Slokas 252-253 with meanings in English

Vivekachudamani Slokas 252 -253
Here Guru is again elaborating on Brahman
After the disciple has been told , तत् त्वम्
असि - 'that thou art' - the disciple should
get that 'aha' moment of realizing - अहं
ब्रह्मास्मि- 'I am that Brahman' - It is in that
direction Guru tries to elaborate on Brahman and
exhort him to think about that in his mind.
While we read the Slokas we must remember that Self
and Brahman are same, and proceed.
Here Guru starts with a Upanishadic conversation of
Guru Uddalaka a with his disciple Swetaketu.
Uddalaka tells Swetaketu about Brahman as :
"अस्थूलम् अनण्वन् अह्रस्रम् अदीर्घम्" - that Self is
"not gross, not small, nor short or long". Guru
starts the sloka 252 referring to that upanishadic
line.
Sloka 252:
अस्थूलम् इत्येतत् असन्निरस्य
सिद्धं स्वतोव्योमवदप्रतर्क्यम्।
यतो मृषामात्र मिदं प्रतीतम्
जहीहियत्स्वात्मतया गृहीतम्।
ब्रह्महमित्येव विशुद्ध बुध्या
विद्धि स्वमात्मानम् अखण्ड बोधम् ॥
This is a three line sloka- we willl go in sequence
1 अस्थूलम् इत्येतत् असन्निरस्य
सिद्धं स्वतोव्योमवदप्रतर्क्यम्।
अस्थूलम् इत्येतत् -
with scriptural texts like 'not gross' etc
असत् निरस्य - rejecting the unreal
Guru is reminding disciple about the line in Srutis,
which reads as - अस्थूलम् अनण्वन् अह्रस्वम्
अदीर्घम् - 'Self is not gross, not small( atom), not
short , nor long' ; Reminding disciple about this
line , points out the main purpose of that line.
In elaborating Self , all those have been rejected.
सिद्धं स्वतोव्योमवदप्रतर्क्यम् -
सिद्धं स्वतः - being established as the witness of
all rejections
व्योमवत् अप्रतर्क्यम् - impossible to be reasoned
like sky
The gross descriptions of Self are rejected,
rejecting the same as Self, which is
impossible to be reasoned like sky has been
established.
Using the Sruti exhortation about Self, the gross
body has been rejected and the Self has been
established, like sky cannot be disputed by any
arguments.
2 यतो मृषामात्र मिदं प्रतीतम्
जहीहियत्स्वात्मतया गृहीतम्।
यतो मृषामात्र मिदं प्रतीतम्-
That ( gross body) which by virtue of Mithya
has been known as Self;
जहीहियत्स्वात्मतया गृहीतम् -
जहीहि यत् स्वात्मतया गृहीतम्-
discard that which has been taken as Self
Guru is saying: " That ( gross body) which by
virtue of Mithya has been known as Self; discard
that misconception;
Guru is emphatic - discard that Gross !
After discarding , then what ? Guru answers that.
3 ब्रह्महमित्येव विशुद्ध बुध्या
विद्धि स्वमात्मानम् अखण्ड बोधम् ॥
"with a purified understanding of I am Brahman,
realise your own self which is Knowledge absolute"
ब्रह्म अहम् इति एवम् -
with a understanding of I am Brahman
विशुद्ध बुद्ध्या -
with intellect sharpened by reflection and
meditation;
स्वमात्मानम् अखण्ड बोधम् विद्धि -
know your Self to be limitless intelligence;
ब्रह्म अहम् इति एवम् -
I am that brahman;
Guru says that -
"That ( gross body) which by virtue of Mithya
has been known as Self, discard that; with an
understanding of I am Brahman,
with intellect sharpened by reflection and
meditation, know your Self to be Knowledge absolute
.
Summary fo the Sloka:
"Using the Sruti exhortation about Self, the gross
body has been rejected and the Self which is
indeterminable like Sky has been established".
"That ( gross body) which by virtue of Mithya
has been known as Self, discard that; with an
understanding of I am Brahman,
with intellect sharpened by reflection and
meditation, know your Self to be Knowledge
absolute."
Thus Guru is exhorting teh disciple to realise his
Self to be Knowledge absolute.
Sloka 253
मृत्कार्यं सकलं घटादि सततम् मृन्मात्रमेवाहितम्
तद्वत् सज्जनितं सदात्मकमिदं
सन्मात्रमेवाखिलम्।
यस्मान्नास्ति सतः परं किमपि तत् सत्यं स आत्मा स्वयं
तस्मात् तत्त्वमसि प्रशान्तममलं ब्रह्माद्वयं यत्परम्॥
1 मृत्कार्यं सकलं घटादि सततम् मृन्मात्रमेवाहितम्
मृत्कार्यं सकलं -
all that which has been effected out of clay
घटादि सततम् - pot etc always
मृन्मात्रमेवाहितम् -
nothing other than clay only
All that which has been effected out of clay, namely
the variety of pots etc, always remai as clay only.
2 तद्वत् सज्जनितं सदात्मकमिदं
सन्मात्रमेव अखिलम्
तद्वत् सज्जनितं -
so too this Universe , that which was born of "Sat"
सदात्मकमिदंआखिलम् - it is of the nature of that
"Sat"
सन्मात्रमेव - will always be of that "Sat" only
So too this Universe , that which was born of "Sat",
it is of the nature of that "Sat", and will
always be of that "Sat" only.
That which is born of "Sat" , will be of the nature
of "Sat" and will be "Sat" only. Sat is which
does not change in all three times.
This can be restated in terms of the discussion on
Brahman.
Just as in case of Clay, that which is born of
Brahman, will be othe nature of Brahman and will be
Brahman only.
This is also a known fact from earlier discussions.
3 यस्मान्नास्ति सतः परं किमपि तत् सत्यं स आत्मा
स्वयं
यस्मात् सतः परं नास्ति किमपि
because that there is nothing other than reality
तत् सत्यं - that truth
स आत्मा स्वयं - that is your Self only
Because that there is nothing other than reality,
that truth is your Self only
4 तस्मात् तत्त्वमसि प्रशान्तममलं ब्रह्माद्वयं
यत्परम्
तस्मात् - hence
तत् - that
प्रशान्तं अमलं - which is peaceful , untouched by
taint of ignorance
यत् परं - that Supreme
अद्वयम् ब्रह्मम् - brahman with a second
त्वं असि - that Supreme
अद्वयम् ब्रह्मम् - brahman with a second you
are।
Hence that which is peaceful , untouched by taint of
ignorance, that Supreme Brahman with a second, that
Supreme Brahman with a second is you only.
Summary of the Sloka 253:
All that which has been effected out of clay, namely
pot etc always nothing other than clay only; So too
this Universe , that which was born of "Sat", it is
of the nature of that "Sat", and will always
be of that "Sat" only.
Because that there is nothing other than reality,
that truth is your Self only. Hence that which is
peaceful, untouched by taint of ignorance, that
Supreme Brahman without a second, is you only.
