!! Viveka Chudamani of Shankaracharya !!
Slokas 330-332 with meanings in English
Vivekla Chudamani Slokas 330-332 :
Sloka 330 :
one who is established in Brahman while being alive;
such one continues to be established in Brahman even after the fall of the body;
One who is established in Brahman while being alive, continues to be established in Brahman even after death (the fall of the body).
Kaivalyam - means attaining the state of unity with Brahman.
for the one who sees a difference;
Yajurveda speak of fear;
For the one who sees even bit of difference - from that state of unity in Brahman or the state of seeing brahman in everything - what happens?
In the earlier slokas we heard a variant of this in terms of forgetfulness- one who suffers from forgetfulness of seeing Brahman every where falls from that path of Brahman.
Here Guru says,Yajurveda speaks of fear from that difference he sees - essentially the fear is the fall from that state of seeing Brahman in everything. Now Guru is taking Vedas as a reference and telling us that Vedas also speak the same thing he taught earlier. The seeing difference ('Bheda') tracks with forget fulness with the same results. We remember Guru said forgetfulness equals death . Thus seeing difference also is equivalent of death.
Sloka summary 330:
"One who is established in Brahman while being alive, continues to be established in Brahman even after the fall of the body. For the one who sees a difference, Yajurveda speak of fear resulting in fall from that state of Brahman."
Sloka 331:
If at any time the wiseman
sees a bit of difference in the infinite Brahman
If at any time the wiseman, sees a bit of difference in the infinite Brahman, what will happen?.
This tracks with the earlier Slokas where we see what happens for a wiseman who suffers forget fulness. There Guru concluded that it is equivalent of death (from that state of Brahman in every being)
Here , the argument tracks around seeing difference in state where we were to see no difference. When we are to see one Brahman everything, the seeing a difference, or seeing a second is equivalent to that of forgetfulness in the state of Brahman. So seeing difference results in a fall.
then at once to him becomes fear
that which was seen as a difference by mistake.
That which was seen as a difference by mistake, then at once to him becomes fear. The difference seen becomes a source of terror, because he is seeing a difference where he was expected to see one. The difference leads him towards that path of destruction or loss of Brahman.
Here , again Guru is bringing forth the support of Vedas. In Vedas it is said
Because of the second fear happens.
Sloka summary 331 : "Whenever the wiseman sees the least difference in the infinite Brahman, then at once that which he sees as a difference through mistake, becomes source of fear."
Sloka 332 :
That which has been denied by Shrutis, Smrutis and hundreds of other documents;
What is that which is denied by Shrutis, Smrutis etc?. That is about Self or Atman, which is mistakenly throught to be the body or ego. Shrutis and Struts emphatically deny that body is Atman.
he who identifies with the visible world here
Experiences misery after misery;
Like a thief who does something that is forbidden
Sloka summary 332 :
"He who identifies with the visible world here,which has been denied by Shrutis, Smrutis and hundreds of other documents, experiences misery after misery Like a thief who does something that is forbidden."
॥om tat sat॥
