Vedanta is an enquiry:

The main topics of Vedanta are

• Tatva ( Reality)

• Hita ( means of realization)

• Purushartha ( ultimate Goal)

Reality or Tatva is divided into two

• Para ( the ultimate ) or Paramatman

• Apara that what is dependent on the ultimate reality ;

This Apara is divided into two

• Individual souls that have consciousness ( Jeevatman)

• Material entities which have no consciousness ( material universe – Jagat) )

Thus the three realities the Vedanta talks about are

- Paramatman

- Jeevatma

- Jagat

Now we come to the Vedantic Enquiry. The nature of the relation between the three namely Paramatma, Jeevatma and the universe is the Vedantic enquiry.

Specifically

• The first and foremost enquiry is to know the relationship between Paramatma ( ultimate Realty) and Jeevatma ( the individual soul)

• The next enquiry is about the relationship between Paramatma, the individual soul and the body embodying the individual

• The third enquiry is about the individual soul and the material world ( Jagat)

In this all the three Paramatman , Jeeva ( individual) and jagat ( universe) are considered real – with the trio of Vedas , Brahma sutras and Bhagavad-Gita considered as sources .

Vedas have Bheda sruti bringing out the difference between Jeevatma and Paramatma, Abhedasruti bringing out the non-difference of Paramatma and Jeevatma and also the conciliatory statements which try to bridge the difference.

This three fold enquiry resulted in seemingly startling conclusions covering a range of views from the unequivocal Advaita which is Unitary and says there is only One Reality not three (Paramatman, you and Jagat all in one !), the Dvaita which recognizes two separate entities Paramatma and Jeevatma , and then there is Vishishtadvaita a qualified Unitary philosophy .

There is a Saiva system recognizing all the three ( Pati Pasu and Pasa) as inevitable three realities.

All of them base their arguments on the same Vedas.

The Sankara's defense of Advaita left even the western scholars staggered at the sweep of his arguments affirming a single reality that is the human being itself. Sankara has used the Vedas, Brahma Sutras and Bhagavad-Gita to fully establish the point of unitary soul (Advaita) in that sense the Vedas and philosophy affirmed by Sankara is secular.

The Purna prajna basing its philosophy on “Hari” alone (hari sharanam) as the center piece, Saivism basing its philosophy on Siva, Vishidtadvaita keeping the Paramatma and Jeevaatma virtually separate are probably easier to understand and assimilate.

The reference to the difficult river , in the story of Dasamanyaaya , is a very apt analogy and for that reason alone vedas and Vedantists talk hoarse about the step by step process for reaching the level of Sankara's Advaita.

So that is about the lines of … Vedantic Enquiry..

And this is not left as a metaphysical enquiry; the enquiry got embedded into the epics Ramayana and Mahabharata. The Upanishads talk about the same through subtle stories like the dialog between Yama and Nachiketa in Kathopanishad etc

This week we move on to chapter 88 from Chapter 86 of dasama Skandha. We are skipping Chapter 87 which is titled "Song of Vedas". Chapter 87 is involved with complex layered explanations unlike the rest of eighty nine chapters of Dasama Skandha which are pure stories, albeit delightful stories. But We will come back to chapter87 "Song of Vedas" later. The three remaining chapters namely 88 , 89 and 90 are respectively about - Vishnu and Siva ( chapter 88) , Brahma, Vishnu and Siva ( Chapter 89) and "Krishna - The only one"( chapter 90). Some how the chapter seem appropriately titled leading up to the title of the last chapter as "Krishna - the only one" !. Naturally the Dasama Skandha is about Krishna Only - and it must end with a statement which is - "Krishna only" !!!

Chapter 88 is about Siva and Vishnu. The King Parikshit always seem to ask those provocative questions which we want to ask. This time the question is about Siva and Vishnu and how Sivas Bhaktas seem to get what ever they want that too very easily. In response the story of Vritasurais told. Most of us again would have heard this as a story of Bhasmasura or how Siva got rescued by Vishnu who came in theform of Mohini !! and thestory is presented as Mohini-Bhasmasura". This is the same story but the Rakshasa is called Vrikasura and when Siva is to be rescued Vishnu appears as Brahmacharin. That is the only variation from what we might have read in our childhood . Incidentally this story is titled "Rudra Moksham" in Bhagavatam . With such a title no wonder the Saivites and Vaishnavites will always be at logger heads !!

We have also revisited and earlier article now updated - "Hitam manohari cha durlabham Vachah" which translatesto saying it is difficult say nice things and good things at the same time - some times .

We have completed the Role models from Ramayana which brought out articles on Srirama , Sita , Hanuman , Jataayu , Sabari , Bharata , Lakshmana. Apart from these there were some special articles namely The Message of Ramayana , Going to the Forests and about Hanuman in "In the thick of the Battle " . Along the same lines are the earlier articles in praise of Hunuman 1 , Hanuman 2 and Valmiki Sundarakanda . This completes a bouquet of articles on Ramayana with the first seven articles as above contributed by Tuaraga. Our thanks are to Mr Turaga for always being ahead of the time lines in presenting these articles!!!. Added to this bouquet is the Sundarakanda as a Telugu poem by Pandit Vijayraghavrao. We have also added some downloads specifically for the Sankshipta Sundarakanda ( with Sanskrit slokas) reproduced in different language scripts namely Sanskrit , Telugu , Kannada and Malayalam . The story of Dasamanyaya talked about the ten men trying to cross a tumultuous swift flowing swirling river . That is a symbolic reference to the vedantic search . This issue also carries an elaboration on what is the Vedantic enquiry about. Vedantic enquiry is about the nature of relationship between Paramatma(the ultimate being) , Jeevaatma and Jagat ( universe). The various schools of Advaita ( only one with no second), Dvaita ( the two) , Vishishtadvaita are all based on the trio of Vedas , Brahma sutras and Bhagavadgita.

Durlabham Vachah: Revisited

A good advice and pleasing speech may not go together !!

What kind of a friend is he who cannot give a good advice !!

What kind of leader is he who cannot hear a piece of good advice !!.

A good adviser is one who will not tell a lie to please !!

These are part of a dialog in Bharavi's Kiratarjuniyam .

Bharavi is one of the foremost Poets in Sanskrit after Kalidasa. The Kiratarjuniyam consist of many more such gems .

Kiratarjuniyam starts with the spy deployed by Pandavas briefing Dharmaraja aboutthe activities of the Duryodhana as the King. Bharavi uses this dialog to drive home some truths that are invariably missed by leaders. That Bharavi stated them is a proof of the existence of contrary behavior eveningthose days.

In any case the Vanechara , or the forester who acted as spy said in so many simple words -" I am your employee . It is my duty to tell you the truth . The truth may be pleasant or unpleasant . In either case I need to be forgiven because it is my duty to tell you the truth even if it hurts

" .

The Forester is more loud . he adds the second and third lines .

He says what kind of a friend is he who does not tell the difficult truth and what kind of master is he who does not have the patience or the willingness hear the truth ".

He adds a punch line saying a good adviser is the one who will not tell a lie to please

Real life may not be that simple

We comes across choices where a line of action is proposed which is our own view and which also we know may be the line pleasing to the boss in question , but which may not be correct .

But we will present it anyway in our own way , because we are in love with our line.!!

If there is a line to be read and interpreted we continue to read in our own way even if it is the wrong way. The forester is emphatically saying that it is his duty to explain fully what he knows . His duty is not to become a protagonist but be able to tell fully so that decision is taken on all facts.

In the original Mahabharata Story there is no such episode of a spy telling about the events in Duryodhana's kingdom.

It is a creation of Bharavi . Which also means that by the time of Bharavi, the politics have developed into an art form. Apparently there were bosses who would shoot messengers hence the poet made a point to make the forester - the employee - say the home truths to his Boss .

That Bharavi wrote in those days means that this kind of management problems emnated from that time .

The management Schools available were only the Intellectuals or those Poets writing loudly to bring it to the notice of all !!!
