Sarga 60


"tathā bhavān paśyatu kāryasiddhiṁ"  ; "you see how the task can be successfully completed" The task is to be completed , the way it is in the mind of Rama. These are words of Jambavan.


Hanuma, forgetting Sita's words, said that many of the Vanaras can accomplish the task of killing Ravana. Hence he said that it is better they carry Sita with them to Rama. At the end though, Hanuma left the decision to the others.


Angada takes that thought further, and insists that they go to Rama only along with Sita. Angada is the prince. His word cannot be set aside easily 


Jambavan is an old wise man. He knows how to move the things. So, he tells Angada, that he is right. But reminds everybody about the original plan. All of this is happening because of Rama. Now also they need to know what is in Rama's mind. Only after that next course of action can be finalized.


This is what we hear from Valmiki in this Sarga.


Now we will go through the Slokas of Sarga number sixty..


||Sloka 60.01||

tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā vālisūnurabhāṣata|

ayuktaṁ tu vinā dēvīṁ  dr̥ṣṭavadbhiśca vānarāḥ||60.01||

samīpaṁ gantumasmābhī rāghavasya mahātmanaḥ|


sa|| tasya hanumatasya tat vacanaṁ śrutvā vāli sūnuḥ abhāṣata|| vānarāḥ dr̥ṣṭavadbhiḥ asmābhiḥ dēvī vinā mahātmanaḥ rāghavasya samīpaṁ gaṁtuṁ ayuktaṁ tu||

tasya hanumatasya tat vacanaṁ śrutvā - 

hearing those words of Hanuman 

vāli sūnuḥ abhāṣata - Vali’s son spoke

vānarāḥ dr̥ṣṭavadbhiḥ asmābhiḥ - 

Vanaras, by us who have seen Sita 

mahātmanaḥ rāghavasya samīpaṁ -

 near great soul Rama 

dēvī vinā gaṁtuṁ ayuktaṁ tu - 

going without Sita is not proper

"Hearing those words of Hanuman , Vali’s son spoke. ‘Vanaras, though Sita was seen, going to Rama without Sita is not proper". ||60.01|| 


||Sloka 60.02||


dr̥ṣṭādēvī na cā’’nītā iti tatra nivēdanam||60.02||

ayuktamiva paśyāmi bhavadbhiḥ khyātavikramaiḥ|


sa|| khyātavikramaiḥ bhavadbhiḥ dēvī dr̥ṣṭā na ānītā ca iti tatra nivēdituṁ ayuktaṁ iva paśyāmi||

khyātavikramaiḥ bhavadbhiḥ -

 by you who are known as powerful 

dēvī dr̥ṣṭā na ānītā ca -

 Sita was seen but not brought 

iti tatra nivēdituṁ - 

conveying that  there  

ayuktaṁ iva paśyāmi - 

I see it as inappropriate.


||Sloka summary||


"By you, who are known as powerful, conveying there that  Sita was seen but not brought, I see it as inappropriate." ||60.02||


||Sloka 60.03||


na hi naḥ plavanē kaścinnāpi kaścitparākramē||

tulyaḥ sāmaradaityēṣu lōkēṣu harisattamāḥ||60.03||


sa|| harisattamāḥ amara daityēṣu lōkēṣu  naḥ  plavanē kaścin  tulyaḥ na | parākramē api kaścin na|

||Sloka meanings||


harisattamāḥ - o best of Vanaras

amara daityēṣu lōkēṣu -

 among Devas or Daityas all over

naḥ  plavanē kaścin  tulyaḥ na - 

none who can equal us in flying 

parākramē api kaścin na- 

 in strength too none 


||Sloka summary||


"O best of Vanaras, there is none among Devas or Daityas who can equal us in our strength or in our ability flying in the sky". ||60.03||


||Sloka 60.04||


jitvā laṁkāṁ sarakṣaughāṁ hatvā taṁ rāvaṇaṁ raṇē

sītāmādāya gachchāmaḥ siddhārthā hr̥ṣṭamānasā ||60.04||


sa|| raṇē taṁ rāvaṇaṁ hatvā sarakṣaughāṁ laṁkāṁ jitvā sītāmādāya siddhārthā hr̥ṣṭamānasā gachchāmaḥ||

raṇē taṁ rāvaṇaṁ hatvā - 

killing Ravana in the battle 

sarakṣaughāṁ laṁkāṁ jitvā -

 conquering Lanka with all Rakshasas

sītāmādāya - rescue Sita

siddhārthā hr̥ṣṭamānasā gachchāmaḥ -

 achieve our goal and go happily


||Sloka summary||

 

"Killing Ravana in the battle along with all Rakshasas and conquering Lanka, we rescue Sita, achieve our goal and go happily ( and meet Rama) ".||60.04||


||Sloka 60.05||


tēṣvēvaṁ  hata vīrēṣu rākṣasēṣu hanūmatā|

kimanyadatrakartavyaṁ gr̥hītvā yāma jānakīṁ||60.05||


sa|| hanūmatā hata vīrēṣu rākṣasēṣu jānakīṁ gr̥hītvā rāma samīpaṁ yākṣānyat atra kiṁ kartavyaṁ||


Rama Tilaka says - tēṣvēti|| hanūmatā hataśēṣēṣu rākṣaśēṣu satsu jānakīṁ gr̥hītvā yāma rāma samīpaṁ yāma anyat hatō binnam atra  asmin samayē kiṁkartavyaṁ  idamēva kartavyaṁ ityarthaḥ||

hanūmatā hata vīrēṣu rākṣasēṣu -

 Hanuman killed many of those Rakshasas

jānakīṁ gr̥hītvā - taking Janaki 

rāma samīpaṁ yāma -

 going back Rama 

anyat atra kiṁ kartavyaṁ- 

what is the task left ?

"Hanuman has killed many of those Rakshasas. What is the task left other than bringing Sita and going back to Rama ?" ||60.05||


||Sloka 60.06||


rāmalakṣmaṇayōrmadhyē nyasyāma janakātmajām|

kiṁvyalīkaistu tān sarvān vānarān vānararṣabhān||60.06||


sa|| janakātmajām rāmalakṣmaṇayōrmadhyē nyasyāma |tān sarvān vānarān vānararṣabhān kiṁvyalīkaistu ||


Rama Tika says-  janakātmajām rāmalakṣmaṇayōrmadhyē nyasyāma saṁsthāpayāma | vānararṣabhān sarvān prati vyalīkaiḥ apriyaiḥ rāmādikartruka audāsīnyavacanaiḥ kiṁ, lana kimapi ityarthaḥ||

janakātmajām - Sita 

rāmalakṣmaṇayōrmadhyē nyasyāma - 

keep her in the middle of Rama and Lakshmana 

tān sarvān vānarān vānararṣabhān - 

all those Vanaras and the best among them  

kiṁvyalīkaistu - why should they be troubled ?


||Sloka summary||


"Let us bring back Sita to be in the middle of Rama and Lakshmana. All those Vanaras and the best among them, why should they be troubled ?" ||60.06||


||Sloka 60.07||


vayamēva hi gatvā tān hatvā rākṣasapuṁgavān|

rāghavaṁ draṣṭumarhāmaḥ sugrīvaṁ saha lakṣmaṇam||60.07||


sa|| vayamēva tān hatvā rākṣasapuṁgavān hi gatvā sugrīvaṁ lakṣmaṇam saha rāghavaṁ draṣṭumarhāmaḥ ||


||Sloka meanings||


vayamēva - we on our own 

gatvā tān hatvā rākṣasapuṁgavān - 

having gone and having killed all those Rakshasas

sugrīvaṁ lakṣmaṇam saha rāghavaṁ - 

Raghava along with Lakshmana and Sugriva 

draṣṭumarhāmaḥ- capable of seeing 


||Sloka summary||


"On our own having gone and having killed all those Rakshasas, we are capable of seeing Rama along with Lakshmana and Sugriva ."

||Sloka 60.08||


tamēvaṁ kr̥tasaṁkalpaṁ jāmbavān harisattamaḥ|

uvāca paramaprītō vākyamarthavadarthavit||60.08||


sa|| ēvaṁ kr̥tasaṁkalpaṁ taṁ jāmbavān harisattamaḥ paramaprītaḥ arthavit vākyaṁ uvāca||


||Sloka meanings||


ēvaṁ kr̥tasaṁkalpaṁ taṁ -

 them who have made up their minds 

jāmbavān harisattamaḥ - 

Jambavan, best among Vanaras

paramaprītaḥ arthavit vākyaṁ -  

with affection and with meaningful words 

uvāca - spoke 


||Sloka summary||


"Jambavan then spoke affectionately with meaningful words to that best of Vanaras, who made up his mind on the course of action." ||60.08||


||Sloka 60.09||


naiṣā buddhirmahābuddhē mahākapēmahākapē|

vicētuṁ vayamājñaptā dakṣiṇāṁ diśamuttamām||60.09||


sa|| mahābuddhē mahākapē na ēṣā buddhiḥ| vayaṁ dakṣiṇāṁ diśamuttamām vicētuṁ iti ājñaptā||


Rama Tika says- yataḥ dakṣiṇāṁ diśaṁ viccētuṁ ēva vayaṁ ājñaptāḥ nānētuṁ sītāṁ iti śēṣaḥ  ataḥ yatbravīṣi  tadviṣayaṇī ēṣā buddhiḥ niścayaḥ na kartavyēti śēṣaḥ |


||Sloka meanings||


mahābuddhē mahākapē - 

Oh, great Vanara

na ēṣā buddhiḥ -

 that thought is not appropriate

dakṣiṇāṁ diśamuttamām vicētuṁ -

 in the Southern direction to search 

iti vayaṁ ājñaptā- 

thus we were ordered 


||Sloka summary||


"Oh, great Vanara, that thought is not appropriate. We were ordered to go in the Southern direction in search of Sita". ||60.09||


Jambavan is referring to the thought of bringing Sita too and then going to Rama. That he says is inappropriate. he gives reasons.


||Sloka 60.10||


nānētuṁ kapirājēna naiva rāmēṇa dhīmatā|

kathaṁcinnirjitāṁ sītāṁ asmābhirnābhirōcayēt||60.10||


sa|| sītāṁ nānētuṁ kapirājēna dhīmatā rāmēṇa na ēvaṁ ( kathitā) | kathaṁcit  asmābhiḥ nirjitām ( tathāpi) na abhirōcayēt|


||Sloka meanings||


sītāṁ anētuṁ - bring back Sita  

kapirājēna dhīmatā rāmēṇa na ēvaṁ ( kathitā) - 

not said by king of Vanaras and sagacious Rama 

kathaṁcit  asmābhiḥ nirjitām- even if we are victorious 

( tathāpi) na abhirōcayēt - may not be very happy 


||Sloka summary||


‘Bringing her back was not mentioned by the king of Vanaras or sagacious Rama. Gaining victory in some way and carrying her back may not be liked ||60.11||


||Sloka 60.11||


rāghavō nr̥paśārdūlaḥ kulaṁ vyapadiśan svakam|

pratijñāya svayaṁ rājā sītā vijayamagrataḥ||60.11||

sarvēṣāṁ kapimukhyānāṁ kathaṁ mithyā kariṣyati|


sa|| nr̥paśārdūlaḥ rāghavō svakam kulaṁ vyapadiśan | svayaṁ rājā sītā vijayaṁ sarvēṣāṁ kapimukhyānāṁ agrataḥ pratijñāya kathaṁ mithyā kariṣyati ||


Tilaka Tika says  - agrataḥ kapimukhyānāṁ agrataḥ|


Rama Tika says - pratijñāyēti|| kapimukhyānāṁ agrataḥ svakaṁ svasaṁpādyaṁ sītāvijayaṁ sītāhētuka svakartruka rāvaṇa parābhava pūrvaka pratijñāya svōtkarṣaprāptiṁ mithyā kathaṁ kariṣyati , na kariṣyati ityarthaḥ| asya tasya rāmasya tuṣṭiḥ na bhavēt| ataḥ kr̥taṁ api karma viphalaṁ bhavēt|

nr̥paśārdūlaḥ - lion among princes 

rāghavō svakam kulaṁ vyapadiśan - 

Raghava referring to his illustrious lineage 

svayaṁ rājā sītā vijayaṁ - 

to bring back Sita victoriously by himself 

sarvēṣāṁ kapimukhyānāṁ agrataḥ pratijñāya- 

having taken a vow in front of all Vanara leaders

kathaṁ mithyā kariṣyati -

 how can he not let it happen?


||Sloka summary||


"Raghava, lion among princes, referring to his illustrious lineage, himself took a vow to gain victory and bring back Sita. How can he not let it happen? ". ||60.11||



||Sloka 60.12||


viphalaṁ karma ca kr̥taṁ bhavēt tuṣṭirna tasya ca||

vr̥thā ca darśitaṁ vīryaṁ bhavēdvānarapuṁgavāḥ||60.12||


sa||  kr̥taṁ karma ca viphalaṁ bhavēt| tasya tuṣṭiḥ na ca| vānarapuṁgavāḥ darśitaṁ vīryaṁ vr̥thā ca bhavēt|


||Sloka meanings||


kr̥taṁ karma ca viphalaṁ bhavēt - 

action done in opposition will be a failure

tasya tuṣṭiḥ na ca - 

not lead to happiness

vānarapuṁgavāḥ darśitaṁ vīryaṁ - 

courage shown in doing so by Vanara warriors 

vr̥thā ca bhavēt- 

would also be a wasted effort


||Sloka summary||


" Any action in opposition will be a failure and will not lead to happiness. The courage shown in doing so would also be a wasted effort".||60.12||


||Sloka 60.13||


tasmādgacchāma vai sarvē yatra rāmaḥ sa lakṣmaṇaḥ|

sugrīvaśca mahātējāḥ kāryasya nivēdanē||60.13||


sa|| tasmāt vai sarvē kāryasya nivēdanē yatra rāmaḥ sa lakṣmaṇaḥ sugrīvaśca mahātējāḥ (tatra) gachchāmaḥ||

tasmāt vai sarvē - 

hence all of us 

kāryasya nivēdanē -

 to convey what has been accomplished 

yatra rāmaḥ sa lakṣmaṇaḥ sugrīvaśca mahātējāḥ - 

where Rama is along with Lakshmana and Sugriva  

(tatra) gachchāmaḥ - 

we shall go 


||Sloka summary||


"Hence all of us, go to where Rama is along with Lakshmana and Sugriva to convey what has been accomplished ."||60.13||


||Sloka 60.14||


na tāvadēṣā matirakṣamānō 

yathā bhavānpaśyati rājaputtra|

yathā tu rāmasya matirniviṣṭā

tathā bhavānpaśyatu kāryasiddhim||60.14||


sa||  rājaputra yathā bhavānpaśyati ēṣā matiḥ naḥ na akṣamā| yathā tu rāmasya matiḥ niviṣṭā tathā kāryasiddhiṁ bhavān paśyatu||


Tilaka Tika says-  atha jāmbavān aṁgada krōthaparihārāya tanmataṁ bahumānya suhr̥t bhāvēna nivartayati  - natāvat iti| hērājaputra yathā bhavān paśyati vicārayati ēṣā matiḥ naḥ  asmākaṁ  akṣamā na, kintu yuktaiva| yathā rāmasya matiḥ nirviṣṭā avasthitā tathā kāryasiddhiṁ bhavān paśyatu ityarthaḥ|| 


Govindaraja Tika says - atha jāṁbavān aṁgadavākyaṁ bahu manyamānaḥ suhr̥t bhāvēna pratiṣēdati - na tāvat iti| akṣamā ayuktā nakiṁtu yuktēvaiti ityarthaḥ|  yadyapi samyaguktaṁ samarthaiścāpi rāmājñānusārēṇa kartavyaṁ  na svātantryēṇa ityarthaḥ||

rājaputra yathā bhavānpaśyati - 

O prince , whatever you have projected 

ēṣā matiḥ naḥ na akṣamā - 

that thought is not inappropriate 

yathā tu rāmasya matiḥ niviṣṭā - 

but knowing the mind of Rama 

tathā kāryasiddhiṁ bhavān paśyatu - 

you should act in that way to accomplish the task 


||Sloka summary||


"Oh Prince, though your suggestion is not inappropriate , but knowing the mind of Rama and then act in that way to ensure victory".||60.14||


With that very balanced suggestion of Jambavan Sarga numbered sixty comes to an end .


 ityārṣē śrīmadrāmāyaṇē ādikāvyē vālmīkīyē 

caturviṁśat sahasrikāyāṁ saṁhitāyām

śrīmatsuṁdarakāṁḍē ṣaṣṭitamassargaḥ ||
