Viveka Chudamani Slokas 308-310:

Guru continues is dialogue on the Ego in the next three Slokas.


Sloka 308

तस्मात् अहंकारं इमं स्वशत्रुं
भोक्तुर्गळे कटवत् प्रतीतम्।
विच्छिद्य विज्ञान महासिना स्फुटम्
भुङ्क्षात्व साम्राज्य सुखं यथेष्ठं॥308॥

1 तस्मात् अहंकारं इमं स्वशत्रुं -
  Therefore this Ego which is your own enemy


2 भोक्तुर्गळे कटवत् प्रतीतम्। -
   appears like a thorn in eater's throat; 

The ego which is the enemy and Guru compares that ego to thorn stuck in your throat . The answer is immediate, remove that thorn and throw it away .

3 विच्छिद्य विज्ञान महासिना स्फुटम्
   uprooting it with sharp sword of knowledge;

Uprooting the thorn, removes the pain , brings back the joy in eating or the eater. For Ego to be uprooted , the sword required is knowledge. With sword of knowledge destroy the ego.
 
4 भुङ्क्ष्वात्म साम्राज्य सुखं यथेष्ठं
 आत्म साम्राज्य सुखं यथेष्ठं भुंक्ष्व  -
 enjoy the bliss of your own kingdom;

अहंकारमनेबडे मुल्लुनि तीसेस्ते निरंतर अखंड आनंदमुनु यथेच्छगा अनुभविंचुमु अनि गुरु उपदेशमु.

Summary of Sloka 308 :

Therefore this Ego, which is your own enemy which appears like a thorn in eater's throat, uprooting it with sharp sword of knowledge, enjoy the bliss of your own kingdom.

Sloka 309

ततोऽहमादेः विनिवृत्य वृत्तिम्
संत्यक्त रागः परमार्थलाभात्।
तूष्णीं समास्वात्म सुखानुभूत्वा
पूर्णात्मना ब्रह्मणि निर्विकल्पः॥309॥

1 ततोऽहमादेः विनिवृत्य वृत्तिम् -
there fore turning your mind away from ego etc ;

2 संत्यक्त रागः परमार्थलाभात्।
giving up attachment through the experience of Supreme Reality; 

3 तूष्णीं समास्व  आत्म सुखानुभूत्वा
remain quiet in the enjoyment of the bliss of Atman;


Renmain quiet is being free from action.
 

4 पूर्णात्मना ब्रह्मणि निर्विकल्पः -
Being the infinite Self remain in Brahman free from chnages (duality);
 
Summary of Sloka 309:

"There fore turning your mind away from ego etc, giving up attachment through the experience of Supreme Reality, remain quiet in the enjoyment of the bliss of Atman. Being the infinite Self remain in Brahman free from changes (duality)".



Sloka 310:

स मूल कृत्तोपि  महानहं पुनः
वुल्लेखितः स्यात् यदि चेतसा क्षणं
संजीव्य विक्षेप शतं करोति
न भस्वता प्रावृषि वारिदो यथा॥310॥

1 स मूल कृत्तोपि  महानहं पुनः -
Though it is rooted out fuly , this great ego;

The Ego is very powerful. Why? Though it is removed fully, given a chance it will sprout again. So You have to be always be alert.


2 वुल्लेखितः स्यात् यदि चेतसा क्षणं-
if revived by mind even for a moment
 

Though removed fully, if the mind revives it even for a moment, it will make roaring come back.

3 संजीव्य विक्षेप शतं करोति -
  returning to life it can create hundreds of distractions;

4 नभस्वता प्रावृषि वारिदो यथा-
  like the clouds, though dispersed, brought together by wind in the rainy season;   


 Summary of Sloka 310:

"Though it is rooted out fuly , this great ego;if revived by mind even for a moment , returning to life it can create hundreds of distractions, like the clouds, though dispersed, brought together by wind in the rainy season".
