1.2 The Katho Upanishad ( contd)

The Kathopanishad starts with the story of a Rishi Vajasravas and his son Nachiketa. The dialog of Nachiketa with Lord Yama carries the message of the Upanishad.

Rishi Vajasravas performs 'Viswajit' sacrifice which involves giving away all his wealth. His Nachiketa notices that his father is giving away gifts( cows) which are of no use. Very much concerned and trying to grab the attention of his father he asks his father to whom will he give 'Nachiketa'. Father being busy with the rituals and with without realizing says "to death". There upon to keep his fathers word Nachiketa moves to Yama's world. Yama was away when Nachiketa reaches the place. He waits for three nights till Yama returns. Alerted that a Brahman was waiting for him for three days without partaking anything as a guest , Yama offers him three boons for the three nights he waited. For the first boon Nachiketa wants to understand the Fire sacrifice and for the Second boon he wants that his Father be free of anxiety and be happy . Both the boons being granted Nachiketa asks for the third boon the knowledge about "hereafter". Nachiketa says that some say there is life after death some say not and he wants to know what happens after death. Yama tries to dissuade him with all sorts of worldly boons. Nachiketa could not be deterred. Yama tells him even Devas do not know, it is too difficult to understand . Nachiketa still insists on the knowledge then Yama relents.

So the kathopanishad continue into Valli two of First Adhyaya ..

Yama continues.

' The good is one thing and pleasant is another. The two have have different ends and bind the man. It is well with him who chooses good . But the one who chooses pleasant misses the True goal.

'Both 'Good' and 'Pleasant' approach the man. The intelligent one understanding fully, separates the 'Good' from 'Pleasant' and selects the 'Good'. The unintelligent man for the growth and protection of the body selects 'Pleasant'.

'O Nachiketa you have discarded the 'Pleasant' in favor of 'Good'. Indeed the ignorance and the wisdom lead you in opposite directions. O Nachiketa I consider you to be a true aspirant of Knowledge.

Fools living in ignorance , yet imagining themselves to be wise go round and round like the blind led by a blind. The thought of 'hereafter' never arises for the ignorant deluded by glamour and wealth. They think.

"this is the world and there is no other ( nothing else !!)'.

The interesting update on a philosophy "Charvaka" which is silently followed by many even if they claim "Sankara" as their own , continues . This is brought out under "One more thing"

That is Charuvaka school which believes in "Here" and "Now".

The Bhagavatam Dasama Skandha continues with the Chapter 83 which is about Krishna's Consorts !. No, not about all the sixteen thousand of them . It is about the Principal Nine consorts. We hear them in their own words how they got married to Lord Krishna. This comes as result of women's talk, with Draupadi asking them a question. You can read this in Bhagavatam Chapter 83.

The Kathopanishad continues in Athato with Valli 2 of Adhyaya On e....

... 'This word is Supreme. Whoever meditates on this word obtains all he desires.This word is the best support. He who knows this support achieves what ever he de sires....

Thus starts the teaching of Yama on the word "om" .

One More thing

Charvakas

. For most of us Sankara is a revered figure. Probably ninety percent of people own up Sankara and the Advaita philosophy. We own up probably without knowing the deep thought process that led Sankara to present Advaita to the world.

More importantly while we may claim Sankara as our own , our actual attitude to life may be more supportive of “practical” way of life focusing on “here “ and “now”. In fact a good majority of us revel in ”here “ and “now”. We may tend to say that is all western influence.

It is not so.

In fact there was a school of thought even in those Upanishadic times which projected and pursued the philosophy of “here “and “now”.

It is Charuvaka school of philosophy .

Its guru is “Brihaspati”. Ninety percent of the followers are laymen .

The first line of its philosophy says " Lead life happily as long as you live. No one can escape from Vision of Death. When once this body is burned to ashes where from does it return again?"

The elaboration of this ancient and “disowned but still silently prevalent” philosophy of Charuvaka is presented under One more thing.

To be doubly sure we do not subscribe to that school . If at times we look like adherents of Charuvaka school of “here “ and “now” ,or “being practical” it is because our struggle to rise to Standard set by Sankara is falling short.

We should get back to our line … it is the word ,

That word is om !!
