The son of Vajasravasa gave away everything .

Gautama is the son of Vajasravasa. He was desirous of attaining heaven. He gave away everything as part of a sacrifice for attaining heaven. Desire is the driving force. Karma kanda is the means.

“Have drunk water,

have eaten the grass,

yielded their milk and barren”.

That succinctly describes the type of cows Vajasravasa was giving away. They were virtually on their last legs. This is also what was noted by his sensitive son Nachiketa. Nachiketa realizes that people giving away such presents end up in going to joyless worlds after death . Young boy that he is, he is still aware of the Viswajita sacrifice wherein those desirous of the fruit (reaching heaven) give away all they own !

“To whom will you give me away”.

Nachiketa asks his father, “To whom will you give me away” . Knowing that his father has to give away everything he owns, though as a son he may not be sacrificed , he offers himself and asks his father as above. His father is indeed a well read man but he could not keep himself away from the desire for something greater. But giving away those barren cows, he could not do justice to the sacrifice though his desire is still predominant. So Nachiketa in a way prompts him to give to give away his own son .( contd)

This week we are covering 39th Chapter of Sundarakanda . We are continuing the format of separate pages for Chapter 39 - Slokas in Telugu and and Chapter 39- slokas in Sanskrit with English Translation.

We return to Kathopanishad under Athato Brahma Jignyasa. This is titled 'Kathopanishad in Simple words' . Essentially we looked at all important Sanskrit lines in Kathopanishad , and collated them . While threading through these sanskrit lines the full story of Kathopanishad comes through. This comes in four parts. The first part covers Valli 1 and Valli 2 of chapter 1. We called this "Kathopanishad in Simple words". For an interested beginner this should make it easy . No this is not "Kathopanishad for Dummies" !! . The Athato page also carries links to interesting notes on Kathopanishad !!

One more thing carries the thoughts about Gurus and the lessons , which is a continuation of Uddhava Gita's Avadhuta story of 24 Gurus !

The extracts of an old book( 1899) by an Oxford Scholar on the History of Sanskrit Literature , appeared earlier.

Athato completes the Kathopanishad 2nd Adhyaya Part 3 or valli 6 We had started the Kathopanishad because it is exciting. It is a dialog on death. Also it is Yama himself teaching !! . So far we have covered Nachiketa's boon in Valli 1, Yama's teaching on good and pleasant as well as the word “om” in Valli 2, Knowledge of Atman in Valli2 (Sloka 21-25) and Valli 3 (Sloka 1-9). Valli 4 went through again nature of Self leading to perception and attainment of Unity. Valli 5 covered more of the nature of inner soul. Then we also added some more notes " good vs pleasant " , "Blind leading Blind" from Kathopanishad

What is on the kasarabada.org?

For the new visitors we thought of adding a few lines on navigation , so that they may know what is available on Kasarabada.org !

We now have 89 chapters of Dasama Skandha of Bhagavatam. All these chapters (stories on Krishna) are listed by name and are available on a link on the Bhagavatam page.

We have also added some downloads specifically for the Sankshipta Sundarakanda ( with Sanskrit slokas) reproduced in different language scripts namely Sanskrit , Telugu , Kannada and Malayalam . There is also a Telugu Sundarakanda Katha for those interested in reading the same as a prose story !!,.

One More Thing

......About Gurus and the lessons !!

There could always be valid questions and doubts on the Avadhuta story of twenty four Gurus .

Is one Guru not enough ?

All the more so since Krishna Himself said that one can uplift himself and for a person his own self can be his guide !.

First is a clarification. When Avadhuta referred to twenty four Gurus, all the Gurus are only allegorical. If you learnt any thing from any body that person is equivalent to a Guru whether declared or not !! Avadhuta drew a lesson from each of the twenty four elements which he observed . Hence the twenty four elements became twenty four Gurus.

In the avadhuta story, Avadhuta is relating what he observed in nature and the corresponding lessons he drew from the same. He is not relating the complex scriptures or Upanishads etc.,. He is relating only the every day events and the lessons he has drawn from that . So in a way it is continuation of Krishna's statement that one can lift himself up by his own efforts. Avadhuta's happiness came about by his own effort in the form of lessons drawn by him from the nature.

So all though twenty four Gurus are listed, the real Guru is Avadhuta himself

Also a word about the lessons.

There are two types of lessons .

One type is the good part which provides lessons that one needs to follow. This is easily understood with the examples of earth etc As an example the habit of Bee in extracting the essence is to be followed by an intelligent man in extracting the essence of scriptures or for that matter essence of anything else.

The other type is the bad part which also provides lessons about what one should not follow. The habit of the "bee" to store is one that is not to be followed.

A guru may give a lesson in one type or the other type and in a case like the "Bee" both types of lessons are there to be drawn !!

The twenty four gurus is an excellent story of how nature itself provides us examples that one may follow or learn from.
