Kathopanishad 2.3 Valli 6

( Note- This is continuation of our Kathopanishad series . the last one kathopanishad 2.2 covered valli 5. This is the last valli number 6 . This is being covered in two parts. this is the part 2)

Yama takes Nachiketa through an inward pilgrimage beyond the senses beyond the self to the unmanifest and innermost essence. That is the attainment of immortality. But this travel is experiencing and attaining not seeing.

Yama continues:

“His form is not to be seen. No one can see him with eye. He is perceived by Heart, by the intellect and by mind. They who know this become immortal

When the five organs of perception become still, together with mind and when intellect becomes calm that is called the highest state.

The firm holding back of the senses is known as Yoga. Then one becomes free from all vagaries of mind. Yoga is subject to growth and decay “.

Control senses organs do not mean merely taking our sense organs from their sense objects. That is only half the battle. Success can be achieved in self control (Yoga) only when our minds are fixed firmly in concentration and meditation upon Atman. A true student of Vedanta knows full well that unless one is careful the control gained over senses might any time get lost in the tide of severe temptations.

Yama continues

“The self cannot be attained by speech, nor by mind, nor even by the eye, how can it be realized except by him who says ‘it exists'! “

No amount of arguments can help a seeker to reach the Absolute Truth of Atman. Every seeker will have to start his own pilgrimage with courage of conviction. When he realize the truth then he will say ‘it exists'! Self cannot be reached in any other way. The sense organs working under the control of Atman cannot turn themselves upon the very same atman and know him as one of the objects of cognition.

Yama continues

“The self is to be realized as existing and then as it really is. Of these the real nature of the self which is known as merely existing without any attributes becomes only evident to the seeker “

Existence as is or as manifested with form is known and understood. Realizing the existence of the unmanifest form of Atman or the pure state of being is the essence of self realization moment. He who reaches the state reaches the supreme goal.

Yam continues

“When all desires dwelling in the heart cease then the mortal becomes immortal and attains Brahman even in this form..When all the ties of the heart are asunder here, then the mortal becomes immortal. Such is the teaching of all Upanishads”

When the human being during his life time breaks asunder these bonds he in fact ends ignorance. This is “jeevan mukti” advocated by Advaita.

Yama continues

“There are hundred and one nerves of the heart. One of them penetrates the center of the head. Going upward through it one attains immortality. The other one hundred nerves lead in departing to different worlds. The Purusha the inner self of the size of the thumb is ever seated in the heart of all living beings. With perseverance man should draw him out from his body as one draws stalk from the blade of grass. One should know Him as pure and death less”.

Thus Nachiketa having acquired this wisdom taught by the King of death, together with all rules of Yoga free from impurity and death attained Brahman.

So also will it be with others who like wise know the nature of the Self.

May he protect us both? May he be pleased with us? May we acquire strength? May our study bring us illumination? May there be no enmity among us

This week we are covering 35th Chapter of Sundarakanda which has ninety slokas depending on which recension you are following ! More importantly this is the chapter where Rama's" excellences " are told . Since we wanted to cover all slokas detailing Rama's"excellences' the Sundarakanda Slokas we are carrying number nearly thirty . To make it easy to read this time we have separate page for Chapter 35 Slokas in Telugu and and Chapter 35 slokas in sanskrit

In the Sundarakanda the chapter 1, the chapter 35 and the chapter 58 are the three biggest chapters. And each has its own significance. My mother would tell me that reading Chapter 58 is like reading the whole of it ! So each person will have their favorite ways and means. We had earlier brought out a publication in Telugu with the title" Sri Raamudu - Sugunaabhi-Raamudu ", carrying Rama's "Gunas". This itself is an extract from "Tatva Dipika" by Bhashyam Appalacharyulu Garu of Vizag. This publication was blessed by Bhashyam Apalacharyulugaru with an introduction. The Telugu speaking friends can access the same to have taste of Appalaacharyulu garus writings. Shri Bhashyam Apalacharyulugaru was my Sanskrit Teacher in BSc and he remains my Guru in that mold !!

The extracts of an old book( 1899) by an Oxford Scholar on the History of Sanskrit Literature , are appearing under "one more thing" !!

This week Athato completes the Kathopanishad 2nd Adhyaya Part 3 or valli 6 We had started the Kathopanishad because it is exciting. It is a dialog on death. Also it is Yama himself teaching !! . So far we have covered Nachiketa's boon in Valli 1, Yama's teaching on good and pleasant as well as the word “om” in Valli 2, Knowledge of Atman in Valli2 (Sloka 21-25) and Valli 3 (Sloka 1-9). Valli 4 went through again nature of Self leading to perception and attainment of Unity. Valli 5 covered more of the nature of inner soul. Then we also added some more notes " good vs pleasant " , "Blind leading Blind" from Kathopanishad

What is on the kasarabada.org?

For the new visitors we thought of adding a few lines on navigation , so that they may know what is available on Kasarabada.org !

We now have 89 chapters of Dasama Skandha of Bhagavatam. All these chapters (stories on Krishna) are listed by name and are available on a link on the Bhagavatam page.

We have now 33 chapters of Sundarakanda and also complete bouquet of articles on Ramayana. Along the same lines are the earlier articles in praise of Hunuman 1 , Hanuman 2 and Valmiki Sundarakanda . Added to this bouquet is the Sundarakanda as a Telugu poem by Pandit Vijayraghavrao. We have also added some downloads specifically for the Sankshipta Sundarakanda ( with Sanskrit slokas) reproduced in different language scripts namely Sanskrit , Telugu , Kannada and Malayalam . There is also a Telugu Sundarakanda Katha for those interested in reading the same as a prose story !!,.

One more thing is a page where we get articles which could be on anything , informative and educative handled with a light heart and a touch of contemporary realities. The page lists all the earlier stories on its page

The last new column is Athato Brahma Jignyasaa . This page is focused on Indian Philosophy /Darsanas. This has been started a few months ago and all its earlier issues are listed on its page

Thus the dental consonants appear together as t , th , d , dh , n and the labials as p , ph , b , bh , m ".

“We Europeans, on the other hand, 2500 years later, and in a scientific age, still employ an alphabet which is not only inadequate to represent all the sounds of our languages, but even preserves the random order in which vowels and consonants are jumbled up as they were in the Greek adaptation of the primitive Semitic arrangement of 3000 years ago”.
