Sarga 61

"निर्विषयं च चक्रुः" means, “destroyed without a second thought.

What did they destroy?  महावनं - the great forest.

The great forest in this context is "मधुवनं", a honey grove.

The Sarga is about how that  honey grove मधुवनं got destroyed 

Sarga 61 starts with the line, "ततो जाम्बवतो वाक्यं अगृह्णन्त वनौकसः"(61.01)||;

meaning that "then Jambavan's words were accepted by the Vanaras". Those words of Jambavan were about finding out  Rama's thoughts on further course of action. Then all the Vanaras take to skies, to reach the Prasaravana hill, where Rama, Lakshmana and Sugriva are waiting

Vanaras were flying back in happy mood, having accomplished their goal. The feeling of accomplishment meant, that their minds too, freed from the search, are virtually flying. Thus, the freed mind loses its way on seeing Madhuvan.

Seeker, in search of Self or liberation, may also lose his way. This Sarga reveals how easy is it for one to lose his way.

In Gita Arjuna asks Bhagavan, how to control this mind which is so fickle. Krishna says, "असंशयं महाबाहो", without doubt, he says it is difficult to control.  "सुदुष्करं"- very difficult. But not impossible. Krishna says "अभ्यासेन तु कौन्तेया", "Arjuna, the control comes with practice".

Here in this incident of Madhuvan, with Hanuma and Angada etc leading the way, we see clearly , how fickle indeed the mind is. 

And we also see how difficult it is to control the same.

|| తతో జామ్బవతో వాక్యమగృఃణన్త వనౌకసః|

అఙ్గదప్రముఖా వీరా హనుమాంశ్చ మహాకపిః||61.01||

స|| తతః అఙ్గదప్రముఖాః వనౌకసః మహాకపిః హనుమంతశ్చజాంబవతః వాక్యం అగృహ్ణంత||

తతః అఙ్గదప్రముఖాః వనౌకసః - 

then Angada and other Vanara leaders

మహాకపిః హనుమంతశ్చ - 

great Vanara Hanuma too

జాంబవతః వాక్యం అగృహ్ణంత - 

accepted the words of Jambavan.

"Then Angada and other leaders,  and other wanderers of the forest including Hanuman accepted the words of great Vanara Jambavan. " ||61.01||

||Sloka 61.02||

ప్రీతిమన్తః తతః సర్వే వాయుపుత్త్ర పురస్సరాః|

మహేంద్రాద్రిం పరిత్యజ్య పుప్లువుః ప్లవగర్షభాః||61.02||

స|| తతః సర్వే ప్లవగర్షభాః ప్రీతిమన్తః మహేంద్రాద్రిం పరిత్యజ్య వాయుపుత్త్ర పురస్సరాః పుప్లువుః|| 

Rama Tika says- ప్రీతిమన్త ఇతి। ఆకాశం ఛాదయన్త ఇవ మత్తా మహజగజా ఇవ మహాకాయాః భూతైః సిద్ధాదిభిః సభాజ్యమానం పూజ్యమానం హనూమన్తం దృష్టిభిః  అనిమిష అవలోకనైః  వహన్త ఇవ సమృద్ధః సమృద్ధః సంపన్నః అర్థః ప్రయోజనం ఏషాం తే కర్మసిద్ధిభిః సీతాదర్శన లంకాదహన ఆదిభిః ఉన్నతాః ఉద్ధత చిత్తాః వాయుపుత్ర పురస్సరాః ప్రీతిమన్తః సర్వే వానరాః రాఘవే రాఘవస్య కార్య సిద్ధింకర్తుం సంపాదయితుం పరంఅం యశః సమాదాయ ప్రాప్య మహేన్ద్రాత్ సముత్పత్య పుప్లువుః జగ్ముః। చతుర్ణామేకాన్వయీ॥2-4॥

తతః సర్వే ప్లవగర్షభాః ప్రీతిమన్తః - 

All of the Vanaras, very pleased

మహేంద్రాద్రిం పరిత్యజ్య -

 left Mahendra mountain

వాయుపుత్త్ర పురస్సరాః పుప్లువుః -

 led by  Hanuman flew

"All of the Vanaras, who were very pleased  left Mahendra mountain led by  Hanuman and flew into the sky. " ||61.02||

||Sloka 61.03||

మేరుమందరసంకాశా మత్తా ఇవ మహాగజాః|

ఛాదయంత ఇవాకాశం మహాకాయా మహాబలాః||61.03||

స|| (తే) మేరుమందరసంకాశాః మత్తాః మహాగజాః ఇవ ఆకాశం ఛాదయంతః ఇవ మహాబలాః మహాకాయా ( పుప్లువుః)||

(తే) మేరుమందరసంకాశాః - 

resembling the mountains Meru and Mandara

మత్తాః మహాగజాః ఇవ - 

like elephants in the rut

ఆకాశం ఛాదయంతః ఇవ - 

as if covering the whole sky

మహాబలాః మహాకాయా - 

mighty with huge bodies 

( పుప్లువుః - flew into the sky)

"They were like elephants in the rut , resembling the mountains Meru and Mandara, mighty with huge body and . They flew as if covering the whole sky." ||61.03||

సభాజ్యమానం భూతైః తం ఆత్మవంతం మహాబలమ్|

హనూమంతం మహావేగం వహంత ఇవ దృష్టిభిః ||61.04||

స|| (తే) భూతైః సభాజ్యమానం ఆత్మవంతం మహాబలమ్ హనూమంతం మహావేగం వహంత ఇవ దృష్టిభిః ||

(తే) భూతైః సభాజ్యమానం - praised by all beings 

ఆత్మవంతం మహాబలమ్ - self-confident mighty

మహావేగం హనూమంతం  - speedy Hanuman 

వహంత ఇవ దృష్టిభిః - seen with an unblinking eye

||Sloka summary||

"Praised by all beings that self-confident mighty Hanuman flying at great speeds was seen by them without blinking." ||61.04||

||Sloka 61.05||

రాఘవేచార్థనిర్వృత్తిం కర్తుం చ పరమం యశః|

సమాధాయ సమృద్ధార్థాః కర్మసిద్ధిభిరున్నతాః||61.05||

స|| (తే) రాఘవే చ అర్థ నిర్వృత్తిం సమాధాయ సమృద్ధార్థాః కర్మసిద్ధిభిః ఉన్నతాః  పరమం యశః కర్తుం (పుప్లువుః ) || 

Govindaraja Tikaa says - సభాజ్యమానం సంపూజ్యమానం । వహన్త ఇవ దృష్టిభిరితి। అర్థ నిర్వృత్తిం అర్థ సిద్ధిం సమాధాయ నిశ్చిత్య సంకల్పం వా సమృద్ధార్థాః సిద్ధకార్యాః కర్మ సిద్ధిభిః కార్య సిద్ధిభిః ఉన్నతాః ।ఇతరేభ్య ఉత్కృష్టాః ।రామప్రతీకారే రామ ప్రత్యుపకారే । పుప్లువురితి పూర్వేణ సంబన్ధః॥

ఉన్నతాః - means being on a high.

Poet says the Vanaras flying back were on a high, because of having accomplished their task.

రాఘవే చ అర్థ నిర్వృత్తిం సమాధాయ - 

to inform Rama about completed tasks 

సమృద్ధార్థాః కర్మసిద్ధిభిః ఉన్నతాః  - 

by those who completed their tasks successfully , who were high,   

పరమం యశః కర్తుం (పుప్లువుః )- 

to work to attain fame 

(పుప్లువుః ) - flew into the sky

"To inform Rama about completed tasks, by those who completed their tasks successfully , who were high, who wanted to work to attain fame , they flew into the sky." ||61.05||

||Sloka 61.06||

ప్రియాఖ్యానోన్ముఖాః సర్వే సర్వే యుద్ధాభినందినః|

సర్వే రామప్రతీకారే నిశ్చితార్ధా మనస్వినః||61.06||

స|| సర్వే ప్రియాఖ్యానోన్ముఖాః సర్వే యుద్ధాభినందినః సర్వే రామప్రతీకారే నిశ్చితార్ధా మనస్వినః ||

Rama Tika says- రామ ప్రతీకారే రామ కర్తవ్యే రావణ ప్రతీకారే నిశ్చితార్థాః అభూవన్ ఇతి శేషః।

||Sloka meanings||

సర్వే ప్రియాఖ్యానోన్ముఖాః - 

all of them desirous of telling the story of success

ప్రియమైన వార్త అందించుటకు తహతహలాడుచున్నవారు

సర్వే యుద్ధాభినందినః - 

all of them were anxious to fight a war

సర్వే రామప్రతీకారే -  

all of them determined to avenge Ravana's misdeeds 

నిశ్చితార్ధా మనస్వినః- with a mind that is made up 

( పుప్లువుః - flew into the skyఎగిరిరి)

"All of them were anxious to fight a war. All of them were determined to please Rama." ||61.06||   

Here poet says that  all Vanaras  were anxious to fight a war. All of them determined to avenge Ravana's misdeeds. We hear similar comment by Vibhishana in Sarga 52 about Ravana's Rakshasas. There Vibhishana tells Ravana, that all the Rakshasa are ready for a war and that by killing Hanuma, he would be  depriving them of a chance for war.

ప్లవమానాః ఖమాప్లుత్య తతస్తే కాననౌకసః|

నందనోపమమాసేదుర్వనం  ద్రుమలతాయుతమ్||61.07||

స|| తతః తే కాననౌకసః ఖం ఆప్లుత్య ప్లవమానాః ద్రుమలయతాయుతం నన్దనోపమమ్ వనం ఆసేదుః||

తతః తే కాననౌకసః ఖం ఆప్లుత్య- 

then the  forest dwellers leaping up in the sky

ప్లవమానాః - 

flying through 

ద్రుమలయతాయుతం - 

full of trees and creepers

నన్దనోపమమ్ వనం ఆసేదుః- 

saw a grove like Indra's Nandana grove

"Then the forest dwellers leaping and rising up in the sky entered the garden which is full of trees and creepers which is like Indra's garden. " ||61.07||

యత్తన్మధువనం నామ సుగ్రీవస్యాభిరక్షితమ్|

అధృష్యం  సర్వభూతానాం సర్వభూతమనోహరమ్ ||61.08||

that which was difficult to access

beautiful garden of Sugriva is called Madhuvan

తే త ద్వన ముపాగమ్య బభూవుః పరమోత్కటాః|

వానరా వానరేన్ద్రస్య మనః కాంతతమం మహత్||61.10||

స॥ తే వానరాః వానరేన్ద్రస్య మనః క్లాంతతమం మహత్ తత్ వనం ఉపాగమ్య పరమోత్కటాః బభూవుః ||

తే వానరాః - those Vanaras  

వానరేన్ద్రస్య  -  of the king

మనః క్లాంతతమం మహత్ తత్ వనం ఉపాగమ్య -

approaching that grove which is very enchanting 

పరమోత్కటాః బభూవుః -

 became highly desirous  of tasting honey .

"The Vanaras, approaching the great enchanting garden of the king of Vanaras, were highly desirous of tasting the honey of the groves." ||61.10||

తతస్తే వానరా హృష్టా దృష్ట్వా మధువనం మహత్|

కుమారం అభ్యయాచంత మధూని మధుపిఙ్గళాః||61.11||

some jumped from one tree to another

ఉదీర్ణవేగాః  - some very swift ones 

మహీతలాత్ మహాద్రుమాగ్రాణి అభిసంపతన్తి - 

jumped from the ground to the top of the trees

"Some ran from one tree to another. Some jumped from the top of the tree. Some jumped from broken branches. Some very swift ones jumped from the round to the top of the huge trees."||61.16||

గాయన్తం అన్యః - one was singing

ప్రహసన్ ఉపైతి- others approached him laughing

హసన్తం అన్యః -  to the one who was laughing 

ప్రరుదన్ ఉపైతి - another went roaring  

రుదంతం అన్యః - one was roaring

ప్రణుదన్  ఉపైతి-  another was pushing

నుదన్తం - one was encouraging

అన్యః ప్రణదన్ ఉపైతి- another fell over and was shouting

"While one was singing, others approached him laughing. While one was laughing then another went roaring. While one was roaring another was pushing. While one was encouraging the other who fell over and was shouting." ||61.17||

సమాకులం తత్కపి సైన్యమాసీత్

 మధుప్రసానోత్కట సత్త్వచేష్టం |

న చాత్రకశ్చన్నభభూవ మత్తో

 న చాత్ర కశ్చిన్నబభూవ తృప్తః||61.18||

మధుప్రసానోత్కట  సత్త్వచేష్టం- 

with various activities due to excessive drinking 

తత్ కపిసైన్యం సమాకులం ఆసీత్  - 

the gathered Vanara army raised a cacophony 

అత్ర కశ్చిత్ మత్తః న బభూవ ఇతి న - 

there was none who was not intoxicated

అత్ర కశ్చిత్ తృప్తః బభూవ ఇతి  న - 

there was none who was satisfied

"Having lost control due to excessive drinking , the Vanara army raised a cacophony. There was none who was not intoxicated. There was none who was satisfied." ||61.18||

తతో వనం తత్పరిభక్ష్యమాణమ్

 ద్రుమాంశ్చ విధ్వంసితపత్త్రపుష్పాన్|

సమీక్ష్య కోపాద్దధివక్త్రనామా

 నివారయామాస కపిః కపీంస్తాన్||61.19||

 seeing that grove  

పరిభక్ష్యమాణమ్ తాన్ కపీన్ - 

those Vanaras who were drinking  

కోపాత్ నివారయామాస - 

with anger started stopping them

చకార భూయో మతి ముగ్రతేజా

 మసక్తమన్యాంశ్చ తలైర్జఘాన|

సమేత్యకైశ్చిత్ కలహం చకార

Tilaka Tika says- సమాపయన్తః మృతకల్పం కుర్వన్తః। నిర్విషయం నిర్గత మధు ఫలాది భోజ్యమ్।

||Sloka meanings||

సమగ్రాః కపయః మదాత్ - 

drunk, all the Vanaras together 

నఖైః తుదన్తః  దశనైః దసన్తః - 

scratched with their nails. Bit with their teeth.

తలైశ్చ పాదైశ్చ తం కపిం సమాపయన్తః - 

almost killed the Vanara with their hands and feet

మహావనం - that great garden 

(తే సర్వే)  నిర్విషయం చకృః- ( all of them) looted fully

||Sloka summary||

"Drunk, they all together scratched with their nails. Bit with their teeth. They almost killed the Vanara with their hands and feet. They looted the garden completely." ||61.23|| 

Without realizing their fault, some roared, some held and pulled Dadhimukha. The drunk Vanara's scratched with their nails and bit with their teeth. They kicked with their hands and feet. They looted the garden completely without a thought.

In Sarga 55, we heard about consequences of uncontrolled anger.

Here we have a demonstration of a similar uncontrolled mental state.

Being drunk, actions preventing them spark further destruction.

Thus ends Sarga sixty-one of Sundarakanda.

Sundarakanda

Sarga 61

"निर्विषयं च चक्रुः" means, “destroyed without a second thought.

What did they destroy?  महावनं - the great forest.

The great forest in this context is "मधुवनं", a honey grove.

The Sarga is about how that  honey grove मधुवनं got destroyed 

Sarga 61 starts with the line, "ततो जाम्बवतो वाक्यं अगृह्णन्त वनौकसः"(61.01)||;

meaning that "then Jambavan's words were accepted by the Vanaras". Those words of Jambavan were about finding out  Rama's thoughts on further course of action. Then all the Vanaras take to skies, to reach the Prasaravana hill, where Rama, Lakshmana and Sugriva are waiting

Vanaras were flying back in happy mood, having accomplished their goal. The feeling of accomplishment meant, that their minds too, freed from the search, are virtually flying. Thus, the freed mind loses its way on seeing Madhuvan.

Seeker, in search of Self or liberation, may also lose his way. This Sarga reveals how easy is it for one to lose his way.

In Gita Arjuna asks Bhagavan, how to control this mind which is so fickle. Krishna says, "असंशयं महाबाहो", without doubt, he says it is difficult to control.  "सुदुष्करं"- very difficult. But not impossible. Krishna says "अभ्यासेन तु कौन्तेया", "Arjuna, the control comes with practice".

Here in this incident of Madhuvan, with Hanuma and Angada etc leading the way, we see clearly , how fickle indeed the mind is. 

And we also see how difficult it is to control the same.

రాఘవేచార్థనిర్వృత్తిం కర్తుం చ పరమం యశః|

సమాధాయ సమృద్ధార్థాః కర్మసిద్ధిభిరున్నతాః||61.05||

Govindaraja Tikaa says - సభాజ్యమానం సంపూజ్యమానం । వహన్త ఇవ దృష్టిభిరితి। అర్థ నిర్వృత్తిం అర్థ సిద్ధిం సమాధాయ నిశ్చిత్య సంకల్పం వా సమృద్ధార్థాః సిద్ధకార్యాః కర్మ సిద్ధిభిః కార్య సిద్ధిభిః ఉన్నతాః ।ఇతరేభ్య ఉత్కృష్టాః ।రామప్రతీకారే రామ ప్రత్యుపకారే । పుప్లువురితి పూర్వేణ సంబన్ధః॥

ఉన్నతాః - means being on a high.

Poet says the Vanaras flying back were on a high, because of having accomplished their task.

రాఘవే చ అర్థ నిర్వృత్తిం సమాధాయ - 

to inform Rama about completed tasks 

సమృద్ధార్థాః కర్మసిద్ధిభిః ఉన్నతాః  - 

by those who completed their tasks successfully , who were high,   

పరమం యశః కర్తుం (పుప్లువుః )- 

to work to attain fame 

(పుప్లువుః ) - flew into the sky

సర్వే ప్రియాఖ్యానోన్ముఖాః - 

all of them desirous of telling the story of success

ప్రియమైన వార్త అందించుటకు తహతహలాడుచున్నవారు

సర్వే యుద్ధాభినందినః - 

all of them were anxious to fight a war

సర్వే రామప్రతీకారే -  

all of them determined to avenge Ravana's misdeeds 

నిశ్చితార్ధా మనస్వినః- with a mind that is made up

"All of them were anxious to fight a war. All of them were determined to please Rama." ||61.06||   

Here poet says that  all Vanaras  were anxious to fight a war. All of them determined to avenge Ravana's misdeeds. We hear similar comment by Vibhishana in Sarga 52 about Ravana's Rakshasas. There Vibhishana tells Ravana, that all the Rakshasa are ready for a war and that by killing Hanuma, he would be  depriving them of a chance for war.

ప్లవమానాః ఖమాప్లుత్య తతస్తే కాననౌకసః|

నందనోపమమాసేదుర్వనం  ద్రుమలతాయుతమ్||61.07||

హసన్తం అన్యః -  to the one who was laughing 

ప్రరుదన్ ఉపైతి - another went roaring

ప్రణుదన్  ఉపైతి-  another was pushing

నుదన్తం - one was encouraging

అన్యః ప్రణదన్ ఉపైతి- another fell over and was shouting

అత్ర కశ్చిత్ మత్తః న బభూవ ఇతి న - 

there was none who was not intoxicated

అత్ర కశ్చిత్ తృప్తః బభూవ ఇతి  న - 

there was none who was satisfied

"Having lost control due to excessive drinking , the Vanara army raised a cacophony. There was none who was not intoxicated. There was none who was satisfied." ||61.18||

తతో వనం తత్పరిభక్ష్యమాణమ్

 ద్రుమాంశ్చ విధ్వంసితపత్త్రపుష్పాన్|

సమీక్ష్య కోపాద్దధివక్త్రనామా

then Vanara by name Dadhivaktra 

విధ్వంసిత పత్రపుష్పాన్ ద్రుమాంశ్చ -

తత్ వనం  సమీక్ష్య -

 seeing that grove  

పరిభక్ష్యమాణమ్ తాన్ కపీన్ - 

those Vanaras who were drinking  

కోపాత్ నివారయామాస - 

with anger started stopping them

"Seeing the leaves, flowers and trees which were destroyed, and the Vanaras who were drunk, being angered Vanara by name Dadhimukha started stopping them."||61.19||

రామ టీకాలో - అప్రతివార్యాః వేగాః యేషాం తైః అత ఏవ తేన రక్షకేణ అప్రతివార్యమాణైః  త్యక్త భయైః తైః వానరైః ఉద్ధర్షణే రక్షక పరాభవే దోషం  రాజదణ్డం అనవేక్ష్య అపరిగణ్య సమేత్య ఏకీభూయ స రక్షకః బలాత్ ప్రకృష్యతే పుచ్ఛాది గ్రహణేన ఇతసతతో నీయతే||

స|| సమగ్రాః కపయః మదాత్ నఖైః తుదన్తః | దశనైః దసన్తః| తలైశ్చ పాదైశ్చ తం కపిం సమాపయన్తః | (తే సర్వే)  మహావనం నిర్విషయం చకృః||

Tilaka Tika says- సమాపయన్తః మృతకల్పం కుర్వన్తః। నిర్విషయం నిర్గత మధు ఫలాది భోజ్యమ్।

సమగ్రాః కపయః మదాత్ - 

drunk, all the Vanaras together 

నఖైః తుదన్తః  దశనైః దసన్తః - 

scratched with their nails. Bit with their teeth.

తలైశ్చ పాదైశ్చ తం కపిం సమాపయన్తః - 

almost killed the Vanara with their hands and feet

మహావనం - that great garden 

(తే సర్వే)  నిర్విషయం చకృః- ( all of them) looted fully

"Drunk, they all together scratched with their nails. Bit with their teeth. They almost killed the Vanara with their hands and feet. They looted the garden completely." ||61.23|| 

Without realizing their fault, some roared, some held and pulled Dadhimukha. The drunk Vanara's scratched with their nails and bit with their teeth. They kicked with their hands and feet. They looted the garden completely without a thought.

In Sarga 55, we heard about consequences of uncontrolled anger.

Here we have a demonstration of a similar uncontrolled mental state.

Being drunk, actions preventing them spark further destruction.

Thus ends Sarga sixty-one of Sundarakanda.
