Chapter21

Hearing the words of the fearsome Rakshasa, Sita who was already afflicted replied gently and softly

Placing a blade of grass between herself and Ravana Sita replied." Withdraw your mind from me and let it dwell on your own women . You do not deserve to win me anymore than a sinner seeking to win moksha. I was born in the line of King Janaka and I am the virtuous wife of SriRama. The lowly act deprecated by a worthy wife is beyond me "

Then turning her back towards Ravana indicating her disgust Sita continued

"Take into account the rule of conduct of virtuous and follow the conduct of virtuous. Others wives too need protection in the same way as your own. Making a model of your self delight in your own wife. The one who is not satisfied with his own wife will be humiliated by other women. Either there are no pious men here or you do not follow them because your mind is so perverse and moved away from the right conduct . Or you do not listen to whole-some advice tendered by wise. You are bent on leading the Rakshasa race to its destruction. Having found as as their ruler one who has not been able to control his mind and who is given to unrighteous conduct, the affluent Kingdoms and cities go to ruin. Similarly the city of Lanka with its riches will perish before long for the fault of one individual . All beings rejoice over the destruction of that short sighted person who is given to sinful deeds"

Sita continued

"It is not possible to tempt me with power or riches. Even as luster of Sun can be separated from Sun I cannot be separated from SriRama. Having rested on the honored arm of that Lord of people , how can I rest on the arm of anyone else . I am the lawful wife of the ruler of the earth even as the knowledge of veda belongs to that one who has realized Brahman . Unite me with SriRama as one would unite a Lordly elephant with a female elephant in heat in the forest."

" Meet the jewel among men and make friends with him if you want to preserve your fortress and if you do not wish to suffer terrible bondage . He is the knower of all virtues and protective of those who take shelter from him. If you desire to live make friendship with him. Your welfare lies thus in restoring me to to SriRama. Acting otherwise you will meet adversity."

" The thunderbolt may spare you even through discharged, the death may spare a wrong doer like you. But the scion of Raghu will not spare you when enraged. You will soon hear the twang of Rama's bow producing great noise like the crash of thunderbolt hurled by Indra. Well pointed arrows of SriRama and Lakshmana will soon rain on this city of Lank like serpents with flaming jaws. The arrows raining on this city will exterminate Rakshasas and leave no space uncovered."

" My husband SriRama will recover me from you like the Maha Vishnu recovered the globe form the demons in there strides . Host of demons in Janasthana having been destroyed , and with your foothold in Janasthana having been lost, you perpetrated this wicked deed. O Vile Rakshasa! I was carried away by you by entering the lonely hermitage of the two brothers when they were out . It is not possible for you stand within the sight of Rama and Lakshmana much like a dog that dare not tarry in the presence of Tigers. Soon that Lord of mine, SriRama, with Lakshmana will take your life away . Even if you go to the mountains or the abode of Kubera , or to the assembly of Varuna you cannot escape the arrows of SriRama like the huge tree felled by the lightning .

Thus ends Sundarakanda Chapter 21.
