Sarga 63

"ದೃಷ್ಟಾ ದೇವೀ ನ ಸಂದೇಹೋ" means, "Sita has been seen, without a doubt"; and he adds, "Not by anybody else, by Hanuman only"; That is Sugriva's statement.

This speaks volumes about Sugriva's belief in Hanuma. Sugriva reached the conclusion even before Hanuma and others could report after Hanuma's safe return. No conversation about Hanuma's greatness can end, without out quoting this statement of Sugriva. How Sugriva reached that conclusion is the story of this Sarga.

There is another aspect that should be noted. That is about a commitment redeemed.

When this information was conveyed, Rama and Lakshmana were delighted. Looking at the delight of Rama and Lakshmana, which is reflected in their eyes. Sugriva was delighted (ನನನ್ದ 63.27). Valmiki describes that happy scene. ‘The duo of princes was overjoyed. It could be seen in their eyes that expanded in delight. With their object all but met, all their limbs were filled with happiness. The king of Vanaras too was extremely delighted, knowing that the successful end of his mission is within reach. ಬಾಹ್ವೋರಾಸನ್ನಾಂ means ಹಸ್ತಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಮಿವ, As though it is within his hands reach!

Sugriva who has committed to take up search for Sita, in return for getting Vanara kingdom, now almost feels like he discharged his responsibility. And so, he is delighted. A commitment has been redeemed. Thus there is happiness shared by all the three in this Sarga. This is also the first occasion, in Sundarakanda, where Rama's, who is always present in the background, is acknowledged as being physically present.

Now we go through the Slokas of Sarga sixty-three.

ತತೋ ಮೂರ್ಧ್ನಾ ನಿಪತಿತಂ ವಾನರಂ ವಾನರರ್ಷಭಃ |

ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವೈವೋ ದ್ವಿಗ್ನಹೃದಯೋ ವಾಕ್ತಮೇತ ದುವಾಚ ಹ ||63.01||

ಸ|| ತತಃ ವಾನರರ್ಷಭಃ ಮೂರ್ಧ್ನಾ ನಿಪತಿತಂ ವಾನರಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಉದ್ವಿಗ್ನ ಹೃದಯಃ ಏತತ್  ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಉವಾಚ ಹ ||

ತತಃ ವಾನರರ್ಷಭಃ - 

then the bull among Vanaras

ಮೂರ್ಧ್ನಾ ನಿಪತಿತಂ ವಾನರಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ - 

seeing Dadhimukha fallen at his feet

ಉದ್ವಿಗ್ನ ಹೃದಯಃ - 

being anxious

ಏತತ್ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಉವಾಚ ಹ- 

spoke these words

ಅಭಯಂ ತೇ ಭವೇತ್ ವೀರ ಸರ್ವ ಮೇವಾಭಿದೀಯತಾಮ್ ||63.02||

oh hero, get up, get up

ಕಸ್ಮಾತ್ ಮಮ ಪಾದಯೋಃ ತ್ವಂ ಪತಿತಃ - 

why are you falling at my feet?

ತೇ ಅಭಯಂ ಭವೇತ್ - you have no fear 

ಸರ್ವಂ ಏವ ಅಭಿಧೀಯತಾಮ್ - 

everything may be told

"Oh Hero ! Get up, get up. Why are you falling at my feet ? Have no fear .You may tell everything". ||63.02||

ಸ ತು ವಿಶ್ವಾಸಿತಃ ತೇನ ಸುಗ್ರೀವೇಣ ಮಹಾತ್ಮನಾ |

ಉತ್ಥಾಯ ಸುಮಹಾಪ್ರಾಜ್ಞೋ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ದಧಿಮುಖೋಬ್ರವೀತ್ ||63.03||

ಉತ್ಥಾಯ ಸಃ ವಾಕ್ಯಃ ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ -

ವನಂ ವಿಸೃಷ್ಟಪೂರ್ವಂ ಹಿ ಭಕ್ಷಿತಂ ತಚ್ಚ ವಾನರೈಃ ||63.04||

ಸ|| ರಾಜನ್ ಋಕ್ಷರಜಸಾ ನೈವ  ತ್ವಯಾ ನ ವಾಲಿನಾ ಅಪಿ ವನಂ ವಿಶ್ರುಷ್ಟಪೂರ್ವಂ ತಚ್ಚ ವಾನರೈಃ ಭಕ್ಷಿತಮ್||

Tilaka Tikaa says - ನೈವ ವಿಶ್ರುಷ್ಟಪೂರ್ವಂ ವಾನರೇಭ್ಯೋ ಯಥೇಚ್ಛಭೋಗಾಯ ಕದಾಪಿ ನ ಅನುಜ್ಞಾತಮ್

Govindaraja Tika says - ಗೋವಿನ್ದರಾಜ ಟೀಕಾಲೋ- ನ ವಿಸ್ರುಷ್ಟಪೂರ್ವಂ ಯಥೇಚ್ಛಭೋಗಾಯ ನ ದತ್ತಂ

ರಾಜನ್ ಋಕ್ಷರಜಸಾ ನೈವ -

 o king, neither by Ruksharajasa

ತ್ವಯಾ ನ ವಾಲಿನಾ ಅಪಿ - 

or even before by you or Vali 

ನೈವ ವಿಶ್ರುಷ್ಟಪೂರ್ವಂ ಹಿ - 

which was not accessible for enjoyment.  

ತಚ್ಚ ವನಂ ವಾನರೈಃ ಭಕ್ಷಿತಮ್-

 that grove was  eaten by Vanaras

Oh Rajan ! That grove (Madhuvan)  which is not accessible in the time of Ruksharajasa or even before or in Vali's time or yours , was eaten by Vanaras. ||63.04||

ಏಭಿಃ ಪ್ರದರ್ಷಿತಾಶ್ಚೈವ ವಾನರಾ ವನರಕ್ಷಿಭಿಃ | 

ಮಧೂನ್ಯಚಿನ್ತಯತ್ವೇಮಾನ್ ಭಕ್ಷಯಂತಿ ಪಿಬಂತಿ ಚ ||63.05||

ಸ|| ಏಭಿಃ ವನರಕ್ಷಿಭಿಃ ಪ್ರಧರ್ಷಿತಶ್ಚಏವ ಇಮಾನ್ ಅಚಿನ್ತಯಿತ್ವಾ ಮಧೂನಿ ಭಕ್ಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ ಪಿಬನ್ತಿ ಚ||

ಏಭಿಃ ಇಮಾನ್ ವನರಕ್ಷಿಭಿಃ ಪ್ರಧರ್ಷಿತಶ್ಚಏವ - 

though resisted by the guards of the grove

ಅಚಿನ್ತಯಿತ್ವಾ - 

without caring 

ಮಧೂನಿ ಭಕ್ಷ್ಯನ್ತಿ ಪಿಬನ್ತಿ ಚ- 

they ate honey combs and drank too

Rama Tika says - ಅಪರೇ ಭಕ್ಷಯನ್ತಿ ಶಿಷ್ಟಮವಿಶಿಷ್ಟಂ ಅಪವಿಧ್ಯನ್ತಿ ಪ್ರಕ್ಷಿಪನ್ತಿ ಚ ನಿವಾರ್ಯಮಾಣಾಃ ಸನ್ತಃ ಭ್ರುಕುಟೀಂ ದರ್ಶಯನ್ತಿ ಚ|

ಶಿಷ್ಟಂ ಅತ್ರ ಅಪವಿಧ್ಯನ್ತಿ - 

left overs were thrown off.

ಅಪರೇ ತಥಾ ಭಕ್ಷಯನ್ತಿ - 

similarly others were eating

ತೇ ಸರ್ವೇ ನಿವಾರ್ಯಮಾಣಃ - 

when they were prevented

ಭೃವಃ ದರ್ಶಯನ್ತಿ ಚ - 

they raised their eyebrows

'Left overs were thrown off. Similarly others were eating, when they were prevented they raised their eyebrows'. ||63.06||

ವಾರಯಂತೋ ವನಾತ್ ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ ಕ್ರುದ್ಧೈರ್ವಾನರಪುಂಗವೈಃ ||63.07||

ತಥಾ ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ ವನಾತ್ ವಾರಯನ್ತಃ - 

when prevented from that grove

ಸಂರಬ್ಧತರಾಃ ಕ್ರುದ್ಧೈಃ ತೈಃ ವಾನರಪುಂಗವೈಃ - 

enraged and angry Vanaras with the ones stopping them 

ಇಮೇ ಸಂಪ್ರಧರ್ಷಿತಾಃ - ill-treated them

'When prevented from that grove, the enraged and angry Vanaras  ill-treated the  ones trying to stop them'. ||63.07||

ಸಂರಕ್ತನಯನೈಃ ಕ್ರೋಧಾದ್ದರಯಃ ಪ್ರವಿಚಾಲಿತಾಃ ||63.08||

ವಾನರರ್ಷಭ ತತಃ - 

then o bull among Vanaras 

ಕ್ರೋಧಾತ್ ಸಂರಕ್ತನಯನೈಃ ವೀರೈಃ -

by heroes who were angry and with red eyes,

ತೈಃ ವಾನರೈಃ ಬಹುಭಿಃ -  

by many of those Vanaras

ಹರಯಃ ಪ್ರವಿಚಾಲಿತಃ- 

guards were chased away

ದೇವಮಾರ್ಗಂ ದರ್ಶಿತಾಃ ಚ- thrown into the sky

ತೈಃ ಕೃತ್ಸ್ನಂ ಮಧುವನಂ ಚ -

they destroyed the Madhuvan 

ಏವ ಪ್ರಕಾಮಂ ಪ್ರಭಕ್ಷ್ಯತೇ - 

devoured the honey as they liked

'When you are the king these heroes were hit in this way. They destroyed the Madhuvan and devoured the honey as they liked'. ||63.10||

ಕಂ ಚಾರ್ಥಮಭಿನಿರ್ದಿಶ್ಯ ದುಃಖಿತೋ ವಾಕ್ಯಮಬ್ರವೀತ್ ||63.12||

ಸ|| ರಾಜನ್ ಕಿಂ  ವನಪಃ ಅಯಃ ವಾನರಃ  ಪ್ರತ್ಯುಪಸ್ಥಿತಃ | ದುಃಖಿತಃ ಕಿಂ | ಅರ್ಥಮ್ ಅಭಿನಿರ್ದಿಸ್ಯ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ ||

Rama Tika says - ಕಿಮಿತಿ| ಹೇ ರಾಜನ್ ಅಯಂ ವನಪಃ ಕಿಂ ಕಿಮರ್ಥಂ ಪ್ರತ್ಯುಪಸ್ಥಿತಃ | ಕಿಮರ್ಥಂ ಅಭಿನಿರ್ದಿಸ್ಯ ಬೊಧಯಿತ್ವಾ ದುಃಖಿತಃ ಸನ್ ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ |

ಅಯಃ ವಾನರಃ  ಪ್ರತ್ಯುಪಸ್ಥಿತಃ- this Vanara is here

 ಅಭಿನಿರ್ದಿಸ್ಯ ವಾಕ್ಯಂ ಅಬ್ರವೀತ್ - 

for what purpose he is telling

ಅಂಗದ ಪ್ರಮುಖೈಃ ವೀರೈಃ - 

by Angada and other heroes 

ವಾನರೈಃ ಮಧು ಭಕ್ಷಿತಂ -

 honey has been consumed by Vanaras 

ದಕ್ಷಿಣಾಮ್ ಆಶಾಂ ವಿಚಿನ್ತ್ಯ ಆಗತೈಃ  - 

who have come after searching in southern direction.

'Oh Venerable one ! Dadhimukha is saying that fruits and honey have been consumed by the Vanara heroes Angada and others, who have come after their search for Sita in the southern direction'. ||63.14||
