સુન્દરકાંડ.
અથ અષ્ટચત્ત્વારિંશસ્સર્ગઃ||

તતસ્સરક્ષોઽધિપતિર્મહાત્મા
હનૂમતાક્ષે નિહતે કુમારે|
મનઃ સમાધાય સદેવકલ્પં
સમાદિદેશેંદ્રજિતં સરોષમ્||1||

સ|| તતઃ રક્ષોઽધિપતિઃ મહાત્મા હનુમતા કુમારે અક્ષે નિહતે મનઃ સમાધાય સરોષં દેવકલ્પં ઇંદ્રજિતં સમાદિદેશ ||

Angry because of prince Aksha being killed by great Hanuman ,the king of Rakshasas controlling his mind then ordered Indrajit who is like a god.

ત્વમસ્ત્રવિચ્છસ્ત્રવિદાં વરિષ્ઠઃ સુરાસુરાણામપિ શોકદાતા|
સુરેષુસેંદ્રેષુ ચ દૃષ્ટકર્મા પિતામહારાધનસંચિતાસ્ત્રઃ||2||

સ||ત્વં અસ્ત્રવિત્ શસ્ત્રવિદાં વરિષ્ઠઃ | સુરાણાં અસુરાણાં અપિ શોક દાતા| સ ઇંદ્રેષુ સુરેષુ દૃષ્ટકર્મા | પિતામહારાધન સંચિતાસ્ત્રઃ||

'You are knower of weapons and the best among the knowers of weapons too. You brought grief to Suras and Asuras. A warrior of proven ability among gods including Indra, you have acquired many weapons by propitiating Brahma'.

તવાસ્ત્રબલમાસાદ્ય નાસુરા ન મરુદ્ગણાઃ|
ન શેકુઃ સમરેસ્થાતું સુરેશ્વર સમાશ્રિતાઃ||3||
નકશ્ચિત્ ત્રિષુ લોકેષુ સંયુગે ન ગતશ્રમઃ|
ભુજવીર્યગુપ્તશ્ચ તપસા ચાભિરક્ષિતઃ|
દેશકાલવિભાગજ્ઞઃ ત્વમેવ મતિસત્તમઃ||4||

સ|| તવ અસ્ત્રબલં આસાદ્ય ન અસુરા ન મરુદ્ગણાઃ ન સુરેશ્વરઃ સમાશ્રિતાઃ સમરે સ્થાતું શેકુઃ ||સંયુગેન ગતશ્રમઃ કશ્ચિત્ ત્રિષુ લોકેષુ ન | ત્વમેવ મતિસત્તમઃ ભુજવીર્યાભિગુપ્તશ્ચ તપસા અભિરક્ષિતઃ દેવકાલવિભાગજ્ઞઃ||

'Because of the strength of Astras you acquired, Asuras or Maruts including Indra cannot stand in front of you in a battle. There is none who has not experienced fatigue in the war in the three worlds. You are the most intelligent, protected by the strength of your own shoulders, protected with the power of penance. You are aware of proper place and time of action'.

નતેઽસ્ત્વશક્યં સમરેષુ કર્મણા ન તેઽસ્ત્યકાર્યં મતિપૂર્વ મંત્રણે|
નસોsસ્તિ કશ્ચિત્ ત્રિષુ સંગ્રહેષુ વૈ ન વેદ યસ્તેઽસ્ત્રબલં બલં ચ તે||5||
મમાનુરૂપં તપસો બલં ચ તે પરાક્રમશ્ચાસ્ત્રબલં ચ સંયુગે|
ન ત્વાં સમાસાદ્ય રણાવમર્દે મનઃ શ્રમં ગચ્ચતિ નિશ્ચિતાર્થમ્||6||

સ|| સમરેષુ કર્મણા તે અશક્યં નાસ્તિ| મતિપૂર્વમંત્રેણ તે અકાર્યં નાસ્તિ| ત્રિષુ સંગ્રહેષુ યઃ તે અસ્ત્રબલં તે બલં ચ ન વેદ સઃ કશ્ચિત્ નાસ્તિ||તે તપસઃ બલં મમ અનુરૂપં સંયુગે પરાક્રમશ્ચ બલં ચ | રણાવમર્થે ત્વાં સમાસાદ્ય મનઃ નિશ્ચિતાર્થં શ્રમમ્ ન ગચ્છતિ||

'There is nothing not possible for you in war. With wise counsel there is no impossible act. In the three worlds there is none who does not know the strength of your weapons and your power to recall a weapon you have discharged. Your power of penance is equal to mine. So are your valor and ability to discharge weapons in war. With you engaged in battle , my mind does not worry about the result'.

નિહતાઃ કિંકરાઃ સર્વે જંબુમાલીચ રાક્ષસઃ||7||
અમાત્યપુત્ત્રા વીરાશ્ચ પંચસેનાગ્રયાયિનઃ|
બલાનિ સુસમૃદ્ધાનિ સાશ્વનાગરથાનિચ||8||
સહોદરઃ તે દયિતઃ કુમારોઽક્ષશ્ચ સૂદિતઃ|
ન હિ તેષ્વેવ મે સારો યસ્ત્વય્યરિનિષૂદન||9||

સ|| કિંકરાઃ તથૈવ જંબુમાલી ચ અમાત્યપુત્રાશ્ચ વીરાઃ ચ પંચસેનાગ્રયાયિનઃ બલાનિ સુસમૃદ્ધાનિ સ અશ્વનાગરથાનિ ચ સર્વે નિહતાઃ ||તે સહોદરઃ દયિતઃ કુમારઃ અક્ષઃ ચ સૂદિતઃ | અરિનિષૂદન મે ત્વયિ સારઃ તેષ્વેવ ન હિ||

'Kinkaras similarly Jambumali, as well as the ministers sons, and the five generals too are killed along with forces fully provided with horses, elephants, and chariots .Your dear brother prince Aksha too is killed. Oh Scourge of enemies I have real faith in you not them'.

ઇદં હિ દૃષ્ટ્વા મતિમન્મહદ્બલમ્ કપેઃ પ્રભાવં ચ પરાક્રમં ચ|
ત્વમાત્મનશ્ચાપિ સમીક્ષ્ય સારં કુરુષ્વ વેગં સ્વબલાનુરૂપમ્||10||
બલાવમર્દસ્ત્વયિ સન્નિકૃષ્ટે યથાગતે શામ્યતિ શાંતશત્રૌ|
તથા સમીક્ષ્યાત્મબલં પરં ચ સમારભસ્વ અસ્ત્રવિદાં વરિષ્ઠ ||11||

સ|| મતિમન્ ત્વં કપેઃ ઇદં મહત્ બલં પ્રભાવં ચ પરાક્રમં ચ આત્મનઃ સારં ચાપિ સમીક્ષ્ય સ્વબલાનુરૂપં વેગં કુરુષ્વ||અસ્ત્રવિદાં વરિષ્ઠ ત્વયિ સન્નિકૃષ્ટે શાંતશત્રૌ ગતે બલાવમર્થઃ યથા શામ્યતિ તથા આત્મબલં પરં ચ સમીક્ષ્ય સમારભસ્વ||

'Oh Intelligent one, the great strength, power and valor of the Vanara is to be observed along with your own strength carefully. Act according to your own strength only. Oh Best among the experts in archery, going there and judging the strength, then approach the enemy and start the battle in a manner that he does not cause further destruction'.

ન વીર સેના ગણશોચ્યવંતિ ન વજ્ર માદાય વિશાલ્પસારમ્|
ન મારુતસ્યાસ્ય ગતેઃ પ્રમાણમ્ ન ચાગ્નિકલ્પઃ કરણેન હંતુમ્||12||
તમેવ મર્થં પ્રસમીક્ષ્ય સમ્યક્ સ્વકર્મસામ્યાદ્ધિ સમાહિતાત્મા|
સ્મરં શ્ચ દિવ્યં ધનુષોઽસ્ત્રવીર્યમ્ પ્રજાક્ષતં કર્મ સમારભસ્વ||13||

સ|| વીર ગણશઃ સેનાઃ ચ્યવંતિ ન | વિશાલસારં વ્રજં આદાય ન | અસ્ય ગતેઃ મારુતસ્ય| ન પ્રમાણં અગ્નિકલ્પઃ કરણેન હન્તું ન||તં એવં અર્થં સમ્યક્ પ્રસમીક્ષ્ય સ્વકર્મ સામ્યાત્ સમાહિતાત્મા ધનુષઃ દિવ્યં અસ્ત્રવીર્યં સ્મરં ચ વ્રજ કર્મ અક્ષતાં સમરભસ્વ||

'Oh hero, large armies need not go. With him having extraordinary vigor the bringing thunderbolt is no use. His speed is that of Maruti. He is like sacrificial fire which cannot be destroyed with any weapon. In that way assess the situation properly. Being a person of good judgement with single minded attention, recollecting the divine weapons with the bow move forward. Start the act without being destroyed in the middle'.

ન ખલ્વિયં મતિઃ શ્રેષ્ઠા યત્ત્વાં સંપ્રેષયામ્યહમ્|
ઇયં ચ રાજધર્માણાં ક્ષત્રસ્ય ચ મતિર્મતા||14||
નાનાશસ્ત્રૈશ્ચ સંગ્રામે વૈશારદ્યમરિંદમ|
અવશ્ય મેવ યોદ્ધવ્યં કામ્યશ્ચ વિજયો રણે||15|

સ|| અહં ત્વાં સમ્પ્રેષયામિ ઇતિ યત્ ઇયં મતિઃ શ્રેષ્ઠા ન ખલુ | ઇયં રાજધર્મણાં ક્ષત્રિયસ્ય મતિઃ મતા||અરિંદમ સંગ્રામે નાનાશસ્ત્રેષુ વૈશારદ્યં અવશ્યમેવ બોદ્ધવ્યં | રણે વિજયશ્ચ કામ્યઃ | |

'I think sending you to battle in this way is not good. (However) This is in accordance with the statecraft and the duty of Kshatriyas. Hence this is approved. Oh crusher of the enemies, in the war ultimately efficient use of many weapons is to be known. Victory in the war is wished for' .

તતઃ પિતુસ્તદ્વચનં નિશમ્ય પ્રદક્ષિણં દક્ષસુત પ્રભાવઃ|
ચકાર ભર્તાર મદીનસત્ત્વો રણાય વીરઃ પ્રતિપન્નબુદ્ધિઃ||16||
તત સ્તૈઃ સ્વગણૈરિષ્ટૈરિંદ્રજિત્ પ્રતિપૂજિતઃ|
યુદ્દોદ્દતઃ કૃતોત્સાહઃ સંગ્રામં પ્રત્યપદ્યત ||17||
શ્રીમાન્પદ્મપલાશાક્ષો રાક્ષસાધિપતેઃ સુતઃ|
નિર્જગામ મહાતેજાઃ સમુદ્ર ઇવ પર્વસુ||18||

સ|| તતઃ દક્ષસુતપ્રભાવઃ વીરઃ પિતુઃ તત્ વચનં નિશમ્ય અદીનસત્ત્વઃ રણાય પ્રતિપન્નબુદ્ધિઃ ભર્તારં પ્રદક્ષિણં ચકાર || તતઃ યુદ્ધોદ્ધતઃ ઇંદ્રજિત્ ઇષ્ટૈઃ તૈઃ સ્વગણૈઃ પ્રતિપૂજિતઃ કૃતોત્સાહઃ સંગ્રામં પ્રતિપદ્યત ||શ્રીમાન્ પદ્મપલાશાક્ષઃ મહાતેજાઃ રાક્ષસાધિપતેઃ સુતઃ પર્વસુ સમુદ્રઃ ઇવ નિર્જગામ||

Then the hero, powerful like the son of Daksha, who is never distressed in war, hearing those words of his father prepared in his mind went round his father with due respect. Then he rushed forth for the war with renewed vigor after being honored by his own people. The illustrious son of the Rakshasa, with eyes like the lotus petals, moved ahead like the ocean on a full moon day.

સ પક્ષિરાજોપમતુલ્યવેગૈઃ વ્યાળૈશ્ચતુર્ભિઃ સિતતીક્ષ્ણદંષ્ટ્રૈઃ|
રથં સમાયુક્ત મસંગવેગં સમારુરોહેંદ્રિજિદિંદ્ર કલ્પઃ||19||
સ રથી ધન્વિનાં શ્રેષ્ઠઃ શસ્ત્રજ્ઞોઽસ્ત્રવિદાં વરઃ|
રથેનાભિયયૌ ક્ષિપ્રં હનુમાન્યત્ર સોsભવત્||20||

સ|| ઇંદ્રકલ્પઃ સઃ ઇંદ્રજિત્ પક્ષિરાજ ઉપમ તુલ્યવગૈઃ સિતતીક્ષ્ણદંષ્ટ્રૈઃ ચતુર્ભિઃ વ્યાઘૈઃ સમાયુક્તં અસહયવેગં રથં સમારુરોહ||રથી ધન્વિનાં શ્રેષ્ઠઃ શસ્ત્રજ્ઞઃ અસ્ત્રવિદાં વરઃ રથેન ક્ષિપ્રં રથેન યત્ર હનુમાન્ અભવત્ શીઘ્રં અભિયયૌ ||

Like Indra, Indrajit ascended the chariot drawn by four tigers with sharp teeth, capable of moving with the speed of the king of birds. The charioteer, best among the wielders of bows, best among the knowers of weapons, quickly went on his chariot to the place where Hanuman is waiting.

સ તસ્ય રથ નિર્ઘોષં જ્યાસ્વનં કાર્મુકસ્ય ચ|
નિશમ્ય હરિવીરોઽસૌ સંપ્રહૃષ્ટતરોઽભવત્||21||
સુમહચ્ચાપમાદાય શિતશલ્યાંશ્ચ સાયકાન્|
હનુંમંત મભિપ્રેત્ય જગામ રણપંડિતઃ||22||

સ|| સઃ અસૌ હરિવીરઃ તસ્ય રથ નિર્ઘોષં જ્યાસ્વનં કાર્મુકસ્ય ચ નિશમ્ય સંપ્રહૃષ્ઠતરઃ અભવત્ ||રણપંડિતઃ સુમહત્ ચાપં શિતશલ્યાન્ સાયકાન્ આદાય હનુમંતમ્ અભિપ્રેત્ય જગામ||

Hearing the sounds of the chariot, sounds of the bow being pulled, the leader of Vanaras also became happy. Adept in war, (he) went ahead with the highly powerful bow and sharp edged arrows aiming at Hanuman.

તસ્મિંસ્તતઃ સંયતિ જાતહર્ષે રણાય નિર્ગચ્છતિ બાણપાણૌ|
દિશશ્ચ સર્વાઃ કલુષાબભૂવુઃ મૃગાશ્ચ રૌદ્રા બહુદા વિનેતુઃ||23||
સમાગતાઃ તત્ર તુ નાગયક્ષા મહર્ષયશ્ચક્રચરાશ્ચ સિદ્ધાઃ|
નભઃ સમાવૃત્ય ચ પક્ષિ સંઘા વિનેદુરુચ્ચૈઃ પરમ પ્રહૃષ્ટાઃ||24||

સ|| તતઃ સમ્યતિ જાતહર્ષેઃ તસ્મિન્ ચાપાણૌ રણાય નિર્ગચ્છતિ સર્વાઃ દિશઃ કલુષાઃ બભૂવુઃ | રૌદ્રાઃ મૃગાશ્ચ બહુધા વિનેદુઃ||તત્ર સમાગતાઃ નાગયક્ષાઃ ચક્રચરાઃ મહર્ષયઃ સિદ્ધાઃ ચ નભઃ સમાવૃત્ય પરમ પ્રહૃષ્ટાઃ |પક્ષિ સંઘાશ્ચ ઉચ્ચૈઃ વિનેદુઃ||

Then as he went forth for war feeling happy with bow in hand, all the quarters became dark. Fierce animals began to howl in many ways. There Nagas Yakshas , those who are travelers of that path, the sages, Siddhas assembled in the sky very happily. Flocks of birds screeched too.

આયાંતં સ રથં તૂર્ણમિંદ્રજિતં કપિઃ|
નિનનાદમહાનાદં વ્યવર્થત ચ વેગવાન્||25||
ઇંદ્રજિત્તુ રથં દિવ્યમાસ્થિતઃ ચિત્રકાર્મુકઃ|
ધનુર્વિષ્ફારયામાસ તટિદૂર્જિતનિસ્સ્વનમ્||26||
તતઃ સમેતાવતિ તીક્ષ્ણવેગૌ મહાબલૌ તૌ રણનિર્વિશંકૌ|
કપિશ્ચ રક્ષોધિ પતેશ્ચ પુત્ત્રઃ સુરાસુરેંદ્રાવિવ બદ્ધવૈરૌ||27||

સ|| કપિઃ તૂર્ણમ્ આયાંતં સરથં ઇંદ્રજિતં દૃષ્ટ્વા મહાનાદં વિનનાદ| વેગવાન્ વ્યવર્ધત ચ||ઇંદ્રજિત્ તુ દિવ્યં રથં આસ્થિતઃ ચિત્રકાર્મુકઃ તટિદૂર્જિતનિઃસ્વનમ્ ધનુઃ વિષ્ફારયામાસ||તતઃ અતિતીક્ષ્ણવેગૌ મહાબલૌ રણનિર્વિશંકૌ તૌ કપિઃ ચ રક્ષોધિપતેઃ તનુશ્ચ બદ્ધવૈરૌ સુરાસુરેંદ્રાવિવ સમેતૌ||

Seeing the chariot approaching swiftly , Vanara made a big sound. and quickly enlarged his body. Indrajit also sitting in his divine chariot holding the wonderful bow, pulled the string with lightning speed. The Vanara and the son of the king of Rakshasas , both very fast in speed, mighty , both fearless in war and inimical to each other like Suras and Asuras, then faced each other.

સ તસ્ય વીરસ્ય મહારથસ્ય ધનુષ્મતઃ સંયતિ સમ્મતસ્ય|
શર પ્રવેગં વ્યહનત્પ્રવૃદ્ધઃ ચચાર માર્ગે પિતુરપ્રમેયે||28||
તતઃ શરાનાયતતી‍ક્ષ્ણશલ્યાન્ સુપત્રિણઃ કાંચન ચિત્ર પુંખાન્|
મુમોચ વીરઃ પરવીરહંતા સુસન્નતાન્ વજ્રનિપાતવેગાન્ ||29||
તતસ્તુ તત્ સ્વ્યંદનનિસ્સ્વનં ચ મૃદંગભેરીપટહાસ્વનંચ|
નિકૃષ્યમાણસ્ય ચ કાર્મુકસ્ય નિશમ્ય ઘોષં પુનરુત્પ્રપાત||30||

સ|| અપ્રમેયઃ સઃ પ્રવૃદ્ધઃ મહારથસ્ય ધનુષ્મતઃ સંયતિ સમ્મતસ્ય તસ્ય વીરસ્ય શરપ્રવેગં વ્યહનત્ | પિતુઃ માર્ગે ચચાર||તતઃ પરવીરહંતા વીરઃ આયતતીક્ષ્ણશલ્યાન્ સુપત્રિણઃ કાંચન ચિત્રપુંખાન્ સુસન્નતાન્ વજ્રનિપાતવેગાન્ શરાન્ મુમોચ|| તતઃ સઃ તસ્ય તત્ સ્યંદનનિઃસ્વનં ચ મૃદંગભેરીપટહસ્વનં ચ વિકૃષ્યમાનસ્ય કાર્મુકસ્ય ઘોષં નિશમ્ય પુનઃ ઉત્પપાત||

Hanuman of immeasurable strength, having grown in form, made the speedy shower of arrows in the war from the bow of the great charioteer futile as he escaped moving about in the sky, the path of his father. Then the slayer of enemy warriors, discharged long and sharp pointed arrows with feathers and with gold tips which are slightly bent at the tips, which were touching the bow string, which had the speed of lightning. Then he ( Hanuman) hearing the sound of the bow being drawn, the rumbling of the chariot, beating of the Mridangams Bheris and Patahas, and again rose up.

શરણામંતરેષ્વાશુ વ્યવર્તત મહાકપિઃ|
હરિઃ તસ્યાભિલક્ષ્યસ્ય મોઘયન્ લક્ષ્ય સંગ્રહમ્||31||
શરણામગ્રતસ્તસ્ય પુનસ્સમભિવર્તત
પ્રસાર્ય હસ્તૌ હનુમાન્ ઉત્પપાતાનિલાત્મજઃ||32||
તા વુભૌ વેગસંપન્નૌ રણકર્મ વિશારદૌ|
સર્વભૂતમનોગ્રાહિ ચક્રતુર્યુદ્ધ મુત્તમમ્||33||

સ|| મહાકપિઃ હરિઃ આશુ અભિલક્ષસ્ય તસ્ય લક્ષ્યસંગ્રહં મોઘયન્ શરાણાં અંતરેષુ વ્યવર્તત||અનિલાત્મજઃ હનુમાન્ તસ્ય શરાણાં અગ્રતઃ સમભિવર્તત હસ્તૌ પ્રસાર્ય ઉત્પપાત||તા વુભૌ રણકર્મ વિશારદૌ વેગસંપન્નૌ સર્વભૂતમનોગ્રાહિ ઉત્તમં યુદ્ધં ચક્રતુઃ||

The great Vanara made the arrows being aimed at the target futile, by moving in the space between the arrows. The son of wind god Hanuman moving ahead of the arrows with hands and legs outstretched, jumped. Both endowed with speed and both experts in warfare fighting a great war, captivated the minds of all creatures.

હનૂમતો ન વેદ રાક્ષસોઽન્તરમ્ નમારુતિઃ તસ્ય મહાત્મનોઽન્તરમ્ |
પરસ્પરં નિર્વિષહૌ બભૂવતુઃ સમેત્ય તૌ દેવસમાનવિક્રમૌ||34||
તતસ્તુ લક્ષ્યે સ વિહન્યમાને શરેષ્વમોઘેષુ ચ સંપતત્સુ|
જગામ ચિંતાં મહતીં મહાત્મા સમાધિ સંયોગ સમાહિતાત્મા||35||
તતો મતિં રાક્ષસરાજસૂનુશ્ચકાર તસ્મિન્ હરિવીરમુખ્યે|
અવધ્યતાં તસ્ય કપેઃ સમીક્ષ્ય કથં નિગચ્છેદિતિ નિગ્રહાર્થમ્||36||

સ|| રાક્ષસઃ હનૂમતઃ અન્તરં ન વેદ | મારુતિઃ મહાત્મનઃ તસ્ય ન | દેવસમાનવિક્રમૌ તૌ સમેત્ય પરસ્પરં નિર્વિષહૌ બભૂવતુઃ || તતઃ લક્ષ્યે વિહન્યમાને અમોઘેષુ શરેષુ સંપતત્સુ મહાત્મા સમાધિસંયોગસમાહિતાત્મા સઃ મહતીં ચિંતં જગામ||તતઃ રાક્ષસરાજસૂનઃ તસ્ય કપેઃ અવધ્યતાં સમીક્ષ્ય નિગ્રહાર્થં કથં નિગચ્છેત્ ઇતિ તસ્મિન્ હરિપ્રવીરમુખ્યે મતિં ચકાર||

The Rakshasa did not find a way to hit Hanuman. Maruti did not find one too. Both being equal to Devas in war were unable to bear each other. Indrajit's infallible arrows missed Hanuman. The great warrior became perplexed and started thinking seriously within himself. Then the son of the king of Rakshasa, thinking that the Vanara cannot be killed, thought in his mind about how the Vanara may be captured.

તતઃ પૈતામહં વીર સ્સઽસ્ત્રમસ્ત્રવિદાં વરઃ|
સંદધે સુમહાતેજાઃ તં હરિપ્રવરં પ્રતિ||37||
અવધ્યોઽયમિતિ જ્ઞાત્વા તમસ્ત્રેણાસ્ત્રતત્ત્વવિત્|
નિજગ્રાહ મહાબાહુઃ મારુતાત્મજમિંદ્રજિત્||38||
તેન બદ્ધસ્તતોઽસ્ત્રેણ રાક્ષસેન સ વાનરઃ|
અભવન્નિર્વિચેષ્ટશ્ચ પપાત ચ મહીતલે||39||

સ|| તતઃ વીરઃ અસ્ત્રવિદાં વરઃ સુમહાતેજાઃ સઃ હરિપ્રવીરં પ્રતિ પૈતામાહં અસ્ત્રં સંદધે||અસ્ત્રતત્વવિત્ મહાબાહુઃ ઇંદ્રજિત્ અવધ્યઃ ઇતિ જ્ઞાત્વા તં મારુતાત્મજં અસ્ત્રેણ નિજગ્રાહ||તતઃ તેન રાક્ષસેન અસ્ત્રેણ બદ્ધઃ સઃ વાનરઃ નિર્વિચેષ્ટઃ અભવત્ | સઃ મહીતલે પપાત||

Then the hero, best among those knowledgeable of weapons, invoked the grandfather Brahma's weapon at the foremost of Vanaras. That expert in weapons, the long armed Indrajit knowing that he cannot be killed bound the son of wind god with that weapon. Thus bound by that weapon, the Vanara was unable to move. He fell down on the ground.

તતોઽથ બુદ્ધ્વા સ તદાસ્ત્રબંધં પ્રભોઃ પ્રભાવાત્ વિગતાત્મવેગઃ|
પિતામહાનુગ્રહમાત્મનશ્ચ વિચિંતયામાસ હરિપ્રવીરઃ ||40||
તતઃ સ્વાયંભુવૈર્મંત્રૈઃ બ્રહ્માસ્ત્રમભિમંત્રિતમ્|
હનુમાંશ્ચિંતયામાસ વરદાનં પિતામહત્||41||

સ|| તતઃ અથ સઃ હરિપ્રવીરઃ તત્ અસ્ત્રબંધં બુદ્ધ્વા પ્રભોઃ વિગતાત્મ વેગઃ આત્મનઃ પિતમહાનુગ્રહં વિચિંતયામાસ||તતઃ હનુમાન્ સ્વાયંભુવૈઃ મંત્રૈઃ અભિમંત્રં બ્રહ્માસ્ત્રં પિતામહાત્ વરદાનં ચિંતયામાસ||

Then the best of Vanaras realizing the power of that weapon which arrested his movement as due to the grace of the lord, started thinking about the boon of the Lord Brahma. Then Hanuman started thinking about the Brahmastra, the weapon that invokes the creator Brahma, and the boon given to him.

નમેઽસ્ત્રબંધસ્ય ચ શક્તિરસ્તિ વિમોક્ષણે લોકગુરોઃ પ્રભાવાત્|
ઇત્યેવ મત્વા વિહિતોઽસ્ત્રબંધો મયાઽઽત્મયોનેરસુવર્તિતવ્યઃ||42||
સવીર્યમસ્ત્રસ્ય કપિર્વિચાર્ય પિતામહાનુગ્રહમાત્મનશ્ચ|
વિમોક્ષ શક્તિં પરિચિંતયિત્વા પિતામહાજ્ઞામનુવર્તતે સ્મ||43||

સ|| લોકગુરોઃ પ્રભાવાત્ અસ્ત્રબંધનસ્ય વિમોક્ષણે મે શક્તિઃ નાસ્તિ ઇતિ એવં મત્વા ( ઇદં અસ્રમ્) વિહિતઃ | આત્મયોનેઃ અસ્ત્રબંધઃ મયા અનુવર્તિતવ્યઃ|| સ કપિઃ અસ્ત્રસ્ય વીર્યં વિચાર્ય આત્મનઃ પિતમહાનુગ્રહં ચ વિમોક્ષણશક્તિં પરિચિંતયિત્વા પિતામહ આજ્ઞાં અનુવર્તતે સ્મ||

The weapon has been released, thinking that the power to get released from the weapon is not with me, because of the effect of the power of Brahma. Having thought as above he decided that the weapon should be obeyed. The Vanara reflecting on the power of that weapon, recalling the power of liberation from the bondage by the favor of Brahma, resolved to obey the order of Brahma.

અસ્ત્રેણાપિ હિ બદ્ધસ્ય ભયં મમ ન જાયતે|
પિતામહેંદ્રાભ્યાં રક્ષિતસ્યાનિલેનચ |||44|||
ગ્રહણેચાપિ રક્ષોભિર્મહાન્મે ગુણદર્શનઃ|
રાક્ષસેંદ્રેણ સંવાદઃ તસ્માત્ ગૃહ્ણંતુ માંપરે||45||

સ|| અસ્ત્રેણાપિ બદ્ધસ્ય હિ મમ ભયં ન જાયતે| પિતામહેંદ્રાભ્યાં અનિલેન ચ રક્ષિતઃ સ્યાત્||રક્ષોભિઃ ગ્રહણે ચાપિ મે મહત્ ગુણદર્શનં રાક્ષસેંદ્રેણ સંવાદઃ ( ભવેત્) | તસ્માત્ મામ્ પરે ગૃહ્ણંતુ||

'Though bound by that weapon, I have no fear. I am being protected by Brahma, Indra and the wind god. If I am being held by the Rakshasas I will have a great opportunity to see the king of Rakshasas and discuss. Therefore let them catch me'.

સ નિશ્ચિતાર્થઃ પરવીરહંતા સમીક્ષ્યકારી વિનિવૃત્તચેષ્ટઃ|
પરૈઃ પ્રસહ્યાભિગતૈર્નિગૃહ્ય નનાદ તૈઃ તૈઃ પરિભર્ત્યૃમાનઃ||46||

સ|| પરવીરહંતા સમીક્ષ્યકારી સઃ નિશ્ચિતાર્થઃ વિનિવૃત્તચેષ્ટઃ ( અભવત્) | અભિગતૈઃ તૈઃ તૈઃ પરૈઃ પ્રસહ્ય નિગૃહ્ય પરિભર્ત્સમાનઃ નનાદ||

That killer of the enemy warriors, and one who assesses before he acts, thus having firmly resolved firmly, remained without actions. Seized by the enemies forcibly, and with his power of movement arrested, (he) went slowly. Abused he roared.

તતઃ તં રાક્ષાસા દૃષ્ટ્વા નિર્વિચેષ્ટમરિંદમમ્|
બબંધુઃ શણવલ્કૈશ્ચ દ્રુમચીરૈશ્ચ સંહતૈઃ||47||

સ|| તતઃ રાક્ષસાઃ અરિંદમમ્ તં નિર્વિચેષ્ટમ્ દૃષ્ટ્વા શણવલ્કૈશ્ચ સંહતૈઃ દ્રુમચીરૈશ્ચ બબંધુ||

Then the Rakshasas seeing that scorcher of enemies refraining from movement, bound him with a rope and bark clothes.

સ રોચયામાસ પરૈશ્ચબંધનમ્ પ્રસહ્યવીરૈરભિનિગ્રહં ચ|
કૌતુહલાન્માં યદિ રાક્ષસેંદ્રો દ્રષ્ટુંવ્યવસ્યેદિતિ નિશ્ચિતાર્થઃ||48||

સ|| રાક્ષસેંદ્રઃ મામ્ કૌતુહલાત્ દ્રષ્ટું વ્યવસ્યેદ્યપિ ઇતિ નિશ્ચિતાર્થઃ સઃ પરૈઃ બંધનં વીરૈઃ પ્રસહ્ય અભિનિગ્રહં ચ રોચયામાસ||

'The king of Rakshasas out of curiosity may come to see me if he decides', thinking this way (he) decided to enjoy the bondage by the warriors, even capture by force.

સ બદ્ધસ્તેન વલ્કેન વિમુક્તોઽસ્ત્રેણ વીર્યવાન્|
અસ્ત્રબંધઃ સ ચાન્યાં હિ ન બંધમનુવર્તતે||49||
અથેંદ્રજિત્તુ દ્રુમચીરબદ્ધં વિચર્યવીરઃ કપિસત્તમં તમ્|
વિમુક્ત મસ્ત્રેણ જગામ ચિંતામ્ નાન્યેન બદ્ધો હ્યનુવર્તતેઽસ્ત્રમ્||50||
અહો મહત્કાર્ય કૃતં નિરર્થકં ન રાક્ષસૈર્મંત્રગતિર્વિમૃષ્ઠા|
પુનશ્ચ નાસ્ત્રે વિહતેsસ્ત્રમન્યત્ પ્રવર્તતે સંશયિતાઃ સ્મ સર્વે||51||

સ|| તેન વલ્કેન બદ્ધઃ વીર્યવાન્ સઃ અસ્ત્રેણ વિમુક્તઃ | સઃ અસ્ત્રબંધઃ અન્યં બંધં ન અનુવર્તતે હિ||અથ વીરઃ ઇંદ્રજિત્ દ્રુમચીરબદ્ધં તં કપિસત્તમં અસ્ત્રેણ વિમુક્તં વિચાર્ય ચિંતાં જગામ | બદ્ધઃ અસ્ત્રં ન અનુવર્તતે હિ||અહો મહત્ કર્મ નિરર્થકં કૃતં | રાક્ષસૈઃ મંત્રગતિઃ ન વિમૃષ્ટાઃ | મંત્રે વિહતે અન્યત્ અસ્ત્રં ન પ્રવર્તતે | સર્વે સંશયિતાઃ સ્મ||

The hero bound by the bark is freed by that weapon. That weapon does not tolerate another bondage. Then the hero Indrajit knowing that the best of Vanaras bound by bark rope is thus freed from that weapon started thinking. ' Bound by others the weapon does not follow. Alas great effort has been wasted. The impact of mantra is not considered by the Rakshasas. When mantra is ineffective no other weapon can be effective. We are running a risk'.

અસ્ત્રેણ હનુમાન્ મુક્તોનાત્માનમવબુધ્યત|
કૃષ્યમાણસ્તુ રક્ષોભિઃ તૈશ્ચ બંધૈર્નિપીડિતઃ||52||
હન્યમાનઃ તતઃ ક્રૂરૈ રાક્ષસૈઃ કાષ્ટમુષ્ટિભિઃ|
સમીપં રાક્ષસેંદ્રસ્ય પ્રાકૃષ્યત સ વાનરઃ||53||

સ|| હનુમાન્ આત્માનં અસ્ત્રેણ મુક્તઃ ન અવબુધ્યત | તૈઃ રક્ષોભિઃ કૃષ્યમાણઃ બંધૈઃ નિપીડિતઃ આત્માનં ન અવબુધ્યત|| તતઃ સઃ વાનરઃ કૄરૈઃ રાક્ષસૈઃ કાષ્ઠમુષ્ટિભિઃ હન્યમાનઃ રાક્ષસેંદ્રસ્ય સમીપં પ્રાકૃષ્યત||

Hanuman did not know that he has been released by that weapon. Bound and dragged by the Rakshasas, he was being hurt. Then that Vanara beaten with sticks and fists was dragged to the presence of the king of Rakshasas.

અથેંદ્રજિત્તં પ્રસમીક્ષ્યમુક્તં અસ્ત્રેણ બદ્ધં દ્રુમચીરસૂત્રૈઃ|
વ્યદર્શયત્તત્ર મહાબલમ્ તં હરિપ્રવીરં સગણાય રાજ્ઞે||54||

સ|| અથ દ્રુમચીરસૂત્રૈઃ બદ્ધં તં અસ્ત્રેણ મુક્તં પ્રસમીક્ષ્ય ઇંદ્રજિત્ મહાબલં તં હરિપ્રવીરં તત્ર સગણાય રાજ્ઞે ન્યદર્શયત્||

Then seeing that one bound by the bark ropes and released by that Brahma Astra, mighty Indrajit showed the best of Vanaras to the king along with his courtiers in the assembly.

તં મત્તમિવ માતંગ બદ્ધં કપિવરોત્તમમ્|
રાક્ષસા રાક્ષસેંદ્રાય રાવણાય ન્યવેદયન્||55||
કોઽયં કસ્ય કુતોવાઽત્ર કિં કાર્યં કો વ્યપાશ્રયઃ|
ઇતિ રાક્ષસવીરાણાં તત્ર સંજજ્ઞિરે કથાઃ||56||
હન્યતાં દહ્યતાં વાsપિ ભક્ષ્યતામિતિ ચાપરે|
રાક્ષસાઃ તત્ર સંક્રુદ્ધાઃ પરસ્પર મથાઽબ્રુવન્||57||

સ|| મત્તં માતંગં ઇવ બદ્ધં કપિવરોત્તમં તં રાક્ષસઃ રાક્ષસેંદ્રાય રાવણાય ન્યવેદયત્||કઃ અયં| કસ્ય કુતઃ વા અત્ર| કિં કાર્યં | કઃ વ્યપાશ્રયઃ| ઇતિ રાક્ષવીરાણાં કથાઃ સંજિજ્ઞિરે||અથ અપરે રાક્ષસાઃ સંકૃદ્ધાઃ હન્યતામ્ દહ્યતાં ચાપિ ભક્ષ્યતાં ઇતિ પરસ્પરં અબ્રુવન્ ||

The best of Vanaras , bound like an elephant in the rut, was presented to Ravana by the Rakshasa. 'Who is this? Whom does he belong to? And where did he come from? What business does he have? Thus the Rakshasa heroes talked among themselves. Then some other Rakshasas said to each other 'Kill him. Burn him . Otherwise eat him up'.

અતીત્ય માર્ગં સહસા મહાત્મા સ તત્ર રક્ષોઽધિપપાદમૂલે|
દદર્શ રાજ્ઞઃ પરિચારવૃદ્દાન્ ગૃહં મહારત્ન વિભૂષિતં ચ||58||

સ|| મહાત્મા સઃ સહસા માર્ગં અતીત્ય તત્ર રાજ્ઞઃ મહારત્નવિભૂષિતં ગૃહં રક્ષોધિપપાદમૂલે પરિચારવૃદ્ધાન્ દદર્શ||

The great one quickly crossing the path came near the king's palace adorned with precious gems. Near his feet he saw aged and experienced ones.

સ દદર્શ મહાતેજા રાવણઃ કપિસત્તમમ્|
રક્ષોભિર્વિકૃતાકારૈઃ કૃષ્યમાણ મિતસ્તતઃ||59||
રાક્ષસાધિપતિં ચાપિ દદર્શ કપિસત્તમઃ|
તેજોબલસમાયુક્તં તપંતમિવ ભાસ્કરમ્||60||

સ|| મહતેજાઃ સઃ રાવણઃ વિકૃતાકારૈઃ રક્ષોભિઃ ઇતઃ તતઃ કૃષ્યમાનં કપિસત્તમં દદર્શ||કપિસત્તમઃ ચ તેજોબલસમાયુક્તં તપંતં ભાસ્કરં ઇવ રાક્ષસાધિપતિં દદર્શ||

The resplendent one, that Ravana saw the foremost of Vanaras dragged here and there by the Rakshasas. The best of Vanaras also saw the Rakshasa king who had splendor and strength, radiating brilliance like the Sun.

સરોષસંવર્તિત તામ્રદૃષ્ટિઃ દશાનનઃ તં કપિમન્વવેક્ષ્ય|
અથોપવિષ્યાન્ કુલશીલવૃદ્ધાન્ સમાદિશત્તં પ્રતિમંત્રિમુખ્યાન્||61||
યથાક્રમં તૈઃ સ કપિર્વિપૃષ્ટઃ કાર્યાર્થમર્થસ્ય ચ મૂલમાદૌ|
નિવેદયામાસ હરીશ્વરસ્ય દૂતઃ સકાશાત્ અહમાગતોઽસ્મિ||62||

સ|| સઃ દશાનનઃ રોષસંવર્તિતતામ્રદૃષ્ટિઃ તં કપિં અન્વેક્ષ્ય અથ ઉપવિષ્ટાન્ કુલશીલબદ્ધાન્ મંત્રિમુખ્યાન્ તંપ્રતિ સમાદિશત્ ||તૈઃ યથાક્રમં કાર્યાર્થં અર્ધસ્ય મૂલં વિપૃષ્ટઃ સઃ કપિઃ હરીશ્વરસ્ય સકાશાત્ આગતઃ અસ્મિ ઇતિ નિવેદયામાસ||

The ten-headed one with his red eyes rolling in rage observing the Vanara closely, ordered the noble and aged ministers and important ministers. In proper order the purpose, origin of the purpose were asked by them. The Vanara reported that he is a messenger of the king of Vanaras. 'By order of the king, I came from his place'.

ચતુર્વિંશત્ સહસ્રિકાયાં સંહિતાયામ્
શ્રીમત્સુન્દરકાંડે અષ્ટચત્ત્વારિંશસ્સર્ગઃ ||

Thus ends Sarga forty eight of Sundarakanda in Ramayana , the first poem ever composed by the first poet sage Valmiki.
