Viveka Chudamani slokas  274-275 :

In Sloka 271 it was said relinquishing the habit of following the world; relinquishing the habit of pandering to the body; relinquishing the habit of following literal words of scriptures; one must destroy the super-imposition of ignorance on the Self.

Clearly, the obstacles for realizing the self are these three, namely, the habit of following the world;  the habit of pandering to the body; the habit of following literal words of scriptures leading to running after fruits. These are to be destroyed !

So, the wise men say that the one who is free from these three obstacles which are sources of mental disturbance,  will atain true liberation

In Slokas 274 -275 Guru lays out a simile establishing that point.

That simile is about a sandalwood piece convered with contaminated smells due to water. Only when the contamination is fully rubbed off and the Sandal wood is free of that contamination , one can smell the celstial smells of that Sandalwood again. Similar is the case of a man caught in the web of the  past imprerssions, which too need to be scrubbed of.

Sloka 274:

due to contact with (contaminated) water etc
hidden by too much stink;
the celstial smells of Sandal wood,

Master is talking about the celstial smells of Sandal wood, hidden by too much stink, due to prolonged contact with contaminated) water;

Those dirty smells can be got rid off only by scrubbing of the Sandle wood, to make it free of the same. Guru complete s that thought in the next line

that is ,

scrubbing the external smells

thus removed

will shine (have the original celestial smell

Only after being scrubbed of all the dirty smells,  then the original celestial smells of Sandalwood can be enjoyed.

Summary of Sloka 274:

The celstial smells of Sandal wood, hidden by too much stink, due to prolonged contact with contaminated water, can be enjoyed,  only after being scrubbed of all the dirty smells.

In the earlier Slokas Guru stated that the past impressions stand in the way man attaining true liberation. Those are to be scrubbed off literally.

The same point is made with the help of an example of a Sandal wood. Just as the dirt covering a Sandal woood has to be scrubbed off  to smell the celestials smells of the Sandal wood- similaly - the past impressions, which stand in the way of achieving true liberation, need to be scrubbed off the mind of the Jiva to focus on true self.

Guru completes the discussion of example in Sloka 275

Sloka  275:

deeply ingrained unending past impressions;

that are covering the fragrance of Supreme being( Self);

by continuous scrounging with knowledge;

( fragrance of teh Self) shines clearly like the fragrance of the Sandalwood;

So, Matser is saying  that the fragrance of Supreme being covered by the deeply ingrained unending past impressions,
will be experienced, only by the continuous scrounging of the past impressions with knowledge; much like the celestial Sandalwood smells can be experienced only after is scrubbed off the dirsty smells covering the same.

Summary of Sloka 275 :

By continuous scrounging of the deeply ingrained unending past impressions with the knowledge, the fragrance of Supreme being( Self),  can be experienced clearly.
