sundarakāṁḍa.
atha ṣaṭpaṁcāśassargaḥ||

tatastu śiṁśupāmūlē jānakīṁ paryupasthitām|
abhivādyābravīdiṣṭyā paśyāmi tvāmihākṣatām||1||

sa|| tataḥ śiṁśupāmūlē paryupasthitāṁ jānakīṁ abhivādya bravīt | diṣṭyā tvāṁ akṣatāṁ iha paśyāmi||

Then offering salutations to Sita sitting under the Simsupa tree, he said,' Luckily I am seeing you unharmed'.

tatastaṁ prasthitaṁ sītā vīkṣamāṇā punaḥ punaḥ|
bhartr̥snēhānvitaṁ vākyaṁ hanumaṁtaṁ abhāṣata||2||
kāmamasya tvamēvaikaḥ kāryasya parisādhanē|
paryāptaḥ paravīraghnaḥ yaśasyaḥ tē balōdayaḥ||3||
śaraistu saṁkulāṁ kr̥tvā laṁkām parabalārdanaḥ|
māṁ nayēdyadi kākut-sthaḥ tat tasya sadr̥śaṁ bhavēt||4||
tadyathā tasya vikrāntamanurūpaṁ mahātmanaḥ|
bhavatyāhavaśūrasya tathā tvamupapādaya||5||

sa|| tataḥ prasthitaṁ hanumaṁtaṁ vīkṣamāṇā sītā bhartr̥snēhānvitaṁ vākyaṁ abhāṣata||asya kāryasya parisādhanē kāmaṁ tvaṁ ēkaṁ ēva paryāptaḥ | asya tē balōdayaḥ yaśasyaḥ || parabalārdanaḥ kākut-sthaḥ śaraistu laṁkāṁ saṁkulāṁ kr̥tvā yadi māṁ nayēt tat tasya sadr̥śaṁ bhavēt ||tat mahātmanaḥ āhavaśūrasya tasya vikrāṁtaṁ anurūpaṁ yathā bhavati tathā tvaṁ upapādaya ||

Then seeing Hanuman who is all set to go, Sita spoke words showing her love to her husband. ' For this mission to be accomplished surely you alone are capable. With this you attain fame and strength. If the slayer of enemy forces, Kakutstha, creating distress all over Lanka with his arrows and takes me back that will be worthy of him. You act in a way that is worthy of him who is chivalrous in battle , who is a great soul'.

tadarthōpahitaṁ vākyaṁ praśritaṁ hētusaṁhitam|
niśamya hanumāṁstasyā vākya muttaramabravīt||6||

sa|| hanumān praśritaṁ tat hētusaṁhitaṁ arthōpahitaṁ tasyāḥ vākyaṁ niśamya hanumān vākyaṁ uttaraṁ abravīt |

Hanuman hearing those properly inclined, meaningful words supported with reason, spoke in response.

kṣipramēṣyati kāku-t-sthō haryr̥kṣapravarairvr̥taḥ|
yastē yudhi vijityārīn śōkaṁ vyapanayiṣyati||7||
ēvamāśvāsya vaidēhīṁ hanumān mārutātmajaḥ|
gamanāya matiṁ kr̥tvā vaidēhīṁ abhyavādayat||8||
tatassa kapiśārdūlaḥ svāmisaṁdarśanōtsukaḥ|
ārurōha giriśrēṣṭhaṁ ariṣṭhaṁ arimardanaḥ||9||

sa|| kākut-sthaḥ haryakṣu pravaraiḥ vr̥taḥ kṣipraṁ ēṣyati | yaḥ yudhi arīn vijitya tē śōkam vyapanayiṣyati ||vaidēhīṁ ēvaṁ aśvāsya hanumān mārutātmajaḥ gamanāya matiṁ kr̥tvā vaidēhīṁ abhyavādayat ||tataḥ kapiśārdūlaḥ svāmisaṁdarśanōtsukaḥ ariṣṭhaṁ giriśrēṣṭhaṁ arimardanaḥ ārurōha ||

' Kakutstha will come quickly along with Vanara chiefs. He having won the enemies in the battle will remove your sorrow'. Thus having assured Vaidehi , Hanuman the son of wind god, having made up his mind to go offered salutations to Vaidehi. Then the tiger among Vanaras and crusher of foes, eager for meeting the Lord, ascended the best of mountains, Arishta.

tuṁgapadmakajuṣṭābhiḥ nīlābhirvanarājibhiḥ|
sōttarīyamivāṁbhōdaiḥ śr̥ṁgāṁtaravilambibhiḥ||10||
bōdhyamānamiva prītyā divākarakaraiḥ śubhaiḥ|
unmiṣantamivōddūtaiḥ lōcanairiva dhātubhiḥ||11||

sa|| tuṁgapadmakajuṣṭābhiḥ nīlābhiḥ vanarājibhiḥ śr̥ṁgāṁtara vilambibhiḥ aṁbōdhaiḥ sa uttarīyaṁ iva (asti)||śubhaiḥ divākarakaraiḥ prītyā bōdhyamānaṁ iva (asti) uddhūtaiḥ lōcanairiva dhātubhī unmiṣantaṁ iva ||

The mountain was having forest ranges full of tall Padmaka trees and the dark ones. The clouds hanging between peaks looked like an upper garment. The auspicious Sun rays were as though affectionately waking up ( the mountain). The minerals pushed up by the wind were like eyes that are opening up.

tōyaughanissvanairmaṁdraiḥ prādhīta miva parvatam|
pragītamiva vispaṣṭaiḥ rnānāprasravaṇasvanaiḥ||12||
dēvadārubhiratyuccaiḥ ūrdhvabāhumiva sthitam|
prapāta jalanirghōṣaiḥ prākr̥ṣṭa miva sarvataḥ||13||

sa|| mandraiḥ tōyaughaniśvanaiḥ prādhītaṁ iva vispaṣṭaiḥ nānāprasravaṇa svanaiḥ pragītaṁ iva parvatam|| atyuccaiḥ dēvadārubhiḥ ūrdhvabāhuṁ iva sthitaṁ | prapāta jalanirghōṣaiḥ sarvataḥ prākr̥ṣṭaṁ iva |

The loud sounds of gurgling waters were like reciting (mantras) with specific sounds. The different kinds of sounds of water falls were as though the mountain was singing. The tall Devadarus were like one standing with the arms raised. The sounds of water falls all over were like reverberations.

vēpamāna miva śyāmaiḥ kaṁpamānaiḥ śaradghanaiḥ|
vēṇubhirmārutōddūtaiḥ kūjantamiva kīcakaiḥ||14||
niśsvasantamivāmarṣāt ghōrairāśīviṣōttamaiḥ|
nīhārakr̥tagaṁbhīraiḥ dhyāyantamiva gahvaraiḥ||15||

sa|| śyāmaiḥ kaṁpamānaiḥ śaradghanaiḥ vēpamānaṁ iva| vēṇubhiḥ kīcakaiḥ mārutōddhūtaiḥkīcakaiḥ kūjaṁtaṁ iva ( asti) ||ghōraiḥ āśīviṣōttamaiḥ niḥśvaśaṁtaṁ iva| nīhārakr̥ta gaṁbhīraiḥ gahvaraiḥ dhyāyantaṁ iva ||

The mountain appeared trembling with dark clouds of autumn. The hollow bamboos hit by the winds made sweet noises like bamboo flutes . (The mountain sounds were) like the hissing sounds of dreadful poisonous snakes. The caves majestically covered with mist were as though meditating.

mēghapādanibhaiḥ pādaiḥ prakāntamiva sarvataḥ|
jr̥ṁbhamāna mivākāśē śikharairabhramālibhiḥ||16||
kūṭaiśca bahudhā kīrṇaiḥ śōbhitaṁ bahukandaraiḥ|
sālatālāśvakarṇaiśca vaṁśaiśca bahubhirvr̥tam||17||

sa||mēghapādanibhaiḥ pādaiḥ sarvataḥ prakāntamiva abhramālibhiḥ śikharaiḥ ākāśē jr̥ṁbhamāṇaṁ iva||bahudhā kīrṇaiḥ bahukaṁdaraiḥ kūṭaiśca śōbhitaṁ | bahubhiḥ sālatālāśvakarṇaiścha vaṁśaiśca vtataṁ||

The ranges of foothills appearing like feet of the clouds and the peaks like garlands of clouds , it made one look like yawning. With many kinds of caves and mountain peaks it was delightful. It was covered with many Sala, Tala, and Aswakarna trees, as well as bamboos and reeds.

latāvitānairvitataiḥ puṣpavadbhiralaṁkr̥tam|
nānāmr̥ga gaṇākīrṇaṁ dhātuniṣyandabhūṣitam||18||
bahuprasravaṇōpētaṁ śilāsaṁcayasaṁkaṭam|
maharṣiyakṣagaṁdharva kinnarōrugasēvitam||19||
latāpādasaṁghātaṁ siṁhādhyuṣitakandaram|
vyāghrasaṁghasamākīrṇaṁ svādumūlaphaladrumam||20||

sa||vitataiḥ puṣpavadbhiḥ latāvitānaiḥ alaṁkr̥taṁ nānāmr̥gagaṇākīrṇaṁ dhātuniṣyaṁdabhūṣitam ||bahupraśravaṇōpētaṁ śilāsaṁcayasaṁkaṭaṁ maharṣi yakṣa gaṁdharva kinnaraḥ urugaḥ sēvitam||latāpādapasaṁghātaṁ siṁhādhyuṣitakandaram vyāghra saṁgha samākīrṇaṁ svādumūlaphalādrumam||

It was spread with creepers filled with flowers and there were herds of many types of animals. the mountain was decorated with colorful minerals dropping down. With many waterfalls with heaps of rocks making the flow of water difficult, it was inhabited by sages, Yakshas, Gandharvas, Kinnaras and Nagas. With clusters of creepers and trees, trees bearing tasty fruits and roots , caves inhabited by lions were scattered all over.

taṁ ārurōha hanumān parvataṁ pavanātmajaḥ|
rāmadarśana śīghrēṇa praharṣēṇābhicōditaḥ||21||
tēna pādatalākrāntā ramyēṣu girisānuṣu|
saghōṣāḥ samasīryanta śilāḥ cūrṇīkr̥tāstataḥ||22||

sa|| pavanātmajaḥ hanumān rāmadarśana śīghrēṇa praharṣēṇa abhicōditaḥ taṁ parvataṁ ārurōha|| tataḥ ramyēṣu girisānuṣu tēna pādatalākrāṁtāḥ śilāḥ sughōṣāḥ cūrṇīkr̥tāḥ samasīryanta||

Hanuman, the son of wind god, with joy and anxious to see Rama soon, ascended the mountain happily. The rocks on beautiful mountain ranges crushed under Hanuman's feet, making a loud noise rolled down reduced to powder.

sa taṁ āruhya śailēṁdraṁ vyavarthata mahākapiḥ|
dakṣiṇāduttaraṁ pāraṁ prārthayan lavaṇāṁbhasaḥ||23||
adhiruhya tatō vīraḥ parvataṁ pavanātmajaḥ|
dadarśa sāgaraṁ bhīmaṁ mīnōraganiṣēvitam||24||

sa||saḥ mahākapiḥ lavaṇāṁbhasaḥ dakṣiṇāt uttaraṁ pāraṁ prārthayan taṁ śailēṁdraṁ āruhya vyavardhata||tataḥ vīraṁ pavanātmajaḥ parvatṁ adhiruhya mīnōruganiṣēvitaṁ bhīmaṁ sāgaraṁ dadarśa||

The great Vanara wishing to cross the ocean from the southern tip to northern shore having climbed the mountain grew in size. Then the heroic son of wind god having climbed the mountain saw the fearsome ocean inhabited by fishes and snakes.

sa māruta ivā:'kāśaṁ mārutasyā:'tmasaṁbhavaḥ|
prapēdē hariśārdūlō dakṣiṇāduttaraṁ diśam||25||
sa tadā pīḍitastēna kapinā parvatōttamaḥ|
rarāsa saha tairbhūtaiḥ praviśan vasudhātalam||26||
kampamānaiśca śikharaiḥ patadbhirapi ca drumaiḥ|

sa|| mārutasya ātmasaṁbhavaḥ sā hariśārdūlaḥ dakṣiṇāt uttaraṁ diśaṁ mārutaḥ iva ākāśaṁ prapēdē||sa tadā tēna kapinā pīḍitaḥ saḥ parvatōttamaḥ bhūtaiḥ saha vasudhātalaṁ praviśan kaṁpamānaiḥ śikharaiḥ patatbhiḥ drumaiḥ rarāsa||

The son of wind god, tiger among the Vanaras, leaped in to the sky form the south towards north like wind god. Then pressured by the Vanara the best of mountains entered the earth along with all creatures , with its mountain tops shaken and trees falling making great sound.

tasyōru vēgōnmathitāḥ pādapāḥ puṣpaśālinaḥ||27||
nipēturbhūtalē rugṇāḥ śakrāyudha hatā iva|
kandarāntarasaṁsthānaṁ pīḍitānāṁ mahaujasām||28||
siṁhānāṁ ninadō bhīmō nabhō bhindan sa śuśruvē|

sa|| tasya uruvēgāt mathitāḥ puṣpaśālinaḥ pādapāḥ rugṇāḥ śakrāyudhahatā iva bhūtalē nipētuḥ||kandarāntara saṁsthānam pīḍitāṁ mahaujasāṁ siṁhānāṁ bhīmaḥ saḥ ninādaḥ nabhaḥ bhindan śuśruvē||

Shaken by the force of his thighs , the blossoming trees fell on the ground like sick people struck down by Indra's thunderbolt. The terrific roar of lions residing in those crushed caves was heard cracking the sky .

srastāvyāvr̥tta vasanā vyākulīkr̥tabhūṣaṇāḥ||29||
vidyādharyaḥ samutpētuḥ sahasā dharaṇī dharāt|
atipramāṇā balinō dīptajihvā mahāviṣāḥ||30||
nipīḍita śirōgrīvā vyacēṣṭanta mahāhayaḥ|

sa|| vidhyādharyaḥ trastavyāvr̥tavasanā vyākulīkr̥ta bhūṣaṇāḥ sahasā dharaṇī dharāt samutpētuḥ||atipramāṇaḥ balinaḥ dīptajihvāḥ mahāviṣāḥ mahāhayaḥ nipīḍitaśirōgrīvāḥ vyacēṣṭanta||

The Vidyadharas who were afraid , with their clothes slipped in fear with ornaments disarrayed at once flew from the mountain. Strong and highly poisonous snakes huge in size with glowing tongues were pressed on their heads and necks ( by hanuman taking a leap).

kinnarōraga gaṁdharvayakṣavidyādharastadā||31||
pīḍitaṁ taṁ nagaraṁ tyaktvā gaganamāsthitāḥ|
sa ca bhūmidharaḥ śrīmān balinā tēna pīḍitaḥ||32||
sa vr̥kṣaśikharōdagraḥ pravivēśa rasātalam|

sa|| tadā kinnarōraga gaṁdharvayakṣavidyādharaḥ pīḍitaṁ taṁ nagavaram tyaktvā gaganaṁ āsthitāḥ||balinā tēna pīḍitaḥ savr̥kṣaśikharōdagraḥ śrīmān saḥ bhūmidharaśca rasātalaṁ pravivēśa||

Then the Kinnaras, Gandharvas, Yakshas, Vidyadharas left the pressured mountain and occupied the sky. Pushed by the powerful one , the mountain along with the trees and its peaks sank into the underworld.

daśayōjanavistāraḥ triṁśadyōjanamucchritaḥ||33||
dharaṇyām samatāṁ yātaḥ sa babhūva dharādharaḥ|

sa|| daśayōjanavistāraḥ triṁśat yōjanaṁ ucchritaṁ dharādharaḥ dharaṇyāṁ samatāṁ yātaḥ babhūva||

Ten Yojana wide and thirty yojana high that mountain was levelled to ground.

sa liliṁga yiṣurbhīmaṁ salīlaṁ lavaṇārṇavam||34||
kallōlāsphāla vēlānta mutpapāta nabhō hariḥ||35||

sa|| sa hariḥ bhīmaṁ kallōlāsphālavēlāṁ taṁ lavaṇārṇavam salīlaṁ liliṁghayiṣuḥ nabhaḥ utpapāta||

The Vanara desiring to cross the ocean of salt water with huge waves dashing towards the shore leaped into the sky.

ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē vālmīkīyē
caturviṁśat sahasrikāyāṁ saṁhitāyām
śrīmatsundarakāṁḍē ṣaṭpaṁcāśassargaḥ ||

Thus ends the fifty sixth Sarga of Sundarakanda in Ramayana the first poem ever composed in Sanskrit by the first poet sage Valmiki.
