The Fourth valli starts with Yama elaborating on the

the two impediments in our ability to understand the real nature of Self or Atman. There after Yama tells about the nature of self and asserts “ this is that “ . By that Yama is telling Nachiketa that this is the answer for what you wanted to know . “ this is that “ is one of those aphoristic style of statements in Sanskrit which includes the question and the answer“

Valli 4 starts now:

"Some wise man being desirous of immortality with eyes averted inwards sees Atman within".

All the senses were created with facility to look at the outside world and so we are able to touch / see the whole world around us. But we are not able to look inside. No direction from within is sufficient to make the eyes turn inside. The ability to look inside comes with lot of struggle. Yama says some wise man with eyes directed inwards sees Atman within which is to say by controlling the senses the wise man is able to look within himself. In common sense parlance one is able to see an issue dispassionately only when he is able to disengage himself from both sides of the arguments. So is the case with Atman.

Kasarabada.org welcomes all !

This week Sundarakanda moves to Chapter 56 .

Chapter 56 is about Hanuman having accomplished what he set out for (Chapter 1 ) then gets ready to fly back to the northern shore of the sea from Lanka. So the journey we started 56 weeks ago around July 2 2012 is also approaching the end. The completion of Sundarakanda will be in the 68th week which will be 12 weeks from now !!

Last few weeks meant lots of action starting with the Hanuman's battle cry ( Jayatyati balo Ramo !!..Chapter 42) Killing of Kinkaras ( Chapter 43), killing of Jambumaali ( Chapter 44), killing of seven minister's sons ( Chapter 45), killing of the five Generals ( Chapter 46) , killing of Ravana's son Aksha ( Chapter 47) , battle of Hanuman and Indrajit ( Chapter 48), Hanuman's advice to Ravana ( chapter 51) , Vibhishana's advice to Ravana ( Chapter 52) , Sita's prayers ( Chapter 53), burning down of city of Lanka( Chapter 54), Hanuman's sorrow and the good tidings ( Chapter 55) .

As always we are intrigued by the lessons for this generation from the classics of the old. That is what we have from Hanuman under one more thing this week . This is about anger management and walking away !! Every body will have their take. This is ours !!

The three chapters of Sundarakanda that are visited more often are Chapter 1 , Chapter 15 and Chapter 42 The Chapter 1 describes Hanuman's leap across the ocean and the chapter 15 describes Hanuman's first glimpse of Sita. These two chapters in fact have associated legends. Considering the traffic generated on these pages these pages have been updated. You can visit the Chapter 15 on Sita darsanam with Sanskrit slokas and Slokas in Telugu . Now It has more slokas. Chapter 42 has Hanuman roar and Jaya Mantram

The regular features as usual continue !!

The Kathopanishad in Simple words continues with Part3, as continuation of earlier Part 1 and Part 2 - this goes as part of our Athato Brahma Jignyasa. This week Part 3 completes the Kathopanishad Second Adhyaya with Valli4. The Valli 1 and 2 were part of Part 1 . Part 2 covers the Valli 3 which threads through a few concepts of duality Jivaatma and Paramatma, Brahman the Un-manifested and the manifested , and the two goals namely one of reaching heaven and the other attaining Moksha. . The Athato page also carries links to interesting notes on Kathopanishad !! . Now we have quite a bit of material on Kathopanishad; and it is not completed yet !!

One more thing automatically carries an updated article " Jayamantram- The victory Slogan "!!

With this Ugadi we started a page in Telugu titled - "Subbalakshmigari Kalam loninchi" . There is also a technology change. We are adding language support so that Indian language text van easily be accepted . Readers may see a bit of not so well formatted texts on the Telugu pages. Hopefully this will be resolved.

The extracts of an old book( 1899) by an Oxford Scholar on the History of Sanskrit Literature , appeared earlier under "one more thing" !!

For the new visitors we thought of adding a few lines on navigation , so that they may know what is available on Kasarabada.org !

We have 89 chapters of Dasama Skandha of Bhagavatam. All these chapters (stories on Krishna) are listed by name and are available on a link on the Bhagavatam page.

We have 56 chapters of Sundarakanda and also complete bouquet of articles on Ramayana. These articles include "Role models from Ramayana" namely Srirama , Sita , Hanuman , Jataayu , Sabari , Bharata , Lakshmana. Apart from these there were some special articles namely The Message of Ramayana , Going to the Forests and about Hanuman in "In the thick of the Battle " . Along the same lines are the earlier articles in praise of Hunuman 1 , Hanuman 2 and Valmiki Sundarakanda . Added to this bouquet is the Sundarakanda as a Telugu poem by Pandit Vijayraghavrao. We have also added some downloads specifically for the Sankshipta Sundarakanda ( with Sanskrit slokas) reproduced in different language scripts namely Sanskrit , Telugu , Kannada and Malayalam . There is also a Telugu Sundarakanda Katha for those interested in reading the same as a prose story !!,.

One More Thing

Hanuman's Thoughts !!

As we continue our journey through Sundarakanda , we have seen Valmiki conveying a number of “ his thoughts through Hanuman !!. In the last issue we covered the Jayamantram and its relevance

In the chapter 55 we hear some more from Valmiki. This time it is about “anger”. This is what is stated:

“ What is it an angry man will not do? He can even kill his guru. He may be insolent enough to insult people who should not be insulted, he will stop at nothing etc. Only he is a man who overcomes his anger.”

Hanuman blaming himself for the possibility that Sita might have perished in the fire engulfing the city of Lanka moves into his familiar mode of thinking and analyzing !! . Then he talks about the anger.

As told by Hanuman ‘there is nothing an angry man cannot do! – He can kill a “guru” also “. He can be insulting behaving insolently to a good person ! Then concludes that only he is a man who is able to overcome his anger ( or others anger too!)

That is where our lessons start.

When you come across a man already lost in anger there are two people .

One who already lost the battle and is blaring away and the other is the man facing the barrage!! .

For the moment we will not worry about the angry man who already lost his battle! We think of the other one facing that anger!!

An intelligent man who is able to know this ‘problem of anger' is better off leaving the angry man to his fate!

Unintelligent man who tries to join the discussion hands an undeserved victory to the man who is already lost in the world of anger. The message seems to be that do not respond to that anger !.

Does it mean that such people get away by wounding “pride” of others without any damage to them selves? The answers are clear. Actually there are two questions in this . One is about the “bad” angry man who is seemingly getting away and the other is about the good person whose “ pride “has been wounded without

compensation !!

First is about the “bad - angry ” man !!

Such ( the bad- angry man type) people may feel vindicated at that moment because he was not told to shut up !!. But their retribution comes through their own realization that what they did is wrong and corresponding guilt and correction. If that (regret) does not happen their retribution comes through eventual annihilation of their world!! Because they will drive the good people away from themselves !!

What about the second – the “ wounded pride ” of the good man ?!?

It may sound difficult but if “ pride ” is part of the kit of that good man, it only means that he is yet to travel the distance of being a good man. The good man we are talking is about is a ‘ Sthitapragnya' who is not affected by anything including others anger etc. And he has no ego problems ( “ wounded pride ” etc)!!

So in reality the “ wounded pride” is not a matter of consideration. Still the question may remain as to ‘what should he do' – simply walk away?

The answer “ walk away' does not sound is very satisfactory. If it is between equals walk away is the best with retribution or regret happening for a closure. If it is between a boss and subordinate you should still walk away, even here retribution or regret happening for a closure .

This is also partly answered in Gita !

In a different context – in Bhagavad Gita - with Krishna while elaborating on “ Karma yoga” we hear a different yet same tune ! Krishna says do your duty, but if you see somebody not doing their duty do not correct them. Krishna literally says do not wake him up!!

Krishna elaborates and says you do your duty so that you set an example. The man wallowing in a different world not performing his duty will eventually understand and follow your example.

This inaction about correction would be troubling and is to be read in that context only – not when you are in a teaching mode or any such or similar context !!
