1.2 The Katho Upanishad ( contd)

The Kathopanishad starts with the story of a Rishi Vajasravas and his son Nachiketa. The dialog of Nachiketa with Lord Yama carries the message of the Upanishad.

Rishi Vajasravas performs 'Viswajit' sacrifice which involves giving away all his wealth. His Nachiketa notices that his father is giving away gifts( cows) which are of no use. Very much concerned and trying to grab the attention of his father he asks his father to whom will he give 'Nachiketa'. Father being busy with the rituals and with without realizing says "to death". There upon to keep his fathers word Nachiketa moves to Yama's world. Yama was away when Nachiketa reaches the place. He waits for three nights till Yama returns. Alerted that a Brahman was waiting for him for three days without partaking anything as a guest , Yama offers him three boons for the three nights he waited. For the first boon Nachiketa wants to understand the Fire sacrifice and for the Second boon he wants that his Father be free of anxiety and be happy . Both the boons being granted Nachiketa asks for the third boon the knowledge about "hereafter". Nachiketa says that some say there is life after death some say not and he wants to know what happens after death. Yama tries to dissuade him with all sorts of worldly boons. Nachiketa could not be deterred. Yama tells him even Devas do not know, it is too difficult to understand . Nachiketa still insists on the knowledge then Yama relents.

So the kathopanishad continue into Valli two of First Adhyaya ..

Yama continues.

' The good is one thing and pleasant is another. The two have have different ends and bind the man. It is well with him who chooses good . But the one who chooses pleasant misses the True goal.

'Both 'Good' and 'Pleasant' approach the man. The intelligent one understanding fully, separates the 'Good' from 'Pleasant' and selects the 'Good'. The unintelligent man for the growth and protection of the body selects 'Pleasant'.

'O Nachiketa you have discarded the 'Pleasant' in favor of 'Good'. Indeed the ignorance and the wisdom lead you in opposite directions. O Nachiketa I consider you to be a true aspirant of Knowledge.

Fools living in ignorance , yet imagining themselves to be wise go round and round like the blind led by a blind. The thought of 'hereafter' never arises for the ignorant deluded by glamour and wealth. They think.

"this is the world and there is no other ( nothing else !!)'.

Special issue on Hanuman ( continues)!

Welcome to March 2 2012 issue .

... 'This word is Supreme. Whoever meditates on this word obtains all he desires.This word is the best support. He who knows this support achieves what ever he desires....

Thus starts the teaching of Yama on the word "om" .

The Katha Upanishad moves into the 2nd Valli( part) of Ist Adhyaya. Some of the tougher concepts emerge. Two thoughts are introduced. The word "om" as the key to discovery. The second is about Atma (soul) which he says cannot be undesrstood by study.

This issue however continues the series on the Role Models from Ramayana with Hanuman as the focus.

"Vikrantah tvam samardhah tvam" says Sita .

"Kritam Hanumata karyam" says Sri R ama.

"Tvayyeva Hanuman asti balam buddhi parakramah" says Sugriva.

Such is the awe inspiring part played by Hanuman! Like millions we are forever in love with Hanuman. So much so that we had earlier presented a two part series in praise of Hanuman Hanuamastuti Part 1 and Hanumastuti Part 2 . In a sense this issue is a continuation of our very first efforts.

In the Ramayana Role models we are looking at Hanuman as an embodiment of selfless service. The lead article on Ramayana in this issue is contributed by Turaga and is thus titled "Hanuman- The embodiment of Selfless service ". And this appears under Ramayan

No single article can cover all the deeds of Hanuman and we were tempted to add some more . We added two more articles on Hanuman. One is under the title 'In the thick of the Battle", which brings out an interesting side story during the battle in Lanka when everything is seemingly lost. Jambavan himself was almost dead. He was unable to see. He was not even sure who is alive and could recognize Vibhishana by his voice only. Jambavan asks Vibhishana if Hanuman is alive? . Vibhishana was surprised and asks Jambavan why he is asking about Hanuman and not about the two Brothers Rama and Lakshmana or even the King Sugriva or the Prince Angada ? The answer is the story and it appears on the Ramayana page .

We also cannot forget the "Jaya mantra" the battle cry of Hanuman in Lanka. Millions know this and this is brought out under "one more thing". Sita's favorite is Hanuman, that is well known. Rama too is touched by the selfless service of Hanuman. And his famous last words to Hanuman remain prophetic:

"As long as Rama's story is told and retold amongst men, so long shall your kirti (fame) form part of it."

Bhagavatam Chapter 82 of Dasama Skandha. It is a description of the meeting of virtually all people referred to in Bhagavatam Dasama Skandha. This in includes Pandavas and Kauravas and all those warrior kings who participated in the Kurukshetra war.The Solar eclipse of those days brought all of them together at Syamantapanchaka. . This chapter also brings to close the story of Gopis when Gopis get instructed by Lord Sri Krishna about his real selfand their relationship with him.The Last sloka says " Having been thus instructed by the Lord, the Gopis by constant meditation eradicated the mask on the soul, understood the Lord fully".

Athato Brahmajignyasaa this week continues with the elaboration of "Kathopanishad 1.2. The elaboration/ teaching on " Atman" and "Brahman" comes along as part of a story of Nachiketa's quest for knowledge.

One More thing

Jaya mantram...

This is the Famous 'Jaya mantra". Hanuman announces his presence in Ashokvan to get the attention of Ravana.

The authority with which he announces himself is indeed contagious. Seemingly he achieves success by announcing himself as the servant of Rama . he lets go a roar " Victory to Rama". that roar itself disheartens the enemies!

The mystique of these slokas is that it is sung in First person. Hanuman says it in First person. "Dasoham Kausalendrasya.... When we recite we are automatically reciting in First Person. The sloka becomes ours and we are saying "Dasoham Kausalendrasya..! I suppose that sentence making ourselves a Rama Bhakta and hailing the victory of Rama provides a contagious self belief leading to victory.

We might as well recite. The energy it gives is worth its purpose.
