Having saluted Vasudeva , the best of Yogis,the guru who is the giver of knowledge - the Tatvabhodha is explained here for the seekers of Moksha !!

In these pages of Athato Brahmajinyasa we started on a journey with a screaming tittle !

!! अथातो ब्रह्मजिज्ञासा !!

!!ಅಥಾತೋ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಜಿಜ್ಞಾಸಾ !!

It is first line of Brahma Sutras. Actually It is the first line of a notes I had with me. That line sent me in search of the original line. And one look at the original line in Brahma Sutras , it is clear that it is an ocean and it is the beginning of an intense elaboration. The three words of the sentence above were followed by three thousand words of elaboration!!!

Even if we did not know the depths of philosophy , the simple Sanskrit translation is “ Now the great desire to know !” It is also “ Now the desire to know ” about the “ Brahma “. Brahma sutras are like a series of aphorisms or a brief statements of principle or truth . Actually it is a series of a terse statements of truth inviting discussion or commentary !

The notes referred above are simpler. You can develop a sense of detachment if you realize that ups and downs are part of life and you move on . Detachment does not mean you ignore your surroundings or your family or your obligations ! . It does not require you to move to forest so to say!

Detachment is also letting go of the attitude of ‘ this is mine ‘ or ‘ this is not' . The attitude of “this is mine” this is not and accordingly associating ones likes and dislikes , ‘I care ‘ or ‘I do not care' is the root cause of all conflict . The passion about things that are mine are to be tempered with a reality that it could be some body else's too . So handle those that are ours without passion but with determination of doing it right . As for those we see as ‘not ours' , if they are to be handled ,we handle them also with a passion as though it is our own and ultimately handling them the way we are supposed to handle our own , that too without passion.

To be without passion yet doing it with passion is what it is all about.

The first line of Brahmasutras was the inspiration for this enquiry .

Brahmasutras are part of the Prasthanatrayi , the three Basic texts of Vedanata which a student of Vedanta studies forma Guru. These three are Upanishads, Bhavadgita and Brahma Sutras . These deal with Brahman , Atman , Dharma, Jagat , Isvara, karma and Jnaana . One may straight away jump in to these texts , but there are many "Prakarana granthas" introductory texts which introduces several concepts which makes it easier to navigate the waves of thoughts that come up in the three basic texts !

Tatvabhodha is one such text .

There are some more texts like Atma bhodha , Sadachara which are also written by Adi Sankaracharya . We decided on Tatva bhodha sa the basic text whose elaboration we take up through these pages.

The sanskrit texts have a standard starting point where in a prayer is invoked for the success of the venture.

Happy Diwali !!

This is Diwali week . So Greetings for a Happy Diwali to all our readers !

Knowing our readers profiles we must also wish Happy Halloween to all in US !! By the time this reaches you the Halloween night would have passed !

Festival means new beginings !! Having completed Sundarakanda , we wanted to start off on a new venture. This time it is in Athato Brahma jignyasa ! We are starting an 18 week Tatvabodha reading ! This will be like a primer for all vedantic studies and discourses. We hope you will like it !

Diwali means house cleaning. In that process we put together two more new pages ! These are " Role models in Ramayana and the Telugu Sundarakanda of Shri Vijayaraghavrao . We already have Valmiki Sundarakanda also on page . This is apart from Kathopanishad which is also consolidated on one page ! All these individual pages make the reading through the earlier parts easy !

Earlier writing about Saundaryalahari , we referred to a book on Saundaryalahari published by Theosophical Publishing House, Adayar , Madras ( 1937) authored by Pandit Subramanya Sastri and Srinivasa iyyengar. This book has an interesting Appendix listing for each mantra the method of Japa ( number of times the mantra is to recited ), the chakra associated, the expected benefit , and the number of days for the Japa etc !

To guard against one being carried away by the tantra lore and apply the same for crude materialistic purposes, there is one illuminating line which is as follows. ' The very essence of of Sri-Vidya consists in its being availed by its votaries to serve lofty and altruistic purposes' !!!

The last week's one more thing !! was a sequel to the earlier story - 'Vakbhushanam bhushanam'. It is about cultured speech!

Recently there was a query on the archives of kasarabada.org ! The structure is simple. For the new visitors we thought of adding a few lines on navigation , so that they may know what is available on Kasarabada.org !

We have 89 chapters of Dasama Skandha of Bhagavatam. All these chapters (stories on Krishna) are listed by name and are available on a link on the Bhagavatam page.

We have complete 68 chapters of Sundarakanda and also complete bouquet of articles on Ramayana. These articles include "Role models from Ramayana" namely Srirama , Sita , Hanuman , Jataayu , Sabari , Bharata , Lakshmana. Apart from these there were some special articles namely The Message of Ramayana , Going to the Forests and about Hanuman in "In the thick of the Battle " . Along the same lines are the earlier articles in praise of Hunuman 1 , Hanuman 2 and Valmiki Sundarakanda . Added to this bouquet is the Sundarakanda as a Telugu poem by Pandit Vijayraghavrao. Sundarakanda !!

A Chapter wise

summary of

Sundarakanda

A Summary: Sundarakanda starts with a positive exuberance of Hanuman's leap across the ocean ( Chapter 1) moving away from prevailing gloom. After landing in Lanka Hanuman plans to enter the city of Lanka (Chapter 2). Then tackling Lankini, the demon guarding Lanka ( Chapter 3) Hanuman moves through Lanka ( Chapters 4 , 5 and 6). He sees gorgeous Ravana's palace ( Chapter 7) Pushpaka Vimana( Chapter 8) the City of Lanka ( Chapter 9) and Ravana in his palace ( Chapter 10). He is delighted mistaking Mandodari for Sita , quickly realizes his error (Chapter 11). Loses his heart on not being able to locate Sita ( Chapter 12 ) but with renewed vigor continues the search. Then he sees Ashok van ( Chapter 13) , enters the same ( Chapter 14) and finds Sita ( Chapter 15) . The seeds of Hanuman's respect for Sita are sown in Chapter 16 and 17.

Then Hanuman sees Ravana entering the Ashokvan ( Chapter 18). Ravana enters ( Chapter 19) Ashokvan to plead (Chapter 20) with Sita ( Chapter 21), who rejects his arguments summarily. Ravana then threatens Sita and leaves ( Chapter 22). Then we hear the Rakshasa women try to threaten and cajole Sita ( Chapter 23, 24, 25, 26). Then we hear Trijata telling about her dream ( Chapter 27). Sita too is pleased about Trijata dream but still despondent about her situation ( Chapter 28). Hanuman quickly mulls over the events ( Chapter 29) decides on the course of action ( Chapter 30) then sings a song in praise of SriRama ( Chapter 31 ). Sita is surprised ( Chapter 32). Hanuman then enquires from Sita. Sita tells her story ( Chapter 33). But quickly Sita has doubts about Hanuman ( Chapter 34) and Hanuman clears them by describing Rama's characteristics ( Ramuni- gunaalu -Chapter 35) .

Then Hanuman hands over Rama's 'Anguliyakam' ( Chapter 36). Hanuman offers to carry Sita back ( Chapter 37) which Sita refuses. Sita says it is more appropriate for Rama to come kill Ravana and take her back ! Then Sita tells the story of Kakasura ( Chapter 38) and asks Hanuman to impress on Rama to come quickly as only two months are left. As Hanuman prepares to go back ( Chapter 39) Sita has gives her message( Chapter 40) . Then Hanuman plans on next steps ( Chapter 41). He decides to take on Ravana's warriors and he lets go with his victory roar !! ( Jaya mantram - Chapter 42). Then we see Hanuman battle Kimkaras ( Chapter 43), Jambumali (Chapter 44) , the minister's sons ( Chapter 45), the five generals ( Chapter 46), Aksha kumara( Chapter 47)and finally Indrajit ( Chapter 48). Captured by Indrajit, Hanuman is taken to the assembly ( Chapter 49) where he is questioned ( Chapter 50)

Hanuman tells that he is messenger of SriRama ( Chapter 51) and advises Ravana to return Sita. Ravan orders Hanuman be killed (Chapter 52). But dissuaded by Vibhishana, Ravana orders that Hanuman's tail be set on fire ( Chapter 53). Sita prays for Hanuman's safety. Fire does not affect Hanuman( Chapter 54 ). But Hanuman sets city of Lanka on fire . After burning down Lanka Hanuman is worried that Sita too might have perished ( Chapter 55) . Realizing that she is safe he takes her leave ( Chapter 56) .

Hanuman then flies back to Mahendra mountain ( Chapter 57) from the southern shores. He tells the full story of his exploits ( Chapter 58) to the waiting Vanaras. Then he suggests that the further course of action be decided ( Chapter 59). Jambavan suggests that they go and inform SriRama ( Chapter 60 ). The Vanaras on return journey stop at Madhuvan ( Chapter 61). Unable to protect the Madhuvan from intruding Vanaras ,Dadhimuka the guard goes to complain to Sugriva ( Chapter 62). Sugriva tells Dadhimuka to send Vanaras back to see him immediately.( Chapter 63). Hanuman and others move on to meet SriRama and inform SriRama about the safety of Sita ( Chapter 64). Hanuman gives a detailed account ( Chapter 65). Rama asks Hanuman to tell everything about Sita (Chapter 66) . Hanuman narrates his conversations (Chapter 67). He tells Srirama that with his assurances of returning with SriRama, he provided confidence and peace to the troubled mind of Sita ( Chapter 68) !

Then Hanuman hands over Rama's 'Anguliyakam' ( Chapter 36). Hanuman offers to carry Sita back ( Chapter 37) which Sita refuses. Sita says it is more appropriate for Rama to come kill Ravana and take her back ! Then Sita tells the story of Kakasura ( Chapter 38) and asks Hanuman to impress on Rama to come quickly as only two months are left. As Hanuman prepares to go back ( Chapter 39) Sita has gives her message( Chapter 40) . Then Hanuman plans on next steps ( Chapter 41). He decides to take on Ravana's warriors and he lets go with his victory roar !! ( Jaya mantram - Chapter 42). Then we see Hanuman battle Kimkaras ( Chapter 43), Jambumali (Chapter 44) , the minister's sons ( Chapter 45), the five generals ( Chapter 46), Aksha kumara( Chapter 47)and finally Indrajit ( Chapter 48). Captured by Indrajit, Hanuman is taken to the assembly ( Chapter 49) where he is questioned ( Chapter 50) Hanuman tells that he is messenger of SriRama ( Chapter 51) and advises Ravana to return Sita. Ravan orders Hanuman be killed (Chapter 52). But dissuaded by Vibhishana, Ravana orders that Hanuman's tail be set on fire ( Chapter 53). Sita prays for Hanuman's safety. Fire does not affect Hanuman( Chapter 54 ). But Hanuman sets city of Lanka on fire . After burning down Lanka Hanuman is worried that Sita too might have perished ( Chapter 55) . Realizing that she is safe he takes her leave ( Chapter 56) . Hanuman then flies back to Mahendra mountain ( Chapter 57) from the southern shores. He tells the full story of his exploits ( Chapter 58) to the waiting Vanaras. Then he suggests that the further course of action be decided ( Chapter 59). Jambavan suggests that they go and inform SriRama ( Chapter 60 ). The Vanaras on return journey stop at Madhuvan ( Chapter 61). Unable to protect the Madhuvan from intruding Vanaras ,Dadhimuka the guard goes to complain to Sugriva ( Chapter 62). Sugriva tells Dadhimuka to send Vanaras back to see him immediately.( Chapter 63). Hanuman and others move on to meet SriRama and inform SriRama about the safety of Sita ( Chapter 64). Hanuman gives a detailed account ( Chapter 65). Rama asks Hanuman to tell everything about Sita (Chapter 66) . Hanuman narrates his conversations (Chapter 67).
