Slokas 414-416 with meanings in English

 
    Viveka Chudamani Slokas  414-416

The one who has realized Self, realizes the gross body as vehicle meant to experience the good and bad of the past actions. The realized man also realizes that further entanglements continues the cycle of birth again and again. So he would reject the entanglements of gross body. In Sloka 414 Guru elaborates on the same. 

Sloka 414:

ఛాయేవ పుంసః పరిదృశ్యమానమ్
అభాసరూపేణ ఫలానుభూత్యా।
శరీరమారాత్ శవవత్  నిరస్తమ్
పునర్నసన్ధత్త ఇదం మహాత్మా॥

1 ఛాయేవ పుంసః పరిదృశ్యమానమ్ -
like the shadow of man which is being seen;

2 అభాసరూపేణ ఫలానుభూత్యా -
as an appearance owing to the effects of past actions ;

The realized man knows that body is here because of the results of past actions.  For the one who has realized Self, it is clear that body is in this world to experience the results of the past actions. He would want it to be that only and avoid further entanglements. So he would look at the body with a sense of detachment that ensures no rebirth. The unrealized man gets entangle in further attachments and is lost to the cycle of birth and death.

3 శరీరమారాత్ శశవత్  నిరస్తమ్ -
the body is thrown far away like a corpse;

The body, which is like the shadow of a man, is seen as an appearance due to past actions by the realized man and is thrown away like a corpse.

4 పునర్నసన్ధత్త ఇదం మహాత్మా -
the one who has realized (Self) has no attachment.


 Sloka with summary:

The one who has realized, because of his realization does not attach himself to the gross body , which is visible as the shadow of the man , rejects the gross-body like a corpse , (or does not  try to resurrect the attachments).


Sloka 415

సతతవిమలబోధానన్దరూపం స్వమేత్య
త్యజ జడమలరూపోపాధిమేతం సుదూరే।
అథ పునరపి నైవస్మర్యతాం వాన్తవస్తు
స్మరణ విషయభూతం కల్పతే కుత్సనాయ॥

1 సతత విమలబోధానన్దరూపం స్వం ఏత్య;
having realized the the eternal pure knowledge and bliss,

నిత్య నిర్మల బోధానన్ద రూపము అంటే బ్రహ్మత్వము, అ బ్రహ్మత్వము స్వయముగా పొందినవాడు తన పూర్వ స్వరూపము ( స్థూల శరీరము) వదిలేయాలి మళ్ళీ అలోచించకుండా. ఆపూర్వ శరీరము ఎలాంటి ది అంటే, అది జడరూపము , అశుద్ధము అయిన శరీరము. అదే రెందవపాదములో వింటాము  

2 త్యజ జడ అమలరూప ఉపాధిం ఏతం సుదూరే:
throw far away the this limitation of a body ( ఉపాధిం)  which is inert and filthy ( impure) by nature;

Throw it far away so that you do not want to remember it , like you do not want to remember  a bad thing

3 అథ పునరపి న ఏవ స్మర్యతాం -
not recall it again;

Guru does not stop with the instruction -"not recall it again" - he adds an example which will make one sure not to recall.The example comes in the last line

4 వాన్తవస్తు స్మరణ విషయభూతం కల్పతే కుత్సనాయ - 
for some thing that is vomitted excites nothing but disgust when recalled;

Sloka 415 with summary:

Realizing the Atman, the eternal pure knowledge and bliss, throw far away (సుదూరే త్యజ) this limitation of a body (ఉపాధి), which is inert and filthy ( impure) by nature. Then no more remember it.  Something that is vomitted excites nothing but disgust when recalled.

Sloka 416

సమూలమేతం పరిదహ్య వహ్నౌ
సదాత్మని బ్రహ్మణి నిర్వికల్పే।
తతః స్వయం నిత్య విశుద్ధబోధా
నన్దాత్మనా తిష్ఠతి విద్వరిష్టః॥

1 సమూలం ఏతం పరిదహ్య వహ్నౌ -
Burning all this along with its root in the fire ( of Brahman) ;

"ఏతం" or "this" refers to the ignorance about non-Self namely the gross body. This along with its roots namely ignorance shall be burnt in the fire. That fire is the fire of knowledge , the knowledge of Self or Brahman and this Guru elaborates in the next line. 

2 సదాత్మని బ్రహ్మణి నిర్వికల్పే -
 in the Brahman, the unchanging, eternal pure knowledge and Bliss;

The ignorance in the form of attachment to gross body is to be burned with its roots in the fire of knowledge  of Brahman , the unchanging, eternal pure knowledge and Bliss. 

The process of burning all "this" along with its roots in the fire ( of Brahman) is itself realization of Brahman or Self. Once you burn "that", one will be experiencing the unchanging, eternal pure knowledge and Bliss of Brahman. Giri says that in the next line.

3 తతః స్వయం నిత్య విశుద్ధబోధానన్ద ఆత్మనా -
then  in that pure eternal bliss of knowledge of Self ;
 
4 తిష్ఠతి విద్వరిష్టః -
the best among Pandits stays alone;


Sloka with summary 416

Burning all this along with its root  in the fire of Brahman, the eternal absolute Self, the truly wise man remain alone as Atman the eternal pure knowledge and Bliss
