Viveka Chudamani Slokas 305-307:
Guru continues his discourse on Ego in three more
Slokas.
Sloka 305
Through the complete cessation of egoism;
through stoppage of the diverse mental waves due to
it;
When the ego is rid of, then all the diverse mental
formulations too disappear. Like cause and effect,
when the cause disappears the effects also
disappear. That is the way it is.
through the discrimination of inner reality
one realizes that Reality as "I am this"
When the Ego is destroyed , through the
discrimination of inner reality, one ralises that "I
am this", that he is that reality
Summary of Sloka 305 :
Through the complete cessation of egoism, through
stoppage of the diverse mental waves due to it, and
through the discrimination of inner reality , one
realizes that Reality as "I am this".
Only by complete cessation of Ego and its activities
, the effects of Ego will be stopped. Once the
cause disappears , so will the effects be. Stoppage
of that mental activity enables the discrimination
to shine and realize "I am that reality".
Sloka 306
that ego which says 'I am the doer'
that thinking should be given up immediately
Give up immediately the identification with ego,
Which says "I am the doer'
Why should we give up identification with Self? Guru
answers that with three pointers.
which by its nature is modification (Ego's nature is
ever changing);
Ego is false notion of I super imposed in Self. It
is not real.
which is lit up only by a reflection of the Self;
Ego shines as though it is the "Self', in the
reflected glory of Self
which diverts one from being established in Self;
Ego diverts one from seeing the real Self.
Because its nature is changing, lit by only a
reflection of the Self and distracting one from his
own Self , one must give up that ego sense.
due to the identification with ego
Because of one's identification with ego - he is in
the world of happiness , sorrow , birth and death.
reached the state which is full of miseries of birth
and death
Due to identification with ego or put in another way
due to superimposition of Ego on the Self - we reach
that stage of life which is full of miseries of
birth and death.
One who should be enjoying the glory of
sat-chit-anand, is struggling in the ocean of
samsara only because of ego. Guru completes the
Sloka with the same thought
for the inner self for the one who is essence of
knowledge, for you the embodiment of bliss absolute
;
this Samsara ( this stage of life which is full of
miseries of birth and death).
Guru is essentially saying for you who should be
enjoying liberation , you are in this Samsara
because of identification with Ego.
Summary of Sloka 306 :
Give up immediately the identification with ego,
which by its nature is a modification,
which is endues with a reflection of the Self, and
which diverts one from being established in
Self; identifying yourself with Ego ,
you have come to this existence full of
miseries of birth and death, though you are the
witness, the essence of knowledge and Bliss
absolute.
Sloka 307
you are eternally the same form, knowledge absolute,
and omnipresent;
the Bliss absolute, and of untarnished glory.
for you who is immutable
there can never be other way (no transmigration)
For you who is immutable there can never be
transmigration ( birth and death) but for the
identification with ego.
but for the identification with ego
there could never be transmigration for you
Summary of Sloka 307 :
"For one of eternally the same form, knowledge
absolute, and omnipresent, the Bliss absolute, and
of untarnished glory, there could never be
transmigration, but for the identification with
ego."
