Sarga 60

"તથા ભવાન્ પશ્યતુ કાર્યસિદ્ધિં"  ; "you see how the task can be successfully completed" The task is to be completed , the way it is in the mind of Rama. These are words of Jambavan.

Hanuma, forgetting Sita's words, said that many of the Vanaras can accomplish the task of killing Ravana. Hence he said that it is better they carry Sita with them to Rama. At the end though, Hanuma left the decision to the others.

Angada takes that thought further, and insists that they go to Rama only along with Sita. Angada is the prince. His word cannot be set aside easily 

Jambavan is an old wise man. He knows how to move the things. So, he tells Angada, that he is right. But reminds everybody about the original plan. All of this is happening because of Rama. Now also they need to know what is in Rama's mind. Only after that next course of action can be finalized.

This is what we hear from Valmiki in this Sarga.

Now we will go through the Slokas of Sarga number sixty..

||Sloka 60.01||

તસ્ય તદ્વચનં શ્રુત્વા વાલિસૂનુરભાષત|

અયુક્તં તુ વિના દેવીં  દૃષ્ટવદ્ભિશ્ચ વાનરાઃ||60.01||

સમીપં ગન્તુમસ્માભી રાઘવસ્ય મહાત્મનઃ|

સ|| તસ્ય હનુમતસ્ય તત્ વચનં શ્રુત્વા વાલિ સૂનુઃ અભાષત|| વાનરાઃ દૃષ્ટવદ્ભિઃ અસ્માભિઃ દેવી વિના મહાત્મનઃ રાઘવસ્ય સમીપં ગંતું અયુક્તં તુ||

તસ્ય હનુમતસ્ય તત્ વચનં શ્રુત્વા - 

hearing those words of Hanuman 

વાલિ સૂનુઃ અભાષત - Vali’s son spoke

વાનરાઃ દૃષ્ટવદ્ભિઃ અસ્માભિઃ - 

Vanaras, by us who have seen Sita 

મહાત્મનઃ રાઘવસ્ય સમીપં -

 near great soul Rama 

દેવી વિના ગંતું અયુક્તં તુ - 

going without Sita is not proper

દૃષ્ટાદેવી ન ચાઽઽનીતા ઇતિ તત્ર નિવેદનમ્||60.02||

અયુક્તમિવ પશ્યામિ ભવદ્ભિઃ ખ્યાતવિક્રમૈઃ|

સ|| ખ્યાતવિક્રમૈઃ ભવદ્ભિઃ દેવી દૃષ્ટા ન આનીતા ચ ઇતિ તત્ર નિવેદિતું અયુક્તં ઇવ પશ્યામિ||

ખ્યાતવિક્રમૈઃ ભવદ્ભિઃ -

 by you who are known as powerful 

દેવી દૃષ્ટા ન આનીતા ચ -

 Sita was seen but not brought 

ઇતિ તત્ર નિવેદિતું - 

conveying that  there  

અયુક્તં ઇવ પશ્યામિ - 

I see it as inappropriate.

"By you, who are known as powerful, conveying there that  Sita was seen but not brought, I see it as inappropriate." ||60.02||

ન હિ નઃ પ્લવને કશ્ચિન્નાપિ કશ્ચિત્પરાક્રમે||

તુલ્યઃ સામરદૈત્યેષુ લોકેષુ હરિસત્તમાઃ||60.03||

હરિસત્તમાઃ - o best of Vanaras

અમર દૈત્યેષુ લોકેષુ -

 among Devas or Daityas all over

નઃ  પ્લવને કશ્ચિન્  તુલ્યઃ ન - 

none who can equal us in flying 

પરાક્રમે અપિ કશ્ચિન્ ન- 

 in strength too none

"O best of Vanaras, there is none among Devas or Daityas who can equal us in our strength or in our ability flying in the sky". ||60.03||

||Sloka 60.04||

જિત્વા લંકાં સરક્ષૌઘાં હત્વા તં રાવણં રણે

સીતામાદાય ગછ્છામઃ સિદ્ધાર્થા હૃષ્ટમાનસા ||60.04||

સ|| રણે તં રાવણં હત્વા સરક્ષૌઘાં લંકાં જિત્વા સીતામાદાય સિદ્ધાર્થા હૃષ્ટમાનસા ગછ્છામઃ||

રણે તં રાવણં હત્વા - 

killing Ravana in the battle 

સરક્ષૌઘાં લંકાં જિત્વા -

 conquering Lanka with all Rakshasas

સીતામાદાય - rescue Sita

સિદ્ધાર્થા હૃષ્ટમાનસા ગછ્છામઃ -

 achieve our goal and go happily

"Killing Ravana in the battle along with all Rakshasas and conquering Lanka, we rescue Sita, achieve our goal and go happily ( and meet Rama) ".||60.04||

તેષ્વેવં  હત વીરેષુ રાક્ષસેષુ હનૂમતા|

કિમન્યદત્રકર્તવ્યં ગૃહીત્વા યામ જાનકીં||60.05||

સ|| હનૂમતા હત વીરેષુ રાક્ષસેષુ જાનકીં ગૃહીત્વા રામ સમીપં યાક્ષાન્યત્ અત્ર કિં કર્તવ્યં||

Rama Tilaka says - તેષ્વેતિ|| હનૂમતા હતશેષેષુ રાક્ષશેષુ સત્સુ જાનકીં ગૃહીત્વા યામ રામ સમીપં યામ અન્યત્ હતો બિન્નમ્ અત્ર  અસ્મિન્ સમયે કિંકર્તવ્યં  ઇદમેવ કર્તવ્યં ઇત્યર્થઃ||

હનૂમતા હત વીરેષુ રાક્ષસેષુ -

 Hanuman killed many of those Rakshasas

જાનકીં ગૃહીત્વા - taking Janaki

Rama Tika says-  જનકાત્મજામ્ રામલક્ષ્મણયોર્મધ્યે ન્યસ્યામ સંસ્થાપયામ | વાનરર્ષભાન્ સર્વાન્ પ્રતિ વ્યલીકૈઃ અપ્રિયૈઃ રામાદિકર્ત્રુક ઔદાસીન્યવચનૈઃ કિં, લન કિમપિ ઇત્યર્થઃ||

જનકાત્મજામ્ - Sita 

રામલક્ષ્મણયોર્મધ્યે ન્યસ્યામ - 

keep her in the middle of Rama and Lakshmana 

તાન્ સર્વાન્ વાનરાન્ વાનરર્ષભાન્ - 

all those Vanaras and the best among them  

કિંવ્યલીકૈસ્તુ - why should they be troubled ?

"Let us bring back Sita to be in the middle of Rama and Lakshmana. All those Vanaras and the best among them, why should they be troubled ?" ||60.06||

||Sloka 60.07||

વયમેવ હિ ગત્વા તાન્ હત્વા રાક્ષસપુંગવાન્|

રાઘવં દ્રષ્ટુમર્હામઃ સુગ્રીવં સહ લક્ષ્મણમ્||60.07||

સ|| વયમેવ તાન્ હત્વા રાક્ષસપુંગવાન્ હિ ગત્વા સુગ્રીવં લક્ષ્મણમ્ સહ રાઘવં દ્રષ્ટુમર્હામઃ ||

વયમેવ - we on our own 

ગત્વા તાન્ હત્વા રાક્ષસપુંગવાન્ - 

having gone and having killed all those Rakshasas

સુગ્રીવં લક્ષ્મણમ્ સહ રાઘવં - 

Raghava along with Lakshmana and Sugriva 

દ્રષ્ટુમર્હામઃ- capable of seeing

"On our own having gone and having killed all those Rakshasas, we are capable of seeing Rama along with Lakshmana and Sugriva ."

તમેવં કૃતસંકલ્પં જામ્બવાન્ હરિસત્તમઃ|

ઉવાચ પરમપ્રીતો વાક્યમર્થવદર્થવિત્||60.08||

સ|| એવં કૃતસંકલ્પં તં જામ્બવાન્ હરિસત્તમઃ પરમપ્રીતઃ અર્થવિત્ વાક્યં ઉવાચ||

એવં કૃતસંકલ્પં તં -

 them who have made up their minds 

જામ્બવાન્ હરિસત્તમઃ - 

Jambavan, best among Vanaras

પરમપ્રીતઃ અર્થવિત્ વાક્યં -  

with affection and with meaningful words 

ઉવાચ - spoke

"Jambavan then spoke affectionately with meaningful words to that best of Vanaras, who made up his mind on the course of action." ||60.08||

||Sloka 60.09||

નૈષા બુદ્ધિર્મહાબુદ્ધે મહાકપેમહાકપે|

વિચેતું વયમાજ્ઞપ્તા દક્ષિણાં દિશમુત્તમામ્||60.09||

સ|| મહાબુદ્ધે મહાકપે ન એષા બુદ્ધિઃ| વયં દક્ષિણાં દિશમુત્તમામ્ વિચેતું ઇતિ આજ્ઞપ્તા||

Rama Tika says- યતઃ દક્ષિણાં દિશં વિચ્ચેતું એવ વયં આજ્ઞપ્તાઃ નાનેતું સીતાં ઇતિ શેષઃ  અતઃ યત્બ્રવીષિ  તદ્વિષયણી એષા બુદ્ધિઃ નિશ્ચયઃ ન કર્તવ્યેતિ શેષઃ |

મહાબુદ્ધે મહાકપે - 

Oh, great Vanara

ન એષા બુદ્ધિઃ -

 that thought is not appropriate

દક્ષિણાં દિશમુત્તમામ્ વિચેતું -

 in the Southern direction to search 

ઇતિ વયં આજ્ઞપ્તા- 

thus we were ordered 

||Sloka summary||

"Oh, great Vanara, that thought is not appropriate. We were ordered to go in the Southern direction in search of Sita". ||60.09||

Jambavan is referring to the thought of bringing Sita too and then going to Rama. That he says is inappropriate. he gives reasons.

||Sloka 60.10||

નાનેતું કપિરાજેન નૈવ રામેણ ધીમતા|

કથંચિન્નિર્જિતાં સીતાં અસ્માભિર્નાભિરોચયેત્||60.10||

સ|| સીતાં નાનેતું કપિરાજેન ધીમતા રામેણ ન એવં ( કથિતા) | કથંચિત્  અસ્માભિઃ નિર્જિતામ્ ( તથાપિ) ન અભિરોચયેત્|

સીતાં અનેતું - bring back Sita  

કપિરાજેન ધીમતા રામેણ ન એવં ( કથિતા) - 

not said by king of Vanaras and sagacious Rama 

કથંચિત્  અસ્માભિઃ નિર્જિતામ્- even if we are victorious 

( તથાપિ) ન અભિરોચયેત્ - may not be very happy 

||Sloka summary||

‘Bringing her back was not mentioned by the king of Vanaras or sagacious Rama. Gaining victory in some way and carrying her back may not be liked ||60.11||

||Sloka 60.11||

રાઘવો નૃપશાર્દૂલઃ કુલં વ્યપદિશન્ સ્વકમ્|

પ્રતિજ્ઞાય સ્વયં રાજા સીતા વિજયમગ્રતઃ||60.11||

સર્વેષાં કપિમુખ્યાનાં કથં મિથ્યા કરિષ્યતિ|

સ|| નૃપશાર્દૂલઃ રાઘવો સ્વકમ્ કુલં વ્યપદિશન્ | સ્વયં રાજા સીતા વિજયં સર્વેષાં કપિમુખ્યાનાં અગ્રતઃ પ્રતિજ્ઞાય કથં મિથ્યા કરિષ્યતિ ||

નૃપશાર્દૂલઃ - lion among princes 

રાઘવો સ્વકમ્ કુલં વ્યપદિશન્ - 

Raghava referring to his illustrious lineage 

સ્વયં રાજા સીતા વિજયં - 

to bring back Sita victoriously by himself 

સર્વેષાં કપિમુખ્યાનાં અગ્રતઃ પ્રતિજ્ઞાય- 

having taken a vow in front of all Vanara leaders

કથં મિથ્યા કરિષ્યતિ -

 how can he not let it happen?

||Sloka summary||

"Raghava, lion among princes, referring to his illustrious lineage, himself took a vow to gain victory and bring back Sita. How can he not let it happen? ". ||60.11||

||Sloka 60.12||

વિફલં કર્મ ચ કૃતં ભવેત્ તુષ્ટિર્ન તસ્ય ચ||

વૃથા ચ દર્શિતં વીર્યં ભવેદ્વાનરપુંગવાઃ||60.12||

સ||  કૃતં કર્મ ચ વિફલં ભવેત્| તસ્ય તુષ્ટિઃ ન ચ| વાનરપુંગવાઃ દર્શિતં વીર્યં વૃથા ચ ભવેત્|

કૃતં કર્મ ચ વિફલં ભવેત્ - 

action done in opposition will be a failure

તસ્ય તુષ્ટિઃ ન ચ - 

not lead to happiness

વાનરપુંગવાઃ દર્શિતં વીર્યં - 

courage shown in doing so by Vanara warriors 

વૃથા ચ ભવેત્- 

would also be a wasted effort

||Sloka summary||

" Any action in opposition will be a failure and will not lead to happiness. The courage shown in doing so would also be a wasted effort".||60.12||

તસ્માદ્ગચ્છામ વૈ સર્વે યત્ર રામઃ સ લક્ષ્મણઃ|

સુગ્રીવશ્ચ મહાતેજાઃ કાર્યસ્ય નિવેદને||60.13||

સ|| તસ્માત્ વૈ સર્વે કાર્યસ્ય નિવેદને યત્ર રામઃ સ લક્ષ્મણઃ સુગ્રીવશ્ચ મહાતેજાઃ (તત્ર) ગછ્છામઃ||

તસ્માત્ વૈ સર્વે - 

hence all of us 

કાર્યસ્ય નિવેદને -

 to convey what has been accomplished 

યત્ર રામઃ સ લક્ષ્મણઃ સુગ્રીવશ્ચ મહાતેજાઃ - 

where Rama is along with Lakshmana and Sugriva  

(તત્ર) ગછ્છામઃ - 

we shall go

"Hence all of us, go to where Rama is along with Lakshmana and Sugriva to convey what has been accomplished ."||60.13||

||Sloka 60.14||

ન તાવદેષા મતિરક્ષમાનો 

યથા ભવાન્પશ્યતિ રાજપુત્ત્ર|

યથા તુ રામસ્ય મતિર્નિવિષ્ટા

તથા ભવાન્પશ્યતુ કાર્યસિદ્ધિમ્||60.14||

સ||  રાજપુત્ર યથા ભવાન્પશ્યતિ એષા મતિઃ નઃ ન અક્ષમા| યથા તુ રામસ્ય મતિઃ નિવિષ્ટા તથા કાર્યસિદ્ધિં ભવાન્ પશ્યતુ||

Tilaka Tika says-  અથ જામ્બવાન્ અંગદ ક્રોથપરિહારાય તન્મતં બહુમાન્ય સુહૃત્ ભાવેન નિવર્તયતિ  - નતાવત્ ઇતિ| હેરાજપુત્ર યથા ભવાન્ પશ્યતિ વિચારયતિ એષા મતિઃ નઃ  અસ્માકં  અક્ષમા ન, કિન્તુ યુક્તૈવ| યથા રામસ્ય મતિઃ નિર્વિષ્ટા અવસ્થિતા તથા કાર્યસિદ્ધિં ભવાન્ પશ્યતુ ઇત્યર્થઃ|| 

Govindaraja Tika says - અથ જાંબવાન્ અંગદવાક્યં બહુ મન્યમાનઃ સુહૃત્ ભાવેન પ્રતિષેદતિ - ન તાવત્ ઇતિ| અક્ષમા અયુક્તા નકિંતુ યુક્તેવૈતિ ઇત્યર્થઃ|  યદ્યપિ સમ્યગુક્તં સમર્થૈશ્ચાપિ રામાજ્ઞાનુસારેણ કર્તવ્યં  ન સ્વાતન્ત્ર્યેણ ઇત્યર્થઃ||

રાજપુત્ર યથા ભવાન્પશ્યતિ - 

O prince , whatever you have projected 

એષા મતિઃ નઃ ન અક્ષમા - 

that thought is not inappropriate 

યથા તુ રામસ્ય મતિઃ નિવિષ્ટા - 

but knowing the mind of Rama 

તથા કાર્યસિદ્ધિં ભવાન્ પશ્યતુ - 

you should act in that way to accomplish the task 

||Sloka summary||

"Oh Prince, though your suggestion is not inappropriate , but knowing the mind of Rama and then act in that way to ensure victory".||60.14||

With that very balanced suggestion of Jambavan Sarga numbered sixty comes to an end .
