In the tradition of conveying a complex subject through the use of a subtle parable the Kathopanishad starts with the story of a Rishi Vajasravas and his son Nachiketa.The dialog of Nachiketa with Lord Yama carries the message of the Upanishad.

Rishi Vajasravas performs 'Viswajit' sacrifice which involves giving away "all" his wealth. His son Nachiketa notices that his father is giving away gifts( cows) which are of no use. Very much concerned and trying to grab the attention of his father he asks his father to whom will he give 'Nachiketa' as he is part of his fathers wealth. Father being busy with the rituals and with without realizing says "to death". There upon to keep his fathers word Nachiketa moves to Yama's world. Yama was away when Nachiketa reaches the place. He waits for three nights till Yama returns. Alerted that a Brahman was waiting for him for three days without partaking anything as a guest , Yama offers him three boons for the three nights he waited. For the first boon Nachiketa wants to understand the Fire sacrifice and for the Second boon he wants that his Father be free of anxiety and be happy . Both the boons being granted Nachiketa asks for the third boon the knowledge about "here after". Nachiketa says that some say there is life after death some say not and he wants to know what happens after death. Yama tries to dissuade him with all sorts of worldly boons. Nachiketa could not be deterred. Yama tells him even Devas do not know, it is too difficult to understand . Nachiketa still insists on the knowledge then Yama relents.

After testing Nachiketa's determination , Yama starts his teaching.

He starts by teaching importance of "Om" the two letter word . After extolling the efficacy of "om" , Yama teaches about Self .

Yama also answers the question what happens after death saying Jivas who understood the Atman get liberated others go to different lives based on their karma. . He says they go from death to death meaning that they continue in the cycle of birth and death !

Welcome to Kasarabada.org !

This week included a Guru Purnima on 3rd July, so all our pages reflect some thougts on Gurus

After two years there are again new beginnings in Ramayanam , and "Bhagavatam". In Ramayanam we are starting Sundarakanda . The 68 Cantos of Sundarakanda are planned to be completed in 68 weeks . "Ramayanam" page has more details !!.

Bhagavatam will start with Eleventh Skandha , or more specifically Uddhava Gita , the Last message of Krishna. Bhagavatam also carries a story on 24 Gurus from Bhagavatam 11th Skandha. This is a story elaborated by Avadhuta in response to the query why he seems to be always happy. The answer is because of the lessons learned from the 24 gurus!! This is a contribution from RP Turaga.

One more thing carries the our homage to Sribhashyam Appalacharyulu Garu

The "Athato-Brhma-jignyasa", continues on the existing pattern. Under "Athato Brahma Jignyasaa"- we complete the sixth part of Katha upanishad with Yama answering Nachiketa's question on what happens after death ! .

Remembering

Sribhashyam Appalacharyulu garu

Guru Purnima is day for remembering Gurus.

In Uddhava Gita the Aavadhuta lists 24 Gurus whom every one can identify with.

In real life every one of us have our own Gurus, who made an impression on us. It would invariably start with ones own mother as the first Guru.Then you acquire Gurus as you grow up from among your own teachers, from the official circles , and the social circles. Like Avadhuta we can list our own 24 Gurus.

The tallest of my Gurus is Sribhashyam Appalacharyulu garu who was my Sanskrit teacher at the Govt PR College Kakinada during 1960-61. I would not have been fortunate to have Sribhashyam Appalacharyulu as Guru but for another Sanskrit Guru Shri Garimella Annarama Sarma garu who taught us Sanskrit at the very young age as a nine year old in the PRC School Kakinada (53-57). With a thundering and at the same time mellifluous voice rendering slokas mesmerizing students , he made Sanskrit class as some thing you look forward to and not bunk!

Having Sribhashyam

Appalacharyulu garu as your guru meant being given personal attention. It also helps that we were only three students' two boys and a girl (a Ramanathan and a Lalita from Kakinada). Amazing thing was that when he came to know that one of the topics Chandraloka was already completed for the existing batch but I was not taught in my previous college , he asked me to come to his home on Saturdays and Sundays and that he will teach me separately. The two months of going to his home sitting on the floor listening to him explain chandraloka, made me his Sishya for life.

At that impressionable age he taught us Kalidasa's Abigynana Sakuntalam bringing out the inner meaning (Antarardham) of the events and outer shell of the story. At a stage when the distinction between the 'inner message' and the 'outer shell' of a story is not easily understood , the distinction he brought in his explanation, allowed us to say so and we excelled in our answers. Needless to say when the results came and I went to the Lecturers room, he was so thrilled that he introduced to me all the other Telugu, Hindi teachers proudly proclaiming “my” Sanskrit Student who came first in the college!

From then on every summer going and meeting him was a necessary event. When his public discourses started in Kakinada he became a Guru for our family too..

My mother was so fascinated by his lectures and writings that with his blessings, parts of his books were re-printed for distribution (Ramudu- Sugunabhiramudu) . When we put together a “Sankshipta Sundarakanda I went to his home in Shiela Nagar in Visakhapatnam for his blessings and requested him to say a few words of introduction. He gave a one-hour oration on the inner meaning of Sundarakanda, which I took down in long hand and presented it as part of Kasarabada Kamaraju Charitable Trust publication of Sankshipta Sundarakanda.

For me and countless others Sribhashyam Appalacharyulu Garu remains a Guru for all time !

This week we are also starting Sundarakanda elaboration under "Ramayanam". As part of that we will add the Sribhashyam Appalacharyulu garu's oration on the inner message of Sundarakanda or "Antarardham" .

Incidentally the Telugu oration of Sribhashyam Appalacharyulu garu was translated into English by another Guruji Pandit Vijayraghavrao whose Telugu Sundarakanda in free Telugu verse form was also published by Kasarabada Kamaraju Charitable Trust.
