256-257
Sloka 256:
यत्परं सकलवागगोचरम्
गोचरं विमलबोध चक्षुषः।
शुद्ध चिद्घनमनादि वस्तु यद्
ब्रह्मतत्त्वमसि भावयात्मनि॥
यत्परं सकलवाक् अगोचरम्-
that which is supreme, beyond the reach of all
speech
गोचरं विमलबोध चक्षुषः -
विमलबोध चक्षुषः गोचरं -
seen by that eye of wisdom, which is free of
defects;
शुद्ध चिद्घनमनादि वस्तु यद्-
शुद्ध चिद्घनं अनादि वस्तुः यत् ( ब्रह्मम्) -
that chit which does not refer to sense objects,
that being which is without a begining;
तत्त्वमसि भावयात्मनि-
तत् त्वं असि आत्मनि भावय
meditate on that, that thou art, in your mind;
Summary of Sloka 256:
That which is supreme, beyond the reach of all
speech; that which is seen by that eye of wisdom,
which is free of defects; that chit which does
not refer to sense objects, that being which is
without a begining; Meditate on that, that thou
art, in your mind;
That which is supreme, beyond the reach of all
speech; that which is seen only by that eye of
wisdom, which is free of defects; These are all
desciptions, we head from Vedas. "यतो वाचा
निवर्तन्ते" is an oft heard statement of Vedas.
Brahman is beyond speech and cannot be comprehended
by naked eye. That chit which does not refer to
sense objects, is that mind which does not run after
sense objects. Only such a mind can comprehend
the true nature of Brahman. That is the
summary of the Sloka .
Here, Guru having told the disciple that तत्
त्वम् असि, that you are that Brahman, now elaborates
on that 'तत्' ; In the next few Slokas Guru
elaborates on that Brahman.
Sloka 257:
षड्भिरूर्मिभिः अयोगि योगिहृत्
भावितं न करणैः विभावितम्।
बुद्ध्यवेद्यमनवद्यभूति यद्
ब्रह्म तत्त्वमसि भावयात्मनि॥
षड्भिः ऊर्मिभिः अयोगि -
that which is not affected by the six waves
योगिहृत् भावितं -
that which is meditated on in the minds of Yogis
न करणैः विभावितम् -
that which cannot be apprehended by the
senses-organs;
बुद्ध्या अवेद्यम् -
that which is unknowable by the intellect
अनवद्यभूति यद् ब्रह्मम् -
that which is of flawless excellences
तत्त्वमसि भावयात्मनि -
'thou are that' , meditate on that in your mind;
Summary:
"That which is not affected by the six waves ; that
which is meditated on in the minds of Yogis ; that
which cannot be apprehended by the senses-organs;
that which is unknowable by the intellect ; that
which is of flawless excellences ; 'thou are that' ,
meditate on that in your mind";
The six waves, referred to by the Guru, are the
hunger, thirst, grief, delusion, old age and death;
The self is un affceted by these six. That
Brahman/Self is meditated on by the Yogis . That
Brahman - Self is beyond sense organs which means
that that it cannot be comprehended by speech,
beyond recognition by eye, beyond touch, beyond
being able to be grasped by anything. But it is
grasped by the eye of wisdom.
When guru said - बुद्ध्या अवेद्यम् -
unknowable by the intellect. he is referring to the
intellect devoid of discrimination. Only an
intellect sharpened by the ability of discrimination
can recognize the Brahman. .
