః సాధనే హనూమతః అన్యః హేతుః న హి కార్యసిద్ధిః మతిశ్చైవ వ్యవసాయశ్చ వీర్యం చ  శ్రుతం చాపి తస్మిన్ వానరపుంగవే ప్రతిష్ఠితామ్ ||

అస్య కర్మణః సాధనే  - 

for achieving this task Hanuman

అన్యః హేతుః న హి - 

not possible for others 

హనూమతః కార్యసిద్ధిః మతిశ్చైవ - 

Hanuman has the capacity to accomplish the task, the wisdom

వ్యవసాయశ్చ వీర్యం చ  శ్రుతం చాపి - 

the effort, the strength and the knowledge of scriptures 

తస్మిన్ వానరపుంగవే ప్రతిష్ఠితామ్ - 

are all well established in him the best of Vanaras '

In achieving this task only Hanuman has the ability because the capacity to accomplish the task, the wisdom , the effort, the strength and the enthusiasm ( to accomplish the task ) are all well established in him'.||63.18||

జాంబవాన్యత్ర నేతాస్యాదంగదశ్చ మహాబలః ||63.19|| 

హనుమాంశ్చాప్యధిష్ఠాతా న తస్య గతి రన్యథా |

స|| యత్ర జామ్బవాన్ నేతా స్యాత్ మహాబలః అంగదస్య చ హనుమాంశ్చ అధితిష్ఠతా తస్య గతిః అన్యథా న||

యత్ర జామ్బవాన్ నేతా స్యాత్ - 

where Jambavan is the leader

మహాబలః అంగదస్య చ - 

mighty Angada and

హనుమాంశ్చ అధితిష్ఠతా - 

Hanuman are directing

తస్య గతిః అన్యథా న - 

there the result has to be this only not otherwise.

'Where Jambavan is the leader, where the mighty Angada and Hanuman are directing, there the result has to be this only not otherwise.' ||63.19||

అంగదప్రముఖైర్వీరైః హతం మధువనం కిల ||63.20||

వారయంతశ్చ సహితాః తథా జానుభిరాహతాః |

స|| అంగదప్రముఖైః వీరైః మధువనం హతం కిల|  సహితాః వారయన్తశ్చ తదా జానుభిః ఆహతాః||

' Oh Mighty Saumitra ! Sita has been truly seen. See all the Vanaras having arrived drank honey ! ||63.22||

న చాప్యదృష్ట్వా వైదేహీం విశ్రుతాః పురుషర్షభ ||63.23||

వనం దత్తవరం  దివ్యం ధర్షయేయుర్వనౌకసః |

స|| తతః సహ రాఘవః ధర్మాత్మా లక్ష్మణః ప్రహృష్టః సుగ్రీవవదనాత్ చ్యుతం కర్ణసుఖాం వాణీం శ్రుత్వా  ప్రాహృష్యత| రామః లక్ష్మణః మహాబలః చ భృశం ప్రాహృష్యత ||

తతః సహ రాఘవః ధర్మాత్మా లక్ష్మణః- 

then along with Rama righteous Lakshmana

ప్రాహృష్యత  - were delighted 

 కర్ణసుఖాం వాణీం శ్రుత్వా - 

hearing those words which were pleasing to the ears.

ప్రహృష్టః సుగ్రీవవదనాత్ చ్యుతం  - 

said from lips of delighted Sugriva

seeing the delighted young princes who were delighted at the fulfilment of the task

సంహృష్టైః అంగైః బాహ్వోః - 

felt a thrill all over his body,

కర్మసిద్ధిం  ఆసన్నాం విదిత్వా - 

realizing that time achieving the task has come.

అతిమాత్రం ననన్ద - was very delighted
