Slokas 381-383 with meanings in English

 
Viveka Chudamani Slokas 381-383:

Having taught the way for meditation in Sloka 379, Guru focusses on the goal of meditation as Self, and elaborates on Self in Slokas 381-383.


Sloka 381

ఏష స్వయం జ్యోతిః అశేష సాక్షి
విజ్ఞానకోశే విలసత్యజస్రమ్।
లక్ష్యం విథాయైనమసద్విలక్షణమ్
అఖణ్డవృత్యాఽఽత్మ తయానుభావయ॥381॥

1 ఏష స్వయం జ్యోతిః అశేష సాక్షి -
this Self is self-effulgent, and is the witness of all;
 
2 విజ్ఞానకోశే విలసత్యజస్రమ్ -
It has intellect as its seat and shines externally
  

This Self is self-effulgent, and is the witness of all; It has intellect as its seat and shines externally;

3 లక్ష్యం విథాయైనమసద్విలక్షణమ్ -
లక్ష్యం విధాయ ఏనం అసత్ విలక్షణమ్- making that Self, which is distinct from all that is unreal, as the goal;

Gurus is exhorting the disciple to make that Self, which is distinct from all that is unreal, as the goal. Then what happens?

4 అఖణ్డవృత్యా ఆత్మతయా అనుభావయ - with an unbroken stream of thought on your Self, meditate:


Summary of Sloka 381:

This Self is self-effulgent, and is the witness of all; It has intellect as its seat and shines externally; Making that Self, which is distinct from all that is unreal, as the goal; meditate with an unbroken stream of thought on your Self,


Sloka 382

ఏతమచ్ఛిన్నయావృత్యా
ప్రత్యయాంతరశూన్యయా।
ఉల్లేఖయన్ విజానీయాత్
స్వస్వరూపతయా స్ఫుటమ్॥382॥

1 ప్రత్యయాంతరశూన్యయా -
with no intervention of any other thought;
2 ఏతమచ్ఛిన్నయావృత్యా -
holding continuously the thought of this Atman;
3 ఉల్లేఖయన్  -  contemplating;
4 విజానీయాత్ స్వస్వరూపతయా స్ఫుటమ్ -
one should realise it clearly as one's own real Self;


Summary fo Sloka 382:

One should realise this as one's own real nature, contemplating  on it continuously without any interfering thought.


Sloka  383

అత్రాత్మత్వం దృఢీకుర్వన్ 
అహమాదిషుసంత్యజన్।
ఉదాసీనతయా తేషు తిష్ఠేత్
ఘటవటాది పటవత్॥383॥

1 అత్రాత్మత్వం దృఢీకుర్వన్   -
అత్ర ఆత్మత్వం దృఢీకుర్వన్ - confirming the sense of Atman


2 అహమాదిషుసంత్యజన్ -
అహం ఆదిషు సంత్యజన్-
abandoning the sense of ego etc;

3 ఉదాసీనతయా తేషు తిష్ఠేత్ -
one should remain indifferent (to ego etc);

By strengthening one's identification with Self and renouncing all identification with ego etc, one must live being indifferent to them.

One has to be indifferent to them,  as one is indifferent to a broken pot etc

4 ఘటవటాది పటవత్-
as in the case of a pot cloth etc;


Summary of Sloka 383:

Confirming the sense of Atman, abandoning the ego etc  with a sense of indifference as in the case of a pot , cloth etc;
