Sarga 60

"तथा भवान् पश्यतु कार्यसिद्धिं"  ; "you see how the task can be successfully completed" The task is to be completed , the way it is in the mind of Rama. These are words of Jambavan.

Hanuma, forgetting Sita's words, said that many of the Vanaras can accomplish the task of killing Ravana. Hence he said that it is better they carry Sita with them to Rama. At the end though, Hanuma left the decision to the others.

Angada takes that thought further, and insists that they go to Rama only along with Sita. Angada is the prince. His word cannot be set aside easily 

Jambavan is an old wise man. He knows how to move the things. So, he tells Angada, that he is right. But reminds everybody about the original plan. All of this is happening because of Rama. Now also they need to know what is in Rama's mind. Only after that next course of action can be finalized.

This is what we hear from Valmiki in this Sarga.

Now we will go through the Slokas of Sarga number sixty..

||Sloka 60.01||

तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा वालिसूनुरभाषत।

अयुक्तं तु विना देवीं  दृष्टवद्भिश्च वानराः॥60.01||

समीपं गन्तुमस्माभी राघवस्य महात्मनः।

स॥ तस्य हनुमतस्य तत् वचनं श्रुत्वा वालि सूनुः अभाषत॥ वानराः दृष्टवद्भिः अस्माभिः देवी विना महात्मनः राघवस्य समीपं गंतुं अयुक्तं तु॥

॥Sloka meanings||

तस्य हनुमतस्य तत् वचनं श्रुत्वा - 

hearing those words of Hanuman 

वालि सूनुः अभाषत - Vali’s son spoke

वानराः दृष्टवद्भिः अस्माभिः - 

Vanaras, by us who have seen Sita 

महात्मनः राघवस्य समीपं -

 near great soul Rama 

देवी विना गंतुं अयुक्तं तु - 

going without Sita is not proper

"Hearing those words of Hanuman , Vali’s son spoke. ‘Vanaras, though Sita was seen, going to Rama without Sita is not proper". ||60.01|| 

||Sloka 60.02||

दृष्टादेवी न चाऽऽनीता इति तत्र निवेदनम्॥60.02||

अयुक्तमिव पश्यामि भवद्भिः ख्यातविक्रमैः।

स॥ ख्यातविक्रमैः भवद्भिः देवी दृष्टा न आनीता च इति तत्र निवेदितुं अयुक्तं इव पश्यामि॥

॥Sloka meanings||

ख्यातविक्रमैः भवद्भिः -

 by you who are known as powerful 

देवी दृष्टा न आनीता च -

 Sita was seen but not brought 

इति तत्र निवेदितुं - 

conveying that  there  

अयुक्तं इव पश्यामि - 

I see it as inappropriate.

||Sloka summary||

"By you, who are known as powerful, conveying there that  Sita was seen but not brought, I see it as inappropriate." ||60.02||

||Sloka 60.03||

न हि नः प्लवने कश्चिन्नापि कश्चित्पराक्रमे॥

तुल्यः सामरदैत्येषु लोकेषु हरिसत्तमाः॥60.03||

स॥ हरिसत्तमाः अमर दैत्येषु लोकेषु  नः  प्लवने कश्चिन्  तुल्यः न | पराक्रमे अपि कश्चिन् न।

॥Sloka meanings||

हरिसत्तमाः - o best of Vanaras

अमर दैत्येषु लोकेषु -

 among Devas or Daityas all over

नः  प्लवने कश्चिन्  तुल्यः न - 

none who can equal us in flying 

पराक्रमे अपि कश्चिन् न- 

 in strength too none 

||Sloka summary||

"O best of Vanaras, there is none among Devas or Daityas who can equal us in our strength or in our ability flying in the sky". ||60.03||

||Sloka 60.04||

जित्वा लंकां सरक्षौघां हत्वा तं रावणं रणे

सीतामादाय गछ्छामः सिद्धार्था हृष्टमानसा ||60.04||

स॥ रणे तं रावणं हत्वा सरक्षौघां लंकां जित्वा सीतामादाय सिद्धार्था हृष्टमानसा गछ्छामः॥

॥Sloka meanings||

रणे तं रावणं हत्वा - 

killing Ravana in the battle 

सरक्षौघां लंकां जित्वा -

 conquering Lanka with all Rakshasas

सीतामादाय - rescue Sita

सिद्धार्था हृष्टमानसा गछ्छामः -

 achieve our goal and go happily

||Sloka summary||

 

"Killing Ravana in the battle along with all Rakshasas and conquering Lanka, we rescue Sita, achieve our goal and go happily ( and meet Rama) ".||60.04||

||Sloka 60.05||

तेष्वेवं  हत वीरेषु राक्षसेषु हनूमता।

किमन्यदत्रकर्तव्यं गृहीत्वा याम जानकीं॥60.05||

स॥ हनूमता हत वीरेषु राक्षसेषु जानकीं गृहीत्वा राम समीपं याक्षान्यत् अत्र किं कर्तव्यं॥

Rama Tilaka says - तेष्वेति॥ हनूमता हतशेषेषु राक्षशेषु सत्सु जानकीं गृहीत्वा याम राम समीपं याम अन्यत् हतो बिन्नम् अत्र  अस्मिन् समये किंकर्तव्यं  इदमेव कर्तव्यं इत्यर्थः॥

॥Sloka meanings||

हनूमता हत वीरेषु राक्षसेषु -

 Hanuman killed many of those Rakshasas

जानकीं गृहीत्वा - taking Janaki 

राम समीपं याम -

 going back Rama 

अन्यत् अत्र किं कर्तव्यं- 

what is the task left ?

"Hanuman has killed many of those Rakshasas. What is the task left other than bringing Sita and going back to Rama ?" ||60.05||

||Sloka 60.06||

रामलक्ष्मणयोर्मध्ये न्यस्याम जनकात्मजाम्।

किंव्यलीकैस्तु तान् सर्वान् वानरान् वानरर्षभान्॥60.06||

स॥ जनकात्मजाम् रामलक्ष्मणयोर्मध्ये न्यस्याम ।तान् सर्वान् वानरान् वानरर्षभान् किंव्यलीकैस्तु ॥

Rama Tika says-  जनकात्मजाम् रामलक्ष्मणयोर्मध्ये न्यस्याम संस्थापयाम । वानरर्षभान् सर्वान् प्रति व्यलीकैः अप्रियैः रामादिकर्त्रुक औदासीन्यवचनैः किं, लन किमपि इत्यर्थः॥

॥Sloka meanings||

जनकात्मजाम् - Sita 

रामलक्ष्मणयोर्मध्ये न्यस्याम - 

keep her in the middle of Rama and Lakshmana 

तान् सर्वान् वानरान् वानरर्षभान् - 

all those Vanaras and the best among them  

किंव्यलीकैस्तु - why should they be troubled ?

||Sloka summary||

"Let us bring back Sita to be in the middle of Rama and Lakshmana. All those Vanaras and the best among them, why should they be troubled ?" ||60.06||

||Sloka 60.07||

वयमेव हि गत्वा तान् हत्वा राक्षसपुंगवान्।

राघवं द्रष्टुमर्हामः सुग्रीवं सह लक्ष्मणम्॥60.07||

स॥ वयमेव तान् हत्वा राक्षसपुंगवान् हि गत्वा सुग्रीवं लक्ष्मणम् सह राघवं द्रष्टुमर्हामः ॥

॥Sloka meanings||

वयमेव - we on our own 

गत्वा तान् हत्वा राक्षसपुंगवान् - 

having gone and having killed all those Rakshasas

सुग्रीवं लक्ष्मणम् सह राघवं - 

Raghava along with Lakshmana and Sugriva 

द्रष्टुमर्हामः- capable of seeing 

||Sloka summary||

"On our own having gone and having killed all those Rakshasas, we are capable of seeing Rama along with Lakshmana and Sugriva ."

 ||60.07||

||Sloka 60.08||

तमेवं कृतसंकल्पं जाम्बवान् हरिसत्तमः।

उवाच परमप्रीतो वाक्यमर्थवदर्थवित्॥60.08||

स॥ एवं कृतसंकल्पं तं जाम्बवान् हरिसत्तमः परमप्रीतः अर्थवित् वाक्यं उवाच॥

॥Sloka meanings||

एवं कृतसंकल्पं तं -

 them who have made up their minds 

जाम्बवान् हरिसत्तमः - 

Jambavan, best among Vanaras

परमप्रीतः अर्थवित् वाक्यं -  

with affection and with meaningful words 

उवाच - spoke 

||Sloka summary||

"Jambavan then spoke affectionately with meaningful words to that best of Vanaras, who made up his mind on the course of action." ||60.08||

||Sloka 60.09||

नैषा बुद्धिर्महाबुद्धे महाकपेमहाकपे।

विचेतुं वयमाज्ञप्ता दक्षिणां दिशमुत्तमाम्॥60.09||

स॥ महाबुद्धे महाकपे न एषा बुद्धिः। वयं दक्षिणां दिशमुत्तमाम् विचेतुं इति आज्ञप्ता॥

Rama Tika says- यतः दक्षिणां दिशं विच्चेतुं एव वयं आज्ञप्ताः नानेतुं सीतां इति शेषः  अतः यत्ब्रवीषि  तद्विषयणी एषा बुद्धिः निश्चयः न कर्तव्येति शेषः ।

महाबुद्धे महाकपे - 

Oh, great Vanara

न एषा बुद्धिः -

 that thought is not appropriate

दक्षिणां दिशमुत्तमाम् विचेतुं -

 in the Southern direction to search 

इति वयं आज्ञप्ता- 

thus we were ordered 

||Sloka summary||

"Oh, great Vanara, that thought is not appropriate. We were ordered to go in the Southern direction in search of Sita". ||60.09||

Jambavan is referring to the thought of bringing Sita too and then going to Rama. That he says is inappropriate. he gives reasons.

||Sloka 60.10||

नानेतुं कपिराजेन नैव रामेण धीमता।

कथंचिन्निर्जितां सीतां अस्माभिर्नाभिरोचयेत्॥60.10||

स॥ सीतां नानेतुं कपिराजेन धीमता रामेण न एवं ( कथिता) । कथंचित्  अस्माभिः निर्जिताम् ( तथापि) न अभिरोचयेत्।

॥Sloka meanings||

सीतां अनेतुं - bring back Sita  

कपिराजेन धीमता रामेण न एवं ( कथिता) - 

not said by king of Vanaras and sagacious Rama 

कथंचित्  अस्माभिः निर्जिताम्- even if we are victorious 

( तथापि) न अभिरोचयेत् - may not be very happy 

||Sloka summary||

‘Bringing her back was not mentioned by the king of Vanaras or sagacious Rama. Gaining victory in some way and carrying her back may not be liked ||60.11||

||Sloka 60.11||

राघवो नृपशार्दूलः कुलं व्यपदिशन् स्वकम्।

प्रतिज्ञाय स्वयं राजा सीता विजयमग्रतः॥60.11||

सर्वेषां कपिमुख्यानां कथं मिथ्या करिष्यति।

स॥ नृपशार्दूलः राघवो स्वकम् कुलं व्यपदिशन् । स्वयं राजा सीता विजयं सर्वेषां कपिमुख्यानां अग्रतः प्रतिज्ञाय कथं मिथ्या करिष्यति ॥

Tilaka Tika says  - अग्रतः कपिमुख्यानां अग्रतः।

Rama Tika says - प्रतिज्ञायेति॥ कपिमुख्यानां अग्रतः स्वकं स्वसंपाद्यं सीताविजयं सीताहेतुक स्वकर्त्रुक रावण पराभव पूर्वक प्रतिज्ञाय स्वोत्कर्षप्राप्तिं मिथ्या कथं करिष्यति , न करिष्यति इत्यर्थः। अस्य तस्य रामस्य तुष्टिः न भवेत्। अतः कृतं अपि कर्म विफलं भवेत्।

॥Sloka meanings||

नृपशार्दूलः - lion among princes 

राघवो स्वकम् कुलं व्यपदिशन् - 

Raghava referring to his illustrious lineage 

स्वयं राजा सीता विजयं - 

to bring back Sita victoriously by himself 

सर्वेषां कपिमुख्यानां अग्रतः प्रतिज्ञाय- 

having taken a vow in front of all Vanara leaders

कथं मिथ्या करिष्यति -

 how can he not let it happen?

||Sloka summary||

"Raghava, lion among princes, referring to his illustrious lineage, himself took a vow to gain victory and bring back Sita. How can he not let it happen? ". ||60.11||

||Sloka 60.12||

विफलं कर्म च कृतं भवेत् तुष्टिर्न तस्य च॥

वृथा च दर्शितं वीर्यं भवेद्वानरपुंगवाः॥60.12||

स॥  कृतं कर्म च विफलं भवेत्। तस्य तुष्टिः न च। वानरपुंगवाः दर्शितं वीर्यं वृथा च भवेत्।

॥Sloka meanings||

कृतं कर्म च विफलं भवेत् - 

action done in opposition will be a failure

तस्य तुष्टिः न च - 

not lead to happiness

वानरपुंगवाः दर्शितं वीर्यं - 

courage shown in doing so by Vanara warriors 

वृथा च भवेत्- 

would also be a wasted effort

||Sloka summary||

" Any action in opposition will be a failure and will not lead to happiness. The courage shown in doing so would also be a wasted effort".||60.12||

||Sloka 60.13||

तस्माद्गच्छाम वै सर्वे यत्र रामः स लक्ष्मणः।

सुग्रीवश्च महातेजाः कार्यस्य निवेदने॥60.13||

स॥ तस्मात् वै सर्वे कार्यस्य निवेदने यत्र रामः स लक्ष्मणः सुग्रीवश्च महातेजाः (तत्र) गछ्छामः॥

॥Sloka meanings||

तस्मात् वै सर्वे - 

hence all of us 

कार्यस्य निवेदने -

 to convey what has been accomplished 

यत्र रामः स लक्ष्मणः सुग्रीवश्च महातेजाः - 

where Rama is along with Lakshmana and Sugriva  

(तत्र) गछ्छामः - 

we shall go 

||Sloka summary||

"Hence all of us, go to where Rama is along with Lakshmana and Sugriva to convey what has been accomplished ."||60.13||

||Sloka 60.14||

न तावदेषा मतिरक्षमानो 

यथा भवान्पश्यति राजपुत्त्र।

यथा तु रामस्य मतिर्निविष्टा

तथा भवान्पश्यतु कार्यसिद्धिम्॥60.14||

स॥  राजपुत्र यथा भवान्पश्यति एषा मतिः नः न अक्षमा। यथा तु रामस्य मतिः निविष्टा तथा कार्यसिद्धिं भवान् पश्यतु॥

Tilaka Tika says-  अथ जाम्बवान् अंगद क्रोथपरिहाराय तन्मतं बहुमान्य सुहृत् भावेन निवर्तयति  - नतावत् इति। हेराजपुत्र यथा भवान् पश्यति विचारयति एषा मतिः नः  अस्माकं  अक्षमा न, किन्तु युक्तैव। यथा रामस्य मतिः निर्विष्टा अवस्थिता तथा कार्यसिद्धिं भवान् पश्यतु इत्यर्थः॥ 

Govindaraja Tika says - अथ जांबवान् अंगदवाक्यं बहु मन्यमानः सुहृत् भावेन प्रतिषेदति - न तावत् इति। अक्षमा अयुक्ता नकिंतु युक्तेवैति इत्यर्थः।  यद्यपि सम्यगुक्तं समर्थैश्चापि रामाज्ञानुसारेण कर्तव्यं  न स्वातन्त्र्येण इत्यर्थः॥

॥Sloka meanings||

राजपुत्र यथा भवान्पश्यति - 

O prince , whatever you have projected 

एषा मतिः नः न अक्षमा - 

that thought is not inappropriate 

यथा तु रामस्य मतिः निविष्टा - 

but knowing the mind of Rama 

तथा कार्यसिद्धिं भवान् पश्यतु - 

you should act in that way to accomplish the task 

||Sloka summary||

"Oh Prince, though your suggestion is not inappropriate , but knowing the mind of Rama and then act in that way to ensure victory".||60.14||

With that very balanced suggestion of Jambavan Sarga numbered sixty comes to an end .

चतुर्विंशत् सहस्रिकायां संहितायाम्

श्रीमत्सुंदरकांडे षष्टितमस्सर्गः ||
