(Valli 6)

The Valli six starts with a very interesting concept of Brahman and the world rooted in Brahman. This is also to akin to the famous first Sloka in the 15th chapter of Bhagavad-Gita

ఊర్ధ్వమూల మథశ్శాఖం
అశ్వత్థం ప్రాహురవ్యయమ్|
ऊर्ध्वमूल मथश्शाखं
अश्वत्थं प्राहुरव्ययम्

In Kathopanishad the Sanskrit text actually does not use the word “tree” or Vruksa . It does use the word "Asvattha" . This is “Aswattha”. Aswattha being a known name of a Vruksha the explanation probably tends to link the whole thing to a tree. Aswattha in the true Sanskrit elaboration also means impermanent. When Yama said “Esho Aswattha “it could simply be “this impermanent ”. Rooted up above in the Brahman spreading its branches below the Samsara is impermamanent. It is absolutely true and in line with the philosophy which declares life as transient and impermanent.

As elaborated by Sankara and for us in a more simple way by Chinmaya it is not about the upside down tree. It is about the all forms being rooted in the source up above that is Brahman.

Yama starts his teaching in Valli 6 with this sloka on Aswattha !!.

ఊర్ధ్వమూలో వాక్ శాఖా
ఏషో అశ్వత్థః సనాతనః
తదేవ శుక్రం తద్ బ్రహ్మ
తదేవ అమృతముచ్యతే |
ऊर्ध्वमूलो वाक् शाखा
एषो अश्वत्थः सनातनः
तदेव शुक्रं तद् ब्रह्म
तदेव अमृतमुच्यते ।

Rooted up above in the Brahman spreading its branches below this is impermanent and this is ancient.

Yama explains to Nachiketa about the Aswattha the impermanent tree . It is the tree of creation, which is rooted above in Brahman and sends its branches downward into the phenomenal world. The dualities of life are its branches . But the origin of the tree is eternally pure .From the highest angelic form to the minutest atom all owe the origins to him. He is the foundation of the Universe and there is nothing beyond him. Yama says "This is the truth you wanted to know"

యదిదం కించ జగత్ సర్వం
ప్రాణ ఏజతి నిః సృతమ్ |
यदिदं किंच जगत् सर्वं
प्राण एजति निः सृतम् ।

Whatever there is in the Universe has evolved from the Prana and vibrates in Prana.

Whatever there is in the Universe is evolved from the Prana and vibrates in Prana. That is a mighty terror. For fear of him the fire burns . For fear of him Sun shines. For fear of him Indra and Vayu and death speed forth !

The concept of whole world sun moon etc running in great terror is that they all follow rigid laws (Maxwell's laws may be) as though Brahman is standing by with a Vajrayudaha. The universe is in fact running smoothly and harmoniously following the laws of nature. The law of nature is the Vajrayudha.

ఇంద్రియాణాం పృథక్భావం
ఉదయాస్త మయౌ చ యత్ |
इंद्रियाणां पृथक्भावं
उदयास्त मयौ च यत् ।

" One who understands the true nature of the " indriayas" their raise and fall"

Yama tells nachiketa - One who understands the true nature of the " indriayas" their raise and fall" knows self to be independent of these "indriyas" he will be free from the dualities of life

This week Sundarakanda moves to Chapter 64 .

In Chapter 64 the most impotant line is :

नियता मक्षतां देवीं राघवाय न्यवेदयत् ॥
నియతా మక్షతాం దేవీం రాఘవాయ న్యవేదయత్ ||
That is Hanuman stating that Sita is safe without a blemish ! For some this line is a conclusion of the mission starting from the first sloka :
ततो रावण नीताया: सीतायाश्शत्रुकर्शनः।
इयेष पदमन्वेष्टुं चारणा चरिते पथिः ॥
తతో రావణ నీతాయా: సీతాయాశ్శత్రుకర్శనః|
ఇయేష పదమన్వేష్టుం చారణా చరితే పథిః ||

This also means that in four weeks we are completing our Sundarakanda Yagnya !!

For the new visitors we thought of adding a few lines on navigation , so that they may know what is available on Kasarabada.org !

We have 89 chapters of Dasama Skandha of Bhagavatam. All these chapters (stories on Krishna) are listed by name and are available on a link on the Bhagavatam page.

We have 62 chapters of Sundarakanda and also complete bouquet of articles on Ramayana. These articles include "Role models from Ramayana" namely Srirama , Sita , Hanuman , Jataayu , Sabari , Bharata , Lakshmana. Story of "My"

Sundarakanda

Sundarakanda !?

It is a story that can convert a non believer into a believer !

In fact that is how it started for us !

To start with I must first admit that Sundarakanda reading is a family tradition. So as per the Gene theory you can say it must be part of my genes !

My mother used to do Sundarakanda Parayana.

As family traditions go sometimes you may follow it without thinking about it or say believing in it !

In this case I did not do anything to follow that tradition except knowing that my mother is doing the same for my sake. If I were to ask her to do some puja she would say that "I will read Sundarakanda for you!!" That was the extent of my involvement !

I always had copies of Sundarakanda with me. The first one being a gift from my parents ( a Vavilala Ramasastri Telugu edition !!). That was when I was going for a job in Allahabad late 1970's.! But much before that when I was going to IISC as a student my father inserted a small card in my wallet with jaya mantram in his hand writing. That always remained as part of my wallet.

I also had the the complete Valmiki Ramayana ( the three volume Gita press edition) bought for a princely sum of Rupees twenty five at the Kanpur Railway platform. Being an avid collector I also had the Sanskrit Valmiki Sundarakanda of Advaita press, Calcutta too !

So I was well equipped in all respects to be a follower of Sundarakanda !

Then it happened when a person I admired visited!

I was in Trivandrum as a Director of an Electronics Lab under Govt of India and had one of my seniors from IISc Bangalore visit us for some official reviews . My senior was an academically brilliant scholar. He was always first in the class. He was the kind of person I wanted to be in my dreams!! .

There is a general belief that those who are brilliant do not need the hand of God!, they make their own hand of god !! . It is the rest of us who are struggling for success that run after Gods , temples coconuts etc. So my senior was the one whom I framed in my mind as one who does not need to resort to any prayers for any success etc ! .

We finished the days technical discussions, and moved into what I would call as social chit chat . The discussion some how turned to Sundarakanda. And then he held forth on the power of Sundarakanda . He was insisting that I should read the same if I have not done so !.

I was actually taken aback by the fact that here is a man who did not need any "hand of God" in his college days or subsequent days. Yet he is sold on the power of Sundarakanda ! He is telling me some thing which my mother was already practicing ! In fact she was reading Sundarakanda parayana for me !!

That is when I took up serious reading ! There has been never been any looking back after that.

Being a Sanskrit student all my life the Valmiki's simple Sanskrit slokas made it easy for me to grasp the meanings and the story !! . There was never a "difficult to read" moment in Sundarakanda !

Then came a real collaboration with my mother in recreating a small version of Sundarakanda. My mother, My mother, having already gone through re-printing excerpts ( Raamudu Sugunaabhiraamudu) from Sundarakanda with the blessings of Shri Bhashyam Appalaacharyulu garu, now wanted to print a few slokas from all the sixty eight chapters of Sundarakanda as booklet !!.

With my interest in Sanskrit we selected about three hundred slokas which maintained the thread of the story fully. We brought the same out as Sankshipta Sundarakanda in Telugu, again with the blessings of Sri Bhashyam Appalaacharyulu garu!!

That was like a dream project completed at the peak of my professional career with little time for anything else other than office !

Subsequently we also had the same Sankshipta Sundarakanda Sanskrit slokas with English translation. This was followed by Sankshipta Sundarakanda in Kannada script and malayalam Script !!

That in short is the story of "my" Sundarakanda !!
