Sundarakanda

Sarga 59


 The fifty eighth Sarga ended with the line.

"atra yan akr̥taṁ śēṣaṁ tatsarvaṁ kriyatām iti"

"Whatever is left to be done, that is to be completed"


This Sarga starts with the line,

ētadākhyāya tat sarvaṁ hanumān mārutātmajaḥ|

bhūyaḥ paricakrāma vacanaṁ vaktumuttaram||


"ētadākhyāya tat sarvaṁ"(59.1), 

means "having told all that".

All that is about what happened in Lanka.

That also included the concluding prayer 

to decide about actions left to be accomplished. Hanuma starts to tell again 


That means apparently there is something more,

Hanuma wants to say that now.


He says"sa phalō rāghavōdyōgaḥ" (59.2) - Rama's purpose has been fulfilled. But there is something more.


Hanuma says "śīlamāsādya sītāyāḥ"observing Sita's devotion to Rama,"mama ca pravaṇaṁ manaḥ"; "my mind is filled with devotion!


The search for Sita, is part of an agreement. Rama delivered Vanaras their kingdom. And Vanaras went in search of Sita, who is the wife of Rama.  It is a simple equation and as per agreement.


Hanuman also says that in his message to Ravana.

"tasya sāhāyya masmābhiḥ kāryaṁ sarvātmana tviha"(58.137)

Helping Rama is the Vanara's duty.


In fact, in Kishkindha Kanda seeing Rama in separation Hanuma wondered why Rama is in such distress over a lady. Then after seeing Sita first time, Hanuma’s respect for Rama grows.


Observing Sita's sorrows, hearing her words Hanuma's respect for Sita grows more and more .We hear Hanuma talking about her devotion to Rama. We hear him talking about her powers of penance, which are greater than even flaming fire. Sita could have destroyed Ravana if she wished to.


Now we see the respect for Sita, transform into devotion. Hanuma's mind is filled with devotion. "mama ca pravaṇaṁ manaḥ"


This transformation of Hanuma is also the story of Sundarakanda.


As we continue to hear Hanuma, we see once more the other side of Ravana. That is about the power of penance of Ravana.


Govindaraja in his commentary writes as follows.

||gō.ṭi|| tapasyētyādinā|| tapasā ati pravr̥ddhaḥ iti anvayaḥ|

 kōpaprāsādābhyāṁ sarvalōkanigraha anugraha sāmarthyaḥ |

asau rāvaṇaḥ sarvathāmahātapaḥ saṁpannaḥ|

ata ēva  sītāsparśē’pi na vināśita ityarthaḥ||


Ravana reached great heights by penance.

With anger and ability to please, he had the ability to control the three worlds. This Ravana is rich with power of penance. That is why though he touched Sita he was not burnt to ashes, says Govindaraja 


That power of penance is the only reason, Ravana was not destroyed by touching Sita during abduction. Indirectly this also says as much about the greater power of Sita, who could have turned Ravana into ashes, if she so wished.


The lines about Ravana, highlighting his positives,

seem to be planted to tell us something.


The stark difference between Rama who followed the right path through all vicissitudes of life,

like a normal human being,  and Ravana who undeniably had great powers of penance but adhered to a path of convenience. These two paths are the same paths, described in Kathopanishad.

the path of good and the path of convenience.

Yama tells Nachiketa to follow the path of Good,

which is also Rama's path.


Having said all about Sita, including the dire straits, she is in, and listing all the Vanara warriors, who on their own can battle Lanka Hanuma says something unexpected.


"nyāyyaṁ sma saha vaidēhyā draṣṭhuṁ tau pārthivātmajau"| (59.5); "It is appropriate to meet the two brothers taking Sita along with us".


That was not Sita's wish. " tat tasya sadr̥śaṁ"  is the line Sita repeated many a time. Sita told that even in the last moment (Sarga 56)." tat tasya sadr̥śaṁ" means that,

Rama coming and taking Sita is the most appropriate.

She repeated several times starting from the thirty seventh Sarga.


So, saying "saha vaidēhyā draṣṭhuṁ tau" which means "along with Sita see the two brothers", means only one thing. 

That is that Hanuma totally forgot Sita's repeated requests


But having said that and 

having supported that thought,

detailing all the Vanara warriors 

who can accomplish this on their own,

reiterating that Sita must be rescued 

Hanuma ends by saying,

"tatsarvaṁ upapadyatām"

means "let all that is required to be done shall be done"


These are the final words of Hanuma, while debriefing the Vanaras. The possibilities left open include, bringing Sita back and then meeting Rama, ignoring Sita's request


One more thing


The first sloka in Jayamantram is, 

"jayatyati balō rāmō

lakṣmaṇaśca mahābalaḥ

rājā jayati sugrīvō

rāghavēṇādhipālitaḥ"||

 

This Sloka is repeated in this Sarga. Hanuma says, he announced loudly, that the victory of Rama is certain. In that context the Sloka is repeated. Whenever that Sloka is read/sung, we feel the energy of that Sloka.


With these thoughts on this Sarga, now we go through the Sarga, as narrated by Valmiki.

 ētadākhyāya tatsarvaṁ 

hanumān mārutātmajaḥ|

bhūyaḥ samupacakrāma

 vacanaṁ vaktu muttaram||59.01||


sa|| hanumān mārutātmajaḥ ētat sarvaṁ ākhyāya bhūyaḥ uttaraṁ vacanaṁ vaktuṁ samupacakramē||

saphalō rāghavōdyōgaḥ

 mama ca pravaṇaṁ manaḥ||59.02||


sa||rāghavōdyōgaḥ sugrīvasya saṁbhramaḥ saphalaḥ |  sītāyāḥ śīlaṁ āsādya  mama manaśca pravaṇaṁ||


Rama Tika says- sītāyāḥ śīlaṁ sad vrataṁ pātivratyamāsādya  dr̥ṣṭvā rāghavōdyōgādēḥ sāphalya jñānēna mama manaḥ prīṇitaṁ tuṣṭam|mama ca pravraṇaṁ manaḥ iti pāṭhēpravraṇaṁ saṁtōṣapravraṇaṁ ityarthaḥ|

"Rama's task, Sugriva's efforts have been successful. Seeing Sita's conduct my mind has developed devotion."||59.02||

tapasā dhārayēllōkān kruddhō vā nirdahēdapi|

sarvadhāti pravr̥ddhō’sau rāvaṇō rākṣasādhipaḥ||59.03||

tasya tāṁ spr̥śatō gātraṁ tapasā na vināśitam|


sa||asau rākṣasādhipaḥ tapasā dhārayēllōkān| vā kr̥ddhaḥ nirdahēt api |  sarvathā atipravr̥ddhaḥ ||tasya gātraṁ tām spr̥śataḥ  tapasā na vināśitaṁ |


Rama Tika says - tāṁ sītāṁ spr̥śataḥ apaharaṇāya sparśvaṁ kurvataḥ yasya rāvaṇaya gātraṁ pāṇiḥ tapasā sītātapōbalēna na vināśituṁ saḥ asau rāvaṇaḥ sarvathā sarvaprakārēṇa atiprakārēṇa atiprakr̥ṣṭaḥ pratibhāti iti śēṣaḥ , ētēnēdaṁ mahadāścaryaṁ iti sūcitaṁ ||

asau rākṣasādhipaḥ - this king of Rakshasas 

tapasā lōkān dhārayēt - 

with power of penance he can hold the world 

vā kr̥ddhaḥ nirdahēt api -

 or angry he could burn the same 

sarvathā atipravr̥ddhaḥ - 

he is very powerful 

tasya gātraṁ tām spr̥śataḥ -  

though he touched her limbs  

tapasā na vināśitaṁ - 

not burnt because of the power of his penance

"This king of Rakshasas can hold the world with power of penance or if angry he could burn the same too. He is very powerful. Though he touched her limbs ,not burnt because of the power of his penance".||59.03||  


So is Sita's power of penance not as powerful? Poet responds to the same.


||Sloka 59.04||


na tadagniśikhā kuryāt 

saṁspr̥ṣṭā pāṇinā satī||59.04||

janakasyātmajā kuryāt  

yatkrōdha kaluṣīkr̥tā|


sa|| saṁspr̥ṣṭā pāṇinā satī tat agniśikhā nakuryāt |  krōdhakaluṣīkr̥tā janakasya ātmajā a kuryāt || 


Tilaka Tika says  - naitāvat sītā śīlaṁ durbalaṁ iti śaṁkayā nēti| yat kr̥ddhā sītā kuryāt tat spr̥ṣṭā’gniśikhā api na kuryāt | iyaṁ tu bahrtuḥ parākramakīrtayē nādyāpi kr̥dhyatīti bhāvaḥ| akr̥ddhayā api sparśamātrēṇa prāptō nāśastu rāvaṇa  tapasā nivāritā iti dhyēyam|  


Govindaraja Tika says -tarhi sītā śīlaṁ durbalamasmākaṁ kimupakariṣyati ityāha - nēti| sītāśīlamēva balīyastvādupakariṣyati ityarthaḥ| krōtha kaluṣīkr̥tēti vacanāt bhartumukhēna vairaniryātanaṁ  vīra patnī dharmaḥ| anyathā mahālāghavaṁ bharturityādyāpi pāratantryapālanāya tādruk krōdhakāraṇāt rāvaṇōjīvatītti gamyatē| ētadēvō’ktaṁ prāk - asandēśāattu rāmasya tapaścānupālanāt | na tvāṁ kurmi daśagrīva bhasma bhasmārha tējasā iti|

What the enraged Janaka's daughter can do even the flame of fire cannot do. She did not do, since she wanted Rama to kill Ravana.||59.04||

jāmbavatpramukhān sarvān 

anujñāsya mahāharīn||59.05||

asminnēvaṁ gatē kāryē 

bhavatāṁ ca nivēditē|

nyāyaṁ sma sahavaidēhyā

 draṣṭuṁ tau pārthivātmajau||59.06||


sa||bhavatām nivēditē asmin kāryē ēvaṁ gatē jāṁbavat pramukhān  mahāharīn samanujñāya vaidēhyā saha tau pārthivātmajau draṣṭuṁ nyāyaṁ sma||


Rama Tika says - ēvam anēna prakārēṇa gatē siddhiṁprāptē asmin kāryē bhavān samīpē nivēditē satijāmbavat pramukhān kapīn anujñāpya  tadājñāṁ gr̥hītvā ityarthaḥ , vaidēhyāsaha pārthivātmajau draṣṭhuṁ nyāyyaṁ  asmakaṁ iti śēṣaḥ|


Govindaraja Tika says- ēvaṁ sthitē yuṣmat anumatyā bhr̥tyavijayaḥ api svāmin ēvaiti  kr̥tvā sītārāmapadāvalambāt ahamēva rāvaṇaṁ nirjitya sītāpuraskarēṇaiva rāghavō drakṣyāmi ityāha|

ahamēkōpi paryāptaḥ sarākṣasagaṇāṁ purī|

tāṁ laṁkāṁ tarasā hantuṁ rāvaṇaṁ ca mahābalam||59.07||

mayā’tulā visr̥ṣṭā hi śailavr̥ṣṭirnirantarā|

dēvānapi raṇē hanyāt kiṁ punaḥ tān niśācarān||59.12||


sa|| bhavatām abhyanujñātaḥ mē vikramaḥ taṁ ruṇāddhi| mayā visr̥ṣṭā atulā nirantarā śailavr̥ṣṭiḥ raṇē dēvān api hanyāt | tān niśācarān kiṁ punaḥ||


Govindaraja says - abhyanujñātaḥ  abhyanujñānāt  mē vikramaḥ taṁ rāvaṇam ruṇaddhi hantītyarthaḥ|

if you permit me

mē vikramaḥ taṁ ruṇāddhi -

 I will capture him with my valor

mayā - by me 

atulā nirantarā visr̥ṣṭā śailavr̥ṣṭiḥ - 

with ceaseless matchless shower of rocks

raṇē dēvān api hanyāt - 

even the Devas will die

tān niśācarān kiṁ punaḥ -  

what to speak of the night creatures?

"If you permit me,   I will shatter them with my valor. With ceaseless matchless shower of rocks in a war even the Devas will die, what to speak of the night creatures." ||59.11,12||


Hanuma now goes on to say that all others also have the capability to defeat Ravana.

sāgarō’pyatiyādvēlāṁ mandaraḥ pracalēdapi|

na jāmbavantaṁ samarē kampayē darivāhinī||59.13||


sa|| sāgaraṁ vēlāṁ atiyādapi mandaraḥ pracalēdapi samarē arivāhini jāmbavataṁ na kampayēt ||


Tilaka Tika says - idānīṁ sarvē’pi bhavantaḥ tat vadhē samarthā ityāha  sāgarō’pi ityādi||

sāgaraṁ vēlāṁ atiyādapi - 

ocean may exceed its limits

mandaraḥ pracalēdapi - 

mount Mandara may be shaken

samarē arivāhini - 

the enemy armies in the battle 

jāmbavataṁ na kampayēt - 

Jambavan cannot be shaken

"The ocean may exceed its limits, the mount Mandara may be shaken but Jambavan cannot be shaken in a war." ||59.13||

sarvarākṣasa saṁghānāṁ rākṣasā yē ca pūrvakā|

alamēkō vināśāya vīrō vālisutaḥ kapiḥ||59.14||


sa|| vīraḥ vālisutaḥ kapiḥ ēkaḥ sarvarākṣasaṁghānāṁ pūrvakāḥ yē vināśāya alam||


Tilaka Tika says - yē ca pūrvajā rākṣasāḥ tēṣāṁ nāśāyai ēkōpi samarthaḥ iti anvayaḥ||

heroic son of Vali alone

yē vināśāya alam - 

alone is enough to destroy

sarvarākṣasaṁghānāṁ pūrvakāḥ -

 all the Rakshasas led by him ( Ravana)

panasa syōruvēgēna nīlasya ca mahātmanaḥ|

mandarō’pyavasīryēta kiṁ punaryudhi rākṣasāḥ||59.15||


sa|| panasasya mahātmanaḥ nīlasya ūruvēgēna mandarō api avaśīryatē | yudhi rākṣasāḥ kim punaḥ||

sa||  varōtsēkēna mattau ca vīrau plavaṁgamau surāṇāṁ mahatīṁ camūṁ pramathya amr̥taṁ pītavantau ||

proud with those boons

vīrau plavaṁgamau - the two best of Vanaras

surāṇāṁ mahatīṁ camūṁ pramathya - 

having defeated vast armies of Suras

In the middle of the Ashoka grove of the evil minded Ravana, under the Simsupa tree , the pious lady surrounded by Rakshasa women, tormented by sorrow, without brightness looking like moon rays veiled by clouds, not caring for the glory of Ravana . is brooding over Rama only.||59.25,26||

Govindaraja Tika says - pativratā cētyādi| paulōmiva purandara iti nahuṣanirbandha iti bhāvaḥ|  - like Poulomi, imprisoned by Nahusha, thinking about Purandara  is the  implication;

Rama Tika says - saṁbhāṣitā ataēva sarvamarthaṁ prakāśitā prabuddhā sītā rāmasugrīva sakhyaṁ śrutvā prītimupāgatā prāptā|

Govindaraja Tika says- daśagrīvaṁ na hantīti yat tatra kāraṇam sa daśānanaḥ mahātmā mahānubhāvaḥ |śāpanibandhana durmaraṇābhāvaditi bhāvaḥ ataḥ tasta vadhē rāmastu rāma ēva nimittamātraṁ bhaviṣyati tathā tasyōtkarṣāt sītātu nimittakāraṇaṁ iti śēṣaḥ | bhartraiva vaira niryātanaṁ vīrapatnīdharmaḥ  anyathā bharturmahakallāghavamiti manīṣayā na svayaṁ hanti na tvasāmarthyāditi bhāvaḥ||

ten headed one who did harm 

mahātmā sā - 

great soul that he is

that he has not been killed yet

bhartari uttamā bhaktiḥ - 

high devotion to her husband

for the killing of Ravana 

rāmastu nimittamātraṁ bhaviṣyati -

emaciated due to separation from her husband

pratipatpāṭhaśīlasya vidyēva - 

like the students on the first day of studies

  tanumatāṁ gatā -  

she became more slender in the body

noble lady Sita 

astē ēvaṁ śōkaparāyaṇā - 

is thus absorbed in grief

now what action needs to be done

"The noble lady is thus absorbed in grief. What action needs to be done by all that is to be proposed."||59.36||


Hanuma's his final comment saying, “With great difficulty the doe eyed one has been given confidence. Then all things have been elaborated to her. The alliance of Rama and Sugriva gave her happiness. That the ten-headed one, though having done harm, is not killed, that is only because the disciplined lady's high devotion to her husband. Rama is there as the instrument of killing Ravana. The noble lady is thus absorbed in grief. Every action that needs to be done is to be proposed'.


With this extended comments Hanuma ends the speech he delivered in response to Jambavan's query asking him to tell what  happened during his search for Sita


Thus, Sarga fifty-nine too comes to an end
